Changing how people connect with downtown The METRO Main Street Red Line began operating in 2004. This guide will help you understand where the new downtown rail lines can take you, how to ride the rail and how to coexist with light rail when you’re not riding it. The new downtown rail lines add six new stations running east and west along Capitol and Rusk, along with the new Main Street transfer station. Today, the Red Line carries 40,000 passengers a day between the Fannin South and Northline/HCC stations. Only Boston’s light-rail system serves more people per mile (US). GARAGES Look for special signage in all downtown parking garages with exits onto Capitol or Rusk. Trains are quiet and weigh nearly 50 tons. STAY ALERT. Representing communities through Arts in Transit To celebrate the cultural and artistic diversity of the vibrant communities along the rail lines, METRO created Arts in Transit. This project enlists the talents of 22 local artists, community residents and art experts who are transforming individual stations from bland, generic necessities into engaging artistic showcases. The stations will offer a proud and meaningful reflection of downtown and the diverse neighborhoods the lines serve. After a rigorous selection process that included METRO staff, art specialists and members of the community, the following artists and projects were selected to enhance stations along the downtown lines. DAN HAVEL EaDo/Stadium Station DOWNTOWN STATION ARTISTS JOHN RUNNELS Convention District Station SHARON ENGELSTEIN AND AARON PARAZETTE Central Station Rusk, Central Station Capitol, Theater District Station Boarding platforms on Rusk and Capitol are different than others you might be familiar with. They’re elevated, but they’re curbside instead of in the middle of the street. Curb and pedestrian ramps and comprehensive signage at every stop make the platforms fully accessible to seniors and people with disabilities. You can bring your bike on the train. See ridemetro.org for rules and regulations. You can transfer between rail lines at two stations. CENTRAL STATION: You can transfer between the North (Red) Line, the East End (Green) Line and the Southeast (Purple) Line. IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LIGHT RAIL EADO/STADIUM STATION: You can transfer between the East End (Green) Line and the Southeast (Purple) Line. You can still make left and right turns like you do now. Just remember that there may be a train sharing the lane with you. Light rail helps ease traffic congestion. It also reduces greenhouse emissions, improving our air quality.
