YOUR
WORLD
AWAITS
4/
It takes years and many
personal moments to
know a place; its nooks
and crannies, its people,
how it all works. Our
travel designers have
first-hand knowledge of
our destinations which
has been built over many
years. We have created
special group itineraries
that will ensure a unique
and inspiring journey,
all in comfort and style.

WHO YOU’LL TRAVEL WITH
6/
WORLD JOURNEYS HOSTS
YOUR FELLOW TRAVELLERS
TRAVELLING SOLO?
Our passionate, experienced hosts
add to the “personality” of our small
group journeys. We select them
because they are real ‘people people’,
often with a particular passion for the
history, cuisine, arts and culture of the
destination. The host will make sure
everything runs smoothly, working
with local guides who delight in sharing
their in-depth knowledge with visitors.
Your host will also take care of tipping
on the group’s behalf to ensure a hassle
free journey.
One of the best things about travel
is meeting and sharing incredible
experiences with other like-minded
people. To ensure a more personal
experience we limit group numbers to
no more than 24 people. We’ve seen
lasting friendships develop on tour,
with new friends choosing to travel
together again in subsequent years.
We hold a number of events during the
year and, as a World Journeys client,
you will receive invitations to these
evenings, which are a great opportunity
to meet other travellers.
We welcome solo travellers on our
journeys, as indeed one of the highlights
is the company of your fellow travellers.
You are able to book your own private
room or cabin however if you would
like to share with another traveller of
the same gender and pay the share
twin price, we do offer a Travelling
Solo program. This is available on
some journeys and on select categories
of accommodation – just look for the
symbol
. You must book and pay
your deposit at least six months before
the tour departure to qualify.

HOW WE TRAVEL
WORLD JOURNEYS SPECIAL
EXPERIENCES
For every itinerary, we have included
some special experiences that we’ve
personally designed to immerse you
in the local culture whether it be
dining with a local family, an exclusive
sightseeing tour or a cooking class.
They are all designed to create lasting
memories.
FREE TIME TO EXPLORE
Our itineraries are full of ‘bucket list’
sights and activities but we have ensured
there is still some time at leisure for you
to explore on your own, simply relax
in your hotel or dine in restaurants of
your choice.
HOW WE GET AROUND
PLENTY OF INCLUSIONS
Our journeys will often take you to
exotic locations, or somewhat off the
beaten track. We have carefully selected
vehicles suited to each environment,
allowing the highest standard of
comfort, whether on luxury ocean
liners or charming river cruisers, in
air-conditioned coaches, or even the
occasional helicopter or seaplane.
We include all accommodation with
private facilities (except on some rail
journeys and in very remote areas where
only shared facilities are available). We
include most meals, which are often at
our favourite restaurants. Sightseeing
with local English speaking guides is
included while touring, as are entrance
fees. However, cruise shore excursions
and occasional optional activities are
not included, as we feel it is a personal
decision as to what, and how much,
you wish to do.
FIRST CLASS
ACCOMMODATION WITH
LOCAL FLAVOUR
Where possible, we use smaller
boutique hotels with a minimum of 4
stars in the best locations. Our cruises
usually offer three choices of cabin –
Inside (no window), Outside (window
or porthole), and Balcony (doors
opening on to a private balcony).

DAY 1 ARRIVE ACCRA, GHANA
DAY 10 PRÍNCIPE
Arrive in the morning for an orientation tour of the city
with your tour host and other group members. Meet in your
hotel lounge this evening for a welcome drink.
Today we visit a beautiful island in the Atlantic, where you
will instantly enjoy the laid-back tempo. The island has
miles of perfect palm-fringed beaches, emerald rainforest,
verdant mountains and mellow fishing villages.
DAY 2 ACCRA > NKAWKAW
Further sightseeing in Accra then drive inland to Nkawkaw
via the Bunso Arboretum, home to more than 100 bird
species and a rich diversity of herbs and trees. At Abompe,
stop to experience village life and bauxite bead making.
DAY 3 NKAWKAW > KUMASI
We continue to Kumasi - the historical and spiritual capital
of the old Ashanti Kingdom. The Ashanti people were one
of the most powerful nations in Africa until the end of
the 19th century, when the British annexed the Ashanti
country to their Gold Coast colony. Visit the Ashanti
Cultural Centre with its rich collection of Ashanti artefacts
in a wonderful reproduction of an Ashanti house.
DAY 4 KUMASI
This morning we explore Kumasi and its vibrant markets.
In the afternoon attend (if available) a traditional Ashanti
funeral attended by mourners wearing beautiful red and
black togas. In Ashanti culture this is a “festive” celebration
where the deceased are considered to be still present in
the family. The chief arrives surrounded by his court in
the shade of large umbrellas as drums give rhythm to the
dancers whose intricate moves are highly symbolic.
DAY 5 KUMASI > CAPE COAST
Visit the small town of Elmina along the way to Cape Coast
- a fishing port where hundreds of large, colourful pirogues
leave each day to fish in the Atlantic Ocean. Its historic
buildings are inhabited by locals and are next to the temples
of the “Asafo”, where warriors still leave their offerings on
imposing colourful statues.
DAY 6 CAPE COAST > ACCRA
After breakfast visit Kakum National Park, with the world’s
highest canopy walk up in the trees. Walking between 120
to 150 feet above the ground, you will enjoy an incredible
view of the rain forest. At this height, the trees offer a
breathtaking view of life in their canopies. Continue to
Accra where we board our luxury cruise ship, the Silver
Cloud.
DAY 7 LOMÉ
We spend today in the capital of Togo. Shore excursions
are available to explore the city with its colonial history,
colourful traders and voodoo market.
DAY 8 COTONOU

some of the most varied in the region. The distinctive
burgundy and white striped Cotonou Cathedral is also
worth a visit.
DAY 9 AT SEA
DAY 11 SÃO TOMÉ
See another island with remote golden beaches and volcanic
mountains in the rainforest. Their culture is a mixture of
African and Portuguese influences and the locals are known
for their ussua and socope rhythms.
DAY 12 AT SEA
DAY 13 LUANDA
Visit the capital and largest city in Angola, founded by the
Portuguese in 1575, the city has had a tumultuous history,
finally achieving peace in 2002 after a long civil war. Now
with a swelling population and surge of development, the
city is experiencing a rebirth and has one of the fastest
growing economies in the world.
DAY 14 & 15 AT SEA
DAY 16 WALVIS BAY
Visit Walvis Bay, a town home to a wide lagoon with
innumerable sea birds, pelicans and one of the largest flocks
of flamingos in Southern Africa.
DAY 17 LÜDERITZ
This small town is wedged between the Namib Desert
dunes and the wild Atlantic seaboard. It’s noted for its fine
collection of graceful buildings from the German colonial
era. Set against a background of black rock and the sparkling
blue waters of the bay, this architectural heritage gives the
town its special charm. Just six miles east of Lüderitz lies
Kolmanskop. This one-time boom town was abandoned
over 30 years ago. An attempt at restoring some of this
ghost town allows visitors a glimpse of life in a diamond
mining community. With the desert dunes fast encroaching
on many of the buildings, there is an eerie feeling about
the place.
DAY 18 AT SEA
DAY 19 CAPE TOWN
We disembark in Cape Town, a vibrant city full of natural
beauty with a Dutch and English blend. We check in to the

history of human spirit which prevailed adversity. This

CASTRO’S
CUBA
Trapped in a time warp as a result of the Cuban
revolution in 1959 and subsequent economic
embargo, there is nowhere else like Cuba. On this
journey we visit the great historic cities of Havana
and Santiago de Cuba, where 1950s Chevys cruise
past in a range of vivid colours; a contrast to the
pastel hued architecture of smaller colonial gems such
as Trinidad and Camaguey. The stunning natural
beauty and fascinating history is only outshone by
the Cuban people, incredibly warm and friendly,
opening up their homes and their hearts to visitors.
Che Guevara and Fidel Castro are still venerated,
but times are changing. The embargo has been lifted,
it’s time to visit before the old Cuba is gone forever!
SPECIAL EXPERIENCES
Cooking class and salsa lesson
Dive in to Cuban culture – take part in a hands-on cooking
class followed by a fun dance class to learn the quintessential
Cuban dance, the salsa.
Dine at some of our favourite paladares
Tucked away in side streets, we’ll visit some of our favourite
paladares, traditional family run restaurants. They serve
excellent seafood and delicious traditional Cuban/Spanish
dishes.
Visit the world-famous Tropicana Nightclub
Music pervades the island of Cuba and will sweep you along
in the rhythm. We will take you to the Tropicana Nightclub,
famous for fantastic music and where beautiful dancers sway
to the salsa and rhumba tunes.

DAY 1 ARRIVE HAVANA
On arrival you will be transferred to the Iberostar Parque
Central Hotel, situated in the heart of the old city – Havana
Vieja. Meet your tour group and host for a welcome dinner.
DAY 2 HAVANA
Today we explore colourful Havana. Wander through pastel
coloured boulevards, narrow cobbled streets and flaking
Spanish colonial buildings, where faded colours bring charm
rather than define age. Highlights include the Cathedral,
Museum of the Revolution and beautifully restored parts of
the city. Enjoy a delicious lunch in a paladar before being
whisked away in a classic (pre 1959) American car, we’ll
drive along the 8km Malecón, a broad esplanade beside the
Caribbean. End up at the iconic Nacional Hotel to sip a
cocktail and stroll through the gardens, which display two
guns from the old Santa Clara Battery.
DAY 3 HAVANA AND VINALES
Today we visit the beautiful Pinar del Rio province, a
UNESCO heritage listed site where we will see traditional
plantations of tobacco, taro and bananas. We’ll visit a
tobacco farm to learn about the entire production process
and we’ll tour an organic farming operation. Then visit the
charming town of Vinales and enjoy lunch before returning
to Havana late afternoon.
DAY 4 HAVANA > BAY OF PIGS > CIENFUEGOS
Today, we drive to Cienfuegos, via the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de
Cochinos), scene of the botched 1961 American invasion.
In Cienfuegos, enjoy the seaside vibe with a walking tour
through spruced-up colonial streets, past the Palacio de
Valle, an architectural jewel with influences of Gothic,
Romanesque, Baroque and Mudejar architecture – like
something out of Arabian Nights. This evening is at leisure
with your host on hand to offer suggestions.
DAY 5 CIENFUEGOS > SANTA
CLARA > TRINIDAD
We drive to Santa Clara, where history was made over 50
years ago. It was here, that Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara and a
band of soldiers derailed a train carrying 350 heavily armed
government troops. Using a borrowed bulldozer and some
homemade Molotov cocktails, this action sealed the fate of
the Batista dictatorship. We’ll see the statue of Che guarding
an excellent museum and mausoleum beneath it. On to
UNESCO listed Trinidad, a perfectly preserved Spanish
colonial settlement. Enjoy a walking tour along the cobbled
streets of the town and in the evening visit the famous Casa
de la Musica, popular with the locals for its live salsa band
and delicious mojitos sipped under the warm Carribean
night sky.
DAY 6 TRINIDAD
Today we learn how to make Cuban specialties in a cooking
class, followed by a salsa lesson. Afterwards we visit an old
36 /
sugar plantation in the picturesque Valle de los Ingenios
abut 10km outside of Trinidad. The day ends with a
barbeque dinner at the beach, accompanied by live music.
DAY 7 TRINIDAD > REMEDIOS >
CAYO SANTA MARIA
Today we stop at Remedios for a tour of this lesser-glimpsed
colonial jewel. Then we head for Cayo Santa Maria,
considered one of the finest beach resorts in Cuba. Relax
and enjoy your beautiful beachside hotel and the warm
Caribbean waters.
DAY 8 & 9 CAYO SANTA MARIA
Two days to soak up the sun and enjoy the facilities of this
superb resort on a beautiful beach.
DAY 10 CAYO SANTA MARIA > CAMAGUEY
A relaxing start to the day before continuing west,
experiencing scenes of rural Cuba as we head to the
charming town of Camaguey.
DAY 11 CAMAGUEY > SANTIAGO DE CUBA
This morning enjoy a bicycle taxi tour through the
labyrinthian centre of Camaguey, a UNESCO historic
site. The town was built that way to confuse pirates. Also
famous for the gorgeous architecture and Cuban-baroque
churches, Camaguey is a delight. After touring the town,
we’ll head to the epicentre of Afro-Cuban culture, the city
of Santiago de Cuba.
DAY 12 SANTIAGO DE CUBA
Today is spent exploring this fascinating city with your
guide. Diego Velázquez de Cuéllar made Santiago his
second capital, Fidel Castro used it to launch his embryonic
nationalist Revolution, Don Facundo Bacardí based his
first-ever rum factory here, and just about every Cuban
music genre first emanated from somewhere in these dusty,
rhythmic and sensuous streets. Included is a visit to Castillo
de San Pedro de la Roca, the UNESCO listed fortress
built to defend Santiago from an attack by pirates. Those
interested may enjoy an optional guided evening excursion
to visit some of the city’s famous music venues.
DAY 13 SANTIAGO DE CUBA > HAVANA
A morning at leisure before a flight to Havana and transfer
back to the heart of the old city.
DAY 14 HAVANA
Tour the colourful art district of Havana, Callejon de
Hammel. The afternoon is yours to explore before a special
farewell dinner, followed by a visit to the world famous
open air cabaret show at the Tropicana nightclub where
little has changed since pre-Revolutionary times. You will be
delighted by the colourful costumes and Latin salsa dancing.
DAY 15 DEPART HAVANA

We have a farewell breakfast before departing for Siem Reap

DAY 1 ARRIVE TASHKENT
DAY 10 DASHAGUZ > DARVAZA
On Arrival, transfer to our hotel. Meet your tour host and
other group members in your hotel bar or lounge this evening.
We drive across the Karakum desert to see the Darvaza Crater,
more commonly known as ‘The Door to Hell’. As you stand
near the edge of this fiery crater, you will be in awe of its
magnificent colour and incredible strength visible from miles
away. We stay the night in a traditional yurt. You’ll enjoy
the traditional Turkmen hospitality and kindness and taste
traditional Turkmen cuisine under the desert sky.
DAY 2 TASHKENT
Full day sightseeing of old and new Tashkent, a fascinating
ancient city. See an interesting mix of modern new office
buildings, hotels and parks alongside crumbling Soviet style
apartment blocks. We visit Barak Khan Madrasah where the
world’s oldest Uthman Quran (8th century manuscript) is
kept. Visit the Museum of Fine and Applied Arts, Bunyodkor
Square and the bustling Chorus Bazaar.
DAY 3 TASHKENT > SAMARKAND
We drive to Samarkand, a majestic city and a UNESCO World
Heritage site. Unique monuments of ancient architecture,
heritage of scientific and arts schools and artisan’s workshops
are well-known around the world. We’ll see the spectacular
Registan with its three magnificent madrasahs (educational
institutions) and Gur Emir Mausoleum with its bright blue
domes.
DAY 4 SAMARKAND
Visit the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, one of the most impressive
historic mosques in Central Asia and a significant architectural
expression of Timur’s rule. Immerse yourself in the many
colours, scents and sounds of the Siab bazaar. Its abundant
produce and handicrafts on offer are a testament to the local
people’s talents and diligence. We visit the ancient settlement
of Afrosiab and the remains of the Ulugbek Observatory, one
of the great archaeological finds of the 20th century.
DAY 5 SAMARKAND > BUKHARA
We drive to Bukhara, where you have time at leisure. The most
complete example of a medieval city in Central Asia. Most
of the centre is an architectural preserve, full of madrasahs,
minarets, a massive royal fortress and the remnants of a oncevast market complex.
DAY 6 BUKHARA
Explore this living museum city with 140 monuments dotted
about the city. After a day of walking, take an optional visit to
the Bozori Kord hammam for an oriental massage, which has
been rejuvenating Silk Road travellers since the 14th century.
DAY 7 BUKHARA > KHIVA
Visit the Summer Palace, then we drive between the Karakum
(black sands) and the Kyzyl-Kum (red sands) deserts to Khiva,
stopping on the way to see the Amu Darya River.
DAY 8 KHIVA
Visit the dark side of the historic trade route, home to the
largest slave market in Central Asia. We’ll explore Ichon-Qala,
within the ancient city walls to find an abundance of historic
monuments but virtually no residents.
DAY 9 KHIVA > DASHAGUZ
We cross the border into Turkmenistan and visit KonyaUrgench, which contains the ruins of the capital of Khwarezm,
a part of the Achaemenid Empire. The town’s inhabitants
deserted it leaving impressive monuments to its prosperous
Silk Road past. We stay overnight in Dashaguz.
60 /
DAY 11 DARVAZA > ASHGABAT
We return to the ‘Door to Hell’ for a different perspective
during the day. Then drive to Ashgabat visiting a nomadic
tribe on the way.
DAY 12 ASHGABAT
Explore the capital, ‘the city of love’ with lavish marble palaces,
gleaming gold domes and vast expanses of manicured parkland.
Sightseeing includes the Parthian settlement of Nisa, the
Ertugrul Gazi Mosque and National Museum.
DAY 13 ASHGABAT > MASHHAD
We drive to the border where we complete formalities to enter
Iran and drive on to Mashhad.
DAY 14 MASHHAD > SHIRAZ
Today we will explore Iran’s holiest city, known for its beautiful,
massive and ever-growing Haram (shrine complex). Tonight
we fly to Shiraz, the city of poets, home to splendid gardens
and exquisite mosques.
DAY 15 SHIRAZ
Wander through a 19th century garden, Eram Narenjestan
followed by a visit to the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque. From the
outside, a fairly traditional house of worship – but inside it’s
like stepping into a kaleidoscope. The multitude of stained
glass windows turn the inside of the mosque into a riotous
wonderland of colour. An afternoon visit to Vakil Mosque
and Vakil Bazaar where we wander through the vaulted brick
avenues with courtyards where handicrafts, Persian rugs and
carpets, scarves, spices and antiques are all on offer. Tonight
we will have a special dinner with a local family.
DAY 16 SHIRAZ > YAZD
After breakfast we visit the Quran Gate then drive to the
remarkable Persian ruins of Persepolis a UNESCO World
Heritage site dating back to the 5th century BC. Persepolis
was once the richest city on earth - at the heart of the city
stood the royal palace - a wonder of gold and silver, ivory, and
precious stones. Today, the spectacular ruins are still marked
by Alexander’s fire, three feet of ash covered the floor when it
was first excavated - and many of the columns are still visibly
scarred by flames. We drive to Yazd and stay for a night.
DAY 17 YAZD > ISFAHAN
In Yazd, we navigate the winding lanes of this mud-brick old
town. We will see the Dowlat Abad garden, the Towers of
Silence and Zoroastrians Fire Temple before driving to Isfahan.
DAY 18 ISFAHAN
Isfahan is a gem of a city with many beautiful boulevards and
covered bridges. Today we visit the Imam Square, Ali Qapu
and Chehel Sotun Palace (Palace of 40 pillars) and the bazaar.
PERSIA AND THE SILK ROAD
DAY 19 ISFAHAN > TEHRAN
We drive to Tehran visiting the Fin Garden in Kashan on
the way. Tehran, Iran’s most secular city, with its relatively
short history, more than makes up for it with its impressive
museums. In this city you will see bold fashion statements, a
range of ethnic and international restaurants, chic cafes and
plenty of art galleries.
glass and ceramic museum and Golestan Palace. Then a visit
to the Morvarid Palace (Pearl Palace) , designed by the Frank
Lloyd Wright Foundation and the residence of Princess Shams
Pahlavi which has been frozen in time at 1979. We will visit a
local school as well as your guide’s favourite café. This evening,
we’ll enjoy a farewell dinner.
DAY 21 TEHRAN > DUBAI
Our sightseeing will include the Archaeological Museum, the
We enjoy breakfast before departing for Tehran Airport to fly
to Dubai where our journey ends.
THE DOOR TO HELL
IRANIAN CUISINE
In the middle of the hot, dry Karakum Desert in
Turkmenistan, along the ancient Silk Road, we will visit
the ‘Door to Hell’. Soviet geologists were drilling in 1971 and
tapped into a cavern filled with natural gas. They decided
to burn off the gas, expecting it to burn for just a few days.
This hole has now been continually burning for 42 years.
The flames generate a striking golden glow which can be
seen for miles around Darvaza, a village with a population
of about 350.
Iranian food is some of the most delicious and fresh in
the region. With influences from its neighbours including
Central Asia and the Middle East, Iran has a stunning
variety of cuisine from the familiar kebab to the more
unusual chicken stew with pomegranate juice. You’ll be
impressed by the vast spectrum of foods: caviar, pickle,
and smoked fish in the north; samosas, falafel and hot and
sour shrimp in the south; noodles, flatbread and rosewaterscented ice cream across the country.

GIVING
BACK
As you’ve seen in this brochure,
we visit some of the most pristine
locations in the world; some are
home to a local population less
fortunate than ourselves, or to fragile
environments and ecosystems.
All too often, their plight goes unseen, whether it’s the
devastation in marine environments caused by ghost
nets in the Indian Ocean, leopards and cheetahs being
poisoned in Botswana, rhinos massacred for their
horns, or Cape Town’s hungry street children. World
Journeys is proud to support a number of charitable
organisations and we donate to support their quest to
minimise humankind’s impact on the environment,
and bring relief to those in need. Join us in aiding
these noble organisations to keep our world beautiful
and prosperous so that future generations can enjoy
inspiring journeys of their own.
66 /
WE SUPPORT THESE ORGANISATIONS:
Streetsmart works with selected
restaurants to donate to local
charities that feed Cape Town’s
street children.
Sea turtle rescue centres that
rehabilitate turtles caught in ghost
nets in the Indian Ocean.
Travellers help struggling schools
in the areas they visit by packing
2.27kg of school supplies into their
luggage. These include pencils,
soccer balls, stethoscopes and
blood pressure kits.
This rehabilition centre for
poisoned or injured (by traps)
leopards and cheetahs also educates
local game farmers on how to avoid
these cats eating their stock.
This programme relocates white
and black rhinos from the high
density parks in South Africa, to
parks in Botswana. These parks
are more difficult for poachers to
access.
