Mounted on the outside wall of the
Visitor Center, is a 4-foot casting of
Hermann the German’s footprint!
It is unclear where it came from, but
cast right into the base of this artifact
are the very words,
“DEUTSCHE HABEN
MEHR SPASS”
or “Germans Have More Fun!”
As the legend also indicates, by rubbing
Hermann’s footprint, you, too, will
“have more fun.”
Stop by the Visitor Center to discover
this new attraction in New Ulm and give
the staff your version of how you think
the footprint came into being. After all,
who doesn’t want to “have more fun?!

GLOCKENSPIEL | Schonlau Park Minnesota Street and 4th North Street
New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants in 1854,
both looking to create a “utopian German community on the American
wilderness.” The community still holds on to its German heritage today!
Located downtown, the 45-foot-tall Glockenspiel’s bells can be heard
chiming throughout the day and playing programmed pieces at noon, 3
PM and 5 PM. The Glockenspiel houses 37 bells with a total weight of
more than two tons. Twelve figurines depicting characters from the
city’s history rotate on a circulating stage during performances. From
Thanksgiving to early January, the figurines of a three-piece polka band
that stand directly below one of the clock faces are replaced with a
nativity scene. It is one of the few free-standing carillons of its size in the
world. Hours: Noon, 3 & 5 PM daily; plus 10:30 AM, 1 PM during festivals.
When German settlers founded New Ulm, they used a stately oak tree
that still stands at 3rd South and German Streets as the reference point
for the town plat. One hundred and fifty years later, the town’s residents
celebrated New Ulm’s anniversary with a different type of tree.
Reminiscent of those that decorate German towns, the Heritage Tree
depicts different stages of the town’s history, from a riverboat to the railroad, the New Ulm Battery and a beer wagon. A plaque explains the significance of each item. 101 South Minnesota Street

HERMANN
MONUMENT
Tim Cordes
This 102-foot monument towering over New Ulm depicts
Hermann the Cherusci, the ancient hero whose army liberated Germany from Roman rule in 9 A.D. As German
immigrants came to the United States, the legend of
Hermann as the father of German independence and a
symbol of honor and pride came with them. In 1840, a
national “Order of the Sons of Hermann” was founded in
New York. In 1887, the Order commissioned a statue of
Hermann similar to the one in Germany - to be erected in
New Ulm. It took nearly a decade to complete the more
than 4,000-pound statue, designated by the U.S.
Congress in 2000 as a national symbol of German heritage.
Visitors may climb a staircase to the base of the statue for
a stunning, panoramic view of New Ulm and the
Minnesota River valley. The monument sits on the
grounds of Hermann Heights Park, which has playground
equipment and picnic facilities.

AUGUST SCHELL
BREWING CO.
In 1860, German immigrant August Schell broke ground for the
August Schell Brewing Company and paved the way for a 156-yearold family tradition. With five generations of Schell descendants to
operate the brewery, the August Schell Brewing Company claims
the title as the second-oldest, family-owned brewery in the nation
and holds the title as the oldest brewery in Minnesota. 156 years
later, Schell's still specializes in brewing German-style lagers, the
backbone on which it was founded a century and a-half ago.
In addition to the 19+ craft beers that Schell's produces, since 2002
they have adopted Grain Belt, Grain Belt Premium Light and
Nordeast into the family. They have brewed the Grain Belt label at
Schell's Brewery for the past 14 years. This acquisition allowed
Schell's to do its part in preserving another legendary Minnesota
beer. Schell's recently expanded its operation with a sour beer facility – the Starkeller Brewery. Its Noble Star Series will be aged there
in 1936 cypress wood tanks.
Visit this majestic little brewery tucked away in the rolling hillside of
the Cottonwood River, and witness the beauty of the grounds while
experiencing the legacy and heritage of the past 156 years. Stroll the
beautiful gardens, get a glimpse of Schell's unique history in the
Museum of Brewing, and browse the 2,000-square-foot Gift Shop.
Enjoy a brewery tour and sample some of America's finest beers.
Schell's Visitor Center also features a Rathskeller Tap Room, its
architecture reminiscent of old-world, German-style Rathskellers.
When you come to visit, make sure to use the parking lot located
just below the Visitor Center.

A BRIEF HISTORY
OF NEW ULM
“BATTLEFIELD OF NEW ULM” |
by Michael Eischen.
Photo Courtesy of the Brown County Historical Society
New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants beginning in 1854, both looking to create a “utopian German community on the American wilderness.” Using the advice of a French fur trader, they sited their town
on the natural terraces that occurred near the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers in south-central Minnesota. It is named after Ulm, a city on the Danube River in south-central Germany, and home to the tallest
church steeple in the world and the birthplace of Albert Einstein.
The biggest historical event in New Ulm’s history
happened shortly after its founding with the U.S.Dakota War of 1862, when New Ulm was attacked
twice that August. Barely surviving the fighting by the
disgruntled and ill-treated Dakota Indians, the town
was nearly destroyed and was even briefly abandoned
after the attacks. Soon after the settlers returned and
went about their business of town-building, New Ulm
survived locust infestations in the early 1870s and a
damaging tornado in 1881. The pioneers endured difficult times, indeed!
Brewing, grain milling, brick-making and cigar-making were initial businesses that thrived and with the
arrival of the railroads in 1872, New Ulm was connected
to the rest of the country in an efficient and productive
manner. The arrival of many German-Bohemians in the
1870s also contributed to civic and economic growth.
The erection of the Hermann Monument in 1897,
honoring an ancient Germanic hero, boldly proclaimed
New Ulm’s strong German heritage - although that
would come under attack twenty years later. The year
1917 was a tough year on America and New Ulm, in particular. The Turners, still a leading social force in New
Ulm, led a rally protesting America’s involvement in
World War I. Shortly afterward, the Governor removed
our Mayor, City Attorney and County Treasurer from
office for misconstrued “treasonous” speeches.
Subduing the strong German culture in New Ulm
became necessary for the next few years.
Leading New Ulm back to prominence was the
national popularity of old-time music that came from
New Ulm artists such as, Whoopee John Wilfahrt, Fezz
Fritsche and Harold Loeffelmacher. The rediscovery
and pride in New Ulm’s German heritage that came
from this period led to a promotion of New Ulm as a
tourist attraction, evidenced most noticeably by Polka
Days that began in 1953, and carried on by successor
festivals Heritagefest and Bavarian Blast.
Today, New Ulm thrives in the Minnesota River valley with diverse businesses led by Kraft Heinz
Company, 3M, large trucking industries, A.M.P.I.’s butter and dairy output, along with the N.U. Medical
Center and numerous machining businesses.
New Ulm’s setting in the valley contrasts with the
otherwise flat prairie of the region. This beauty, combined with a diverse economic structure, and a strong
“sense of place” and history, makes New Ulm a star in
Minnesota’s list of “must see” places. We invite you to
visit us and discover why we are so widely acclaimed!

WANDA GAG
HOUSE
GOVERNOR LIND HOUSE
This stately 1887 Queen Anne-style home along
Center Street was once the home of Governor
John Lind, the 14th Governor of Minnesota and the
first Swedish-born American to serve in the U.S.
Congress. In addition to his political service to
Minnesota, he was the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico
and has been honored by the King of Sweden with
medals and decrees that are proudly displayed in
the home, along with large paintings of Mr. and
Mrs. Lind, beautiful woodwork extending to the
elaborate staircase, Victorian square grand piano
and other elegant furnishings. It has been restored
to its original beauty, including the expansive front
porch and distinctive tower. As proof of its lovely
restoration, the house is on the National Register
of Historic Buildings. The home is open for tours
and special events and can be rented for receptions and other functions.

Mark Boettger
The childhood home of Wanda Gag, author of the still-popular children’s book “Millions of Cats,” was designed by her
father, Anton, in 1894. The Gag family came from the country
of Bohemia and were known for an unconventional lifestyle.
Anton incorporated several artistic touches in his home, such
as faux-woodwork and hand-stenciled wall borders, and had
his artist studio upstairs under his skylight. Wanda went on to
national fame with her books and artworks, and many of
them are now housed in various prestigious museums. The
Queen Anne-style home has been restored and now houses
lithographs, paintings and drawings by Wanda Gag, paintings
by Anton Gag and Flavia Gag, another of the talented children. Also, books by Wanda and Flavia are displayed. The gift
shop offers books by Wanda, about Wanda and the Gag family, T-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.

NEW ULM BATTERY
Tim Cordes
Following the U.S-Dakota War of 1862, the Minnesota Civilian Militia Act authorized the formation of an artillery unit
by the city of New Ulm to protect against future Dakota attacks. Those attacks never came, but the Battery continued to be maintained by the city up to the present day. Today the New Ulm Battery stands as a symbol for the
city of New Ulm and is used extensively for ceremonies, dedications, parades, and educational purposes. Events
for 2016 include the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Memorial Day Parade with horses, Bavarian Blast, HermannFest and
Parade of Lights.

you‘ll find all of the above
Turner Hall was founded by
the New Ulm Turners in 1856 and is
home to the oldest bar and oldest gym in the state
of Minnesota. The Turners believed in the concept of
a sound mind and sound body and were dedicated
to physical fitness, education and gymnastics. These
beliefs continue today, as our upstairs is still used for
gymnastics instruction for children of all ages.
Our Ratskeller dining room offers history and
atmosphere in a way you won’t find elsewhere in
New Ulm. Enjoy over 70 feet of beautiful handpainted murals of Switerland, Italy and Germany
while you visit. Whether it‘s the time of year to dine
downstairs by the fire or upstairs on the deck in
town, Turner offers a diverse menu with fabulous
specials daily.

HARKIN STORE
In the late 1870s, riverboat travelers along the
Minnesota River would stop in a small hamlet
known as West Newton, home to a hotel, sawmill,
blacksmiths, livery and general store. Today, all that
remains of West Newton is the Harkin Store, the
general store that seems to have been frozen in
time along County Rd. 21 just outside New Ulm.
Stored on the shelves are fabrics, storage vessels,
chinaware, cooking utensils and medicines. As
much as 40% of the inventory is original! The store
operated from 1870 until 1901, when its post office
function was usurped by Rural Free Delivery to the
area farmers. Costumed guides host programs on
Sunday afternoons, and you can still sit on the front
porch and look out at the rolling river. It is owned by
the Minnesota Historical Society, an indication of its
historical value and importance.

Monuments
For the history buff, there is no shortage of monuments in New Ulm. The largest, of course, would be
Hermann the German (see p. 7). Here are a few more that are worth your time to seek out.
In 1856 the first GermanBohemians arrived in New Ulm.
Many of them settled near the river
along the southern boundaries of
the town, in an area that came to
be called “Goosetown” - for their
practice of keeping flocks of
geese. In 1984, an organization
developed to study their ancestors, with an effort to create a
monument to honor those same
people. The German-Bohemian
immigrant monument was erected
in 1991 to honor immigrants from
the area known at the time as
Bohemia (now the western Czech
Republic). This 7 1/2 -foot-tall
granite monument features a statue of a father, mother and child.
On the back, the parents legs are
raised to represent their love of
music and dancing, valued traditions brought from “the old country.” On stone pavers at the base of
the monument are the names of
350 German-Bohemian families
who settled in New Ulm.
Celebrating the 25th Anniversary
of the monument in May 2016!
Erected by the State of
Minnesota
in
1891,
the
Defenders Monument honors
those who defended New Ulm
during the Dakota War. The artwork at the base was created
by New Ulm artist, Anton Gag.
Originally sited at the intersection of State and Center
Streets, the monument was
moved to its present location in
1917 for safety reasons due to
the rising use of automobiles.
Walk up to the monument
(accessible from State or
Washington Streets) to see the
bas-reliefs on the base and read
the inscriptions. Tap on the
monument, and you’ll discover
that the stone-looking structure is actually made of metal!

HISTORIC PRESERVATION
New Ulm was designated a
"Preserve America City" by the
President’s Advisory Council on
Historic Preservation in 2006.
Soon after, we received several
grants to fund work on our historic downtown, including the
creation of our 16 video podcasts, a Walking Tour guide, and
new historic markers.

The Brown County Veterans
Memorial was dedicated on
Veteran's Day, 1999. This memorial was designed by C.J.
Schmidtke and received recognition in a national trade magazine for its unique features. The
project was initiated and developed by the Brown County
Veterans Council. This memorial
was presented to Brown County
as a lasting tribute to past, present and future veterans who
honorably served in the Armed
Services of the United States of
America during periods of
peacetime and designated periods of armed conflict. By the fall
of 2014 all 2192 flat paver spaces
were designated and a memorial expansion began. By the summer of 2015, four of fourteen vertical granite panels will be set in
place. Each panel has space to
hold 144 engravings to memorialize our future service members. The panel project continues to solicit donations which
can be made in person at the
Veterans Office within the
Courthouse or by mail: Veterans
Memorial Project, PO Box 248,
New Ulm, MN 56073. Contact
the Veterans Office for information on purchasing memorial
engravings at 507-233-6636.

“PUTTING A FACE ON BROWN COUNTY HISTORY FOR
FUTURE GENERATIONS TO SEE AND ENJOY”
Built in 1910 as the New Ulm Post Office, this brick, German-Renaissance
style building is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the
city’s most architecturally distinct structures. The Brown County History
Museum’s exhibits include an expansive historical display of Brown County’s
Century Farms on the first floor. The second floor contains exhibits that rotate
often. Most notably in 2016 will be “Collections Curiosities” that will run through
May, followed by a traveling exhibit called “Fur Trade in Minnesota” that will run
through July and will make way for a 2017 World War I exhibit. The third floor
houses the award-winning exhibit, “Never Shall I Forget” which tells the story of
Brown County and the Dakota War of 1862. The research library features files
on over 5,000 Brown County families and is one of the largest research centers
in the state. The Bookstore carries a wide variety of books on city, county, and
state history. This fascinating site is much more than a beautiful building! Our
annual U.S.-Dakota War Commemoration will be held August 15- August 21,
2016. The Popcorn Wagon will be out in 2016, with extended times during
Oktoberfest. Check our website and Facebook for more dates.

Religious Attractions To Explore
New Ulm’s Way of the Cross was completed in 1904 and renovated in 2004. Its 14 stations, with statues imported from Bavaria, provide a quiet, reflective walk up a gentle
incline to a chapel dedicated to the Mother of Sorrows. Entrusted to the Diocese of
New Ulm, the Way of the Cross is located on the 5th North hill, behind the New Ulm
Medical Center, and includes a nearby memorial to Father Alexander Berghold, an
instrumental priest in the 1800s who, along with Sister Flavia of the Poor Handmaids
of Jesus Christ, initiated the project.
Way of the Cross
1500 5th North, behind the Medical Center | Daily from April to October
Dedicated in April 2010, the Chapel of the Christ was built to commemorate the 150th
anniversary of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod. Its soaring beams, fine
artistry, and musical emphasis make it a wonderful addition to the college’s mission
– preparing workers for carrying the gospel of Christ to the world. The 57 rank Schantz
organ is the perfect instrument for the chapel’s superior acoustics.

Waldheim Circle, on the MLC Campus | 507-354-8221
The present Cathedral is the third church on this location, with the other two lost to
the Dakota War in 1862 and a tornado in 1881. Begun in 1890 and not finished until
1903, it is a fine example of German Baroque architecture. People of all faiths are welcome to visit the glorious interior, originally created by local artists Alexander
Schwendinger, Christ Heller and Anton Gag. The scene in the church’s apse with God
the Father presiding over Heaven and Earth is stunning, as is the intricate main altar.

(2015), Tripping.com (2015), Fox
News (2015), Fodor’s Travel
(2014), and voted Best
Oktoberfest in MN by
WCCO (2014).
Downtown New Ulm
Come to one of the best Oktoberfest celebrations in the nation! This
traditional festival is modeled after one of the world’s largest celebrations,
held each year for several centuries in Munich, Germany. New Ulm’s version takes place during the first two full weekends in October, with festivities happening all over town! The main locations for Oktoberfest in
2016 are Historic Downtown, Best Western Plus, and Schell’s Brewery.
Join us in historic downtown New Ulm for an Oktoberfest celebration
in the streets both Saturdays of Oktoberfest! The Germanic-American Day
Parade kicks off the downtown festival at 11am on Saturday, October 8.
Organized by the New Ulm German-Bohemian Society, anyone who is
proud of their Germanic heritage is invited to march in the parade! The
end of the parade route flows right into the Downtown Oktoberfest celebration, with music (German music first, followed by a more contemporary band), German (and American) food, local beer (Schell’s) and wine
(Morgan Creek Vineyards), and much more! Games, horse-drawn trolley
rides, a stein-holding contest and more take place both Saturdays of
Oktoberfest. Break out your dirndls and lederhosen and come join us!
Festivities at the Best Western Plus include a full schedule of “oompah!” with performances by New Ulm’s famous Concord Singers among
other bands. The celebration kicks off with the official keg opening on
Friday evening, a tradition that is still practiced today in Germany’s
Oktoberfests. The food and music continue late into the night on both
Fridays and both Saturdays of Oktoberfest.

Oktoberfest celebration, held on Saturday, October 15th this year, is no
exception! Schell’s is a German Craft Beer company that was begun by
German settlers here in New Ulm in 1860, so they know what they are
doing when it comes to German festivals! Music, beer, and lederhosen

Many of America’s wonderful Christmas traditions began in Germany. Christmas trees, Advent wreaths, nutcrackers, and many other traditions can be discovered in many of our attractions, homes and shops. Natural decorations have been a city tradition in New Ulm since 1925. The festive Downtown business district is completely
draped with natural evergreen boughs and lights. Real Christmas trees adorned with red bows line the sidewalk.

Veigel’s Kaiserhoff is “The German restaurant” in
town and, in addition to their German menu items (which has many American favorites, too!), they have many
scenes of Germany and New Ulm painted on the walls. The Guten Tag Haus has many items imported from
Germany, including lots of Christmas ornaments and décor, cuckoo clocks, steins and candy. Domeier’s German
Store is a crowd-pleaser that has been in business since the 1930s and is chock full of imported goods from
Germany, including food stuffs and music. The Heritage Tree Installed for our 150th Anniversary of the founding
of town in 2004, this is very much like the “Mai baums” seen in many German cities. See it at the south end of our
downtown. Bavarian Blast is the inheritor to a German-music themed summer festival since 1953. They have
innovated as time has moved on, but all of the elements you would expect of a German-style festival are here!
Hermann Monument is a 102’ tall monument to a German hero who united the German tribes in 9 A.D. and is a
hero to the German nation. The views of the Minnesota River valley from the top are stunning! Painted in 1873 the
Turner Hall Murals were painted in the ratskeller (basement) of this old building and contain scenes of Germany,
Switzerland and Italy and are incredible! To know they were covered up for 81 years after World War I and
restored makes the story even more remarkable. Enjoy a Schells’ beer in “the most Germanic room in America!”
Glockenspiel is a 45-foot tall bell tower with mechanical figures that come out at 12/3/5pm every day. It is located at the north end of downtown and has served as a landmark since it was built in 1980. We have our version
of Oktoberfest, the universal festival the first two weekends in October with venues at the Best Western Plus,
Downtown, and Schell’s Brewery. Come “get your German on!”
Girl’s Day Out
Celebrate a special birthday or other event
with your girlfriends in New Ulm with
“uniquely female” shops, restaurants and
opportunities. From spa services to decorating workshops – let us help you make memories and give you stories to tell! Here are
some of our events that may interest you!
Shopping Opener is a long-lived event is
comprised of several different components
that include a Women’s Expo, local crafter
sales under the title of “Gnome-made
Shows,” art shows, decorating workshops,
and more. Shopping Opener is scheduled for
two weekends in early November. T h r e e
quilt shops help you take advantage of this
growing hobby. They offer supplies, classes, work space, the use of specialized tools, and host a few quilting
events during the year. To celebrate our unique shops and historic shopping district, a Boutique Week is being
organized for April 14-16, 2016. Fashion show, food and other activities! Watch www.newulm.com for more information. The Parade of Lights is an annual event that has gone on for 27 years (as of 2015) and features over 60
lighted units that go through downtown the Friday after Thanksgiving. Use it to cap off a day of holiday shopping! Bring your girlfriends and “take over” one of our two charming bed and breakfasts! Both overlook the
Minnesota River valley and are convenient to downtown’s shopping, dining and nightlife options. Other accommodation options are available. Call us at the Visitor Center (888-463-9856) for planning assistance and referrals.

Pub Crawl New Ulm Style
Beer has long been a part of German culture. In fact, today Germany is globally ranked
third in terms of per-capita beer consumption.
So take a tour around New Ulm and taste the
culture! We care about your safety, so please
drink responsibly! Start the morning with
Bloody Marys at the fabulous B&L Bar! Ask for a
chaser: the B&L has more Schell’s beer on tap
that anywhere else in the world! Next enjoy the
scenic drive out to Morgan Creek Vineyards to
sample wines from Minnesota’s only underground winery! Order a wine flight and choose
your samples from their many delicious varieties! Wine not your thing? They serve Schell’s beer too. Stop for lunch
and a pint at Turner Hall, the oldest bar in Minnesota! Head to the historic Ratskeller Bar and check out the murals
on the walls which date back to the 1870s! You can sit right next to them as you enjoy some delicious German or
American food, and a drink from this historic bar. After lunch, head to one of the most popular tourist attractions
in New Ulm: Schell’s Brewery! The tour here is not to be missed! The grounds are beautiful year-round, with a
deer park and peacocks who wander the gardens. Schell’s has been brewing German craft beer since 1860 and
the tasting after the tour is well worth the $3 price of admission! After the brewery, you may decide to take a break
(and a nap!) before continuing your adventure. That’s ok! When you’re refreshed, get ready for a fun evening at
the Grand Kabaret. Enjoy drinks and something from the wood fire oven in the adjacent restaurant. The exposed
brick walls of this historic building make excellent acoustics for the live music every Friday and Saturday. Not ready
to call it a night? Keep the fun going! There are many watering holes within walking distance of the Grand Kabaret,
and others all over town! Check out page 46 for more nightlife ideas.
Social Media Fans
New Ulm’s German heritage is our biggest
draw, but these events and activities will give
you great photos and posts on Social Media!
From the hip to the frozen, gnomes to bluegrass,
we host great music, tasty food and lots of fun
every year! Grand Kabaret is a restored hotel
from the mid-1800s features free music every
Friday and Saturday. Musical styles are in the
range of folk, blues, light rock, jazz and other. You
can access the attached restaurant, too! In addition to great wine, Morgan Creek Vineyards, has
developed a fun tourism following for their “Wine
Down for the Weekend” events Friday nights and
twice-monthly jazz nights. An outdoor oven
makes great pizzas! The brewery has a great winter festival! Bock Fest is filled with over 5,000 fun-loving young people enjoying music, food and, of course,
Schell’s beer! When it closes at 4:30pm come to the German Mardi Gras fun at the New Ulm Conference Center,
called Fasching. Join the “Parade of Costumes” if you dare! Who can argue with over 150 years of brewing success?
Come out to Schell’s Brewery and enjoy the beautiful gardens, squawk at a roaming peacock, visit the wonderful
gift shop, and tour the “prettiest brewery in America!” With a professional director, State Street Theater is a homegrown group that has ramped-up their offerings with many shows during the year. They specialize in “murder
mysteries,” but tackle many styles of theater. New Ulm’s long-lived motorcycle club, The Flying Dutchmen, hosts
several cycle events at their lovely club house and grounds throughout the summer that are open to the public.
Flat-track races and hill climbs are their specialties, but they host rock bands on occasion, too. It’s great fun for
everyone!

Nestled along two rivers, blanketed with trees
and offering acres and acres of parks, New Ulm is
the perfect place to get outside and get busy!
Soak up the sun along our trails, hit the links
(disc, miniature or traditional), or drop a line in
the river. Just get out there! You’ll thank us
come bratwurst and sauerkraut time.
From New Ulm's earliest beginnings the community has had a vested interest in park space.
The original plat for the City included several key
parks that still exist. Today New Ulm is able to
boast a total of 42 park units. Visit www.ci.newulm.mn.us to see a list of park facilities and the
amenities available at each location. Park shelters can be reserved: 507-359-8344
Park & Recreation Director Tom Schmitz credits this rich system to the original founders saying, "[It's] the result of New Ulm's history of
recreation and outdoor activities. This goes back
to German Land Society and Turner ethic of
'sound mind and sound body.' They saw the
value of recreation, green spaces, and natural
resources."
Open to visitors, the city’s Recreation Center
(122 S Garden St) has an indoor swimming pool
with slides, whirlpool and an aquatic climbing
wall; a three-lane indoor track; indoor courts that
can be used for tennis, basketball or volleyball;
racquetball and walleyball courts; strength and
cardio facilities and group fitness area and
cycling classes. The Civic Center (1212 North
Franklin) houses two arenas, including one with year-round ice. The building also has eight team rooms and
meeting space available for rent. Note: Outdoor ice skating (hockey and open-skate) also available at Harman
Park (101 N Garden St). Warming house and restrooms on site.
In the mid-1800s, the banks of the river near
Riverside Park (101 S Front St) welcomed steamboats carrying soliders, supplies and German settlers. Today it is home to the Riverside History &
Nature Learning Center (see page 15). The kids will
love the “pirate ship” playground, and Gertie The
Goose. Gertie, named for the old New Ulm neighborhood of “Goosetown” where Riverside Park is
located, is one of many characters a local writer
has created in a folk tale
that also includes the
four German gnomes
and other characters
you will see at our
festivals.
32 NEW ULM VISITOR GUIDE | 2016
You must visit German Park (200 North German)
in downtown New Ulm. It is full of monuments,
flowers and the Angel Fountain. It’s great for a
lunch break or a place to stroll amidst the beauty.
Free music concerts: various groups every
Monday night in the summer (June 6 – August 29,
2016, no music July 4), and Municipal Band concerts every Wednesday night in June and July.
The Municipal Band has been in existence for over
65 years. When the 205th Infantry Band was
called up for duty in WWII, a “Pioneer Band,” the
precursor to the Municipal Band was formed.
Bring a blanket or folding chair and enjoy the
music!
While at German Park, the kids can play on the
playground equipment or climb on the Herbie The
Hedgehog statue. This charming 4-foot bronze sculpture was created by local artist Jason Jaspersen. He makes young heads turn
with his whimsical expression; feel free to capture their bemusement with your camera! He is New Ulm’s own city Park Ranger
and his full time job is to keep the parks clean and to inspire others to do the same.
In line with New Ulm’s commitment to
active lifestyles, there is a 13-mile paved Bike
Loop (see pages 30-31) around the city. This
bike loop didn’t happen overnight! The project began with a paved recreational trail
that runs more than five miles along an old
railroad bed, making it the perfect path for
an easy family ride or run. The trail travels
from Broadway and 24th North St to German
and 20th South St. Along the way, take in
the river, a few city parks and even some
farm land. The trail is clearly marked and
largely shaded, with benches along the way
in case you need a rest. In 2015, the 13-mile
bike loop was completed – just follow the
signs with Hermann The German on a bike in
the corner. There are also designated safe
biking paths throughout the city. Visit
www.newulm.com or stop by the Visitor
Center for maps (1 N Minnesota St, 507-2334300). And if you are interested in a different
type of biking, New Ulm has a Skate Park and
BMX Track (315 1st South St). Both parks are
free and open to the public, with BMX Park
use limited May through September. The
skate park may be used by inline skaters or
skateboarders.

FUN
New Ulm is fortunate to have a state park in our city limits,
Flandrau State Park. Flandrau, one of Minnesota’s 10 most
popular state parks, is comprised of 1,000 acres, including
grasslands, marshes, and wooded areas along the Big
Cottonwood River. Located in southwest New Ulm, the
park is just minutes from downtown. Among the amenities
are eight miles of hiking and groomed cross-country trails
(boot and ski rentals available), a chlorinated sand-bottomed pool, beach, sand volleyball court, playground equipment and fire and horseshoe pits. The park has 88 campsites
in three campgrounds, 2 year-round cabins, and a group
center that accommodates 110 people. In addition to its natural beauty, the park also holds a significant place in New
Ulm’s history. In the 1930s and 1940s it was the site of Works
Progress Administration (WPA) projects, and several of the
stone buildings those crews erected still stand. During
World War II, part of the park was used as a prisoner of war
camp. It is named after Charles E. Flandrau, who played a
pivotal role in the Dakota War and served on the Minnesota
Supreme Court.

Bird watchers will love the many opportunities for birding in and around New Ulm! Flandrau has recorded up to 158
different specie sightings. Fifteen miles east is Swan Lake,
which is a wildlife preserve with many varieties of birds for
viewing. Getting on or along the river will also provide you
chances to spot unusual birds, including eagles. Visitors to
New Ulm are encouraged to join in the Christmas fun by
participating in the Annual Christmas Bird Count held in the
middle of Deccember. Results are given to the Audubon
Society (www.Audubon.org) for recording. To sign up or for

NU Country Club
The New Ulm Country Club is a picturesque 18-hole, par 71, semi-private course
surrounded by Flandrau State Park and perched atop the bluffs of the
Cottonwood River. A distinctive feature of the course is the many mature oak
trees that border the fairways. The Country Club was established in 1929 as a ninehole course and expanded to 18 holes in 1966. The front nine saw a remodeling
effort in 2001 with the addition of hazards, tee boxes and sand-traps to add an
overall depth to the course.
The newly remodeled clubhouse is complete with bar and restaurant service in
the Cottonwood Grill. The grill offers a casual dining for both golfers and non
golfers. The banquet facility hosts all size and type of functions with a seating
capacity of 380. There are also several private meeting spaces for smaller groups.
The banquet facility and the Cottonwood Grill are open year around. Our golf
course is open in the summer months and green fees are available for visitors to
New Ulm. The NU Invite is June 10-12. B&L Classic July 24-25 and the Schell’s Bottle

“The Kegel Klub” (“kegel” is the German word for “bowling”) is the bar operation with the bowling center; they feature a large bar area with pool tables,
darts and other games along with an 18’ x 6’ oil mural of the German village
and countryside. Dating back to the 1930’s, it was rescued from a building set
to be demolished and lovingly restored. Legend has it the eyes follow you!

geography, the impact of pollution, and the importance of water as a part of the eco-system and our everyday lives.
Putting Green offers a Minnesota River Trail for your walking pleasure, a shaded picnic
area, native plant gardens, a solar-powered refreshment stand, and a geodesic dome. The
geodesic dome is our indoor classroom as well as a great place to host a meeting, birthday party or any other kind of get together where you are looking for something a bit different. We also offer educational field trips for groups of all types, ages and interests.
Putting Green is also home to New Ulm’s community garden.
Visit our website www.puttinggreen.org for information on days and hours of operation
as well as details of our offerings.

State Street Theater Company
The State Street Theater Company operates a
750 seat auditorium, a 150 seat black box, and a
90 seat Off Broadway studio space. New Ulm
and The State Street Theater Co. have a long and
fascinating theatrical history. Theatre and musical performances date back to the founding of
New Ulm. Shows occurred at Turner Hall in the
late 1850s. The Pioneer Players were incorporated in 1978 after many years of formal and informal theatre productions. Since then, SSTC has
grown into a performing arts organization that
presents numerous events a year including
workshops for directors, children, and adults.
Actors, directors, producers and many volunteers make up the workforce to present musicals, comedies, dramas, children’s programs,
murder mysteries, parades, historical plays and
other events. The highlight of 2015 was the summer production of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG when the car really did fly! Call the SSTC office for a free brochure or visit www.statestreetnewulm.org.

Dining Scene
If it’s authentic German cuisine you're after, New
Ulm might seem a little bit like paradise. Sure,
we've got some of Minnesota's best bratwurst and
sauerkraut, sauerbraten and spaetzle, and a brewery full of German beer to wash it down; but New
Ulm's dining scene doesn't start and end there.
You'll also find Mexican, Chinese, and everything in
between, in family-style eateries, fast food and
casual settings, as well as more upscale dining and
a nearby winery.

SCHOOLS
Martin Luther College (MLC),
at 1995 Luther
Court, overlooks New Ulm directly across from
Hermann Heights. Its landmark structure, Old Main, was
built in 1884. We invite you to come and visit our campus and enjoy the many activities connected with collegiate life. Take in one of the many annual dramatic productions. If you love music, we offer numerous vocal
and instrumental concerts throughout the year that
highlight the work of four choirs, as well as our Wind
Symphony, and handbell choir. We run a Division 3
NCAA athletic program, so there are always sporting
events to attend. Whether it be at our scenic football
bowl, soccer complex, softball field, or gymnasium you
are welcome to join the action. The MLC campus hosts
many community organizations throughout the year.
New Ulm’s Tennis Association, Soccer Association,
Community Concert, Rotary, and American Legion are
several groups who regularly make use of the college’s
courts, buildings, and athletic fields. We at MLC are
proud to be a part of the New Ulm community. We look
forward to welcoming you to our campus.
