p
rotect and improve Narragansett Bay. That’s our mission. And we fulfill that
mission on the shore, on the water, and in the public square through
education, advocacy, restoration and eco-tourism. Our strength lies in the
support we receive from our members, donors, volunteers and countless
community partners. This report highlights some of the 2014 progress and
successes that you made possible.
Thank you for your ongoing support of our mission
and of Narragansett Bay.
director & president’s message
Imagine the future of
Narragansett Bay. Will we build
upon four decades of progress
improving water quality and
restoring the Bay to health?
Or will the pressures of population
growth, coastal development,
government fiscal constraints
and changing climate conditions
undermine this progress?
Each day, more than 200 million
gallons of treated wastewater are
discharged into Narragansett Bay
from sewage treatment plants.
These facilities require ongoing
investment just to maintain
current water quality, much
less improve it. Suburban sprawl
creeps across the landscape of
the Bay’s 1,600-square-mile
watershed, increasing polluted
runoff. Important environmental
protections — enshrined in law —
are meaningless without political
will and financial resources for
enforcement.
As a community, we have choices
in shaping the future of the Bay.
Will we make further improvements in Bay health a priority?
Develop innovative approaches
to finance stormwater and
wastewater investments through
public/private sector cooperation?
Demand that our elected leaders
protect our region’s most iconic
and valuable natural resources?
Save The Bay is dedicated to the
path of progress. In 2014, the
Board of Directors adopted a new
strategic plan embracing the vision
of a healthy Bay, thriving with
wildlife, open and accessible to
all. This plan (page 13) was the
culmination of a year-long process
of listening to you, our members
and stakeholders, and carefully
weighing organizational priorities
and needs. The Board defined five
strategic goals to mark our path
forward.
It is fitting that we aspire to fulfill
these goals by 2020, the 50th
anniversary of Save The Bay’s
founding.
We made significant headway
toward each of these strategic
goals this year. We succeeded in
encouraging Rhode Island voters
to approve $20 million in new
funding for wastewater treatment
plant upgrades. We set new
attendance records at our Newport
Exploration Center and camp
programs. We completed a
two-year study of current salt
marsh health. We held one of
our most successful Swims ever,
thanks to the enthusiastic support
of our dedicated citizen athletes.
We assumed leadership of the
International Coastal Cleanup in
Rhode Island. And we confronted
industrial polluters and irresponsible developers.
Save The Bay’s Executive Director, Jonathan Stone,
and Board President, F. Paul Mooney Jr.
These achievements begin with
you, our members, volunteers,
donors, program participants and
swimmers. From all of us on the
Board and staff, we thank you for
your commitment to the cause
and vision for the future of
Narragansett Bay.
3
a
t the heart of our work to protect and improve Narragansett
Bay is the education of the next generation of Bay stewards.
We’ve been connecting students, teachers and families to
Narragansett Bay, literally, for more than 30 years.
Thanks to the generosity of the Alletta Morris McBean
Charitable Trust, last year marked our first full year with
two working education vessels, which are both now outfitted
with technology that elevates our program content. Between
educational programs and eco-tourism, the M/V Alletta Morris
and M/V Elizabeth Morris operated at (almost) full capacity
throughout the year, providing 1,044 programs to 2,426
members of the public and 15,565 K-12 students.
education
• Following its rebirth in the months after Superstorm Sandy, our Exploration
Center and Aquarium in Newport is still setting records. In 2014, 23,975
people visited the Center during its 229 open days. To the west, our South
Coast Center in Westerly enjoyed about 3,000 visitors in its second year.
• We are proud to have
expanded our educational
programs geographically,
serving the Westerly and
southern Rhode Island
communities through newlyadded camps and nature
cruises made possible with
the addition of our second
vessel, M/V Elizabeth Morris.
• Newport School District’s
entire third grade assisted
our education and habitat
team with dune grass
restoration at Easton’s Beach.
• We have strengthened
the impact of our
educational programming
on individual students
with the expansion
of our Narragansett Bay
Field Studies Program
to more schools. Some
2,644 students worked
with us an average of
14 hours over multiple
visits in 2014.
• In 2014, we served 15,565 K-12 students, 30 school districts and 146 schools and community groups.
5
o
ur advocacy work today includes monitoring water quality,
identifying pollution sources, holding state environmental
agencies accountable for enforcement of federal law, and
promoting policy changes to improve Bay health, increase
public access and adapt to changing climate conditions. We
recorded important progress in each of these arenas in 2014.
• We strengthened our watchdog capacity with the addition of
a full-time, seasoned environmental attorney. Our advocacy
team reviewed and commented on key, precedent-setting
enforcement cases; recommended changes to environmental
policies; and made the case for a level playing field in the
application of environmental protections.
advocacy
• Aquidneck Island remains a major area of focus for Save The Bay, given
the Island’s serious water pollution challenges and vulnerable coastline.
In June, we brought together municipal and nonprofit leaders to focus on
the problem of polluted stormwater, identify solutions and explore areas
for collaboration.
• Our continued call for a
comprehensive, interagency
approach to climate change
adaptation led to passage of
a General Assembly bill
establishing the Executive
Council on Climate Change.
The Council brings together
directors of all Rhode Island
state agencies to coordinate
strategies and plans for
climate change adaptation.
• “Investing in Clean
Water” was the topic
of our Bay Agenda
event, held at the
beginning of the
legislative session.
This event was one
element of a strategic
initiative to build
political support for
critical investments
in wastewater and
stormwater
infrastructure.
• With 71% of voter support, we successfully championed a $53M Clean Water, Open Space & Healthy
Communities Bond referendum, which will provide $20M for additional upgrades to wastewater
treatment plants and fund other important environmental projects.
7
o
ur coastal watersheds, salt marshes, beaches and dunes play vital
roles in the health of the Narragansett Bay ecosystem. Freshwater
wetlands and coastal salt marshes improve water quality and serve
as nurseries for countless numbers of fish, reptiles, crustaceans and
birds. Dunes and beaches provide essential habitat for wildlife
and serve as recreational resources for millions of people. All are
affected by climate change, especially the increased rate of sea
level rise, changing precipitation rates and greater storm intensity.
Our restoration team and volunteers did hands-on work to limit
these impacts and help the Bay adapt to rapidly changing conditions, conducting restoration where feasible.
restoration
• In 2014, we completed our two-year assessment of salt marshes in
Narragansett Bay and coastal ponds, documenting the degradation of salt
marshes from the increased rate of sea level rise caused by climate change.
The effort identified several potential salt marsh adaptation projects in
Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts.
• Staff and volunteers
continued dune grass
planting projects in
Newport, Barrington,
Cranston and Westerly to
help protect fragile beaches
damaged by Superstorm
Sandy in 2012. In three
other communities,
Save The Bay removed
pavement at seven “end of
road” locations on the Bay
to assist these communities
in reducing the impact
of polluted runoff and
adapting to sea level rise.
• In coordination with
the RI Department
of Environmental
Management Mosquito
Abatement Coordinator,
we led restoration
projects at Round
Marsh in Jamestown,
the Potowomut River in
Warwick, and the RISD
(Barrington) Beach salt
marsh, digging small
creeks to allow trapped
water to flow off
the marsh.
• On Aquidneck Island, in order to reduce ongoing erosion and enhance public access to King’s Park
Beach in Newport Harbor, we installed sand-filled coconut fiber envelopes, resembling burritos, along
the eroding bank as an alternative to stones and other hard structure.
9
i
n September, Save The Bay took on leadership of Rhode Island’s
International Coastal Cleanup for the first time. In just a few
weeks, with the support of many corporate sponsors, we organized 2,101 volunteers at 80 cleanup sites covering 59 miles of
Rhode Island shoreline. Corporate sponsors contributed more
than $30,000 to Save The Bay in support of the event.
• 2,101 volunteers collected 16,368 pounds of trash.
• Shoreline covered stretches from Block Island to Providence,
and even inland to the shores of the Pawtuxet River in
Hope, R.I.
• 157, 579 total items were collected and documented.
• 75 items per volunteer, on average, were collected.
• Top 10 items collected were cigarette butts, food wrappers,
plastic bottle caps, plastic beverage bottles, fishing line, straws,
beverage cans, plastic bags, glass bottles and metal bottle caps.
events
• The 38th Annual Citizens Bank Save The Bay Swim raised nearly $357,000
through swimmer fundraising and corporate sponsorship. The 1.7-nautical-mile
Swim drew 424 swimmers and nearly 200 kayakers from 21 states and more
than 1,500 spectators.
• Supported by local businesses,
our Artists for the Bay Show
& Sale featured the original
work of more than 60 artists
and jewelers from Rhode Island,
and raised nearly $20,000 to
support our mission.
• Our Third Annual Golf Outing,
generously sponsored by The
Providence Journal Charitable
Fund and held at the prestigious
Carnegie Abbey in Portsmouth,
R.I., raised $48,000. More than 80
golfers and guests participated in
18 holes of golf, lunch and a
cocktail dinner.
• In its third year,
our signature event,
Taste of the Bay
and Annual Meeting,
featured live music, local
seafood, desserts and
Rhode Island drinks
from more than 25 local
vendors. With more
than 200 community
supporters, members
and Board members in
attendance, the event
raised nearly $15,000 in
support of our mission.
• In total, our 2014 events raised nearly $470,000 to support Save The Bay’s mission and services.
11
s
ave The Bay’s strength lies, in part, in the volunteers who help us
reach all corners of the Bay and its watershed.
In 2014, 3,050 dedicated volunteers contributed 24,870 hours
toward protecting and improving Narragansett Bay. They
removed trash from the shorelines, restored salt marshes,
processed mailings, educated families at the Exploration Center
and South Coast Center, assisted with summer camp, supported
events such as the Save The Bay Swim and much more. Save The
Bay’s internship program alone generated 8,147 hours of service
and enabled 62 college students and recent graduates to earn
credit and enhance their career experiences. The International
Coastal Cleanup was our largest volunteer effort, with 2,101
volunteers participating.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Endowment funds, as directed by the donor, are an investment in the future of Narragansett Bay. Gifts remain in perpetuity to fund our
important work in advocacy, habitat restoration, education and stewardship.
We started our 2014 fiscal year
with anticipation and excitement.
In July 2013, we reopened our
Exploration Center and Aquarium
at Easton’s Beach in Newport,
which had been closed for nine
months in order to restore and
improve the facility after damage
caused by Superstorm Sandy.
Two months later, we officially
christened our new vessel, the
M/V Elizabeth Morris, which
has provided us the opportunity
to expand our learning and
recreational programs in
Narragansett Bay.
Total support and revenue
increased about nine percent,
after eliminating the effect of
government contract funds that
we receive and pass through to
14
other organizations. This increase
came principally from a 40
percent, or $238,000, rise in
aggregate revenue generated
by reopening the Exploration
Center and Aquarium and the
increased educational programs
and tours made possible with the
addition of M/V Elizabeth Morris.
Total expenses increased by
$254,000, or seven percent.
A portion of the increase is
attributed to the fiscal 2014
operation of the Exploration
Center and Aquarium, which was
closed for most of fiscal 2013,
and to the operation of the M/V
Elizabeth Morris, launched into
Narragansett Bay in the first
quarter of fiscal 2014. During
fiscal 2014, we also refinanced
our mortgage at a lower interest
rate, which provides us with
additional resources to devote
to program activities.
As an organization, we continue
to explore opportunities to
generate additional revenue from
existing activities and diversify
the sources from which we
generate revenue, all while
continuing to expend available
resources in a prudent manner
and manage cost increases.
The continued generosity of
donors, members, businesses,
foundations and volunteers
makes it possible for Save The
Bay to fulfill its mission and
position the organization to
make significant contributions
towards the future of
Narragansett Bay. Our dedicated
and committed staff are ready
to take advantage of future
opportunities and handle any
challenges encountered along
the journey.

gifts in honor
of or in
memoriam
The Save The Bay
Endowment Fund was
established in 1989 by
Peter Lisle in memory
of Elizabeth S. Lisle.
As a lasting tribute to
the work of Save The
Bay, all In Memoriam
gifts and bequests,
upon the permission
of the estate executor,
are placed into the
endowment fund. A
small portion of the
interest earned annually is used to support
Save The Bay programs, and the rest
is used to reinvest in
the endowment. In
2014, gifts were
received in loving
memory of:
