From the Editor:
This is the first issue of The Arkansas Family Historian to be perfect
bound. The new format will be slightly taller and wider and allow us
more flexibility in the number of pages that we print and permit us to
print larger issues when we want or need to do so. In the three years that
this quarterly has been produced by committee, it has undergone many
changes, and we hope you will bear with us as we try to implement
additional improvements. The goal of the editorial board is to send you a
quarterly that meets high standards and is attractive, professional appearing, filled with information, easy to read, convenient to carry, and well
indexed.
In the first article of this issue Joan Carruthers presents corrections to
erroneous information previously published in a county history. Her
concern that incorrect information would be copied and passed on
without investigation until it became accepted as truth is one that all
genealogists should have in this age of instant internet proliferation of
undocumented information. More and more articles published in journals
today deal with disproving previously published and long-accepted
misinformation. No one wants to research the wrong ancestors, so let’s
share well-documented information when we can and make the
necessary corrections when possible.
Bill Hanks completed an updated survey of Liberty-Coleman
cemetery in Logan County and annotated it where he could with maiden
names and information to go with unmarked stones. We would be happy
to print any lists you have created or transcribed of voters, cemeteries,
obituaries, Bibles, and other records.
Curiosity led Rebecca Wilson to research the persons who had filed
the Prior Birth Certificates with the earliest birth dates. In the process,
she discovered that the earliest birth date on file did not belong to the
person who filed the certificate, but to his mother, whose own birth date
was written on the certificate by mistake. By using census records,
Rebecca discovered that the man was actually born almost forty years
later than the certificate indicated. When Rebecca researched the next
earliest birth date, Mattie Hudgins proved to be an interesting subject for
an article and an ordinary person whose achievements deserved to be
published.
In the third article, Tommy Carter provides us with an index to the
entire 1891 personal property tax list of Calhoun County, Arkansas, as a
substitute for the destroyed 1890 census. An 1890 census substitute
never was published for Calhoun County, so we are pleased to be able to
bring it to you now. There being no extant 1890 tax list, the 1891 was
used instead. The value of the personal property tax list over the real
estate tax list is that all adult males were required to pay a poll tax, which
The Arkansas Family Historian, Volume 45, Number 1 – March 2007
was listed with the personal property tax assessment even if a person
owned no property to assess.
Four descendancy charts that earned Arkansas Ancestry Certificates
appear in this issue. Besides encouraging research in Arkansas families
and documentation of sources, applying for Ancestry Certificates is a
good way for you to share your ancestry with other AGS members and
with people everywhere who read this journal in libraries. Such sharing
often results in contacts with distant or long-lost cousins and others
researching the same family.
We have room now for more book reviews in each issue and will try
to bring you as many as possible each quarter. If you are publishing a
book, be sure to send us a copy to review. It will help you to publicize
your work.
You are encouraged to send queries when you join AGS or renew
your membership, but you may send them at any time of the year and by
e-mail to the [email protected] address if you wish. So
keep this publication in mind when you are starting research on a new
Arkansas line or have encountered a brick wall in an old one.
We would be pleased to hear your opinions about the articles we print
and what kinds of articles you would like to read. We would also be
pleased to receive your submissions. I hope you will find this issue
worth your time.

CORRECTIONS: THE LOGAN FAMILIES OF LOGAN
COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Joan Methvin Carruthers ©
In 1987 the Logan County Historical Society published a wonderful
memorial to the families of Logan County, Arkansas. That book, Logan
County, Arkansas – Its History and Its People, paid tribute to my greatgreat-great-grandfather, Col. James Logan, for whom the county was
named. 1 Unfortunately, the three articles presented in the book regarding
Logan family descendants contain a number of errors. 2 The book has
been distributed to many families, genealogical societies, and libraries,
and it is used as a reference for Arkansas Logan family lineage.
For more than ten years I have researched my family with the help of
AGS member Bill Hanks of Little Rock, Arkansas, who, at the time
Logan County, Arkansas was printed, made the contributors of the Logan
family articles aware of their lineage errors. Unfortunately, family tradition often trumps documented factual presentation and genealogical
history is altered forever.
The purpose of this article is to refute the errors in Logan County,
Arkansas – Its History and Its People and publish correct information
concerning Logan family lineage. Standards of genealogical scholarship
and historical accuracy, as well as respect for the memory of their
ancestors, demand a truthful presentation of Logan descendants for
posterity. Referral to the Descendants chart at the end of this article on
page 12 may help you follow the lineage.
David and Nancy (Thurmond) Logan migrated from Kentucky to
Missouri by 1820. 3 Their son Col. James Logan, for whom Logan
County was named, was an adult at that time. David and Nancy Logan
moved into Arkansas in the early 1830s, and David died in Crawford

County in 1835, 4 leaving as heirs James Logan, Jonathan Logan, and
Melinda Pettit. 5
In the first Logan family article in Logan County, Arkansas, author
Garry Logan attributed two non-existent children named Benjamin and
Robert to David and Nancy Logan. 6 He first stated incorrectly that
Robert married Lucy and had three children: Lucy, Mary and John
Edward, Garry’s ancestor. In the next paragraph, the author stated
correctly that David and Lucy Logan were the parents of John Edward
Logan. This couple was actually David Latty Logan and his wife Lucy
Johnson. 7 As will be shown in this article, David Latty Logan was the
child of Robert Allison Logan and a grandson of Jonathan and Frances
(Thurmond) Logan, not David and Nancy Logan. Jonathan was the
brother of David Logan and had married the sister of David’s wife. 8
Jonathan settled early in Arkansas Territory before David and his son
Col. James Logan left Missouri. 9
Jonathan’s son Robert Allison Logan married Mary S. Ruebottom in
Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on 7 March 1816. 10 Robert, known as Ellison
Logan, was murdered in 1828 by a man named Skaggs. 11 Mary was left
with five young children, three boys and two girls. 12 When he wrote his
will in 1830, Jonathan Logan bequeathed a third of his estate to “my
grandchildren the children of Robert A. Logan deceased.” 13 The
children’s mother Mary (Ruebottom) Logan also was deceased by
November 1835 when the administration notice of the estate of Robert A.

Logan Family

and Mary Logan was published. 14 The surviving sons David Latty,
Pleasant Dixon, and Robert Allison Logan, were called heirs of Robert
A. Logan when they went to court in 1845 to have Theodore Sadler
removed as their guardian. 15
David Latty Logan, son of Robert Allison and Mary (Ruebottom)
Logan, married Lucy C. Johnson 25 December 1845, and they had three
children: Mary A. in 1847, Lucy L. in 1853, and John E. in 1855. 16
David Latty Logan was married secondly to Minerva F. Johnson and
thirdly to Maryann Waide. 17 He had no children by his second wife and
his one known daughter by his third wife was Emma D. Logan born 30
August 1863. 18 She married James Martin Dorrough and they had a son
Arthur who acquired the family Bible. 19
Garry Logan’s article contains a photo of the two young sons of his
brother Grady standing next to the gravestone monument of David Logan
in the Logan Cemetery. These children are described as eighth
generation descendants of David Logan. 20 However, since the 1830 will
of Jonathan Logan calls his son Robert A. Logan deceased and includes
Robert’s children in the distribution of his estate, Robert Allison Logan
was in fact a nephew of David Logan, the father of Col. James Logan.
Garry Logan’s ancestor John Edward Logan was son of David Latty
Logan, grandson of Robert Allison Logan, and great-grandson of
Jonathan Logan, the brother of David Logan and uncle of Col. James
Logan.
The second Logan article in Logan County, Arkansas presents the
ancestry of James O. [Jim] Logan who also descended from Jonathan and
Frances Logan through their son Robert Allison. However, James O.
Logan also claimed in his article that he descended from Col. James
Logan, saying “I remember as a boy visiting many times in the log house

Mr. James O. Logan was not a great-grandson of Col. James Logan.
In fact, James O. Logan was the son of the same John Edward Logan and
his wife Cynthia Ida Dorrough who were Garry Logan’s ancestors.
James O. Logan was therefore the grandson of David Latty Logan. His
great-grandfather was Robert Allison Logan, not Col. James Logan.
James O. Logan appears on the 1900 census of Logan County, Arkansas,
with his father John Edward and siblings Otto D., Effa L., John P. and
Emma T. Logan. 22 John P. Logan married Bessie O’Neal 23 and their son
Pete O’Neal Logan became the father of Garry Logan and his brother
Grady.
My own dear aunt, Daisy (Logan) Davis submitted the third Logan
family article to Logan County, Arkansas. Her article, “John T. Logan”
contains several misinterpretations of data that I would like to correct.
Our ancestors Col. James Logan and his wife Rachel had ten children
who reached adulthood, 24 five of whom were males. Three of those sons
died single and without issue. David P. died in 1849, 25 Benjamin died in
1852, 26 and Daniel Boone Logan died in Weaverville, California, in
1855. 27 James’ and Rachel’s surviving sons were Jonathan, who married
Sarah Sophia Sadler, 28 and James Jr., who married twice, first to
Elizabeth Whitfield and second to Emma Barnett in February 1875.
Jonathan Logan is my great-great-grandfather. All of his children
were born between 1841 and 1866. 29 His brother James Logan, Jr., who
died in 1875, 30 had a daughter, James Estelle, born the day before he
died. The several children referred to in James’ obituary included the

children of his sister Mary Wright who died when they were very young.
Both children were in the custody of James Jr. by 1860, appearing in his
household in the census of that year and in 1870. 31
The Jonathan Thomas Logan mentioned in my aunt’s article is my
grandfather and he was the son of Jonathan Boone Logan and Susan
Adelia Jacobs of Yell County, Arkansas, not Tennessee as stated in the
article. 32 Jonathan Boone Logan was the son of Jonathan and Sarah
Sophia (Sadler) Logan, also of Yell County, Arkansas. 33 Jonathan
Thomas Logan is the only one of the three Logan County residents
reported in the book that truly descends from both David Logan and Col.
James Logan.
Jonathan Logan was born on 28 November 1817 in Wayne County,
Missouri, to Col. James and Rachel (Steele) Logan. 34 Rachel Steele was
born in Tennessee, 35 and this fact may have led to my aunt’s confusion
about the origins of the later generations. Jonathan married Sarah Sophia
Sadler 21 June 1840 in Arkansas. 36 Jonathan and Sarah had eleven
children, one of them being Jonathan Boone Logan born 3 June 1849 in
Riley township, Yell County, Arkansas. 37
In her first sentence my aunt referenced a Sadler family book, 38 but
that source was actually the Genealogy of the Lewis Family in America
that includes the Sadler family. Sarah Sophia Sadler descends from the
John Lewis families of Virginia. The author of the Lewis book names the
children of Jonathan and Sarah (Sadler) Logan, but mistakenly calls
Jonathan Boone Logan by the name David Boone Logan. 39 A Sadler
Bible contains the marriage record of Nancy Rowland to William Sadler

as well as the birth of their daughter, Sarah Sophia and her marriage to
Jonathan Logan in 1840. 40
Jonathan and Sarah Sophia (Sadler) Logan and Jonathan Boone and
Susan (Jacobs) Logan are buried in the Moore’s Chapel cemetery in
Waveland, Yell County, Arkansas. 41 Their beautiful headstones are a
tribute to their lives.
Jonathan Boone Logan married Susan Adelia Jacobs 11 November
1871 and they had six children. 42 Jonathan [sometimes called John]
Thomas Logan was born 6 July 1880, and by 1885 both his mother and
father had died. My aunt’s article indicates that at that time, he went to
live with his sister Emma and her husband Dr. G. T. Blacknall. 43 But
according to Lula Katherine [Warren] Logan, Emma Adelia Logan was
about thirteen when her father died and she did not marry G. T. Blacknall
until 1890. John Thomas went to Booneville to attend school and Dr.
James Nelson Sipe took him in until sometime in 1890 after Emma
married Dr. Blacknall. Jonathan Thomas married Lula Kate Warren in
Booneville on 21 January 1905. 44 Their six children were named
Imogene, Lois Sue, John Warren, Daisy Catherine, Helen Josephine and
Rose Marie Logan. The other details of my grandfather’s personal
history in Logan County, Arkansas are correct and provide a very brief
account of his life in Southern Home and Booneville.
I descend through Jonathan’s daughter Rose Marie Logan who
married John Manning Methvin, also of Booneville, Logan County,
Arkansas. They had three daughters, four grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. My own grandson continues this lineage and is named
Logan Robert Warfield in honor of my mother’s maiden name.

LIBERTY CHURCH – LOGAN COUNTY, ARKANSAS
Liberty-Coleman Cemetery is located in Logan County, Arkansas,
midway between Magazine and Paris. At Driggs, turn off Arkansas
Highway 109 onto the Revilee Valley Road. After 1½ miles turn right
onto Coleman Road. You will immediately see Liberty Church and the
cemetery on the right side of the road.
There are nearly two hundred marked graves and slightly fewer
unmarked graves in the cemetery. The oldest marked grave dates back to
1862. You can no longer see the unmarked graves, because the fieldstones that marked them have been removed for easier mowing.
The cemetery is located in Lot 5, in the north half of the northeast
quarter of section 3, township 6 north, range 26 west. On 23 August
1912, D. E. Coleman sold one acre and thirty-six rods of land for one

Austin Penicks, and W. E. Jones. This deed was recorded in Logan
County Deed Book 47 on page 429.
In 1947 the church trustees moved Liberty Church about a mile to its
present location in front of the cemetery. It originally stood near the old
house of Grandma Coleman who gave the land. On 5 August 1881 Mary
H. Coleman sold the acre known as Liberty Church grounds for one
dollar to the trustees of Liberty Church: D. C. Watkins, J. H. Heathcott,
and D. T. Maddox. Mrs. Coleman specified the church had to be “free to
the use and enjoyment of all religious denominations” and used for
“religious and school purposes.” The original location was in the
northwest corner of the southwest quarter of the southwest quarter of
section 3, township 6 north, range 25 west. That deed was recorded in
Logan County Deed Book F, p. 184.

MISS MATTIE HUDGINS
The Earliest Born Person with an Arkansas Prior Birth Certificate
Submitted by Rebecca Wilson
[email protected]
Martha Ann “Mattie” Hudgins has the distinction of having the earliest
valid birth date of anyone indexed thus far in the Arkansas Prior Birth
Certificates. 1 She was born 6 June 1856 in a part of Carroll County near
1
Arkansas Act 96 of 1913 required the establishment of the Bureau of Vital
Statistics for an adequate system of registration of births. The State of Arkansas
officially began recording birth certificates in February 1914; some cities,
notably Fort Smith and Little Rock, recorded births many years earlier. With
the advent of the Social Security Act, other social programs and government
employment opportunities, people who were born before 1914 needed a birth
certificate. In 1942 the state of Arkansas began filing these certificates in a
separate set of binders known as the “Priors.” In accordance with Act 1254 of
1995, Arkansas law allows people doing genealogical research to obtain a copy

Harrison, which is now Boone County. Mattie was the daughter of Dr.
John Wesley and Mary Malinda (Byrne) Hudgins. 2 Dr. Hudgins, one of
the first physicians in the area, died in 1858 3 when Mattie was about two
years old. Dr. Hudgins and Malinda had been married only five years at
the time of his death and had three children, Brice Benjamin, Martha Ann
and Mary M. According to the 1860 census, Malinda Hudgins and her
three children were living near Mt. Pleasant, Carroll County, next door to
her parents, Brice and Ann (Rawlston) Byrne. 4
Mattie began her career as an elementary school teacher when she was
about eighteen years old 5 and continued teaching for about 54 years. She
continued to live with her mother until her mother’s death in 1906. 6 In
1910, Mattie spent a year as a missionary of the Methodist Episcopal
Church, South, teaching public school at Mt. Scott in southwest
Oklahoma. 7 She lived with the Thomas G. Welch family during that
time. 8
In 1920 Mattie was living with her niece, Iva Ruth (Bradley) Barnett
(Mrs. William V.), and her family on South Cherry Street in Harrison.
Also in the household was Mattie’s widowed sister, Mary M. (Hudgins)
of a birth certificate, if the person would be at least one hundred years old. In
1999 the Arkansas Genealogical Society began a project to index and publish
all of the “Priors” birth certificates. Four different formats of birth certificates
were used, each requesting slightly different information.

Bradley. 9 After her year of missionary service, Mattie resumed her career
as a public school teacher in the Harrison schools.
By 1930 Mattie, age 73, was still living on South Cherry Street in her
sister Mary’s household. Mattie’s occupation appears to have first been
written as “Teacher,” but was marked over with “None.” 10 The 1935
Harrison City Directory lists Mattie’s occupation as “dress goods sales.”
Mattie’s 80th birthday coincided with the Arkansas centennial year of
1936. The Harrison Arkansas Times included an article in their Centennial Edition on 11 June 1936 about her birthday party and about her life as
a teacher. In the article Mattie reminisced about her early years as an
educator in rural Boone County, which began “in the summer of 1874 in a
log shanty; the only equipment being benches made of half logs elevated
on wooden pegs.”
“Indeed, the school houses of the seventies and even in the
eighties were crude affairs,” said Miss Mattie in discussing her
early experiences as a teacher. “Fact is, everything was crude in
those days. Our mode of conveyance consisted principally of ox
teams and tar pole wagons. We manufactured practically all of
our clothing, even our shoes. Shoes for children were a luxury
then at any time except the dead of winter. I do not recall that
any of my pupils wore shoes to school during my early terms
though many who went to school then were almost men and
women. They usually had their pants rolled up while the girls
protected their feet from sight by their long skirts.
“My first term of school and for a good many years
thereafter was only for three months, usually in July, August and
September, designed to cover that period of time between the
laying of crops and the approach of winter. No provision was
made for heating and lighting, the season the houses were used
made it unnecessary.
“Webster’s Blue Back Speller was the only standard text
book and it was that because there were no others available. I
instructed in any book that a pupil happened to bring in. The
spelling book was used very largely as a reader and for language.
The ambition of most parents, or many of them at least, in those
days was to have their children read and write. Those two
accomplishments placed a person in the educated class.

“Great times we had on Friday afternoons in those days. The
last afternoon of the week was invariably given over to spelling
matches and declamations. Many parents came to witness these
programs. All the pupils, big and little, were required to
declaim. I have just a very district [sic] recollection of some of
the jingles and doggerel that were used for speeches. Sometimes
they got them out of readers, sometimes they got them out of
almanacs, but many of the smaller children depended on their
parents to teach them something.
“Among the more classical with the larger pupils were
‘Mary’s Lamb,’ ‘Haste the School Boy,’ ‘The Twinkling Star’
and some others that have found a permanent place in literature.
“Athletics in those days consisted of town ball, bull pen,
black man and marbles. The girls favorite was the jumping of
the grape vine before ropes came into fashion.” 11
When Mattie died, 1 October 1945, her obituary was printed on page
one of the Harrison Daily Times. She was buried beside her parents and
near her brother and sister in the Hudgins-Hudson Cemetery about ten
miles south of Harrison.

Miss Hudgins, Veteran Teacher, Dies Here
Miss Mattie Hudgins, 89, veteran school teacher who has 54
years of service to her credit in the schools of Boone county,
died at the home, 307 south Cherry street, early today.
Every day up to the time of her recent illness, the veteran
school teacher took long walks which she credited for keeping
her active, and made her way through the business district each
day on business with the spryness of a woman half her years.
Her father, John Wesley Hudgins, settled in this community
long before Harrison was mapped out. Miss Mattie was born
June 6th, 1856 at the Hudgins homestead south of town.
Educated in the public schools, she taught her first school at
what was then known as Spout Spring, near Olvey in the summer
of 1874, in a log school house when she was 16 years of age, and
continued her teaching career for 54 years with one exception
when she served one year as a missionary of the M. E. Church,
South at Mt. Scott, Oklahoma from 1910-1911. She taught for

20 years in the Harrison schools. During her teaching career,
Miss Hudgins taught three generations of several families and in
later years she had as her pupils children whose grandparents she
taught their ABC’s in the seventies. More than 100 of her
former pupils came from as far away as Chicago to honor her
when she celebrated her 80th birthday.
Surviving are seven nieces, Miss Dulcie Bradley with whom
she made her home, Miss Ora Hudgins, Mrs. Maud Woods of
Pasadena, Calif., Mrs. Obie Taylor and Mrs. W. V. Barnett of
Harrison, Mrs. Francis W. Kramer of Chicago, Mrs. Reynold
Gardner of Amarilo [sic], Texas; five nephews, Oscar Hudgins
of Harrison, John Hudgins of St. Louis, Mo., Walter W.
Haywood and Jack Bradley of Fort Smith.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3
o’clock at the Christeson Funeral Home by the Rev. William F.
Cooley, Methodist pastor.
Mary M. Hudgins, Mattie’s sister, married Samuel W. Bradley about
1876. 12 Samuel, born in Georgia March 1854,13 and Mary, born 1858,14
(probably Carroll County, Arkansas) had eight known children, all born
in Boone County, Arkansas: Mattie Dulsey July 1877; Walter W.
September 1879; Samuel B. January 1883; Troy L. October 1884; John
H. February 1887; Ivy Ruth January 1889; Mary L. August 1891; and
Marion G. October 1897. Mary died in 1940.
By 1877 Mattie’s brother, Brice Benjamin Hudgins (15 August
1854-1 December 1923), 15 managed to obtain enough education to teach
school. He was admitted to the bar in 1879, and began a distinguished
career in public service in addition to a law practice. “He was
prominently mentioned for Governor of the state at one time, when he
made a memorable speech in favor of an honest election system which
cost him the favor of some influential politicians and the nomination.” 16
In Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas, on 27 September 1877, Brice
Benjamin Hudgins married Josephine Bailey, 17 daughter of William

Harrison Jurist, Veteran Office Holder, Expires
Harrison, Dec. 3. —(Special)—Judge Brice Ben Hudgins,
aged 68, died at his home in this city Saturday night after a
period of illness covering several years.
Judge Hudgins had been conspicuous as a politician, office
holder and lawyer since 1875. He served Boone county in the
legislature in 1885, 1887, and 1889, being speaker of the House
during the latter term. He was judge of the Fourteenth Judicial
Circuit from 1890 to 1898 and was chairman of the Arkansas
Railroad Commission from 1903 to 1907, following which he
was again elected circuit judge, serving for four years.
He was appointed register [sic] of the United States land
office in 1913, but resigned at the expiration of two years on
account of broken health, and had been an invalid ever since,
having been confined to his room most of the time.
Judge Hudgins ranked high among the legal fraternity of the
state, but his most conspicuous trait of character was his rugged
honesty and his advocacy of the cause of temperance. An
incident in Judge Hudgins’ life which well illustrates the
character of the man was when, because of his illness and
absence from his official duties as registed [sic] of the land
office, he refused to accept a check for his salary for a year,
when by so doing he might have saved himself from much
financial embarrassment caused by his failing health.

parents and wife, who preceded him in death by several years,
are buried.
He is survived by his two sons and five daughters, Oscar W.
Hudgins of Muskogee, Okla.; John Hudgins of St. Louis; Mrs.
Obie Taylor of Muskogee, Okla.; Mrs. Zack Wod [sic] of
Claremore, Okla.; Mrs. Sam Bradley and Miss Ora Hudgins of
Harrison; also a sister, Miss Mattie Hudgins of Harrison.
[The issues surrounding the date of death of Judge Brice B. Hudgins
are missing from the film of the Harrison newspaper. The obituary from
The Arkansas Democrat is transcribed above.]
W. W. Hudson, who certified the facts of Mattie’s birth, was her first
cousin, Wesley Wood Hudson. Wesley had a brother named William
Wiley Hudson who could have been the W. W. Hudson on Mattie’s birth
certificate, except according to his grave marker in the Hudgins-Hudson
cemetery, he died in 1914. Their mother, Martha (Byrne) Hudson was
Mary Malinda (Byrne) Hudgins’ sister. The notary public who notarized
the certificate was Neva (Hudson) Villines, the daughter of Wesley W.

1891 CALHOUN COUNTY, ARKANSAS
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX
Submitted by Tommy Carter
[email protected]
Personal property tax lists often are useful as substitutes for the 1890
census which was destroyed. In the case of Calhoun County, Arkansas,
no substitute has been published until this one. Since no 1890 tax list
survives for Calhoun County, the 1891 list was used instead. The
personal property tax assessment list includes the greatest possible
number of persons for a census substitute because it includes people who
did not own real estate, and sometimes not even personal property, but
were eligible to pay a poll tax.
The 1891 Personal Property Tax List for Calhoun County is
arranged by school district and then by the first letter of the surname of
the taxable persons in each district. The school districts were numbered 1
to 35, but not named. The records are held by the Calhoun County Tax
Assessor in the Calhoun County courthouse in Hampton, Arkansas. The
extant personal property tax lists for the years 1886 through 1891 were
filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah and are available on Family
History Library microfilm 980973. The film is also available at the
Arkansas History Commission.

Book Reviews
Getting Started in Genealogy Online.
By William Dollarhide.
Published by Genealogical Publishing Co., 3600 Clipper Mill Road,
Suite 260, Baltimore, MD 21211-1953. 64 pp. Softbound, $12.95.
This book contains a lot of useful information. Any genealogist
could learn something from reading it, but it was clearly written for the
beginner. The author assumes the reader has no knowledge of genealogy
– he even defines “surname” – but there is no attempt to teach anything
about computers.
Mr. Dollarhide guides the reader through his seven steps for getting
started with family interviews, contacting relatives, obtaining death
records and searching census for the first few generations. Much of this
can be done online. The author includes a sample pedigree chart and
family group sheet in the back of the book for photocopying.
The seventh step is to look at the Family History Library Catalog to
find out about other resources that might help fill in the gaps. The
remainder of the book describes the best places to look to round out the
research.
There are brief descriptions and web addresses for the best places to
buy books online, and the best genealogy web sites. The “lineagelinked” websites are described, as well as the most popular genealogy
programs for maintaining lineage data. There is a good explanation
about the usefulness of a GEDCOM file and how to make one.
The National Archives are discussed and web addresses are given for
all of the Regional Archives, Research Centers, and National Personnel
Records Centers. There is also a brief description of holdings and a web
address for each of the major libraries and archives in the U.S.
The last chapter is titled “Research Help for the Addicted.” Here,
those who want to go farther learn how to find professional genealogists,
genealogy magazines, newsletters and blogs. The author includes a list
of what he considers to be the twenty best reference books for
genealogists along with a brief description of each one.
This book would be a great gift for someone who has professed an
interest in getting started in genealogy. It is small and friendly enough
not to intimidate those who are not yet into reading genealogy books.
Rebecca Wilson, Little Rock, Arkansas

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Genealogy, Second Edition. Christine
Rose, CG, CGL, FASG and Kay Germain Ingalls, CG. Alpha Books, 800
East 96th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46240. 342 pp. + index. Softcover,
$18.95.
Dividing genealogical research into six logical parts and twenty-four
chapters, the authors use a light touch, a bright outlook, and a brief and
basic format to lead the novice through the steps of the process. Along
the way they impart to the reader not just the dos and don’ts of
genealogical research, but also the sense of joy and accomplishment one
can experience in identifying cousins or ancestors. This edition contains
new information on the 1930 census, online research, and how to use the
Internet.
Every page contains one or more small boxes highlighting tips,
pitfalls, or definitions relevant to genealogy. From ‘why do it’ and
‘where to begin,’ through using pedigree charts and family group sheets,
to note taking and correspondence, using the internet and published
sources, and finding lost relatives, the authors lead the reader on to
original sources – census, courthouse records, cemetery records,
newspapers, and military records. Part 5 addresses getting organized with
filing systems, using correct citation, numbering and dating techniques,
fleshing out with historical background, and analyzing data for
agreement, conflicts, and relationships. Part 6 covers expenses, DNA,
and additional county and federal records.
This is a great book for beginners, and a good reinforcement for
experienced family historians. Appendix A includes an extensive
bibliography, computer genealogy programs, and educational
opportunities for genealogists. Appendix B holds examples of all kinds
of genealogical worksheets, as well as a template for an oral interview.
Appendix C provides census extraction forms for 1800 through 1930.
Try this book – you’ll like it. Despite the unfortunate title, it would make
a good gift for someone thinking about looking into his family’s past.

The Arkansas Family Historian, Volume 45, Number 1 – March 2007
Index of Death Notices appearing in The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
July 1 to December 31, 2005. Compiled and published by Oscar G.
Russell, 506 Loop Road, North Little Rock, AR 42120-2216; 2005. 249
pp. Hardback. $34.00 includes shipping.
Due to failing eyesight Mr. Russell has decided to discontinue his
indexing efforts, so this book is his final product. All researchers looking
for Arkansas obituaries owe him a debt of gratitude for the extensive
series of indexes he produced.
This volume is similar in format to the previous ones in the series.
The index is an alphabetical listing by last name and first name of people
for whom an obituary, news article, or death notice appeared in the
statewide newspaper, either the Central Arkansas edition or the
northwest Arkansas edition. In a landscape format the names are
followed across each page by the town and the state of death, the age of
the person at death, the date of the edition of the newspaper, page,
column, and country of death if not the U. S. United States Postal Service
abbreviations are used in the state column. Countries are abbreviated
with an upper case and a lower case letter in the state column and typed
out in full in the country column. The age of children under one year is
designated as inf.
The book contains 9,693 entries. Some of them, of course, are
duplicates because their death information appeared in the newspaper on
more than one day, or because their death resulted from crime, accident,
or disaster that was newsworthy on more than one occasion.
Arkansas Research, Inc. has taken over the printing and distributing
of Mr. Russell’s indexes in yearly volumes. You may reach them at
Arkansas Research, Inc., PO Box 3030, Conway, AR 72033 or call 501470-1120 for voice and fax. Go to www.ArkansasResearch.com for
further information.
This last volume that Mr. Russell finished will be deposited at the
Arkansas History Commission and State Archives and be available for
use there on the open shelves in the Research Room.

Family History Writing Contest
Arkansas Genealogical Society is sponsoring a writing contest for 2007 to promote sound
genealogical research in Arkansas and encourage quality writing and publishing of family
history.
First Prize, the Bobbie Jones McLane Award, is $150. The award is named for the long
time Arkansas researcher, author and publisher, in recognition of her contributions to
Arkansas research and to the Arkansas Genealogical Society.
The Second Prize winner will receive $75 and the Third Prize winner will receive $50.
Judging will be based on quality of research; use of primary and secondary sources;
citation of sources by footnotes or endnotes; style, theme and content; and use of
graphics (photographs, maps, charts).
Winning entries will be announced and prizes awarded at the October 2007 AGS Fall
Conference. The first place entry will be published in the December 2007 issue of the
Arkansas Family Historian.
The judges and the editorial board reserve the right to limit prizes to acceptable

Certificate of Arkansas Ancestry
From the Arkansas Genealogical Society, P. O. Box 17653, Little Rock, AR 72222
Do you have ancestors who would qualify for ancestry in Arkansas? AGS has
certificates in four different categories of residency. In which category does
your ancestor belong? It requires a little research to acquire a certificate giving
recognition to your family’s pioneers and settlers of Arkansas. The categories
are:
Colonial
This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to
January 1, 1804.
Territorial
This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to
June 15, 1836.
Antebellum
This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to
May 6, 1861.
Nineteenth Century
This certificate is for an ancestor who resided in Arkansas prior to
December 31, 1900.
To prove ancestry in Arkansas, a lineage of the direct ancestor must be submitted to
AGS, along with source documents to prove these facts. A family group sheet of the
ancestor who resided in Arkansas must be completed with primary sources as proof. All
sources must be cited, photocopied and submitted with the application. The citation must
be easily searched for verification. Examples of acceptable documents include: census
records, church or bible records, tax lists, court records, military records, land patents,
deeds, newspaper items, etc. Send copies, not originals, since they will not be returned.
Periodically, the applications are filmed by the Arkansas History Commission and State
Archives, where they may be accessed through the Biographical Index.
It only costs $10 to apply for an Arkansas Ancestry Certificate. To receive an application
write to Tommy Carter, 10106 Sulphur Springs Rd., Pine Bluff, AR 71603 and send your
name and address with $1.00 for postage or print it from the website at
www.agsgenealogy.org. Complete the application form and return it with $10.
