F CE to F CE MAY 2012 Arkansas Enterprises for the Developmentally Disabled, Inc. 2012 FIESTA FANTASY PROM On April 14th the 3rd annual AEDD Spring Prom was held for over 175 adults with developmental disabilities. The Fiesta Fantasy prom took place in the new AEDD Multipurpose Center in the Jack D. Wilson Activity Room. Dancing, pictures, Mexican fare and good times for over 175 of our consumers, their dates, family, friends, and AEDD staff members is the social event highlight of the year! Our AEDD Volunteer Auxiliary, Central High School Civitan Club, Flavors Catering and AEDD staff volunteers sponsored the annual event. Students from the Central High School Civitan Club support the Prom each year by making corsages and boutonnières, painting scenery, decorating and working at the event. The prom provides AEDD’s adult consumers the opportunity to dress up and feel special as they enjoy the evening. Thank you to everyone involved that volunteered to help make this night a memorable one! RAFFLE SPONSORS Sheraton Chicago Ft. Thompson National Bank of Arkansas THANK YOU JUNIORData CIVITANS! Friday (1922-1994) SGSCLC AUTISM PARTNERSHIP AEDD received a purchase order from UAMS for $20,000. The money is to offset costs associated with preparing our workforce for the upcoming autism waiver program. The Autism Waiver Program, the Arkansas Autism Partnership (AAP) is an n-home program that will offer intensive (20-30 hours per week) evidence-based intervention for children diagnosed with autism between the ages of 18 months and 7 years. We are very excited about this program and its potential impact on young children and their families. Young Philanthropists Nikolett Kovacs and Sarah Baird Nikolett Kovacs did not know what the word philanthropist meant when I told her she was one. It’s a big word to tag on a little girl with such a big heart! Nikolett visited the Lacy Landers Skills Training Center where over 150 adults with developmental disabilities are provided services by AEDD including work, social and daily living skills, plus therapy services they require. AEDD also manufactures candles at the facility that are sold individually, for fundraising events, or private labeling. Nikolett was so impressed with the training center, which she stated was “awesome and smelled good!,” she decided to set up a lemonade stand and L to R—Craig Cloud, Sam donate the profits to AEDD. Sanders, Georganna Huddleston, Nikolett recruited help by Debbie Grooms, Sarah Baird, inviting her friend Sarah Baird to Nikolett Kovacs participate. Nikolett and Sarah donated $29.00 to AEDD, all raised from selling lemonade at their stand. Nikolett said many patrons told them to “keep the change” when they were informed of what the money was being raised for. I foresee great things for Nikolett and Sarah. I have a feeling this is just the beginning for these young philanthropists and we offer our deepest gratitude! UNITED WAY PARTNERS WITH IBM to provide Little Tykes computers through a grant program Sammie Gail Sanders Children’s Learning Center received two Little Tykes Young Explorer computers through a grant from United Way. The computers are donated by IBM and distributed to organizations who qualify through a grant submission process. AEDD has been a United Way agency for over 20 years and receives ongoing monetary and volunteer support through the Heart of Arkansas United Way Agency. We appreciate those who donated to United Way and designate AEDD as the recipient of their donation and IBM Corporation for their willingness to donate computers to increase exposure to technology to preschool age children. PLAY BALL! Over 100 players from AEDD, CLS and other providers converge to play baseball on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Since the inaugural season, AEDD/ CLS continue to organize and lead the Adult League for Miracle League of Arkansas. Games are held in the months of April and May, they are played on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Come out and cheer on our teams! PIGGING OUT AT A PIG ROAST! Fred Norman is a member of Civitan International and is a world-class pig roast dinner guru! Anyone that has attended AEDD’s annual Hawgs for a Cause fundraiser knows how delicious the BBQ is. Fred has always been in charge of bringing in the roasted pig for Hawgs for a Cause, and in March donated his services as a “pig roast hoast” to raise funds for the People First and Southwest Little Rock Civitan Clubs. These two special clubs were formed for adults with special needs to provide an outlet for social and philanthropic opportunities. Over 100 people attended the pig roast where over $1,000 was raised to benefit the two clubs. People First and SWLR Civitan Clubs helped serve dinner and brought handmade auction items for a silent auction. Thank you to Fred and to those who supported this event and these special people! Wrestlemania 28 Over 50 clients attended the Wrestle Mania Watch Party in April at AEDD’s Multipurpose Center. Wrestle Mania T-shirts (donated by Unlimited Screen Printing in Cabot) were raffled off as prizes in between matches. Hot dogs and nachos were served and the event was viewed on the large screen projector via pay-per-view. Jeers and cheers throughout the evening proved that all had a great time!
