He arrives to a country currently polarized by issues such as immigration, social justice and income inequality. Pope Francis’ chartered plane from Cuba touched down at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where President Barack Obama and his wife and daughters paid him the rare honor of meeting him at the bottom of the stairs on the red-carpeted tarmac. Presidents usually make important visitors come to them at the White House. Emerging from the aircraft to loud cheers from a crowd of hundreds, the smiling 78-year-old pontiff removed his skullcap in the windy weather and made his way down the steps in his white robes. He was welcomed by a military honor guard, chanting schoolchildren, politicians, and Roman Catholic clerics in black robes with vivid sashes of scarlet and purple. Joe Biden, the nation’s first Catholic vice president, and his wife were among those who erism. His decision to roll down the windows reflected his penchant for trying to connect to ordinary people despite the tight security around him. During his six-day, three-city visit to the U.S., the pope will meet with the president on Wednesday, address Congress on Thursday, speak at the United Nations in New York on Friday and take part in a Vatican-sponsored conference on the family in Philadelphia over the weekend. During the flight, Francis defended himself between huge black SUVs. He promptly rolled down the windows, enabling the cheering, against conservative criticism that his conwhooping crowds to see him as his motorcade demnation of trickle-down economics makes took him to the Vatican diplomatic mission in him a communist. “I am certain that I have never said anyWashington, where he will stay while in the thing beyond what is in the social doctrine nation’s capital. Joking about doubts in some quarters over whether he is truly Catholic, he said, “If I have to recite the Creed, I’m ready.” Francis is the fourth pope ever to visit the United States. Francis’ enormous popularity, propensity for wading into crowds and insistence on using an open-sided Jeep rather than a bulletproof popemobile have complicated things for U.S. law enforcement. The measures are unprecedented for a papal trip and could make it nearly impossible for many ordinary Americans to get anywhere close to Francis. For all the attention likely to be paid to Francis’ speeches, including the first address from a pope to Congress, his more personal gestures — visiting with immigrants, prisoners and the homeless — could yield some of the most memorable images of the trip. “What the pope does in the United States will be more important than what he says,” said Mat Schmalz, a religious studies professor at Holy Cross college in Worcester, Massachusetts. “There are a lot of things he will say about capitalism and about wealth inequalby appointment only ity, but many Americans and politicians have already made up their minds on these issues. What I would look for is a particular gesture, an unscripted act, that will move people.” Wisdom for your decisions September 25th, 2015 Table of Contents 23 NATIONAL: Pope Francis arrives in US, faces a polarized country 22 ENTERTAINMENT: Spanish- language TV host Don Francisco bids farewell 21 FINANCIAL LITERACY: 6 Tips to Save on School Supplies 19 POLITICS: Bush says multiculturalism wrong for US 18 COMMUNITY: Church organizes community carnival in Pasco 18 OUR FAITH: Bow to God 17 SPORTS: Seattle loses at Green Bay 27-17 17 SPORTS: Sounders beat Vancouver 3-0 to take Cascadia Cup 16 COLUMN: From my Balcony: The US Congress: Meritocracy? 16 COLUMN: Dave Says: Taking care of final expenses tú Decides Newspaper 8220 W. Don Francisco, whose real name is Mario Kreutzberger, praised his production team and fellow performers for making the show such a long-running success. “Sábado Gigante” was seen in millions of households in the U.S. and Latin America and holds the world record for the longestrunning variety program with the same host. “A show is not done by one person,” Don Francisco said as he bade farewell to his audience. “It is done by a team, by many people, many of whom you do not see, you do not know who they are, but they work hard, they put their hearts into it and their talent into it.” Some of the celebrities who made brief appearances include Enrique Iglesias, Gloria Estefan, Shakira, Marc Anthony, and Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, handed Don Francisco a congressional merit award. Puerto Rican singer Daddy Yankee appeared via video link from his concert at Madison Square Garden. Among the staff, there were mixed feelings about saying goodbye. “Obviously there is sadness in the team because an era is coming to an end, but we should be happy and proud of everything we’ve achieved through this show,” said Cristian de la Fuente, one of the show’s regular performers. Don Francisco was joined onstage by his brother, his wife, his children and several grandchildren. After the show, Don Francisco told a group of reporters that he would continue to work in media, but gave no details. “I never thought we would get this reaction. It’s very emotional to see that this show had such an impact, that we showed to the very last day how professional we are,” he said. *SEE STORE FOR DETAILS 210 $ * UP TO BACK IS BACK AGAIN! Plan ahead. As with most things in life, it literally pays to be prepared. Shop for next year during this year’s sales; just be sure to set those supplies aside so they don’t get used. If you can, avoid buying supplies in August or January. Especially on non-style drive items that you know your kids are going to need again, like pencils or folders. Skipping the shopping during peak times can save you 50-75% off regular retail prices. A sk any parent, the backto-school season can get expensive quickly. Reports about how much money is spent on supplies vary. A recent report from TeachersList, an online school supplies list aggregator, puts the average amount of elementary back-to-school supplies at $70.93. Other reports, like one from American Express Spending & Savings Tracker, put the average cost closer to $1,000. Fortunately, there are some simple ways to help you save money when it comes to this annual shopping event. clothes and backpacks. Stores like REI or Costco have warranties that guarantee their purchase, meaning your kids can still play rough without having to replace these items. Look at what you have first. Prioritize supplies. Before you head to the store, be sure to take a look at what you’ve got laying around your house. Put all school and office supplies in one location and make a list. Then, compare that to the list of recommended supplies from the school. You may be surprised at the amount of supplies (and money!) you’ll end up saving. Comparing school supplies seems to be ritual for new classmates. Your kids will likely want the latest and greatest (and probably most expensive!) gear. Have a conversation and decide on a budget before you head to the store. Once you’ve decided on a figure, ask your kids to prioritize what item(s) are most important to them. When you get to the store, help them add up the costs of the items they’d like, thus making school shopping a math and real world lesson! Buy later. If you can wait, most markdowns on clothing, electronics, and shoes typically occur just before the year starts. (Don’t forget to check online retailers for sales too!) Your child may have enough supplies left over from last year to hold them over until the sale starts. Purchase items with a warranty. This is especially important for Buy in bulk and share. Wholesale stores like Costco or Sams Club offer great deals on select school supplies. Unfortunately they often come in mammoth, wholesale-size quantities. If you don’t have more than a couple kids with the same supply needs, consider reaching out to neighbors or other parents to see if they’re interested in By coming up with a plan early on to tackle back-to-school shopping, you may end up saving hundreds! PASCO, Washington M embers of College View Baptist Church organized a community carnival in Pasco on Saturday, with more than 1,000 people attending. Church volunteers – led by Pastor Gary Cooper – used the carnival as a form of community outreach, blending a traditional carnival of games, food and bouncy castles with giveaways for the less fortunate. Those in attendance were handed school supplies, backpacks and coats for their children. “I really wanted the church to make an impact on its community,” Cooper said. About 120 volunteers took part in the church’s carnival on Saturday. In addition to the giveaways, dental and health clinics were also on hand to hand out information. Church officials said between 1,200 and 1,500 people attended the carnival, which also included live music and dance performances. Ozzie Garza, a church member, said that the event was important for the community, because “a lot of kids in Pasco don’t get to do this every day.” This was the second annual event organized by the church, and Cooper said he hopes to continue the event next year as well. hen Moses and Aaron returned to Egypt and called all the elders of Israel together. Aaron told them everything the Lord had told Moses, and Moses performed the miraculous signs as they watched. Then the people of Israel were convinced that the Lord had sent Moses and Aaron. When they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.—Exodus 4:29-31, NLT After 400 years of exile in Egypt, many of the Israelites had lost their faith that God would help them. Under the racism and slavery and a thousand and one indignities they suffered dailty, some of them naturally despaired. But other cried out to the Lord. When Moses and Aaron came delaring the moment of the Lord —with signs and evidences to prove it—the people bowed down and worshiped God, who had heard their cries. Voluntary migration in itself stands as evidence of new hope. The fact that people have risen to go means that change has begun. Futhermore, God’s immigrants know that they have sought divine support for their plans. The Bible reveals that God loves immigrants and hears their cry—that immigrants play an important role in God’s plans for the world. The Lord whose name means “I am with you” offers you support . What are the signs around you that communicate the presence of God? Open your eyes and look. Consider the evidences of God in your life. Maybe this very Bible study convinces you that God is concerned about you and has seen your suffering. If you conclude that God sees you, bow down and worship God. Just as God accompanied the Israelites, God will go with you every step of the way. Copyright©2013 by Joseph L. Castleberry. Dr. Lorena Barboza [email protected] Well, well…upon searching for a fact, I found information that, if a bit old (2012), still remains valid today because nothing new has been released about the report that I am referring to that lists names, positions, numbers…nor has it been denied. Many people have the impression that corruption only occurs in Mexico and other Latin American nations, when we speak about the American continents. But in reality, it happens everywhere. As ranked by the nongovernmental organization (NGO) “Transparency International”, the US is not exempt, but is }Lorena Barboza among the least corrupt countries in the world. The funny thing is that these acts of corruption are concentrated in the congress, according to “Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington” (CREW.) The report says that “the congressmen have used their positions and millions of dollars to improve the economy of their relatives.” And although everything is done legally, because they draft laws to target funds where they are most convenient for them, obviously it is not a moral act. According to CREW, more than half of the members of the House of Representatives has used their influence to employ family members, grant economic favors or pay for services, and cited as examples the actions of Kay Granger, R-Texas, who granted $28.3 million to a project that was led by his son, and Democrat Michael Simpson of Idaho, who appointed more than $12 million for the company of his wife, among others. The list goes on, but this column is not enough to cite all of the cases. These examples of widespread corruption in this country make us feel at least a little more proud of where we come from. If you have enough money saved up to pay for your burial, and you don’t have any debt, there’s really no reason to carry a policy. No one is going to be harmed financially by your death, and no one would be deprived of the income that would be lost if something unexpected happened to you. But if you don’t have money saved, and you’ve got a bunch of debt, you might want to consider a small, term life insurance policy. At your age, if you’re fairly healthy, you can get $100,000 worth of coverage for almost nothing. Remember, you shouldn’t buy life insurance to leave an inheritance.
