The performances are beamed direct from the Metropolitan Opera's home in New York to 25 venues across Ireland. VERDI SAT 17 OCT 2015 6.00pm SAT 21 NOV 2015 5.30pm PRODUCTION NEW PRODUCTION ROBERTO DEVEREUX SAT 16 APRIL 2016 6.00pm In Franco Zeffirelli’s golden production of this classic opera, Nina Stemme is Turandot, the proud princess of ancient China whose riddles doom every suitor to seek her hand. Tenor Marco Berti is Calàf, the brave prince who sings “Nessun Dorma” and wins her love. The genius director Patrice Chéreau didn’t live to see his great Elektra production make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme who portrays Elektra’s quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts. RICHARD STRAUSS SAT 30 JAN 2016 6.00pm Truth and legend come together in this early Wagner masterpiece. Today’s leading Wagnerian tenor, Johan Botha, takes on the title role of the young knight caught between true love and passion. The Met’s own star Music Director James Levine conducts. Eva-Maria Westbroek and Peter Mattei co-star. The Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story. Opolais sings the title role of a country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Kaufmann is the dashing student who desperately woos her. Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. SAT 5 MAR 2016 6.00pm PRODUCTION In this third in a trilogy of Donizetti operas featuring Tudor queens, soprano Sondra Radvanovsky plays Queen Elizabeth I, forced to sign the death warrant of the nobleman she loves, Roberto Devereux, sung by Matthew Polenzani. One of the world’s foremost Butterflys, soprano Kristine Opolais, is in the title role. Tenor Roberto Alagna sings Pinkerton, the naval officer who breaks her heart. SAT 16 JAN 2016 6.00pm NEW MADAMA BUTTERFLY PUCCINI The drama of a young woman who sexually and emotionally dominates a wide range of willing victims, both male and female. Met Music Director James Levine conducts this wild journey of love, obsession, and death, with soprano Marlis Petersen in the title role. Production by acclaimed artist and director William Kentridge. Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on its stage. Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. SAT 3 OCT 2015 6.00pm Verdi’s masterful Otello matches Shakespeare’s play in tragic intensity, with Aleksandrs Antonenko as the doomed Otello and upcoming soprano Sonya Yoncheva as his innocent wife and victim. PRODUCTION BIZET This Goya-inspired production of Met favourite Il Trovatore takes place against the backdrop of a war-torn Spain. Anna Netrebko stars as Leonora, the Verdi heroine who sacrifices her own life for the love of the gypsy troubadour.
