It finally dawned on me to chronicle these accomplishments in the form of a newsletter. In a musical journey that so often seems isolating, I wanted to find a way to create a sense of community and connection. And on a personal note, nothing makes me happier than hearing from all of you and celebrating your good news! With kindest wishes, In February, I was honored to be a panelist and one of three esteemed judges for the Mannes College The New School for Music, Concerto Competition; Vocal Division. I sat beside Maestro Frank Nemhauser with whom I've had the honor of singing at the Berkshire Choral Festival. It was a great afternoon of wonderful singing. It is a pleasure to announce this year's winners: Mizuho Takeshita, soprano who will be singing Britten’s Les Illuminations and violinist Yada Lee who will be playing the Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in D major with the Mannes Orchestra in Alice Tully Hall next season! Congratulations to Rebecca Lurie who has won the solo in Azure by Duke Ellington. Rebecca and the Senior Jazz Band will be performing this Friday evening. It was a lot of fun and a big success for everyone. It was heartening to see so many friends and family members in the audience. Our Featured Work was the Vivaldi Gloria where students had a chance to be part of the "choreography of an oratorio" (stand and sit!) and it was a real treat to give the concept of a Featured Work a try for the first time! The students sang various solos and choruses from the Gloria and did a stupendous job. How glorious to hear the voices singing together! My idea for The Featured Work was to create a premise for study and preparation while giving the students a chance to participate in selections of an oratorio and to also have the opportunity to sing together as en ensemble. The panoply of solo arias, musical theater and song selections were equally as satisfying and everyone did beautifully! I was very proud! The Summer Recital will take place on JUNE 1, 2014 at the Ann Goodman Hall, Kaufman Center.
