art walk is october 9
Originally Art Walk was a simple
event. The children marched around
the quad to music and then returned
to their classrooms. Thanks to parent
volunteer Stephanie Brown’s vision
and leadership over the past five
years, Art Walk has evolved into
a fun, festive, community event.
Treasured by students, parents, and
school staff alike, Art Walk is our main
fall community event and the key
fundraiser for the entire school year.
Donations from families and friends
are used to purchase art supplies,
classroom materials, durable
equipment, and funding for school
wide gatherings.
The fundraising goal this year is
$25,000. After Art Walk is completed
with funds tallied, SACO will work with
teachers and parents to develop a draft
budget/spending plan. The budget
spending plan will be announced
for adoption at the November
SACO meeting. Everyone is invited
to participate. Once the budget is
adopted, the money will be spent to
ensure students have a great year at
SRCSA.
Last year was Principal Paul Gaudreau’s
first Art Walk. “As I moved through
the day, I was thoroughly amazed
by the multi-generational show of
support by the students, families
and staff, for this community
event. It was clear to me then that
this couldn’t happen without SACO and
volunteers” he recalled.
Jasmine Poe, mother of Milo and
Dasha Gossage-Poe, Volunteer
Jasmine works in the prize area to
help students convert their tickets
into penny prizes or raffle entries to
win the classroom baskets. She lights
up when she describes why she loves
volunteering at Art Walk. “So many of
the things we do as parents require
patience as we wait for the delayed
gratification of our efforts. Participation
not only offers a rare opportunity
for instant gratification of seeing
the results of your work, but it also
allows you to immerse yourself in
an experience that is the SRCSA
community; unique and distinctly

Alli Woodside, Art Teacher
Ms. Woodside is a big fan of Art Walk
because it generates the funding that
ensures the Digital Art Lab remains a
viable asset to the school. “SACO has
made the impossible, possible! Our
digital lab is over 6 years old. Last year
without hesitation SACO supported the
lab with an updated version of KidPix,
purchased more memory and found
the funds to install a program called
DeepFreeze to help our computers
last longer! In the digital art world
things move fast as technology
changes quickly. SACO provided
funding to replace dated digital
cameras to ensure students can use
technology in their classrooms in
addition to the art room to enhance
their learning and strengthen their
self expression. We are lucky to have
such an incredibly supportive parent
organization. When the next update or
upgrade is in need, the art room knows
who to call for support! Many thanks
from Ms. Alli and all the students at SR
Charter School for the Arts!”
Kristi Harris, mother of Finnegan and
Rennick Leibert, volunteer, former
saco board member
“Art Walk is a great way to get to know
all the kids in your child’s class! It is
also a great way to get to know other
parents. You get to see and feel
what an amazing community we
have at SRCSA.”
Sheri Emerson, mother of Dylan Head
Sheri appreciates that Art Walk gives
the students an opportunity to get
physical activity while building
community and cheering each other
onward. “It is so inspiring to see
the kids push themselves to
walk longer, harder, with their
competitive spirit! Yet they are
laughing and having fun the entire
time, egging each other on to achieve
more and more. Kind of a microcosm
of the larger school community. We
all are helping our kids and each other
to learn, grow, meet new challenges.
Ultimately, this will teach our children
through example...hopefully the
lessons will stay with them!”
Sierra Bradley, Fourth Grade Teacher
Ms. Bradley’s class has won the spirit
prize several years in a row. Ms. Bradley
that values, encourages, and
supports the arts, and creativity
in general, in such a positive way!
We like to sponsor the shirts because
we are proud to show the diversity
of the families in our school and the
local community. We love this event,
particularly at the beginning of the
year, it really sets the tone for the
year, welcoming families, and building
our school community, we’re happy
to support and volunteer, it’s very
fulfilling!”
It’s not too late!
not only does a fabulous job getting
her classes excited about the event, she
competes in the teacher lap walking
competition and always ranks in the
Top 3. “I love the Art Walk because it
is such a great time to get our whole
school together. It’s so great to see
the costumes, the parents and the
kids so excited to work toward
a common goal. The fact that it
raises money for our classrooms
feels secondary to the community
building that happens that day!”
Mo Bernal, father of Ivan and Vinny
Bernal
Mo Bernal, owner of Avenue Tattoo and
Anchor Rose Tattoo, has sponsored the
Art Walk t-shirts for the third year in a
row. Mo said, “My family feels a deep
and special connection to school— we
have been warmly welcomed into the
school community and made to feel
a part of it by the staff, students, and
families. I remember our first Art Walk,
and just feeling so great about our new
school, and the strong school spirit!
As professional artists, we are
very proud to be a part of a school

Santa Rosa HS annex (upper right)
In 1895 our Humboldt Street location
was an annex facility built for Santa Rosa
High School students. Later the site was
home to Fremont Elementary School
in 1921. In recent weeks Midstate
Construction crews were digging a water
line to the new music/dance building
and discovered bricks from the old
foundation of the Fremont Elementary
School building. Days later they hit
the High School annex’s tile floor.
Construction continues on schedule with
foundations and footings being poured
followed by rebar installation.

Promote your local business or service while helping offset the
school newsletter printing costs. Sponsoring the newsletter is just
$20 for a business card sized ad. The newsletter is sent home to
all SRCSA families and is posted online as well. Sponsorship forms
can be picked up in the school office. Contact Amy (aschaus@

We need parents to take photos at school wide events, classroom
events and field trips throughout the year for the yearbook. Please
label your images or include a note with date, event or class, and
photographer’s name.
1) Load files onto a USB flash drive located in the office on a
clipboard. Sign out a numbered flash drive and return it.
2) E
-mail your photos to [email protected].
3) L eave a labeled CD with selected photos in the office. We can’t use images that are blurry, too shadowy, or blown out
(too bright). Shots where there is action or movement, or that tell
a story are better than wide crowd shots. Posed photos are great
too. If you are outside in the sun, try using your flash as a”fill-in”
for dark shadows.
