Welburn gourds are known for their extremely
thick shells and for having skins that are easy to
clean off. Custom Order gourds are available
both cleaned or uncleaned. Gourds by the Box
(pre-boxed gourds) are also sold cleaned or
uncleaned.

How Gourds are Priced
Come to the Farm
Why not take an enjoyable drive and visit us at the Farm! When you do, please don’t rely on your GPS or
online maps, as they will typically lead you in the wrong direction.
Gourds are sized by diameter at the widest part of the gourd (not by height or circumference) and measured in inches.
For a map and detailed directions to the Farm please visit our
website at www.WelburnGourdFarm.com
Diameter is the distance straight across the gourd at its widest point
(see diagram, right), not the distance around the gourd, which is the circumference.
Gourds are never measured by height or length unless they are specialty shapes such
as sculpture or snake gourds.
Join us for a Beginner Gourd Workshop! Every beginner artist
will craft their own project during this fun-filled 3-hour event!
You'll receive a cleaned and cut gourd so you can get right to the
best part of creating your design. Bring a lunch so you can enjoy

Farm Location
For the lowest prices possible come to the farm and experience the thrill of selecting your own gourds
from the thousands of shapes and sizes available, including specialty shapes like zucca, maranka and warty
gourds! (These specialty gourds are not available via mail order because such a limited number are grown
each year). All prices at the farm are wholesale and listed in the chart below.
If you are unable to visit the farm and want the best prices available through mail
order, check out the huge selection of Gourds by the Box, Gourd Kits, and Pre-Cut
Craft Ready Gourds on pages 8-19. These “pre-boxed” gourds, as they are often
referred to by the staff, average 35% less in cost than gourds purchased with a
Custom Order.

Custom Gourd Orders
With a Custom Order, you can select gourds that meet your exact needs!
Want gourds of a particular shape or exact size? Need to request “gourds
with stems” or “gourds with flat bottoms”? Unlike Gourds by the Box, a
Custom Order allows you to order gourds that meet exact specifications.
To make sure you get the exact gourds you are looking for, all Custom
Orders are placed by calling our office and speaking personally with our
friendly staff !
Bottle Gourds: available in all sizes, please specify neck size (skinny, medium, fat), neck length (short,
regular, tall), and body height (short, medium, tall). Better yet, draw us a picture of the gourd shapes
you want and include it with your order!
Clean or Unclean
There is a $150 minimum order for all Custom Gourd Orders. Simply use
the information on these two pages and the custom order price chart on page 4, then call our office to
place your order, Toll Free 1-877-420-2613. You can also send us a picture or fax it to us at 760-7283965. Giving us as much detail as possible is the best way to insure your order is what you want.
The Hawaiian Ipu
By far, the Hawaiian Ipus are the most recognized shape of
gourd, and the most popular! These are not just bottle gourds,
they are bottle gourds with very specific characteristics, like
neck size and diameter, which makes them ideal for dancing.
Tall Body Gourds: available
in 5"- 13" diameter sizes; best
quality is in the 5"-8" sizes
When you place an order for Ipus, make sure you specify all
the characteristics that you need. Each dancer is unique, and so
are the gourds they use. We specialize in high quality Ipus. Please call our office to
check on pricing and availablity.

The Ipu Heke drum
The Ipu Heke drum, or double drum, is a traditional hula instrument.
It is made by cutting two specific kinds of gourds and fitting them
together in a precise manner.
The bottom of the drum requires a Tall-Body gourd that has a flat
bottom and is perfectly symmetrical. Unlike the standard Tall-Body
gourd, only a few thousand of these “Ipu Heke bottoms”
are produced each year.
Because of the extreme amount of labor involved in
picking out gourds for Ipu Heke drums, they are priced
differently from our regular Custom Order prices.

5"- 8" sizes.

Premium Clean Canteen Gourd Box
The Welburn Canteen gourd is known for its extremely thick
shell and beautiful, symmetrical shape. If you do any type of
carving or Dremel™ work on gourds, you’ll love working on the
thick-shelled Welburn Canteen gourd! These very symmetrical
gourds are prized among gourd artists.
Most often you can get the exact gourds you need with Pre-Boxed gourds at a price 20%-50% below
our Custom Order prices! (with a Custom Order we hand select every gourd to meet your exact
specifications).
With Gourds by the Box, the labor cost is greatly reduced because the shapes and sizes are consistent
and we can “pre-box” many identical orders at the same time. Which means you save money! Plus, there
is no extra charge for cleaning since all premium pre-boxed gourds have already been washed for you!

These fun gourds actually grow in the shape of an
apple! Paint them red, add a leaf design, and you
have a perfect, ever-lasting home accent.
Apple gourds have a shell that is more dense than
most gourds, which means they are extremely
durable, plus they will polish to a higher sheen. The
dense shell is harder, so when cutting, go slowly to avoid breaking saw blades. Ink Dyes and wax will not
absorb as much as with a regular gourd. (use a heat tool to help wax soak in).

are fade-resistant, streak-free, semi-transparent, water based, non-toxic, and come in 30

In the past gourd artists have used leather dye to color gourds, but being alcohol-based,
leather dye fades quickly, plus it can be difficult to work with, leaving streaks in your
gourd art and staining hands and clothes.
Ink Dyes give you the same translucent effect but without

extremely concentrated and a little goes a long way. Just

Heat Activated Glue
GourdMasterTM Pigment Powders
Creates a permanent, no-flake bond for both metal leaf and Pigment Powders that dries
in seconds with your heat tool! Traditional metal leaf adhesives average 15 minutes to
dry, but GourdMaster™ Heat Activated Glue is ready in about 30 seconds. Metal leaf
applied with this glue is so permanent you can scratch it with your fingernail and it
remains intact!
Unlike most pigment powders, GourdMaster™ powders are pure mica
with no fillers or added dyes! The durable, high-performance nature of
these powders means your artwork will last for years to come. Plus, they are
designed to work with the entire line of GourdMaster™ products, including Ink

Here's a short tutorial to show you just how easy it is to use GourdMasterTM Heat Activated Glue!
Step 1: Apply thin coat of Heat Activated Glue using a paint brush.

Step 2: Heat activate the glue using a heat tool for about 30 seconds or until glue has lost its shine. If in
doubt, heat longer. Some extra heat will not damage glue.
Step 3: Allow gourd to cool a few moments (metal leaf can stick to a hot gourd surface). Then firmly
press the metal leaf against the glue with dry hands or a soft cloth.
Step 4: Use a sponge brush to remove excess. If the metal leaf is outside your woodburned lines, use a
nail file or sanding stick to remove excess, then clean up your lines using a hobby knife.
