It is sponsored by the Calabash Club of Silicon Valley, a gourd patch affiliated with the California Gourd Society. We will be offering classes for adults, make-‐ and-‐take-‐its for children, a competitive exhibit of gourd art, opportunity drawings, a silent auction and vendor booths. The Festival is being held in conjunction with Uesugi Farm’s Pumpkin Patch, and attendees will be able to take advantage of their offerings as well, which include train and tractor rides, musical entertainment and food vendors. There is no admission charge for either event, just a $2.00 parking fee per vehicle. Make and Take It There will be a Make and Take It booth in the vendor area where children may engage in simple gourd art activities for a nominal fee to cover materials. Exhibit The Competitive Exhibit of Gourd Art will be held in the Barn. Gourd artists are invited to submit up to three entries at a cost of $1.00 per entry. The public are invited to select their favorites. A prize will be awarded to the winner at 4pm Sunday afternoon. An entry form for this exhibit is in the centerfold of this brochure. They will represent commercial suppliers of gourds and gourd supplies, as well as guilds and individuals who engage in creating gourd art for sale. Class Registration Two applications for registering for classes are in the center-‐ fold of this brochure. Individuals should list all of their classes on one form. Full day classes are $65., half day classes $45. Check individual class descriptions for additional material fees. Be sure that your classes do not overlap. Do not forget to include your payment with your registration form. Registrations must be received by the Registrar by September 15, 2012. They will be on display in the barn in the Exhibit area. Individual items will be available for selection through the opportunity drawings, including the two valuable works of gourd art pictured here. The recipients of all the opportunity items will be identified at 4pm on Sunday. Tickets for the snail and panda are $3.00 each. This class will familiarize students with choosing a gourd, learning about gourd types / shapes, cleaning, cutting and preparing the gourd surface. Tools and equipment will be explained. The gourd will be wood burned by students and different types of dyes and paints will be used. All tools and supplies provided by the teacher. SA2 Kumihimo Cord Necklace with Gourd Pendant by Cathy Warrick Full day Class $65.00 This class is for beginners. The first part of the class will be spent painting a pendant with acrylics. The pendant will be a pre-cut gourd shard pre-drilled for the cord. The rest of the time will be spent learning kumihimo (an ancient form of Japanese braiding) on a foam disk using rayon cord. The student will make an eight cord, 2 or 3 color, spiral braid with a loop from which to hang the pendant. The necklace will be finished with bullet ends and a clasp. The student will have completed necklace, the foam disk and directions for the cord to take home. Teacher will provide all tools and supplies needed. Saturday All Day Classes SA3 Banana Gourd Rainstick Full day Class fee $65.00. by Jennifer Wool Materials fee $10.00 Students will dye a pre- cut gourd, insert many skewers and noise makers. Gourd will then be glued back together and the cut seam decorated and embellished with leather, feathers, etc. Tools to bring: basketry shears. SA4 Marbling on a Gourd by Gertrud Turner Full day Class fee $65.00. No Materials fee. In the morning in this class students will learn how to float prepared acrylic paints on the surface of carrageenan and then move them around to create colored patterns. A prepared gourd shard will then be gently placed into the solution, creating the pattern on its surface. In the afternoon, after the paint has dried, these pieces will be cut to enhance the design creating pendants, ornaments, or jewelry. Also in the afternoon there wll be a large students to explore applying the marbling pan of carrageenan for technique to a small gourd. All the students need to bring is their creativity and a little patience. Please be sure all gourds have your name clearly on the bottom. Do not number your gourds, we will assign numbers to each gourd as we set up the exhibition. This form and the appropriate fees, must accompany your gourd submissions. Gourds need to be dropped off at the farm on Friday Oct 5th between 1PM and 5PM. No gourds will be accepted after this time. All artists will be responsible to pick up their gourds on Sunday Oct 7th between 4 PM and 5 PM. There will not be any category awards, but there will be a People’s Choice award presented to the winning artist on Sunday at 4PM. Release of Liability: I agree, in consideration of the Calabash Club accepting my gourds, to release and hold harmless the Club and it’s officers from any/or all liability, loss or damage. Classes SA5 Gal Friend Pins (half day) by Jo Cooley class fee: $45.00; Materials fee: $10.00 Jo is an accomplished gourd artist - She is regularly featured in galleries and various art shows and holds classes in her studio. This class is for Beginner and above levels. Students will make 1 or 2 doll pins. All supplies are included. Students will stain, wood burn and embellish the dolls. Tools needed for class a wood burner (if they have one) Several wood burners will be available. SA6 Mini Mask Pin/ Necklace (half day) by Connie Howell Class fee $45.00 Materials fee $10.00 Open to all levels. Students will create 1 or 2 mini mask pins /necklaces (depending on skill level). All items will be included in the kits. The students will design a face on the gourd - wood burn the design - stain & paint the various places on the face, drill holes for beading that surrounds the perimeter of the mask and bead. Many options will be available. The student will attach the backing and pin back, and they can drill holes to turn it into a necklace. Cording will be provided with materials. A tutorial will be provided with full instructions. Students need to bring a wood burner (if they have one). Some wood burners will be available. Saturday P.M. Classes SA7 Creative Doodling on a Gourd by Jayne Xavier Half Day Class fee $45.00 Materials fee: $5.00 Open to anyone. Instructor will show several designs from simple to complex. Students will practice on paper, then design on their gourd. Students should finish, depending on their choice of designs. Students will learn how to apply gold leaf. The gourd provided will vary in size, but most will be 3”-5” in diameter. All supplies will be provided and students will receive a Zentangle® book to keep ($16.00 value). This class is repeated on Sunday morning SA8 Gourd Doll Ornament by Connie Howell Half Day Class fee $45.00 Materials fee $10.00 Open to all levels, students will complete the doll or ornament in class. This is a cute doll standing about 6" tall, using the gourd, wooden beads and hair material. Students will wood arms & legs. All burn, paint, draw face features, and add material will be provided. Students will need the following: a wood burning tool, small drill, scroll saw, and a small round paint brush. The instructor will have tools that can be borrowed for the class. Sunday All Day Classes SU9 Beginning Gourd Craft (Repeat of Saturday class) by Jill Walker Full day Class $65.00 Materials fee: $15.00 Level: Beginner. This class will familiarize students with choosing a gourd, learning about gourd types / shapes, cleaning, cutting and preparing the gourd surface. Tools and equipment will be explained. The gourd will be wood burned by students and different types of dyes and paints will be used. SU10 Twining on top of a Gourd by Jennifer Wool Full day Class $65.00 Students will dye and drill a pre-cut medium cleaned gourd. They will learn how to add round reed for spokes and trim around rim using many different materials. Tools to bring: basketry shears, spray bottle , cordless drill (opt.) Sunday All Day Classes SU11 Decoupage Gourd Bowls by Audrey Fontaine Class fee $65.00 Materials fee $25.00 This is an all levels class by an award winning gourd artist. Each participant will complete a 6”-8" diameter gourd bowl finished with the paper of their choice. They will work with patterned, embossed and gilded papers, with specific instruction how to best choreograph your design. All materials are provided, including pre-cut and cleaned gourd, a variety papers, decoupage medium and acrylic paint. Students Good paper cutting scissors and a 1/2 in. flat paint brush. SU12 Japanese Leaf Bowl of need to bring: by Connie Howell Class fee: $65.00 Materials fee: $10.00 Suitable for all levels. Students will decorate a gourd bowl 7” to 10" using real maple leaves as their pattern, overlapping them to create a lovely design. They can either cut the rim showing the leaf shapes or have a solid rimmed bowl. The leaves will then be stained in the natural colors of autumn with a black base and stained background. The bowl will be lined with paper to give a fine finished look. Students leave class with a finished bowl. All materials will be provided inks, paints, paper and a tutorial with full instructions of the project. A wood burner, mask, scroll saw, and carver (if you have one). A Dremel® tool can work for the carving. Sunday A.M. Classes SU13 Small Gourd Mask by Jo Cooley Half Day Class fee $45.00 Materials fee: $10.00 This is a beginner and up level class. Students will go home with a completed mask. Teacher will provide all materials. Students need to bring: a wood burner (if they have one) Several wood burners will be available. SU14 Beaded Gourd Necklace by Vicki Dyas Half Day Class fee $45.00 Materials fee: $5.00 This class for all levels of skill. In class students will learn basics such as a gourd cleaning and preparation as well as how to create a beaded gourd necklace. Students will learn about dyeing and wood- burning, as well as how to make adjustable neck cords for their necklaces. The class will include tips and handouts about the process as well as a list of online gourd suppliers and gourd art. All needed supplies will be provided. Sunday P.M. Classes SU15 Creative Doodling on a Gourd (Repeat of Saturday class) by Jayne Xavier Half Day Class fee $45.00 Materials fee: $5.00 Open to anyone. Instructor will show several designs from simple to complex. Students will practice on paper, then design on their gourd. Students should finish, depending on their choice of designs. SU16 Gourd Oil Lamp by Vicki Dyas Half Day Class fee: $45.00 Materials fee: $10.00 This class is for all skill levels. In this class students will learn basics such as gourd surface preparation, and the use of ink dyes. Students will resist technique for decorating the gourd surface, a small oil lamp in class. The class will include tips about techniques, hand outs about the process as well as a list of online gourd suppliers and gourd art. All supplies will be provided.
