A rainbow can brighten someone’s
day. A colorful vision that shows us
that sunshine is peeking through the
clouds. A wish can brighten a child’s
life, rescuing them from a black &
white world of monotony and medical
treatments. A wish permeates through
the darkest days to show a child facing
a life-threatening medical condition that
the sun still shines. It shows them that
the storm may indeed pass and there is
hope for a brighter tomorrow.
INTRO
Dear Make-A-Wish friend,
The 2012 fiscal year was a wonderful year for wish granting as we granted more wishes
than we have in any single year. With the help of our kind donors, committed volunteers,
dedicated board and passionate staff, we granted 546 incredible wishes, making a
difference in the lives of 546 children and their families.
With our 30th anniversary fast approaching, we continue to have a singular vision – to
grant the wish of every medically-eligible child in our territory. Each fulfilled wish brings
sunshine into the life of a child facing a life-threatening medical condition. It provides
them with a reason to smile again and creates a rainbow of happiness and laughter
where before the skies were dark and stormy.
We also celebrated our first-ever Make-A-Wish Month in Southern Florida. In one
magical month of awareness events and promotions, $190,000 was raised to grant the
dearest wishes of 38 local children. We hope to continue the success of Make-A-Wish
Month next year as we again spotlight all aspects of the Make-A-Wish world from our
wishes and donors to our volunteers, referral agents and board.
This year, we started our Chairman’s Challenge, enlisting an elite group of
philanthropists who will pledge funds that will underwrite the cost of the InterContinental
Miami Make-A-Wish Ball so that more funds can go toward our mission – to grant
the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human
experience with hope, strength and joy.

Dear Make-A-Wish friend,
My son Gavin is a 5-year-old boy with an old
soul. Like Make-A-Wish® Southern Florida, there
is something magical about him. His ocean blue
eyes glisten like the sun. His infectious smile
permeates the lives of everyone he meets. From
the moment the wish granters walked into our
home it was as though a new path had been
forged for our lives. They lifted the heavy burden
of Gavin’s illness from the tiny shoulders of both
Gavin and his older sister Makenzie. Within
weeks we received a life-changing phone call that
Gavin’s wish to go on a Disney Cruise was going
to be granted.
The Disney Cruise was blissfully surreal, yet
the real magic was the impact the experience
had on our family. It was more than just
a vacation and break from reality.
Traveling on this incredible boat gave us the
perspective to appreciate the most important
part of our lives – time together. This amazing
boat gave us the gift of memories – happy,
heartfelt, everlasting memories. In the midst
of many doctor appointments and therapy for
Gavin’s illness, quality family time is difficult
to find. The Make-A-Wish Foundation wrapped
us in a blanket of love and helped us to rebuild
the beaten ground beneath us. This organization
does not just make wishes come true, they change
lives. This trip made us cherish the present moment and motivated us to appreciate the valuable
lessons right in front of us. No matter how hectic life gets with Gavin’s illness, they helped us
hear the laughter in our children’s voices again without having to hear the fear of reality, feel
the love of our family connection without interruption and accept that we have a new “perfect.”
Just when our journey seemed almost overwhelming Make-A-Wish came along and created a new and
beautiful path for us to embark on that has permanently filled our hearts with hope and perseverance.
Make-A-Wish opens a family’s eyes and hearts and helps them embrace every step in their journey.

To Go
My name is Marina and I wished for a custom
surfboard because I got my first surfboard when
I was seven and now it has holes, cracks, and is
falling apart. But I also wanted a wish that would
go on every day for many years to come. My board
was designed and shaped by a professional board
creator and one of my wish granters Katie helped
design it as well. Though from the very beginning
I had the hardest time choosing a wish, my wish
granters were there with me the entire time. I am
still and probably always will be in awe of how much
everyone at Make-A-Wish did for me.

The board has a crab on it to represent cancer.
DLBCNHL stands for Diffuse Large B Cell Non
Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The lime green in the waves
is the color of the Non Hodgkins Lymphoma ribbon.
The bio hazard was a joke because chemo would
come out of my pores and my mom couldn’t touch
me so I joked that I was a bio hazard. I wanted my
board to tell my story in a way only the people close
to me and I would understand.
The day of my wish was amazing. Words can not
describe how happy I was and how happy the memory
still makes me. There were many people there to show
support including the Melbourne High School surf
team and so many more people there. My board was

Marina’s wish was so special since she
designed the surfboard and incorporated
so many elements of herself and experience
into it. We started the wish planning
while she was still receiving treatments
and the wish process was important in
her recovery. On the wish day, Marina
had not seen the final surfboard and the
unveiling was so emotional. I don’t think
there was anyone there that day that was
not touched to their very core to see the
joy in her face. As Marina’s wish granter
and a member of the Make-A-Wish Board
of Directors, I am so proud of the work that
we do. We make a difference and impact
not only the life of the wish child and their
family, but everyone involved in granting
the wish.

A trip to Los Angeles was in order to make 11-year-old Hailey’s wish to meet actress Selena Gomez come
true. As a huge fan of her show “Wizards of Waverly Place,” she was super excited to have the opportunity
to meet the star up close and personal.
Once in California, Hailey and her family went to Dave & Buster’s for her special moment. They were
directed to a private dining room for a sumptuous buffet lunch prior to Selena’s arrival. Now for the best
part of the day; once lunch was underway, Hailey had her opportunity to spend some one-on-one time with
Selena. Selena really engaged Hailey personally and spent time with her answering questions and taking
lots of pictures.
After lunch, there was unlimited video game play at Dave & Buster’s and Selena joined the fun playing
games with everyone. To remember this amazing day, Hailey
went home with autographs,
a goodie bag filled with lots of fun gifts and endless memories.
It was “phenomenal” that Selena related to this starstruck pre-teen on a personal level. According to Hailey’s
mother, “It was just like having plans with a girlfriend.”

45 Volunteers
Our dedicated base of more than 500 volunteers plays an essential role in every aspect of
Make-A-Wish. From helping in our office and at special events to acting as celebrity escorts,
airport greeters and Make-A-Wish speakers, our volunteers contribute countless hours of
their personal time to support our wish-granting mission. In addition, our volunteer wish
granters added a personal touch to each and every one of the 546 wishes that were granted.

such powerful work for people
with challenging situations.
The wish is a way for families
to focus on good, and retain
normalcy. They so generously
allow us into their lives at a
time that isn’t easy and I am
