Paddy Fahy’s Jig Set
Trad Ireland
Paddy Fahy was a traditional fiddleplayer and writer of tunes from County Clare. We
follow his jig with two tunes by Ireland’s most famous harper Turlough O’Carolan (1670
– 1738).
The Goodnatured Man/ Tripping up the Stairs
Trad Ireland
This is a hornpipe and reel, composers unknown, from the Irish fiddle repertoire.
Back O’ The North Wind
Brian McNeill
Davy enjoys singing this song about Scottish emigration.
Farewell to Whiskey/ Drunk at Night and Dry in the Morning Neil Gow (1727 – 1807)
These are two tunes from the manucripts of Neil Gow, Scotland’s most famous fiddle
player and composer from the 18th century (and ancestor of our organiser, Mary Gow).
Carolan’s Concerto
Margaret Brown/ John O’Connor/Charles O’Connor
Nathanial Gow (son of Neil) wrote Mrs Margaret Brown. The following jigs were written by
Carolan for the chiefs of the Offaly Clan, John and Charles O’Connor.
Bonnie Jean Cameron
Trad Scotland
The text dates from the 18th century, but the tune was written by Alan McFaddyen in the
late 1970s.
The Mule Colt
John Egenes
This happy piece was written by a good friend of ours John Egenes. Texan musician and
saddlemaker, John now lives in Dunedin and lectures in Music technology at the University of Otago.
Side Saddle
Russ Conway
This honky-tonk style tune was number one in the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in
1959, and was composed and played by Trevor Stanford, better known as Russ Conway.
Turlough O’Carolan (1670 – 1738)
Turlough O’Carolan was the most celebrated Irish harper of his day, and over 200 of his
tunes have survived. Apparently Carolan didn’t excel as a performer, but had the gift of
producing melodies both popular and lasting.
Gowden Locks of Anna
was written by two members of the Irish band Stockton’s Wing, Maurice Lennon and Paul
Roche.

Neil Gow (1727 – 1807)
Donald Armstrong (NZSO), Andrew Thompson (NZSO), Andrew Joyce (NZSO), and Jian Liu
(Piano) play Mozart and Fauré quartets.
Neil Gow composed music for dancing, including this strathspey, The Marquis of
Huntly’s Snuff Mill. The Scottish reel Glenlivet (composer unknown) first appeared in
print in Kerr’s Merry Melodies, published in 1875.

Frozen Landscapes III Gareth Farr
Richard Mapp and Emma Sayers play Mozart, Brahms and Ken Young.
Gareth writes: ”Frozen Landscapes was written for Helen Webby and guitarist Davy
Stuart in 2006 as a commission from Christchurch Arts patron Christopher Marshall. I
intended it to be a piece that would fit nicely within the rest of Helen & Davy’s
repertoire. When Davy started working on it, his wife said it sounded like icicles, and
wondered if it was inspired by my trip to Antarctica in 2005. I listened to it again, and
totally agreed – somehow I’d unconsciously written an Antarctic piece without
realising!”
INTERVAL
Polkas: Tolka Polka / Polcai Gan Aimh/Sliabh Lucan
The first polka in this set was written by Donal Lunny, one of Ireland’s most respected
traditional musicians. The second polka has no known composer or name. Sliabh Lucan
