Yes, it would be a good thing for him to try it” was what my father said in the spring ‘72. He was trying to convince my mother that the Youth For Understanding Program would be good for their youngest son. My mother was not convinced. She was losing her youngest son to a strange country, a new high school and possibly never come back. Huntington Beach, CA. USA was a So off I went that summer of 1972 as a (FES) foreign exchange student at Edison High School, Huntington Beach, CA. My host father and mother were very accommodating and they put up with the nuisances of having a teenager in the house. I made new friends in junior year at Edison High School, spent a lot of time at the beach and even got better at speaking English. By the end of the school year I had learned to surf, gained 20 lbs. and discoed on weekends. “What a great year….but come home right now!” was my father’s order after 10 months. I sent him a picture of me with the afro. I returned to the Philippines and I finished my senior year in High School. After college, I returned to the US in 1978. My father and mother by this time lived in Queens, New York and asked if I wanted to join them there. But I decided to return to Huntington Beach. I loved it here in Orange County. I got married and raised a family here. Started working in various electronics , pharmaceutical and consumer goods companies mostly in operations and purchasing. In all instances I advanced from a supervisory job at an electronics parts warehouse up to my current day responsibilities as new products and promotions team leader at a cosmetics company. Throughout these past 30 years, I have never stopped going to school. I keep my private industry skills in Manufacturing and Enterprise Resource Planning current including obtaining graduate school degrees before our first son was born. As an extension to my professional agenda, I started teaching beyond private industry in-house training programs. I moved into academics. At first in the Junior College level, then California State University level and finally I still have contracts with private industry outfits in management and supervision development. In all instances, I have fun and enjoy what I do. Especially working with foreign students. After all, I was a foreign student 40 years ago and remember that magical year of being a “FES.” Who am I ?
