Consumers to Benefit from more Preventive Care
and One-On-One Attention
L
ewes family physician Jeffrey J. Heckert, MD,
CPE, FAAFP, envisions a day when healthcare
in the United States is organized around keeping healthy people healthy—when prevention
and screening are vigorously pursued to avoid
serious illnesses when possible.
He envisions a day when communication
between physicians and hospitals is streamlined and health data is integrated so that all
the professionals providing care to a person
have the complete information they need.
That way, when they need to intervene to
treat a disease, the care is coordinated and
free of duplicate services.
“We are talking about transforming
the way care is designed and delivered,”
Dr. Heckert says. “And, it is going to take many
of us working together to make it happen,
including the physicians, our nurses and office
staffs, the hospitals, nursing homes and home
health agencies, the government and insurers,
and the patients and families, too.”
Dr. Heckert is Chairman of the Board of
Delmarva Health Network, a physician-led
organization created in May 2013 to deliver
high-quality care with the most value for the
patients, at a low cost. The founding members
included 27 physicians representing eight
physician practices, and Beebe Healthcare. The
participation list of physicians, care providers,
“Each patient has unique needs. Care
coordination is anything that bridges
gaps along the care pathway.”
—Megan Williams, DNP, FNP-C,
Beebe Healthcare Director of Population Health
and patient assistance programs continues
to expand.
“What we have now is not an integrated
system, but a loose collection of fragmented
silos,” says Jeffrey M. Fried, FACHE, President
and CEO of Beebe Healthcare, describing how
healthcare has been delivered. “Beebe founded Delmarva Health Network as a vital part
of our strategy to transform healthcare in the
communities we serve. We believe physicians
need to lead this transformation and we’re
excited to have such a talented and dedicated
group of doctors to guide this effort.”

BEACON / OCTOBER 2014
Megan Williams, DNP, FNP-C, chats with Richard Pack and Jeffrey J. Heckert, MD. Together, they are among
those working to improve patient care.
Delmarva Health Network was approved
to participate as a Medicare Shared Savings
Program Accountable Care Organization
(ACO), providing about 11,000 Sussex County
Medicare beneficiaries with access to highquality, coordinated care. Launched in January
2014, this is the first Medicare ACO based in
Delaware.
Dr. Heckert, also CEO of Mid-Atlantic
Family Practice, explains that the federal
Affordable Care Act is driving much of this
innovation. “Though the Affordable Care Act
addresses topics like insurance mandates,
most of the legislation is targeted at changing
how care is delivered, with a focus on producing better outcomes for patients, creating better patient experiences, and lowering costs.
“Someday, we won’t have a fee-for-service
system as we have now. Instead, physicians
and hospitals will be reimbursed based on the
quality and value of the care they provide.”
HOW IT ALL WORKS
This change is a complicated one. It
requires integrated IT systems to share health
data between providers and the standardization of clinical protocols so patients receive
consistent care across the network. Delmarva
Health Network is implementing such a system now and has developed best-practice
care models for diabetes and cardiac and
vascular diseases, which are among the
chronic illnesses that research has shown
can be better managed if care is proactive
and coordinated.
“This is our
starting point for
slowing the progression of disease,”
Dr. Heckert says.
COORDINATORS
EASE TRANSITIONS
A team of care coordinators, led by Beebe
Healthcare Director
of Population Health
Megan Williams, DNP,
FNP-C, represents the
glue connecting the
physician practices,
hospitals and other
facilities like nursing
homes, and patient assistance programs.
These coordinators help patients navigate
transitional periods, such as when they are
being discharged from a hospital stay. The
care coordinators, for example, help a patient
fill out a form to get a walker or other medical
aid to help them avoid a fall. They help
patients make appointments and they also
help patients who need assistance paying
a heating bill, getting to a physician appointment, or having access to regular meals.
“Each patient has unique needs,” Mrs.
Williams explains. “Care coordination is
anything that bridges gaps along the care
pathway.”
One of the many organizations that the
care coordinators network with is St. Vincent
de Paul, which makes sure that people have
the basic necessities they need, especially
when they cannot afford to pay for them.
“We can better help people when we all
work together,” says Frank Walder, President
of St. Jude’s the Apostle Church Conference
of St. Vincent de Paul.
Medicare patients are the first group of
patients to benefit from this new method
of care delivery. Dr. Heckert says that the
Network is already approaching private health
insurance providers to expand this care delivery method to their clients.
Lewes, represents Medicare patients on the
Network board.
“I am excited to be working with medical
people in our community who are changing
the way they deliver medical care based on
results, not on fees.”
Pack sees Delmarva Health Network as
something that will improve communication
between all caregivers, from the physician
to the hospital, and to all providers of the
services that someone might need.
“I was very happy to see that the longterm care facilities are also supportive and
willing to participate in this transformation,”
Mr. Pack says. “This is such an important
change for all of us. We’re fortunate to have
Beebe Healthcare and the doctors in our own
community collaborating to create a new and
lasting model of healthcare.”

COLONOSCOPY SAVES LIVES
Colorectal cancer survivor Mark Cashdan, front, tells everyone he knows to get a colonoscopy when they are supposed to. Mark is pictured here with the team at Mosquito Control at the State Division of Fish and Wildlife.

FASTER RECOVERY
If Mark Cashdan had a single wish, it would
be that he had gotten his colonoscopy when
he was supposed to. At the same time, he is
grateful that he finally got it in time to save
his life.
“No one was going to do that to me,” he

recalls. “Most men I know won’t even consider
getting one.”
Mark, who races his 1955 Chevy stock car
with his team on tracks around Delaware,
even ignored serious symptoms signaling to
him that he probably had some kind of can-
cer. He attributed the blood to heavy lifting.
Finally, when he was 52 years old, and after
continual nagging by his physician, he went
for a colonoscopy.
Mark was diagnosed with rectal cancer. He
would need surgery to remove the mass and a
complex treatment regimen of chemotherapy
and radiation to halt the cancer’s spread.
IF ONLY . . .
“It was a big wake-up call,” he says. “I was
discouraged with myself. There was no reason
not to have had the colonoscopy at 50 when I
was supposed to.”
SURGICAL ONCOLOGISTS TREAT
COLON CANCER AND MORE
The first thing Mark did was to look for a
surgeon. His search led him to Chia-Chi Wang,
DO, one of two fellowship-trained surgical
oncologists at Beebe Healthcare. The other
is James E. Spellman, Jr., MD, well known in
Delaware cancer circles for his knowledge and
expertise. Dr. Wang joined Beebe in 2012 after
completing her fellowship in surgical oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo,
New York.
MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY
MEANT JUST A ‘TINY’ SCAR
Mark’s cancer was such that he was a candidate for a less invasive laparoscopic low anterior surgery that removed the mass. He had
his surgery in January 2014.
“Dr. Wang is top-notch,” he says. “It was a
good surgery. I had no pain and I have just a
tiny scar.”
His wife Denise adds: “It was unbelievable.
You can’t even tell that he had major surgery.”
But then Mark had to go through months of
chemotherapy and radiation. He couldn’t eat
and lost more than 10 pounds. There were
mornings he couldn’t leave the house.
“I don’t like to miss work,” he says. “I don’t
like to sit around.”
Mark didn’t want to miss his son’s baseball
games either and did his best to keep up with
games, as well as his work. A mechanic by pro-
fession, Mark continued to go to work in
Mosquito Control at the State Division of Fish
and Wildlife. Though neuropathy has made it
impossible for him to drive his race car, he
continues to work on the car and to have the
support of his racing team members.
Mark considers himself blessed. He had
two close friends who died from cancer,
and he believes he has been given another
chance. He is especially grateful to his
family and his friends at work, as well as
to the medical team.
Mark would also like to thank all of the
doctors and nurses involved in his care. “They
are angels from heaven,” he says.
“Attitude is everything. God Bless you all!”

After Surgery
At 84 years of age, Phyllis Radish says she
has always felt fantastic.
Phyllis loves gardening and cutting grass
with her ride-on lawn mower, as well as with
her push mower for those hard-to-get-to
spots.
“I go to the doctor once a year, if she can
catch me,” says the Laurel resident and DuPont
Nylon Plant retiree. “And I do what I am supposed to do.”
So, earlier this year, when she started feeling unusually weak, she knew something was
wrong. She immediately went to the doctor,
and a blood test showed she was anemic. Her
doctor sent her to get a colonoscopy, which
revealed cancer. Phyllis, a woman who had
not stepped inside the doors of a hospital in
48 years, needed surgery.
Needless to say, her family was concerned,
and her granddaughter, a physician assistant,
recommended Chia-Chi Wang, DO, one of
Beebe’s two fellowship-trained surgical oncologists. The granddaughter knew that Dr. Wang
was experienced with the minimally invasive
Beebe Healthcare’s Surgical Oncology Department offers an
advanced program in which fellowship-trained surgical oncologists
perform both traditional open surgeries and minimally invasive
procedures. Fellowship-trained surgeons have additional years
of advanced study and experience in their specialty fields and
have participated in expanded clinical, educational, and research
programs.
James E. Spellman, Jr., MD, is a fellowship-trained surgical oncologist. He is Board
Certified in General Surgery. He is an accomplished surgeon, researcher, and author of
professional articles in medical journals and
books. He is the Delaware State Chair of the
American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) Cancer
Liaison Program and a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons
and of The Society of Surgical Oncology.
Chia-Chi Wang, DO, is a fellowship-trained
surgical oncologist. She is Board Certified in
General Surgery. She earned her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from
Rutgers University and a medical degree
from the University of Medicine and
Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), School of Osteopathic Medicine.
Beebe offers a comprehensive cancer surgery

COLORECTAL CANCER WITH
EARLY DIAGNOSIS CAN BE CURED
The colon and rectum are part of the large intestine. Colorectal
cancer occurs when tumors form in the lining of the large intestine. The risk of developing colorectal cancer increases after age
50. It is among the top five cancers in the United States, yet offers
the most opportunity for prevention and cure. In Delaware, a nurse
navigator system statewide and a state insurance program for eligible uninsured persons funded by tobacco monies has eliminated
racial disparities in colon cancer screening and has shown a reduction in the death rate from colon cancer that is more than twice
that of the national average, according to a state cancer report.
Prevention
Preventive colorectal screenings in the form of colonoscopies are
important because they can identify polyps in the rectum and
colon before they develop into cancer. People should have a
colonscopy performed at the age of 50, and every 10 years, unless
there is a family history, in which case people are encouraged to
speak to their physician to have a colonoscopy earlier.
Risk Factors
• History of polyps or colorectal cancer
• History of inflammatory bowel disease
• Family history of colorectal cancer or adenomatous polyps
• Racial background
• Type 2 diabetes
• Lifestyle-related factors such as a diet high in red meats,
obesity, smoking, and heavy alcohol use
laparoscopic approach, and she hoped that
her grandmother would be a candidate for
the easier surgical procedure.
COLON CANCER DIAGNOSED
IN AN EARLY STAGE
Luckily, Phyllis’ cancer was still in an early
stage, Dr. Wang says. Instead of requiring
a large incision, the laparoscopic surgery
requires a small incision to remove the tumor
and other tiny ones for the surgical instruments and a camera so that the surgeon can
view the inside of the patient on monitors in
the operating room. Normally, patients are
discharged from the hospital about a day earlier than with a traditional open surgery, can
digest solid food sooner, and have a much
shorter recovery time.
Dr. Wang explains that not only does the
laparoscopic approach offer unobstructed
views inside the body for the surgical team,
but also research has shown that the longterm outcomes are the same as they are with
open surgeries. The tumor has to be small
enough to get through the small incision,
however. The minimally invasive technique
N ormally, patients are discharged
from the hospital about a day earlier

does not lend itself to an advanced cancer.
Phyllis had her surgery in June and could
not wait to get out of the hospital. She was
there less than a week.
“They kept asking me if I had pain. I didn’t
have pain. It just felt like I had done 10 or 12
sit-ups and that I hadn’t done them in a long
time.”
Since the nurses told Phyllis to walk when
she was in the hospital, she walked and
walked, way more than she was advised to.
“They asked me where I was going, and I told
them that if they would not hurry up and let
me go home, I was going to start making the
beds.” Within a couple of weeks, Phyllis was
back at her exercise class at the CHEER Center
in Georgetown.
“Dr. Wang told me which exercises I could
do and which ones I couldn’t do right away.”
Symptoms
While most people do not experience symptoms in the early
stages of colorectal cancer, symptoms can include:
• A change in bowel habits
• Rectal bleeding
• Persistent abdominal discomfort
• Weakness or fatigue
• Unexplained weight loss
When financial help is necessary:
The following pay for colonoscopy:
• Private insurance
• Delaware’s Screening for Life program
• Medicaid
• Medicare

Laurel resident Phyllis Radish, 84, was back to her regular exercise class at CHEER within a few weeks after her minimally invasive colorectal cancer
surgery at Beebe Healthcare. She says she was careful to do only what her surgeon, Chia-Chi Wang, DO, said she could do.

In 2015, Margaret H. Rollins School
of Nursing Will Offer Advanced
Educational Technologies
It has been easy to observe the steel girders
rising into the sky that have signaled the
growth of the Margaret H. Rollins School
of Nursing on the Lewes grounds of Beebe
Healthcare.
But the technological advances in
nursing being added within the walls of the
$10 million expansion of the 93-year-old
school are far less obvious. Yet, they will have
an important impact on the ongoing quality
of the nurses’ education.
One of the most fascinating technologies
will be found in the high-fidelity medical simulators that come in the form of computerized
manikins. These wireless manikins look like
people and can be programmed to produce
the symptoms of chronic disease, acute illness,
or medical event for which the nurses need
to be prepared. The manikins’ hearts pound
and flutter. Their blood pressure plummets
and they can gasp for breath from an asthma
attack.
“They are an excellent way for students to
learn new skills,” explains longtime nurse and
instructor Joy Bartell, MSN, RN, CNE. “Students
are able to practice high-anxiety skills in a safe
environment. They don’t have to worry about
hurting a patient while they are learning.”
Even though nursing students have many
clinical experiences in patient-care settings,
they often don’t get the opportunity to experience patient situations for which they need
to be prepared.
“For example, students need to see a child
having a severe asthma attack or a seizure.
They may never have the opportunity to see
that in clinicals. However, with the simulator,
they can learn to recognize and evaluate the
symptoms and how to react quickly.”
Joan Thomas, RN, MS, FACHE, Special
Consultant to Beebe President and CEO Jeffrey
M. Fried, says that the technology also helps
students to improve their performance and
proficiency, and it better prepares them for
a healthcare environment that is continually
becoming more complex.
This new technology is being added as the
school is updating and revising its curriculum,
says Karen Pickard, MSN, RN, CNE, the School’s
Program Administrator. Classes will be held in
the new building in the Fall 2015 semester,
which will begin in August 2015.

CATCHING YOUR BREATH
Beebe Offers the Latest
Radiofrequency Technology in
the Treatment of Severe Asthma
Until Sarah Bull was in her 40s, she had no
problems breathing. Then one night, her
throat seemed to close up on her and she
couldn’t catch her breath. For the next 20
years, she was plagued by the coughing and
wheezing and breathlessness of asthma.
She took a laundry list of medications but
still suffered serious attacks. Since she and her
husband Bobby live adjacent to farm fields
just outside the city of Millsboro, they made
8

sure that the doors and windows in their
house were closed and that the air conditioning always ran in the summer months. Her
coughing and wheezing often made her feel
weak as she gasped for air.
“I love people and I didn’t want to stay
home,” she says, adding that she kept as busy
as she could. Sarah ran Sarah’s Loving Care
day care in her home for 12½ years for people
who worked at the Pinnacle Foods plant
Sarah Bull suffered for years with debilitating asthma attacks until
last year when fellowship-trained pulmonologist Vikas Batra, MD,
performed a new procedure called bronchial thermoplasty on her.
While she still takes medications, she says she no longer suffers
from serious attacks.
before it closed. She and Bobby raised three
sons. She is still active in the outreach ministries for the Pentecostal Church in Millsboro,
near her home.
But the asthma attacks wore on her and
seemed to be getting worse each time. Then,
in the spring of 2013, Lewes pulmonologist
Vikas Batra, MD, suggested that they might
try a new treatment on her called bronchial
thermoplasty.
“Bronchial thermoplasty is a treatment
option for people who have severe, persistent
asthma and who are not getting better with
Vikas Batra, MD, is assisted by specialized clinicians when he performs the bronchial thermoplasty procedure

usual medications,” Dr. Batra explains. “It is not
a cure. But studies have been showing that it
causes a decrease in the number and severity
of asthma attacks.”
The AIR2 Clinical trial demonstrated that
32 percent of patients who finished the trial
had fewer severe attacks, 66 percent had fewer
missed days of work, and 84 percent had a
reduction in emergency room visits compared
with the year before the treatment. The AIR2 5
year follow-up which was published in Journal
of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in
December 2013, showed that the results seen
at year one were maintained over 5 years.
Studies are continuing.
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that can
cause the airways to narrow so that less oxygen flows into the lungs. Uncontrolled asthma
is serious, as it can cause permanent damage
to the airways. Symptoms are wheezing, tightness in the chest, coughing, and shortness of
breath. There is no cure, but there are medications that can help manage it.
Dr. Batra, who is
Board Certified in
Pulmonary Medicine
and Critical Care
Medicine, and
fellowship-trained
in Pulmonary,
Critical Care, and
Sleep Medicine, is
certified to perform
the bronchial thermoplasty procedure.
Bronchial thermoplasty uses a bronchoscope to insert
a radiofrequency device into the patient’s
airways that heats the smooth muscle in the
airways to lessen the constriction. The procedure, which includes three sessions that take
place a few weeks apart, is performed in the
operating room. The patient is deeply sedated
and usually goes home the same day. There is
no incision. Dr. Batra works with a specialized
team that includes nurse practitioner Caryn B.
Chasanov, an anesthesiologist, and a respiratory therapist.
Dr. Batra has been performing the procedure at Beebe Healthcare since early 2013.
He was the first pulmonologist on Delmarva
to use the technology. Beebe pulmonologists
Ercilia E. Arias, MD, and Victor Banzon, MD,
also are certified to perform bronchial
thermoplasty.
Dr. Batra says that he is closely monitoring
his patients’ results, and their outcomes match
those of the clinical trials. Sarah says that she
can see a real difference in how she feels.
“It’s done a lot,” she says, a year after her
treatment. “I haven’t had an asthma attack
like I used to have.”
Now 65 years old, Sarah says she still takes
medicine, and she still doesn’t know what she
is allergic to, but she is feeling much better
than she has for years.
BRONCHIAL THERMOPLASTY
Bronchial thermoplasty (BT) is an outpatient bronchoscopy
procedure that uses radiofrequency to reduce excessive
smooth muscle in the airways. During an asthma attack, this
muscle constricts the airways, making breathing difficult. BT
reduces the amount of excess muscle and helps minimize the
narrowing of airways during an asthma attack.
The Procedure
Bronchial thermoplasty at Beebe Healthcare is performed by
a Board Certified pulmonologist together with a specialized
team that includes an anesthesiologist, a respiratory therapist,
and a nurse practitioner in an operating room.
The treatment consists of three consecutive sessions, each
about an hour long and separated by three or four weeks. The
patient is deeply sedated. In each session, the pulmonologist
focuses on a different part of the lungs. The pulmonologist
introduces a special device into the patient’s airways through
a bronchoscope. A bronchoscope is a long, flexible tube with a
camera on one end that allows the physician to see inside the
airways. No incision is required.
Following the procedure, the patient is monitored for two to
four hours and usually goes home the same day.
Results
Bronchial thermoplasty decreases the severity and frequency
of asthma attacks. It does not eliminate the need for medication, nor does it have any impact on the patient’s allergies.
Benefit vs. Risk
In clinical trials, 79% of patients treated with BT reported
significant improvements in their asthma-related quality of
life-including a reduction in asthma attacks, ER visits, and
hospitalizations for respiratory symptoms and days missed
from work or school. Additionally, in follow up trial*, results
seen at year 1, were maintained for 5 years. As with any
procedure, there are risks, and individual results may vary.
The most common side effect of bronchial thermoplasty
is temporary worsening of respiratory-related symptoms.
There is a 3.4 percent risk per procedure that these adverse
symptoms will require hospitalization.
*Results were reported in the December 2013 issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical
Immunology in the story “Bronchial thermoplasty: Long-term safety and effectiveness in
patients with severe persistent asthma.”
As part of the bronchial thermoplasty procedure, a special device is introduced into the patient’s airways through a bronchoscope. The device heats
the smooth muscle in the airways to lessen the constriction.

Excitement Builds Over Beebe’s
Upcoming Century Celebrations
I
n 2016, Beebe will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and Beebe Healthcare hopes to energize the community with a year of events that
include both historical activities and modernday preventive health educational programs.
Jan McCarty, Christine Strauss Moore, and
a committee of volunteers are leading the
celebration planning that has already begun
and will continue to build throughout 2015.
“Beebe has an incredible and important
history,” says Mrs. McCarty, a longtime Beebe
Board of Directors member and community
business leader. She and Moore already have
been looking at early 20th-century photographs that Lewes historian Hazel Brittingham
has collected. Historic medical memorabilia
also is being categorized and eventually will
be shared with the public.
“In my 20 years on the Board, I have seen
the tremendous growth and expansion of
Beebe, and more importantly, the expansion
of very notable, award-winning healthcare
services,” Mrs. McCarty says. “We want everyone at Beebe, everyone in the community,
and everyone touched by Beebe to be
involved in this yearlong celebration.”
Mrs. Moore, a prominent real estate agent
in the Lewes and Rehoboth area, was excited
to join the committee planning the events.
Mrs. Moore is a member of the Beebe Medical
Foundation Board of Ambassadors and has
served as the chairperson for the Art Auction
and Beebe Ball, events that raise funds to support Beebe Healthcare programs and services.
“I am learning so much about Beebe’s history,” Mrs. Moore says. “It’s an amazing story
that I am very excited to tell.”
Leanne Prosser, known by many in the
local community for her expertise in event
planning, is coordinating the celebrations.
“Beebe is the center of this community,”
she says. “The care Beebe gives is something
to be celebrated.”
The committee hopes to share Beebe’s history and future plans with the community in
a meaningful way. So far, many community
members have been excited to get involved.
“We hope to focus on Beebe’s history,
where we are now, and on our bright future,”
Mrs. Prosser says.
The Beebe Medical Foundation also is promoting the new 1916 Club, established earlier
this year. Created in honor of the founding
year of Beebe, members generously contribute $1,916 annually to the Foundation. Gifts
can be designated to a specific department
of your choice, and your support in this
club helps us save and change lives daily.
Members will be invited to a special breakfast
with Beebe leadership. They will take a private
tour of the hospital, be recognized on the
Wall of Honor located at the Medical Center
in Lewes, and receive 1916 lapel pins and car
magnets/decals.

that include both historical activities
and modern-day preventive health
educational programs.
Built by the Beebe brothers themselves, this small structure was the birthplace of
Beebe Hospital. Drs. James and Richard Beebe constructed the hospital on cement
blocks, and inside its walls there was just enough space for two patient rooms and
an office. The brothers were joined by a staff of two nurses and Dr. James Beebe’s
wife Elsie, who did all the cooking for the hospital.

WAYS TO GIVE TO BEEBE HEALTHCARE
Beebe Medical Foundation is located in the former historic home of
Dr. Richard Beebe, who co-founded Beebe Healthcare in 1916 with his
brother Dr. James Beebe. The house originally stood down the street
on the site of what is today the clinical building of the hospital.

Beebe Honor Roll of Donors
B
eebe Medical Foundation was established in 1989 with the
sole mission to raise philanthropic support for Beebe Healthcare.
Through the efforts of the Foundation more than $45 million
has been raised to support new construction and renovation of
medical facilities, new and ongoing medical programs, and to
establish endowment funds to ensure Beebe will always be
available for this community.
As an independent, not-for-profit organization, Beebe Healthcare
relies on the generosity of the many individuals, businesses, and
foundations that are listed in this Honor Roll of Donors.
Thomas J. Cooper, Chairman, Beebe Medical Foundation
William Swain Lee, Chairman, Beebe Healthcare
Nursing Education Campaign
Nurses provide frontline care and comfort at a difficult time in the lives of patients and their families, but there
is a critical shortage of nurses in Delaware and across the country.
The new Nursing Education Campaign will help provide for the renovation and construction of the new Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing at Beebe. The new school will allow Beebe to double our graduating classes,
helping to alleviate the shortage of nurses in our area. The Foundation exceeded the campaign goal and raised
$8,092,246 for the project. The school is set to open in the spring of 2015.

Annual Fund
The Beebe Annual Fund is one of the most important sources of funds for Beebe Healthcare. Unrestricted and restricted funds contributed through
the Annual Fund support ongoing operations and make possible various community programs that otherwise would not be sustainable.
1916 Leadership Club
Beebe Healthcare will mark a milestone in 2016, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of
Beebe Hospital in 1916. The milestone also recognizes the generosity of our community that has helped Beebe Hospital develop into Beebe
Healthcare. Beebe Healthcare denotes Beebe’s new role in our community of not only providing excellence in care for the sick but helping to
prevent illness through preventive care and education.
Beebe Medical Foundation has established the new 1916 Club in honor of Beebe’s founding. Members of the club donate $1,916 or more each year
for the Annual Fund. These leadership gifts support our commitment to extraordinary care and services for our patients delivered by dedicated
healthcare professionals. These generous individuals gave $148,356 to the Annual Fund.

25th Annual Best of the Beach Art Auction,
Dinner, and Dance June 14, 2014
This annual summer event, held in June, has become a tradition for the many friends who come together each year to kick off the summer, to bid
on wonderful items and outstanding art, and to enjoy a wonderful evening together.
The 25th Anniversary Best of the Beach Art Auction, Dinner, and Dance raised $104,140 to provide a Simulation Trainer manikin for the new
Margaret H. Rollins School of Nursing. A Simulation Trainer is a manikin and software system that performs and reacts like a real-life patient. Using
a Simulation manikin provides students the opportunity to participate in a multitude of clinical circumstances including high-anxiety situations in
a safe learning environment. As a result, learners build confidence in their assessments, skills, communication techniques, and decision-making
abilities. Simulation training allows for an active learning environment and lends itself perfectly to nursing education.

18th Annual Holiday of Lights
Tree Lighting December 5, 2013
Once again, the front lawn of Beebe Healthcare was filled with the voices of children singing carols as the
Christmas tree was lit with colorful lights representing friends and loved ones who are being honored and
remembered.
Last December’s event raised over $7,000. The proceeds from this event benefited Beebe Healthcare’s
Population Health Programs of disease prevention, screening, and early diagnosis.

The Jean & Joan Fund was established in the memory of Jean James and Joan Martin, two outstanding women who lost their valiant battles with
cancer. During their final months, both women were surrounded by families that loved and cared for them and a circle of friends that generously gave
their time and support.
It is most important that people going through these trying times receive all the physical and spiritual support available. The goal of the Jean & Joan
Fund is to assist the Tunnell Cancer Center in providing care and comfort for patients.
This year the tournament raised $25,000. Jean & Joan Fund Golf Tournament has contributed $379,100 to the Tunnell Cancer Center since its inception.
The Jean & Joan Fund is honoring
Cherri Rich, Executive Director of
Oncology Services at Tunnell
Cancer Center.

BACK TO SCHOOL
Don’t Let Children
Start Life With a
Bad Back
More than half of all school-age children are
carrying backpacks that are too heavy for them;
64 percent of students aged 11–15 experience
back pain due to heavy backpacks.
Alice Workman, OTR/L, an occupational therapist
with Beebe Healthcare Rehab Services, sees students who are experiencing back issues as a result
of wearing heavy backpacks.
“Occupational therapists educate students on
proper body mechanics, types of backpacks available, and the most appropriate backpack for the
student,” Workman says.
As part of National School Backpack Awareness
Day, the third Wednesday in September, Beebe
Healthcare wants to make sure students are safe.
Here are some backpack safety tips:
• Backpacks should weigh less than 10 percent of
a student’s body weight.
• Consider using a wheeled backpack.
• Use both straps to evenly distribute the weight.
• Adjust the shoulder straps so the backpack rests
snugly on the student’s back—it should not sag.
• The bottom of the backpack should not be more
than four inches below the waistline.
• Load the heaviest items closest to the student’s
back.
Be safe this school year!
