PRESIDENT’S REPORT
From the buzz and excitement of last year, to the disappointment and empty
feeling for 2010. That’s football. While we didn’t get the results on the field we
all tried so hard for, the effort put in was great.
Despite the number of injuries,
the positives that came out of this
year was the number of young and
upcoming footballers who got their
chance to play senior football.
To all of our coaches for 2010, many
thanks for your positive attitudes
and tireless effort. Whether we
finish in the four or not the work put in by our support staff is full
on and demanding and for that we thank them all.
I would like to thank 2009 premiership Coach Garry Fuller for
amazing commitment to our club and although he will be around
in some capacity has decided to have a spell from coaching.
On behalf of the playing group the board and all members and
supporters thank you.
To our dedicated group of footballers, from the very young to
the one’s getting on many thanks for your effort and outstanding
behaviour for the year. To all of our footballers that have put their
names into the 2010 AFL draft good luck and if you miss out the
SFFC will do all we can and with your help try to get you there
next year.
I would like now to thank our Board for their hard working effort.
Like our effort in the football department, plenty of hard work
but no chocolates it was much the same with our finances, a hard
working board with a poor result at the end. We sat down and
looked at the expenses at our last Board meeting and how they
have increased over the past twelve months and will have to look
at many ways of cost saving over the years to come.
Our board realize that next year is important re our finances and is
committed to the task as is our CEO Brian Ciccotosto.
DIRECTORS:
Peter Christie Vice President
Salvatore Capolingua
Don Pasqua
Brad Collard
Tom Bottrell
To Vido, Bradd, Louise, Boyden & Robyn many thanks for 2010.
To Steve McCarthy, you do a great job for this football club and
on behalf of our Members the Board and our players many thanks.
Our football club has all types of pressures placed on it in many
ways and it’s thanks to our CEO Brian Ciccotosto who has
continued to reinvent himself to keep up with the changes placed
on WAFL clubs today great job, Cicco.
Another great effort was performed by our Past Players under
the leadership of Wayne Delmenico and Bob Bright. They kept
performing in entertaining our playing group and raising funds for
different groups. Outstanding job.
To our members we are currently in talks with the Fremantle
Football club re the development of a complete set of new
facilities for our club .The reason for this is if the Fremantle
football club is to be successful the need for bigger and upgraded
facilities is paramount. In saying that it is the boards responsibility
to make sure before any arrangements are made all members
will be informed and given the opportunity have a look at all the
designs and have a vote on the outcome.
We didn’t make a lot of money in the bar this year and
unfortunately prices will have to go up with the increases in
operating costs and higher prices in product, but the presentation
of our bar staff and the way they treated our members was second
to none.
In stating the above we are in good shape to turn it all around for
next year. Bob Lahiff, to you and your staff well done and we look
forward to next year.
I would like to wish our new Football Manager all the best with
our club. Brent Dawkins comes to us with a wealth of experience
after fourteen years with the Fremantle Football Club.
To Marion and her loyal band of ladies thank you for your
continued work and the way you help this football club with your
afternoon teas and healthy food.
And finally to our loyal members and sponsors many thanks for
putting your money into our football club. You people alone are
the life line of our club and we could not operate without you.
Anthony Van Der Wielen
And finally the South Fremantle Football Club is a great club to
be involved with. But that’s not enough. We need to improve all
aspects of our club to keep up.
Tom Bottrell is retiring as Director, Tom has been a loyal and
dedicated director to the club and I thank him for his services.
We have a very dedicated number of staff, a committed board
and a great group of Coaches. Together we can do this.
Many thanks for your loyal support and tireless effort to try and
make our club the best. I would like to thank our Administration
Manager Amelia for her great support and for her professional
approach to all of her duties. Amelia has a great rapport with
our members and is a great asset to our football club. We wish
Kirsty, now she has left the football club all the best in her future
employment and welcome her replacement Jess Persichillo.
As the club’s President I have enjoyed my role and realize I also
need to improve along with everyone else.
Rob Taylor
I would also like to thank my wife Sue for allowing me the time to
do this role and for coming along and enjoying the club as I do.

2010
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT
Members of the South Fremantle Football Cub, on behalf of the
Board of Directors, I have much pleasure in presenting for your
adoption the club’s 111th Annual Report.
Well we have certainly gone from
chocolates in 2009 to boiled lollies in 2010
across the board in all grades in what was a
disappointing football season. Nevertheless
some positives emerge which relate to the
number of outstanding juniors who have
now had a taste of senior football.
No doubt the AFL talent scouts were busy
during the year watching the likes of Myles
Bolger, Matthew Jones, Shane Kersten,
Ben Newton, Warrick Andreoli and last
year’s Colts medallist Jarrod Parry in action
which may be a forerunner of many being
drafted in latter years.
During the year, Brandon Matera made the
journey to play with the Gold Coast and
acquitted himself very well as did Ashton
Hams and Callum Wilson with the West
Coast Eagles. Ashton in particular finished
off the season in great style by being
judged best on field for his side against
Geelong at Skilled Stadium.
Last year I reported that the board was
looking at enlarging and refurbishing the
club kitchen. This project was only partially
completed due to ongoing talks with our
co-tenants the Fremantle Football Club
over a master plan for the Fremantle Oval
precinct.
Over the ensuing months we the board
and you the members will be given the
opportunity to have input into any further
developments at the oval and we will be
in a position to stall the proposed plans if
we believe it is not in the best interests of
the club.
We will communicate our progress or lack
off through the club’s normal channels and
through the clubs weekly online “Bulldogs
Banter”. Please provide the club office
with your email address if you haven’t
already done so.
The board continues to be capably led by
chairman and President Haydn Raitt.
Special Awards
Two outstanding contributors to the board
Terry Dean and Santo Merenda resigned
at the 2009 Annual General Meeting to
be replaced by former club captain Brad
Collard and executive of Lion Nathan,
Frank Arangio. Unfortunately Frank’s time
on the board was short lived due to his
transfer in employment to Sydney.
The Clive Lewington Medal for our best
player in the Foundation Day Derby was
presented to Hughes Medallist, Nathan
Phillips.
Administration Manager, Amelia Dabrowski
ran a very tight ship once again and was
ably assisted by Kirsty McGuire before being
replaced in August by Jessica Persichillo.
The Charlie Tyson (Big Boots) Medal for
the best player in the annual game against
Subiaco was won this year by dual Hughes
Medallist, Kris Miller.
The football department initially led by
Football Manager Jason Burton until
his departure in July will need to put
its shoulder to the wheel over the post
season to guarantee a more successful
on field outcome in 2011. We believe
with the reappointment of senior coach
John Dimmer ably assisted by our latest
addition to the football department
Brent Dawkins and the energetic player
development officer, Daniel Vidovich we
are on the right track to future glory in
2011 and beyond.
Best Player Awards
Congratulations to Nathan Phillips, Mark
Miller and Brendan Ah Chee for winning
Best and Fairest Medals for the League,
Reserves and Colts respectively.
The Strzelecki Group Indigenous Rising
Star Award was won by outstanding junior
Emmaunel Collard.
State Representatives
Toby McGrath, Sam Hunt and Andrew
McCarrey represented WA at Medibank
Stadium when WA was comprehensively
defeated by Victoria.
Life Membership
The Board has much pleasure in
recommending in 2010 that Joan Jones
and Greg Wootton be awarded Life
Membership.
Lifetime Membership
The following qualify for Lifetime
Membership in 2011 by virtue of
continuous 50 year membership: Arthur
Lee, Kevin Poller and Eugene Lynn.
Former player Archie McDonald has
qualified for Lifetime membership
beginning his league career in 1960 and
having played 66 league games.
First Year Players
Volunteers
In 2010 twelve players made their league
debut including Anthony Collica, Andrew
McCarrey, Mitch Carter, Thomas Motlop,
Dylan Bairstow, Ross Tungatalum, James
Klause, Blake Dunkfield, Jarrod Parry,
Shane Kersten, Daniel Easter and Matthew
Leece.
Every year the football club relies heavily
on volunteer support. This year three
qualify for their ten year service certificate.
Congratulations to Margaret Smith,
Peter Taylor-Thorpe and Steve McAuley
for completing a decade of meritorious
service.
6
Directors and Administration
South Fremantle Football Club 2010 Yearbook
Another significant off field appointment
in 2010 was functions manager Bob Lahiff
who has brought a wealth of experience to
this role. He has assembled an excellent bar
staff which is the envy of all WAFL clubs.
Congratulations to our district
development staff in Bradd Gardiner,
Louise McKenry, Robyn Elms and
Boyden Griffiths in another great year of
accomplishments at junior level and to
Steve McCarthy, the WAFL’s best and most
respected groundsman.
WA HALL OF FAME
This year we had great pleasure on
witnessing the induction of Sandover
Medallist Mark Bairstow. Conclusion
On reflection, though we performed poorly
in all grades in 2010, through astute planning
and hard work there is no reason why we
can’t be a serious contender in 2011.
Brian Ciccotosto
Chief Executive Officer
2010
BAR/FUNCTION MANAGER’S REPORT
The bar this year has been reasonably successful
from an operational point of view, but as in other
areas of the Club’s operations this year we have
incurred a lot of “unbudgeted” expenses – some
of our own making, and others in the areas of
increased charges and maintenance costs, etc.
At the beginning of my tenure as Bar Manager at the Club, I
considered - as a long time supporter – that the levels of customer
service in the bar needed improvement, and that became my
major focus as the 2010 football season came around. To do this,
I made some changes to the bar area itself - and to our methods
of operation – which resulted in some expenses to the Club which
were not originally budgeted for. A lot of these were “one offs”,
and set us up for smooth operating for the remainder of the year.
From the beginning of the season, staffing levels were also
increased – again to try and improve the general level of service to
our members and visitors on game day. While we were successful
in this aim -as evidenced by the amount of extremely positive
feedback we received about the appearance and attitude of our
bar staff – as the season progressed, we found the staff numbers
were too high on occasions. Due to the fact that home games
were few and far between in the early part of the season, the “fine
tuning” of staff numbers was an ongoing project until the last few
games in August.
We had a couple of “bonuses” during the year – those being the
Fremantle vs Geelong practice game in March, and the Foundation
Day Derby in June. Foundation Day in particular was a big event, as
we had two remote bar/function operations happening at the same
time as our Luncheon and normal bar facilities. While it provided
great revenue, it also required large numbers of staff at Public
Holiday rates, which proved to be another big “over budget”
expense.
The CEO and I have analysed our expenses this year, and have
started taking steps to reduce costs in areas that we can control.
We are also looking at ways to maximize our revenue potential
– particularly in the area of venue hire. The Club has been very
generous to its clientele in the past in this regard, and I believe that
we need to revisit our fees in the light of large increases in running
costs. The intended result is an improved profit margin next year.
Thanks to everybody who assisted us this year in one way or
another - the Past Players and Don Pasqua (Centurion Club) were a
pleasure to deal with, and Peter Taylor-Thorpe was always willing to
help out at any time.
In the areas of administration and planning, Brian and Amelia were
a great help to me with their experience, knowledge and support.
Thanks also to the bar staff, a lot of whom were new this year.
They learnt quickly, had a great work ethic, and genuinely enjoyed
working with each other and for the members. My “unofficial”
assistant manager Susie Bell – who came to work with us this year
– was outstanding, and established a great rapport with all our
regulars.
Finally, thanks to all you members who supported the Club this year
– both at the footy and in the bar – it’s a pleasure to work for you.

arrangements.
•We need to continue to seek new members and major
and minor sponsors.
but…
•Departments to submit action plans based on the Club’s

decision making.

compatible with the club’s ethos.
4. Continue to be a competitive force at all levels.
•Continue support of Warriors program.
•Employ Talent Development Officer.
•Maintain contact with AFL players so the SFFC is their
first choice when their AFL career is over.
5. Develop our Elite Talent to AFL Standard.
•Assess identified players in areas assessed at the AFL
draft camp.
•Establish football program targeted towards 16, 17, and18
year olds to increase draft opportunities.

2010, may have been a tough year on the field due to many

2009
COLTS REPORT
2010 was a very special year for the South Fremantle Colts.
Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the absolute commitment and
passion the players have displayed over the course of a season.
I must make a special mention to Colin Griffiths Jnr for his
enormous effort as head water boy for the 2010 season. Always
smiling, Colin is a fine young man who always lifted the spirits of
the group.
Every player represented the South Fremantle Football Club with
upmost distinction in training, games and off-field commitments
and I have no doubt many of these young men will continue their
outstanding involvement with the Bulldogs.
I would like to thank all the parents who have supported the
program and given me positive feedback through the journey, for
a first-year coach I sincerely appreciate you help.
Colts football is a development program and as a coach, my
personal ambition, is to develop fine young men and I think we
have achieved that.
Thanks to John Dimmer and Garry Fuller for their mentorship
throughout the season, to have two senior premiership coaches in
your corner is an incredible privilege to a young WAFL coach and
I appreciate your efforts.
We played a total of 61 players and provided opportunities to
many young men in our metro and country zones and from the
Warriors Academy.
12 players played made a successful transition into senior football
playing a handful of reserves games late in the season, and Shane
Kersten graduated to league football.
I would like to congratulate the seven players who were selected
in the WA State 18s, the highest representation from any of the
WAFL clubs, a credit to South Fremantle, the coaching staff and
the players involved.
The 2010 season started with a bang as our full strength colts
team defeated East Perth (home), reigning premiers Claremont
(away) and Perth (home) to be 5-3 after the first round of fixtures.
The next round saw many opportunities arise with the State
campaign and injuries change the make-up of the team. Many
players from the colts rookie list became regulars and we were
fortunate to have a plethora of players from the Warriors program
ready for colts football.
Finally, thanks to Pete Christie, a great football person, who
always provided support and friendship throughout the season.
I believe the South Fremantle Football Club is very fortunate to
have Pete as director of football.
In closing, I wish to thank the South Fremantle Football Club for
giving me the opportunity to coach; I have had one of my most
enjoyable years of football involvement and have learned more
about football clubs than ever before.
Unfortunately, I will not continue coaching in 2011 due to
increasing work commitments however I have no doubt the team
will be in very good shape and the lesson learned this year will
turn the tables in the next.
Good luck to all the boys, we have had a lot of laughs this season
and I hope you keep enjoying your football.
SIMON NIMMO
Colts Coach
Whilst we only won one more game for the season, there were
many outstanding efforts and performances against more
experienced opposition.
It was a tough way to learn about WAFL football but football is a
cruel, demanding game and I have no doubt this learning will pay
dividends in the coming seasons.
I would like to personally thank my coaching staff for their
diligence, professionalism and good nature this season.
Bruce Fraser, who has gone over and above in his role as assistant
coach this season, has guided me through some tough times this
season and I sincerely thank him for his contribution to the program.
Assistant coaches Daniel Vidovich, Daniel Gilmore and David
Daws all brought an intellect to the coaching panel, various
experiences and developed strong relationships with all the boys.

RESERVES REPORT
It’s at this point that I would usually single out many of the
individuals who have given invaluable service to the Reserves
group throughout the season. In this report, however, I would
simply like to extend my most sincere thanks to all of those
people who made a contribution to our 2010 campaign. There
are so many levels of involvement, each as important as any other,
and I would like you all to know that the players and I appreciate
your often thankless efforts. Congratulations to all of the award winners, particularly Mark
Miller and Tyler Hall, both of whom have beaten off setbacks to
play consistently good football over the season. The challenge
ahead for these guys, as it is for many of the young Reserves
squad, is to establish themselves as regular League players next
season, through hard work and persistence.
I would like to confirm that I am standing down from the position
of Reserves Coach after five extremely rewarding seasons. There
have been many highlights and many challenges, and I would
like to particularly thank John, Terry and Haydn for their ongoing

HA
Although we were not successful enough on the field to take
part in the finals this year, I have been immensely satisfied with
the level of dedication and improvement within the group. We
played 62 players in the Reserves team throughout 2010 – surely
a “world record” - and those who were promoted to the League
team were keen and confident about making a real impact at the
higher level. Sometimes success should not be measured purely
by premiership points, and I strongly believe that this season is
one of those cases. The validity of my beliefs will be tested next
season because I expect the group to maintain their level of
improvement and surge back into the finals. Anything less would
prove my confidence in the group to be unfounded, but I’m
prepared to back them in!
GARRY FULLER
Reserves Coach
NG
In our last three matches we fielded a team containing ten or
more Colts-aged players, all of whom acquitted themselves
well and enjoyed the experience. These players were given
the opportunity to train with the senior squad over the last 4-6
weeks of the season and the feedback from them has been very
positive in terms of growing their confidence and increasing their
awareness about the standards expected within the senior group.
In closing, the adage that ‘the harder you work, the luckier you
get’ certainly does not apply to our group of players. During
2010 they worked as hard to improve as any group I have been
involved with, and I am sure they will continue to do so. What they
are collectively due is an upturn in the luck needed to maintain
their best efforts on the field. That said, there is no substitute for
honest, hard working players, and I have no doubt that it will be
a very determined group that turns out for preseason training in
early November. I wish them every success.
STAR

I
In defending their 2009 premiership, the 2010 Reserves team
was again a highly competitive unit. After a slow start to the
season the team settled into some consistent football and we had
worked our way into a top three position. But, as the season wore
on and we were forced to make large numbers of changes to the
team week after week, the odds became insurmountable and
we slipped out of the finals race. At no stage did the Reserves
surrender meekly in a contest, it was more a case of our team
being slightly behind in their physical development and game
experience to challenge the top sides late in the season.
support throughout my tenure. The club has provided me with the
opportunity to continually develop my coaching skills, under one
of the all time greats of the WAFL and surrounded by people of
real quality. More importantly, the club has provided me with the
support of another “family” throughout a very challenging time
in my personal life. I will forever be indebted to you all for that. I
am looking forward to taking on another coaching/mentoring role
within the club in 2011 in support of our developing talent.

Being a successful football club – at any level – requires an
enormous amount of organisation and effort, as well as a healthy
slice of good fortune. Just as in any match there are pivotal
moments that can ultimately determine the course of the game,
so there are circumstances and events within a club that greatly
affect the ongoing success of the playing group. During the
2010 season the South Fremantle Football Club was tested on
many fronts, from front office issues and coaching panel changes
through to player retirements and an ever mounting injury list, all
of which played a part in shaping our season.

2010
LEAGUE REPORT
Twelve months is a long time in football. This time last year I was
writing about the great success we had had at both league and
reserves level, twelve months on and we failed to make the finals
in either grade. How can this happen in such a relatively short
time?
There is no doubt that injuries certainly took their toll on the
team. Key players were struck down with serious injuries from
the first game of the season and things did not improve from
that point in time. By the end of the season we had three knee
reconstructions, two serious ankle injuries, two other knee
complaints and a series of soft tissue ailments. This culminated
in twenty five players from the senior squad being unable to be
selected for the last game of the season.
I also feel that we had some players who were suffering from
football fatigue. This fatigue can build up over the years and can
be a product of carrying injuries, being delisted from AFL squads
or not being drafted when expectations were high that they may
well be selected for an AFL list. These factors as well as coming
off a premiership and the clubs most successful season since the
1950’s culminated in a number of players playing below their true
capabilities.
There is, however, no doubt that the season has been an
extremely productive one in terms of development. Forty two
players represented the club at league level of which twelve were
first game players, sixty four played reserves football of which a
large number were promoted from the colts. This exposure to
higher level football will stand the players in good stead for the
future.
It is also pleasing to note that individuals who were in and out of
the team last year cemented their place in the team and finished
high in the fairest and best awards. This is a great reward for
their perseverance and commitment. In particular I would like to
congratulate Nathan Phillips for his effort in winning the Fairest
and Best Award even though he was struck down with a knee
reconstruction and missed a number of games towards the end
of the season. Ashton Hams second placing was also reward for a
terrific year which saw him consolidate his place in the West Coast
Eagles team and because of his efforts we may see even less of
him in 2011. Adam Guglielmana’s efforts in taking out third place
is a tremendous story and example to all players of what can be
achieved through a consistent effort and desire to want to be the
best you can be. With this approach I’m sure Adam will improve
even further and become an elite mid-fielder in the competition.
The challenge for the younger players and those who have now
played a significant number of games is to become dominant
WAFL players, not just players who make up the numbers, but
players who can lead the club to a finals campaign and hopefully a
premiership. This takes continual improvement which comes from
a dedicated approach to all aspects of the game, anything less
and there will be no individual improvement and no change in the
position of the team.
Whilst 2010 did not bring the results we were after we still had
some great work being done behind the scenes and in this regard
I would like to thank a number of people.
Firstly to Tom Bottrell for his work with the leadership group
which this year included some new faces in Corry Amato, Kyle
Hams and Toby Bairstow along with Craig White, captain Toby
McGrath, vice-captain Jaymie Graham and deputy-vice captain
Sam Hunt. Their continual development will stand them in good
stead not just in football but in life in general. I would particularly
like to single out Toby McGrath for special mention. Toby
announced that he would stand down from the captaincy at the
end of 2010. He has had a highly decorated career to date and
can now put his efforts into returning to top form for next season
and helping us climb up the ladder and help someone else at the
club become a premiership captain like him.
I would also like to thank Tony Mollica and Carl Micale for their
work around the club and particularly with the league team. Both
of these gentlemen are great individuals who have a big impact
on the senior squad. To Sandy Cuccovia and John Jones in the
property room (with the occasional guest appearance of Ron
Porter) kept the property room buzzing all year. To our medical
staff headed up by Merv Lockhart and physio Greg Wootton
well done in what was one of the busiest years on record in the
medical rooms
To the coaching staff, well done in a difficult year. The efforts
of Tony Walters, Neil Mildenhall, Andy Stone, reserves coach
Garry Fuller and assistant Nigel Hamilton along with fitness staff
James Bridle and Cas Gabriels were just as dedicated this year
as last. The efforts of our runners, particularly Les Olivieri (who
often ran for the reserves and league on the same day), are to be
commended as well.
It is also important to note the work of departed Football
Manager Jason Burton. Jason brought a considerable amount
of expertise to the league and reserves teams, particularly
through the application of video editing and statistical analysis
that was vital for the feedback given to players. This element
of player development can never be underestimated and was
a real strength of Jason’s. Whilst Jason left during the year I
look forward to working with our new Football Manager, Brent
Dawkins, who brings to the club a great deal of experience from
the AFL system and a real knowledge of player development
protocols, this augurs well for the future. Welcome Brent.
To all the other members of the South Fremantle staff both paid
and volunteers, thank you for your efforts. Hopefully we can
reward you next year with a climb up the premiership ladder.
Finally, I would like to thank our Board of Directors. Without
their commitment we would not be the great club that we are.
In particular, I would like to publically thank them for appointing
me as the league coach for the next three years. This show of
faith gives stability to the coaching structure and a sufficiently
long enough time frame to develop the young players mentioned
earlier to the level required to be successful.
2011 is not far away. The challenge for the whole club is
to improve in all areas so that we can move higher up the
premiership ladder. The playing group have a major role to play
in this. Without a dedicated approach, starting in November,
success will not be achieved. It is up to each individual to set
their goals high and work hard to achieve them, sometimes in the
face of difficulties. The rewards that the ultimate success brings
is obvious, you just have to look at the players who have tasted
premiership success at all levels at the end of 2010 to understand
the feeling it brings. No one gives you success you have to go
and earn it.

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT OFFICER REPORT
I would like to start off saying, a
big thank you the club for giving
me the opportunity to be a part
of the South Fremantle Football
Club in 2010. Starting a new job
in an industry and at a club that
I love, was a dream come true
for me. As I am still learning new
different ideas each day, I enjoy
the challenges this job poses
every day.
16’s Development Squad
The 16’s Warriors development program
started off with a new coach on board,
Jason Ireland. He took over the reigns
as head coach at the beginning of
January, with a very impressive coaching
background coaching through our district
and being a head coach for 14’s and 15’s
development squads over the past few
years.
With Jason’s experience and help from
assistant coaches in Peter Robinson and
Sam Saffioti the boys were exposed to
quality coaching which would help them
through the WAFL carnival as well as back
into the community levels.
Following the WAFL 16’s carnival, Brendan
Chen was awarded the Jim Hurst medal
for best player in the carnival. We also
had 3 players; Sean Lynch, Mason Shaw
and Adam Carter represent the State
16’s side in Sydney. Jayden D’Vauz was
selected to travel to South Africa by the
AFL Indigenous program which took part
in March this year.
In July the 16’s travelled to Melbourne,
which included 38 players and eight
support staff, which made up of the Player
Development Officer, Warriors Chairman,
Coaching staff and medical staff.
The tour is an excellent way to expose the
players to different levels of competition.
We undertook tours of AFL clubs, the
MCG, viewed 3 AFL matches at the MCG
and Etihad Stadium and were entertained
by guest speakers which included South
Fremantle great Brad Hardie. This year
they were also lucky enough to have past
players of the club and current players of
the Essendon Football club, Leroy Jetta
and Mark Williams speak to the boys while
on our Tour of Windy Hill.
26
The development squad had two games
against St Monica’s and Xavier College
while on tour.
With those games all boys showed great
physicality to match the Vic’s at their
own game winning the two games quite
comfortably. It also gave us an indication
which boys can take their football to the
next level and which individuals require
work in certain areas of their game.
Jayden D’Vauz, Emmanuel Collard and
Sam Rundle were rewarded with their
excellent performances on tour with going
into the change rooms after the Geelong,
Hawthorn game. Along with the PDO and
coaches they were lucky enough to meet
and have photos with the likes of Buddy
Franklin, Cyril Rioli, Garry Ablett, Joel
Selwood and Paul Chapman.
Our travelling umpire Tim Howard, who
was rewarded with the trip to Melbourne
by being the districts Junior umpire of the
year, had an experience of a life time. Tim
was lucky enough to be taken through
the umpires change rooms before the
Essendon and Melbourne game at the
MCG, and then was given the opportunity
to bounce the football in the middle of the
MCG in front of 40000 people.
After the tour some players were asked
to train with the colts side, and most were
lucky enough to make their debut with the
colts which will put them in good stead
for next year. Those players were Mason
Shaw, Cody Spanjers, Sean Lynch, Sam
Rundle, Jayden D’Vauz, Adam Carter, Dale
Hamilton, Brendan Verrier and Kallum
Mazengard.
14/15’s Development Squads
The 14/15’s carnival consisted of 4 teams
of thirty players from each WAFL club,
which play over the October school
holidays.
With these games we get a chance to
develop these young players in different
field positions to help progress their
football for the next year.
Our coaches for this year were; Sam
Saffioti, Darrin Bryden, Chris Athanassiou
and Jason Ireland. Each team consisting
of two assistant coaches and a
team manager. All groups are to be
congratulated for their time and effort
they have put in throughout the carnival.
Congratulation goes out to Sheldon Taylor,
South Fremantle Football Club 2010 Yearbook
Tim Stewart, Thomas Vandeleur, Jake
Friday, Ben Sokol and Marcus Jennings
who were selected into the State 15’s
school boy squad. A special mention goes
to Sheldon Taylor who was selected into
the All Australian side after the carnival.
UGS / Gascoyne
With a WAFL game being held in Wagin
this year, it was a good chance to show
off talent from our UGS Rams side and a
combined 15’s Warriors side who played
a curtain raiser before the league game
between South Fremantle and Claremont.
The UGS Rams represented South
Fremantle for country week in July, taking
on other WAFL regional zoned squads
from Claremont, Perth and East Fremantle.
A big thank you goes out to SFFC District
Officer Lou McKenry who managed the
squad over the 3 days, and thank you
to Rod Nicholson (Head Coach) and his
dedicated support staff and team on a
wonderful job making the UGS Rams a
successful program.
During the year we travelled to Carnarvon
and Exmouth to conduct schools clinics, a
Level 1 coaching course and view matches
including the Grand Final. The trip is a
chance to promote the SFFC and identify
future talent for the development squads
and colts system.
In October the Gascoyne put a under 16’s
side together to travel to Wickham to
represent South Fremantle in the North
West Junior Football Talent Carnival. Next
year the Gascoyne is looking to set up a
development squad like the UGS Rams,
which will help kids develop their skill and
knowledge of Football.
This year there were 4 players who made
their debut playing colts football while
still playing for their regional club. Haiden
Schloithe (Katanning FC), Sam Fortini
(Wickepin FC), Bryce McCallum (Narrogin
FC) and Jaxon Forbes (Ramblers FC) made
their debut with the colts side this year,
and we are looking forward to seeing
more of them next year.
In Conclusion
I would like to finish by saying a big thank
you to all volunteers who put their time
and effort into the program. Without
your help the program would not be able
to run as smoothly as it has. Also to the
sponsors of our program, Woolworths,

DISTRICT DEVELOPMENT REPORT
This is my 8th year writing a report for the SFFC yearbook and I
think it is my responsibility to change it up a little and try something
different rather than the same old reporting style from years past.
What I will present is a SWOT analysis of the District in 2010 which
will give members an insight into the workings of the District, the
broadness of our business and the challenges we tackle head on.
Review of 2010 as follows:
Strengths
• 1
7 members made up the SF District
Football Development Council which
is the strongest it has been since its
inception in 2003 and again Chaired by
Mr Rob Taylor.
• R
obyn Elms appointed as the new
Junior Competition Administrator,
which proved to be a remarkable
success with the role supporting all
junior clubs and competition.
• L ou McKenry worked very hard again
in building a full girls football pathway
with close to 200 girls involved from
5 through to 15 years all participating
in training sessions and games over 6
weeks or longer. Girls Auskick Centres
based out of Armadale and Atwell
were again very successful with over
120 girls involved.
• Indigenous Auskick was started at
the Champion Centre in the City of
Armadale with 75 registering with
the program. The 8 sessions involved
an AFL Game and a visit to the
Wirrapanda Foundation. Program was
aimed at Indigenous boys and girls
who are not already involved at a junior
football club.
• C
oaching Unit established for first time
where we had Jason Ireland oversee
Junior/Youth/Senior coordinators
deliver support, resources and
mentoring to our 167 junior and senior
coaches in the District. Jason Ireland
has done an exceptional job with our
coaches over the last couple of years
and he will be sorely missed as he
moves through the coaching pathway.
• 1
00% accreditation achieved by our
coaches which means we have well
educated and trained personnel
looking after our youth players.
• 2
7 new umpires recruited to the Junior
Competition, which helps provide the
88 umpires needed very weekend in
our junior competition. It is a credit
28
to the District Umpiring Manager
Mal Hooper that only 6 umpires have
moved on from last year which is well
down of the average dropout figure for
umpires across the state and shows the
training and mentoring environment
Mal is providing.
• 1
21 Junior and Senior Club Members
present at the Club Development
Workshop at the SFFC in May where
we covered everything from Volunteer
Development, Conflict Resolution, How
to Delegate and a number of other
subject which helped the clubs run
more efficiently.
• 1
8 Junior and Senior Canteen
Managers attended the Canteens
WA workshop on the same night
which showed how to provide a well
balanced and nutritional menu without
costing business.
• T
he AFL Quality Club program has
been rolled out which encourages
junior and senior clubs to provide
evidence that their club is
professionally run and by doing
so receiving accreditation for their
efforts. Congratulations must go to
North Fremantle AFC for receiving
Bronze and the Silver Accreditation,
first club in the District to receive
any accreditation. Jandakot Jets SFC
and Fremantle Hawks JFC have also
received Bronze.
• D
istrict Council provided 2 Leadership
sessions this year to assist executive
members of our junior and senior
clubs to become pro-active leaders at
their club. Paul Tonich was exceptional
and very well received by the 73 in
attendance and Bruce Willis later in
the year gave our members a slightly
different perspective on Leadership
and how it related to his defence force
experiences.
• B
oyden Griffiths our Development
Trainee delivered a quality schools
program this year and with the help
South Fremantle Football Club 2010 Yearbook
of Toby Bairstow and Jamie Eggers
delivered to 28,000 students over the
first 2 terms of this year. Outstanding
result and as this is core business for
our Council we are very proud of the
fact that our schools program has been
maintained as such a high level.
• O
ur brand new club in Hammond Park
JFC has doubled in growth over the
last 2 years and is looking to continue
its roll out into the modified rules
competition next year with a possible
3 sides. Auskick numbers are now at
67 which is remarkable effort for such a
young club.
• T
he District has been working very
hard with our clubs over the last 5
years to establish and build strong
working relationships with Local and
State Government Departments to
ensure Football is at the forefront of
minds when developing new facilities
and upgrading old ones. This year we
saw some movement on some key
decisions and these were as follows:
• K
winana Knights JFC move into new
$4 million facility in Orelia, called the
Fiona Harris Pavilion
• F
remantle Hawks receive funding for
lighting at Dick Lawrence which will
provide 50 Lux for training purposes
• F
remantle Hawks receive $500K to
upgrade current facility, which will
give the club much needed space for
change rooms, canteen and functions.
• C
ockburn Lakes receive $300K
to upgrade facility, which is an
outstanding result for the District
because it gives our Senior Club
benefit as well as District umpires who
train there every Wednesday during
the season
• S
outh Coogee JFC receive funding t o
upgrade facility, amount to be clarified
• H
ammond Park facility funding fast
tracked to 2012 because of better than
expected growth
Weaknesses
• C
ommunication structures; too many
stakeholders are not receiving District
information due to deficient structures.
• D
isadvantaged areas; The District has
some areas of disadvantage which
results in boys and girls not having the
capacity to engage in football.
• O
ur recruitment vs. population rate
target for boys aged 5-15 years is
over 25%; Clubs in the District which
need assistance and support and are
well below this recruitment rate are
Armadale (9.6%), Cockburn (8.1%),
Lakes (10.2%) and Leda (9.3%).
• S
enior Football Engagement; 70% of
senior clubs are actively engaged and
working with the District, we want to
have 100%.
• T
ransition Rates from Junior to Senior
Football; We are still seeing too
many players drop out of football all
together after finishing juniors, we
need the District, JFC’s and SFC’s
working closer together to bridge the
gap between juniors and seniors.
Opportunities
• U
pgrade District website and ensure
we have personnel updating every
week with different articles and
information.
• D
evelop and email database for
all junior and senior coaches, team
managers and stakeholders to ensure
information sharing is consistent.
• P
rovide funding for disadvantaged
families in the District to participate
in structured football; District already
has funding proposal at the WAFC to
support this initiative.
• M
eet with all Senior Clubs to ensure
they have an Memorandum of
Understanding with their closest Junior
Club which enhances the pathway
from juniors to seniors and also ensure
they are at least at Bronze level of the
Quality Club Program.
most Local Government Councils as we
get less rainfall over the years and we
will find more and more sports forced
to rationalise facilities and multi-use.
• V
olunteer Overload; a number of
our junior clubs have had enormous
growth over the last 5 years and this
has placed increased pressure on our
quality volunteers. District needs to
keep upgrading its support for these
volunteers and ensure that they have
the tools to run their clubs as efficiently
as possible.
I would like to thank a number of people
for their contributions this year, they don’t
get thanked enough and most of them are
volunteers who have full time jobs and are
helping out in their spare time.
Firstly like to thank Lou, Robyn and
Boyden who have done a sensational
job this year. Lou looks after all our
participation, coaching, female and
umpiring segments which has seen
excellent results all round. Boyden has
been to more schools than you can
imagine and has completed a quality
program. Robyn in her first year as Junior
Competition Administrator has been
nothing short of brilliant, her support,
assistance and rapport with the clubs has
been first rate and she is a valuable asset
to the District.
To the District Council, all 17 members
have been active this year and I thank
all of you for contributing to the District,
ensuring we stay at the forefront of
development in the state.
Special mention to the in Rob Taylor,
Shane Harding, Dave Kenny and Sharon
Greengrass, it is always a pleasure working
with you, your dedication to your roles
is unprecedented and I for one am very
thankful I have volunteers of your calibre
on the team.
To our P&D panel who were new to role
this year and did an exceptional job in
keeping our reported players honest
in Peter Matier, Stephen Goodall, Gary
Gough, Murray Vitali and Sheryl Ward we
thank you.
To the SFFC in Amelia, Kirsty, Jess, Mike,
Bob, Steve, Vido, Cicco, Haydn and the
board for all their support and friendship –
Thank You!
To the South Fremantle Members, we are
building a base for the future which will
provide not only quality players to the
SFFC, but first class coaches, umpires,
volunteers, trainers, administrators,
support staff and many more members.
We need to further promote this pathway
and ensure we are giving our local talent
opportunities.
Bring on 2011!

Threats
• F
acility Development; Too many new

• W
ater Shortages; currently have issue
in Roleystone where the Senior Oval
