In 2013, The Magic House experienced a year full of game changers as we developed exhibits, programs and partnerships that transformed the Museum, benefitting the children and families we serve. The Magic House kicked off the season with Football!, a traveling exhibit that explored the science behind the sport. Inspired by this exhibit, the Museum’s Friends Committee hosted Friday Night Lights, our first fundraising gala held offsite--and at Rams Park! Thanks to our sponsors, donors and ticketholders, this event was truly a game changer for The Magic House, helping us surpass our goal and raise funds to provide free educational opportunities for disadvantaged children, families and schools. As you will see in these colorful pages, The Magic House made many moves to enhance the lives and learning of children in our community. We are grateful to the many individuals, corporations and foundations that made 2013 such an impactful year. It’s our turn to thank you for helping us fulfill our mission, and for being an important part of our team. Harvey N. Wallace 2013-2014 Chair Board of Directors EXHIBITS START FOOTBALL! The Magic House put on our game face for the opening of Football!, a nationally traveling exhibit that kicked off at the Museum in October. Sponsored by the St. Louis Rams, the exhibit tackled the math, history, science and technology behind the sport. Aspiring QBs got the chance to throw a spiral, race a running back, test a football’s flight in a wind tunnel and even check out a uniform from helmet to cleat. Football! fans celebrated the opening of the exhibit with the hometown team’s MVPs including the St. Louis Rams cheerleaders, mascot Rampage and Rams alumni players. More than 100,000 visitors rushed to play in Football! during its four-month showing at The Magic House. To celebrate the start of Football!, The Magic House’s Friends Committee hosted Friday Night Lights, a gala held far afield at Rams Park. More ER ANG . The Magic House unveiled another new exhibit in April: the Calming Corner. This unique venue provides a special space for visitors who need a little quiet time. Located on the lower level near the Emerson Education Center, the Calming Corner is the perfect private nook for nursing mothers and children with special needs— especially those on the autism spectrum—who could use a restful space away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the Museum. The Calming Corner houses a variety of comforting activities including cozy rocking chairs, sensory toys, a six-foot bubble tube and even a soothing sound machine. The Calming Corner was made possible by a group in our corner: the “It’s Our Region Fund” of the Regional Business Council. FARM FRESH PIZZA PARLOR The Magic House is always looking for fresh exhibit ideas and cooked one up with the new Farm Fresh Pizza Parlor in the Children’s Village, which opened in September. In addition to serving up slices, kids can learn about where pizza ingredients come from and can even see some of them sprouting in the new Pizza Garden located outside of the Education Center. This circular raised bed is sectioned off in separate wedges where favorite pizza toppings, including onions, tomatoes, basil and green peppers, grow. The Magic House celebrated the renovation of the Farm Fresh Pizza Parlor with a Fall Farm Festival, complete with handson agricultural projects, a mini farmers’ market, pizza samples and the chance to see live farm animals. The Farm Fresh Pizza Parlor and Fall Farm Festival were made possible by the Local County Farm Bureaus of Missouri and Illinois, who reached out to The Magic House to partner with us on this concept. In 2013, The Magic House took off and headed for a new destination: Lambert-St. Louis International Airport. The Museum made plans to install the St. Louis International Play Port, a 1,500-squarefoot exhibit with a transportation theme, at the entrance to Concourse C. Young travelers will be able to climb aboard a child-sized plane, a Metro train and even some automobiles, and explore a scaled-down air traffic control tower, airport screening area and car rental counter. The exhibit will demystify the airport experience for kids and provide them with an active place to play prior to flight. GER N A H unity EC GAM to a comm a nding rough Respo entified th ite. id s need dsourcing crow The journey to create the St. Louis International Play Port began early in 2013 when Rally St. Louis, a social media crowdsourcing platform, invited the public to imagine and fund new ideas to improve St. Louis. Citizens responded that a kid-friendly learning and play space at the airport would be just the ticket! With private donations generated through Rally St. Louis as well as generous contributions from Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Carr Lane Manufacturing Co., the St. Louis Convention & Visitors Commission, Bi-State Development Agency/Metro, and Jane and Dave Peacock, the St. Louis International Play Port is opening in May 2014. NEW BIZ ON THE BLOCK It was more than just fun and games in 2013—The Magic House meant business, too, thanks to a grant from MasterCard Worldwide. The financial services company provided priceless support to pilot New Biz on the Block, a field trip program for elementary students focused on entrepreneurship and financial literacy. The program is based in the Children’s Village, where miniature moguls work in teams to make business decisions as they develop, launch and promote an entrepreneurial venture. New Biz on the Block supports educational standards in economics, personal finance and social studies, and encourages the development of 21st-century learning skills including creativity, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving. Support from MasterCard Worldwide allowed more than 2,000 tycoons-in-training to participate in the field trip program during the 2012-2013 school year. HEAD START ON STEM The Museum’s littlest learners got a head start on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), thanks to a grant from The Boeing Company. The grant supported a yearlong collaboration with YWCA Head Start centers throughout St. Louis City and County. The program included free field trips to the Museum for students; STEM-related outreach programs in Head Start centers; staff development workshops for Head Start educators; and family nights at the Museum in partnership with SSM Cardinal Glennon Medical Center, when Head Start families joined in an evening of STEM activities with free transportation, admission, take-home materials, health information and exposure to STEM careers. More than 2,000 young children, along with their families and teachers, blossomed with these hands-on STEM activities. The mobile app leads visitors on a scavenger hunt through the exhibits while they create a personalized digital picture book on their own phones along the way. Users can add captions and adjust the pages to customize their family’s Museum experience. The mobile app can be downloaded at no cost through the iTunes Store and Google Play. The Magic House’s Education, Marketing and Technology Committees collaborated on its development. Generously made possible by Ron and Carmen Cameron, the mobile app is just one more tool to encourage parent and child interaction throughout the Museum. Thanks to a major federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, The Magic House is implementing a children’s health and wellness initiative designed to educate families about making positive lifestyle choices. The project is also increasing the Museum’s capacity to serve as a health and fitness resource in the St. Louis community, where childhood obesity is on the rise. With support from the grant, The Magic House hired a project director to serve as a community liaison; assembled a Health Advisory Committee comprised of physicians and public health professionals from hospitals, universities and community health organizations; and is creating a health-related educational outreach program with interactive tabletop exhibits. This grant will also expand our participation in the national children’s health agenda, Good to Grow!, an initiative of the Association of Children’s Museums to assist children’s museums in providing healthy choices for visitors. In conjunction with our health initiative, The Magic House is offering a slew of events and programs to pump kids up. One of these was the Worldwide Day of Play in September. From hula hoops to hopscotch, families joined in this giant play date sponsored by Nickelodeon that encourages families to get up, go out and play. Another partner in the event was Let’s Move!, a movement launched by First Lady Michelle Obama to end the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. The Magic House is proud to be an official Let’s Move! Museum. All the hustle and bustle didn’t stop there. Every month, The Magic House provides Fitness Fun Fridays sponsored by Centene Corporation. On the first Friday evening of every month, visitors try different physical pursuits, from ultimate Frisbee to basketball, and from kayaking to crossfit. Participants even get pedometers to track their steps around the Museum. It’s all part of The Magic House’s ongoing effort to get kids off on the right foot to start a lifetime of healthy habits. YOUNG PROFESSIONALS BOARD A new group of players passed go at The Magic House in 2013: the Young Professionals Board. These up-and-comers from area corporations support the Museum’s mission by raising funds and awareness for the Field Trip Scholarship Fund, which provides free learning experiences for children in need. The Young Professionals Board hosted a sold-out Magical Night of Trivia in March; rolled out a food truck event, A Taste of Magic, in May; and rooted for the Rams and Cardinals at a Monday Night Watch Party at Kirkwood’s Buffalo Wild Wings in October. These events were a win-win for the Museum, raising more than $12,000 and establishing the next generation of leaders. GREAT FRIEND TO KIDS AWARD The Magic House paid tribute to the ultimate team player in November when we presented the Great Friend to Kids Award to Bill Canfield. A longtime leader at the Museum, Bill was Board Chair during the 2009 capital campaign that doubled the size of the facility, and now serves on the President’s Council and co-chairs the Endowment Committee to secure The Magic House’s future. Bill’s dedication is evident throughout the Museum, from the mosaic hopscotch patio in our front yard to the model train that pulls into Canfield Station daily.
