Hopefully Yours
WHAT? The construction of a brand new Hopefully Yours Store, estimated cost is
1.6 million
WHERE? 617 Jefferson Street in downtown Burlington, Iowa
WHY? Currently we operate in a rented space. Our operation has outgrown its
present location. Our store is a destination business and draws shoppers to the
downtown area, including shoppers from nearby communities. Hopefully Yours
provides training and employment for persons with disabilities.
WHEN? The time is now! To date $1.4 million has been secured.
HOW CAN I (WE) HELP? Gifts and pledges in any amount can be made for
the Hopefully Yours Building Fund, payable to either the Hope Haven Foundation
Building Fund or through the Des Moines County Community Foundation
Endowment Fund.
A plaque will be placed in the new store with the following giving levels:
Silver Partner: $1,000 - $4,000 Bronze Partner: $5,000 - $10,000
Platinum Partner: $11,000 - $25,000 Gold Partner: $50,000 plus

Randy Caston
Let’s celebrate the life of Randy Caston by remembering how he, himself, enjoyed
the simple things in life. You could always get a smile and a big thank you from
Randy by giving him a small gift or stuffed animal. He enjoyed family bingo parties
where the prizes were often silly and just plain fun. Randy’s smile and laughter made
the world a better place. Randy’s struggles taught many of us the true art of patience
and compassion. When we think of him now, let’s remember the times of good cheer
with aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers
and his mom and dad. Let’s remember how he loved animals, arts and crafts, going
on vacation, and having visitors. Let’s remember that he was happy even on his last day, and that he touched
the hearts of his supervisors and friends at Hope Haven and caregivers at Danville Care Center. Randy and his
big smile will be in our hearts forever.

THE GUGELER GROUP HOME
Gugeler Group Home had a party, complete with pizza and pop from Happy
Joe’s and a Hello Kitty cake to say goodbye to our longtime friend, Lucia Lietsch.
She will be leaving us to move into Burlington Care Center where she will surely
make as many friends and light up as many lives there as she has here at
Gugeler. She has touched all of our hearts and will be missed greatly, but we
wish her much happiness in her new adventure and we will visit her soon!
Lucia’s Dream
Due to recent illness, my beautiful Aunt Lucia Lietsch will be leaving her life at
Hope Haven for a higher level of care. I would like to send a heartfelt thank you
to Gugeler staff for their love and care these past 14 years. I would also like to
thank the work services and day program staff and the job coaches who gave
her life meaning.
Lucia was born at a time when it was thought the way to serve the best interest
of a person with disabilities was to keep them “safe” at home. My dear
grandmother did just that. Lucia grew up very loved and very protected. She
watched the world from her front porch and dreamed of a “life with opportunity
and well-being”. When Lucia’s mother passed, her sister was wise enough to
explore independent living arrangements for her. Lucia moved into Gugeler Group Home, and her adult life
began. She was thrilled to have her first job, friends and her own home separate from family. Most of us are
dreaming of retirement at this age, and she was just beginning her life!
When I spoke to Lucia, she always responded she did not need anything and was very happy. The Gugeler
staff under the direction of Kim Haigh provided her a wonderful life, full of unconditional love, fun activities and
quality care. Our family never had to worry if Lucia was safe and happy. What a gift that was to all of us.
My hope is this inspires all staff at Hope Haven to be passionate about your jobs and know you make a
difference. Lucia’s dream will continue to live on through others.

NORRGARD RESIDENTS IN 5K RUN/WALK
Three of our Norrgard residents (Marvin R., Tisha A., and
Sarah F.) along with three staff (Elizabeth K., Amber B.,
and Brittni M.) after the residents participated in their first
5k run/walk. The Running Wild event was held at the Port
Louisa refuge outside of Wapello, IA, and proceeds from
the run benefit conservation efforts in and around Louisa
County. The group is pictured with a bird feeder that was
won by their site manager for winning her age division in
the 5k run. Residents have been participating in a fitness
program at their home, working out with staff and on their
own as part of our “FIT” program (Friends in Training).
SCOUT TROOP 15
Scout Troop 15 would love to have new members!
They meet every Tuesday at 6:30 at the Cullen
Center,1905 Douglas Avenue, Burlington. We have
loads of fun and these are some of the things we do,
to name a few:
• Summer camp at Camp Eastman
• Youth and Adult Leadership
• SCC games
• Bees games

CONGRATS BOBBY!
Robert “Bobby” Sell celebrated his 20th year
working at Doran And Ward Printing Company
in October. Staff had a small reception at work
with cake and gifts. Bobby also had a collage of
pictures on display of his many years at Doran
and Ward. Congrats Bobby, we are so proud
of you.

got my art ability from both of my parents. I want to keep doing

school for art and get an art degree and become an art teacher
for special needs kids. I really enjoy drawing the picture of the

Tax Deductible Contributions
As you consider your year-end tax planning,
we hope you will include us in your
tax-deductible charitable contributions.
We would like to thank Mr. Joe Cochran, CPA,
of CPA Associates PC for his thoughtfulness
in assisting with this article for Hope Haven.
In the past several years we have seen the largest tax cuts ever in history. This is great for the majority of the citizens,
but what about the handicapped and less fortunate, many of whom are clients at Hope Haven Area Development Center
Corporation? Many of the programs previously supported by the government are now seeing severe financial cutbacks.
Hope Haven supports these citizens and they need your continued support now.
The holiday season will soon be upon us. We at Hope Haven would appreciate it if you would kindly remember us both in
your prayers and in your financial support. As you consider your year-end tax planning, we hope you will include us in your
tax-deductible charitable contributions.
The tax laws intentionally encourage charitable contributions. By your charitable contribution in 2015, you will reduce your
federal and state income taxes, providing you itemize your deductions for the year 2015.
Example: If you are in the 33.98% tax bracket and claim itemized deductions on schedule A, if you make a $12,500 contribution,
the sum of your federal and state taxes will be $4,248 less. Thus, your actual contribution costs you only $8,252.
Many of us in our lifetime would like to be remembered by leaving something for future generations.
No finer gift could be made than a bequest in your estate plan for Hope Haven. Such a gift will not
only provide many happy memories of you for your family, friends, and individuals who have helped
at Hope Haven, it will also provide a tax savings in your estate.

A record of your contributions is maintained by personnel at Hope
Haven. Remember that to be tax deductible, all contributions of $250
or more must be documented by receipts, which include a statement
that no goods or services were received for the contributions, or details
of the value of all goods and services received. Contributions under
$250 must be documented by a canceled check or a receipt.
Another gift to consider is a charitable living trust of life income gifts.
With certificate of deposit rates at less than 1% and many stocks
paying even less, you may want to consider this type of gift. This
type of gift allows you to transfer the assets over to Hope Haven now,
but you continue receiving cash payments for your life. The amount
you will receive is agreed upon when you create the trust and will
remain constant, no matter what happens with the stock market and
interest rates. In addition, you will receive a charitable deduction for
the contribution.
Note that Congress could still enact additional tax benefits from
contributions that will apply in 2015. Please consult your income tax
advisor to learn about these.

Life Insurance is probably the most overlooked gift available in tax planning. Example: Mr. Adams owns a $ 10,000 policy,
with a cash value of $3,000. If this policy is transferred to Hope Haven as the owner and beneficiary, Mr. Adams will receive
a charitable contribution of $3,000. If he continues to pay the premiums after the gift, the premium payments will also be a
tax deduction.
Both Hope Haven Area Development Center Corporation and the Hope Haven Foundation are approved charitable 501(c)3
organizations by the Internal Revenue Service.
Please consult with your tax advisor and the staff at Hope Haven on how your dreams can be remembered.
