November2013VOICE_NCL_VOICE 2color 11/7/13 12:05 PM Page 1 Year-end Tax Tips to Maximize your Charitable Giving By Mike Kura – Note: Mike Kura is president of the Haven of Rest Board of Trustees. A s the year end approaches, now is a good time to consider ways in which you can use your resources to help others as well as receive tax savings. Charitable contributions that are given by December 31st may result in a tax deduction for the donor and, if structured properly, may also provide his or her family with income. Gift of Cash: If you itemize your tax deductions and give cash, you may deduct an amount up to 50% of your adjusted gross income. Gift of Highly Appreciated Stock: Shares of stock and mutual funds, which you have owned for at least one year and have increased in value, can be a tax-wise gift to Haven of Rest Ministries. By gifting the investment to Haven of Rest, you will avoid paying capital gains tax on its appreciation and receive a charitable deduction for the stock’s full market value. Charitable IRA Rollover: In 2013 IRA owners 70-1/2 and older are able to make an IRA distribution directly to a charity and not include it as income (note that no charitable deduction will be allowed for the gift). The rollover is valuable to those who would prefer their IRA to continue to experience tax-deferred growth but are instead required to take withdrawals to satisfy their required minimum distribution. Consider a planned giving strategy: It’s not too late to consider a strategy that would give you a tax break this year and provide valuable benefits your family could enjoy for years to come. If you would like to know more about how year-end giving can benefit both you and Haven of Rest, please call 330-535-1563. Any tax advice contained herein is of a general nature. You should seek specific tax advice from your tax professional before pursuing any idea contemplated herein. 11th Annual HELPING HUNGRY FAMILIES Campaign October 7–November 27, 2013 M arc’s stores once again has selected Haven of Rest Ministries as one of the beneficiaries of its 2013 “Helping Hungry Families” campaign. Ben Walker Director A s I write today, Thanksgiving holiday is just around the corner as we are preparing to serve hundreds of meals to the men, women, Rev. Jeffrey A. Kaiser and families who will be with us on that special day. Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls and butter, green beans, corn pudding, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie will be served to all. Volunteers will give of their time to help serve and interact with the guests at the Mission. Many of us are fortunate enough to share this special day with family and loved ones. It’s a time we gather around the dinner table and reflect and thank the Lord for each day. At Haven of Rest, we know our guests well enough to know those who have no family, who are hurting, struggling with addictions, or have mental or physical health problems. It can be a tough day for these men and women as they look at their lives and reflect. To them, the Mission is their family. In Matthew 25: 35-36 it says, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me. I was sick and you looked after me. I was in prison and you came to visit me.” Thank you for caring and making Thanksgiving special for those who are struggling in life. May your Thanksgiving Day be blessed. ✞ In Christ’s Christ s Name, (Executive Director Retired) Kenneth Walker R Rev. JJeffrey ff A A.
