August2013VOICE_NCL_VOICE 2color 8/12/13 5:00 PM Page 1 Summer Fun at the Mission Community S ummer is coming to an end and what a summer we have had at Haven of Rest! The weather has been almost perfect for our many outreach activities from the children’s swimming parties to the Mission’s Annual Community Picnic “where the park was full of excitement,” says Katrina Henry, special events coordinator. “We had over 550 guests and I’d like to think they were able to forget, for just a moment, the overwhelming problems they face day to day.” Another summer staple is the Mission’s annual Hope Sports Camp. Every year since 1992, 200 boys and girls have been given the opportunity to hoop it up and improve their skills. During the two weeks of camp, boys play basketball for one week and girls enhance their skills in basketball and volleyball, which was added in 2012. But more importantly, the camp is committed to enriching young lives. It focuses on things like honesty, integrity, hustle, desire and hard work. The highlight of this year’s camp is to hear that 38 boys and girls made a commitment to Jesus Christ during devotions, which are held each day. Summer is also time where homeless children staying at Harvest Home can have experiences that help them grow, learn and enjoy their days. Through Project Rise they are able to attend many field trips to places like Inventure Place, Amish Country, the zoo and many other fun activities. For a while, the children are able to put their past behind them, forget their fears and just be kids. ✞ PICNIC VOLUME 54 • NO.7 ON THE STREETS 4 VOICE • ➧ AUGUST 2013 H AV E N O F R E S T M I N I S T R I E S Serving God By Serving Others The Power of Surrender Today Scott has a restored relationship with God. He was living what would be called “the American dream,” but underneath that successful appearance was a daily struggle with alcohol. Scott had been drinking since high school and considered himself a functioning alcoholic. The full effect of his drinking would not hit home until years later during the economic recession. Scott lost his job and his drinking increased to the point where he put himself in rehab only to experience a few months of sobriety and the cycle would begin again. After several relapses, things started to unravel. He and his wife separated and he lived with a friend who eventually kicked him out as well. With nowhere else to turn he found himself in the men’s day room at Haven of Rest. While there someone approached Scott and asked if he would like to go to church that evening. Scott had grown up in the church, so he accepted the invitation even though he had walked away from the Lord during his college years. During church service that evening, Scott rededicated his life to Christ. “When the pastor started his sermon, it was directed straight at me,” says Scott. “The pastor was talking about how alcohol and drug addiction were deep-seated drug issues.” The message struck at Scott’s core, and he knew God directed that message to him. At the end of the sermon, the pastor offered a prayer of healing. Scott says to this day he has not had a compulsion to drink. Today Scott has a restored relationship with God and while he does not know his future plans after completing the program, he does know God will guide and direct him. Please keep Scott in prayer as he discerns the will of the Lord for his life. ✞ E-MAIL: [email protected] WWW.HAVENOFREST.ORG August2013VOICE_NCL_VOICE 2color 8/12/13 5:00 PM Page 2 From the Executive Director PUBLISHED BY HAVEN OF REST MINISTRIES I 175 E. Kaiser having no shepherd. Then saith unto his disciples, the harvest is truly plenteous, but the labourers are few.” Haven of Rest hosted a community picnic on June 26th at Grace Park. The Lord held off the rain to make this special event a great success. With 550 guests in attendance, it was a joy to see children, families and individuals enjoy a couple hours of festivity. Hotdogs, cotton candy, popcorn, snow cones, games, face painting, pony rides and air rides made it a fun and exciting event. Most of the guests in attendance were from the community and surrounding areas. A lot of them struggle day to day trying to make it. The Lord has granted Haven of Rest to hold this event for over 20 years. We look forward to this picnic each year along with the Mission volunteers and donors who come alongside in support. The picnic at Grace Park provides Haven of Rest an additional opportunity to share the love of God and to direct people to Jesus Christ, the true Shepherd. Thank you for being moved to compassion for the many who are as sheep having no shepherd. ✞ (Executive Director Retired) In Christ’s Name, Kenneth Walker TRUSTEES EMERITUS Forrest Crocker, M.D. Shirley Estes Charles Fisher Earl Kelvington Rev.
