Dec 19th IBM provides Allianz with data centres operation support The German headquartered Allianz, one of the World’s largest financial services and Insurance groups and IBM have concluded an agreement in Munich regarding support for the operation of Allianz's data centres, reported a Company press release. IBM will be acting as the global provider of IT operation services for Allianz in effect from April 1, 2014, supporting the transformation of the company's global IT infrastructure. Allianz currently has 140 data centres worldwide and plans to consolidate and reduce these to six data centres. The global partnership with IBM covers ITrelated infrastructure processes relating to technical operations. The aim is to create a global IT infrastructure that is robust in its ability to withstand natural catastrophes and disasters and that meets the very highest requirements in terms of quality and ease of use. The program also aims to further increase data security levels. Allianz expects to have completed the transfer to the new IT infrastructure and its operation in full by the end of 2017. Security a top data centre concern As increasing number of firms house critical systems with data centres, security will be their top concern during 2014, according to global IT security firm, McAfee. “Data centres are the nerve centre of an organisation making data centre security a top priority for most companies today,” US-based McAfee said in a report depicting mega trends that will dominate the security industry in India next year, reported Racers Republic. With the blurring of boundaries between physical, virtual and public/private cloud, organisations are on an evolutionary curve towards next-generation data centres, the report added. “Resultantly, they will face the reality of securing data that moves between server, storage, and networking resources (physical and virtual) of next-generation data centres,” it said. Jan 2nd Major applications will move to the cloud in 2014 Expect to see leading brand-name enterprise apps become more cloud-based in 2014 as cloud services do a better job of securely supporting hybrid cloud environments, according to Verizon Terremark in an interview with Light Reading. John Considine, CTO, Verizon Terremark, says the consumerisation of IT is gathering steam and putting greater pressure on IT departments to deliver more functionality and do so at lower cost, thus increasing the attractiveness of pay-as-you-go cloud-based solutions. At the same time, Considine says, cloud service providers such as Verizon are getting better at providing secure cloud connections and easier transitions to cloud services, as well as supporting hybrid cloud environments. These factors will combine to make 2014 a big year for cloud adoption, Considine says. He is among those telecom execs who have admitted that cloud adoption thus far has been slow, but believes it will still pick up steam, because the underlying trends will continue. The consumerisation of IT, for example, is not new, but it continues to exert an impact as more enterprise employees gain access to sophisticated tools, and expect to be able to use their smartphones and tablets at work. They expect to have the broader access to apps and data that they enjoy as consumers. Jan 2nd Dec 23rd 3 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 Click here to go back to contents page World IBM to invest US$1 billion in new Watson Group IBM has announced it will establish the IBM Watson Group, a new business unit dedicated to the development and commercialisation of cloud-delivered cognitive innovations. The move signifies a strategic shift by IBM to accelerate into the marketplace a new class of software, services and apps that think, improve by learning, and discover answers and insights to complex questions from massive amounts of Big Data, reported a Company press release. IBM will invest more than US$1 billion into the Watson Group, focusing on development and research and bringing cloud-delivered cognitive applications and services to market. This will include $IS100 million available for venture investments to support IBM’s recently launched ecosystem of start-ups and businesses that are building a new class of cognitive apps powered by Watson, in the IBM Watson Developers Cloud. According to technology research firm Gartner, Inc., smart machines will be the most disruptive change ever brought about by information technology, and can make people more effective, empowering them to do "the impossible." The IBM Watson Group will be led by Michael Rhodin, who most recently served as Senior Vice President, IBM Software Solutions Group, responsible for delivering industry-specific solutions in highgrowth areas such as Business Analytics, Smarter Commerce, Smarter Cities and Social Business. A major initiative for the IBM Watson Group will be to continue advancing its research and development to accelerate the delivery of cognitive innovations to organisations via the cloud. As part of this initiative IBM will engineer Watson to be deployed on Softlayer, the cloud computing infrastructure business recently acquired by IBM. Jan 10th IT spending to grow 3.1% in 2014 Data centre outage down 20% Global information technology spending is expected grow 3.1% in 2014 compared to 2013 to total US$3.8 trillion, according to research house Gartner. IT spending globally was flat in 2013, up just 0.4% from 2012, reported Data centres.com. A new report from Emerson Network Power 2013 State of the Data Centre – suggest that the number of complete outages are down 20% since 2011 but the financial cost of those outages rose by33% over the period, reported Data centres.com. Data centre systems spending are expected to grow 2.6%in 2014, but that tally is down from Gartner's previous forecast of 2.9%. This is because Storage and enterprise communications spending is expected to come in lower than expected. Gartner added that data centre build out plans are being reconsidered as CIOs look to cloud computing. The report found businesses average one outage per year. Sending on enterprise software is set to grow at 6.8% in 2014 with Customer relationship management applications and supply chain software at the forefront of this spending. Spending on devices (PCs, mobile phones and tablets) will grow 4.3% in 2014 following a 1.2% fall in 2013. Jan 6th Director of marketing and solutions, Russell Perry said the data centre was playing an increasingly critical role as we move into a digital world. “Technologies have pushed the world to move at a faster pace, and businesses must keep up to meet servicelevel agreements with their customers.” In addition, the report reveals one in every nine people in the world uses Facebook, nearly 28,000 photos are uploaded onto Instagram every minute, 25% of viewers drop off when the video they are watching buffers for more than five seconds and if the video buffers for more than 10 seconds, nearly 50% of viewers will be gone. Jan 22nd 4 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 Click here to go back to contents page World Increased dependency on data centres for mission-critical applications sustains global data centre UPS market Increasing dependency on data centres for mission-critical applications, is lending impetus to the global data centre uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) market. The improved investment landscape is further expanding the scope of the UPS market as organizations that withhold spending over the last few years and seeking solutions to increase energy efficiency, reported PR Newswire. New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Analysis of the Global Data centre Uninterruptible Power Supplies Market, finds that the market earned revenues of US$1.61 billion in 2013 and estimates this to reach US$2.34 billion in 2019 as a result of the demand for well-equipped data centres with fully functioning backup power. "The trend towards virtualization and cloud computing as well as the need for data availability on the go, is boosting the number of UPS installations," said Frost & Sullivan Energy & Environmental Research Analyst Anu Elizabeth Cherian. "Organizations are veering towards a new generation of UPS systems that complement the virtual server design and significantly raise the total power usage effectiveness of data centres." Jan 22nd Study predicts strong SMB data centre spending in 2014 IBM to open 15 data centres Global computing giant, IBM has announced plan to invest some US$1.2 billion to boost and expand its cloud footprint in the international market through a number of new data centres all across the globe, reported Data centres.com. The company announced that it expects to open 15 new “cloud centres” in London, Washington D.C., Hong Kong, Toronto, Japan, India, China, Canada, Mexico and Dallas, which will see its global portfolio of data centres rise 40 across 13 countries. The company stressed that it wants to ensure via this cloud centre expansion plan, that it has at least at least four data centres in what it considers major geographies – Europe, Latin America, Asia and the Americas. The company said it is also keen to expand and boost its presence into the Middle East and Africa by 2015. IBM believes that the global cloud market will grow to US$200 billion by 2020, so to deal with the continued rise in demand for cloud computing, these data centres will be home to the SoftLayer cloud platform in order to allow firms in numerous markets – from gaming to financial institutions – to host their tools, data and services in the cloud and to experience the benefits this offers. Dennis Quan, vice president of cloud services at IBM, told V3 that the financial backing for its cloud plans underlined the importance for Big Blue of carving out a strong space in this market. “This investment is about increasing our investment in cloud in response to demands from customers. By expanding our global cloud footprint we can do what it takes to provide enterprise-class cloud,” he said. Jan 17th 5 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 Worldwide spending on data centre services by small and medium businesses is expected to grow by over 18% in 2014, according to a study released by analyst firm Research and Markets, although solution providers and distributors say that figure is less than what they're actually seeing, as a growing number of SMBs are opting to offload data centre management tasks to third party service providers, reported CRN. Research and Markets said it based its growth prediction on the rapidly growing demand for infrastructure and facilities. Autotask CEO Mark Cattini told CRN he thinks Research and Markets' prediction isn't accurate given the rapid expansion of SMB cloud opportunities. "To be honest, I'm surprised the growth numbers were as low as they were," Cattini said in response to the survey numbers. "Nobody wants to own anything anymore. [That's] the whole managed services concept." Cattini thinks 50% growth next year would be a more accurate figure. He expects the growth to really take off in the next three to five years, as physical servers reach their end-of-life and organisations choose to replace them with cloud-based alternatives. Jan 2nd Click here to go back to contents page EMEA Microsoft invests in Dutch data centre Following yesterday’s news that the US IT giant, Microsoft has bought land for a new data centre in the town of Quincy in the US North West, media reports in Holland are suggesting that the company is set to invest some US$2 billion in a new facility in the Netherlands. According to local media sources including Automatisering Gids, the new facility will be located in Middenmeer in Northern Holland. Although an exact location has not been disclosed, Microsoft is said to have bought a 40 acre site and will build a 17.5 Megawatt facility which is expected to support between 150 and 200 jobs. UK Government breathes life back into UK’s essential data centre industry The UK Government has finally recognised the economic importance of the Data Centre sector – one of the few industries where UK plc has a world lead - by their inclusion for the first time ever in a Government announcement. Said Data Centre Alliance President and former Minister of Transport Steven Norris, “The Chancellor of the Exchequer finally recognised Data Centres in his Autumn Statement as the major industry and economic wealth creator that they are, by removing the punitive tax regime that had been making the UK non-competitive in this business and forcing companies to off-shore their data centres. “Britain is a world leader in the Data Centre industry and the Climate Change Levy had been wrongly applied to it because the Government, and indeed the public, were totally unaware of its existence! Something we at industry body the Data Centre Alliance (DCA) have been working hard this year to change. The Chancellor’s Autumn statement plus the winning of the first ever European Strategic Research funding for Data Centres now demonstrates that DCA has succeeded in bringing this previously unseen industry onto the Political agenda.” Norris went on to explain that the Data Centres are buildings full of computer servers that power things like Facebook, Twitter, E-mail, the Banks all big businesses. Airline booking systems, Air Traffic Control, the NHS, city traffic lights and in fact just about every part of our lives are controlled by these massive data centres. “The UK was one of the very first countries to develop Data Centres out of our worldclass telecommunications and mainframe computing industries,” Norris said, “and we were in serious risk of loosing what are effectively the UK’s only remaining ‘factories’.” We refer to them as ‘factories’ because they store and make information out of raw data. They are massive - often the size of five or six football pitches – and can consume as much electricity as a small city. “What the Government is now starting to understand is that it is essential to protect and grow one of the few industries where UK plc still has a world lead,” said Norris, “and we are delighted that DCA’s efforts in representing the industry to them have, in such a short period of time had such significant results.” Concluded the DCA’s Executive Director Simon Campbell-Whyte, , “We are delighted that the UK Government has now recognised the imperative to grow and support this sector. And, although as an organisation we represent the industry globally we believe that this is a major milestone in the success of UK plc and are proud that we were able to achieve this on behalf of our members.” “It is of course only a first step, and we are standing by to assist UK Government and Governments worldwide as they come to terms with understanding and supporting the digital factories that now power the global information economy.” Dec 17th 6 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 The plant will be located in the middle of the province’s horticulture industry and will be powered by energy created in the greenhouses. In addition, Microsoft has reportedly hired Mace Group from London as contractor on the project. Dec 24th Aegis Data opens Godalming data centre Aegis Data have unveiled its new data centres in the UK. Officially opened by the Rt. Honourable Jeremy Hunt MP for South West Surrey and Secretary of State for Health, Aegis One is a purpose built 30,000 sq ft, enterprise class Tier III data centre located near to the M25, reported Data centres.com. Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey said, “I was delighted to open the Aegis One Data Centre and support such an innovative business located within my constituency. Jan 15th Click here to go back to contents page EMEA Optimum predicts 2014 shift in data centre buying patterns The UK data centre owner and operator Optimum, has suggested that there will be a fundamental shift in data centre procurement processes in 2014. Based on a recent research report that the company commissioned, Optimum now expects “people” to become a priority when it comes to selecting a suitable data centre operator. ‘Panic Planning – Chaos in the Data Centre’ highlights the findings of interviews held with senior IT professionals representing large organisations (250+ employees) in the UK with direct responsibility for their company’s data centres. The results made for interesting reading. “There is most certainly a theme of frustration when we look at the perceived value that the operators claim they are adding,” said Terry Dempsey, Executive Director at Optimum. “Too many respondents (68%) said that operators were failing to deal effectively with day to day issues; for some in particular this happened a staggering 13 times in 12 months. As a result, we believe that this will drive forward a change in attitudes with regards to what are deemed to be the most important criteria during the procurement process - quality of staff based on their expertise in the sector will start to appear much higher up the agenda.” Apple to go Dutch? Local media sources are reporting that consumer electronics and software giant, Apple is set to build a new data centre in Eemshaven, seaport in the Groningen area of Holland reported Data centres.com. The area already boasts a large 10,000 sq m data centre, built in 2007, managed by TCN Data Hotels, and occupied by Google. This existing data centre gained planning consent in 2012 for another data centre on a 40 acre site and the Media sources including Dagblad van het Noorden, link Apple to this new site. Eemshaven is seen a favourable location for a number of reasons, including the fact that a major transatlantic fibre optic cable (between Europe and the U.S) comes ashore at this point and the availability of reliable energy sources. Dec 24th Optimum also referred back to research statistics recorded since spring 2011 which show that proactive consultancy levels have only improved marginally and that there is still substantial room for improvement. Just 37% of respondents in 2013 cited that their operator was proactive, for example, when it came to advising on PUE. Comparatively, this figure was 36% in spring 2011, but interestingly had gone down to 29% in autumn 2011. “Data centre outsourcing contracts might be signed with a longerterm vision in mind but it seems that frustrations with the standards of consultancy on offer often arise in the short term,” continued Dempsey. “The savvy data centre buyer is no longer just looking at price points. Today it is more about the bigger picture and the business benefits of the whole package - building a partnership based on a willingness to share knowledge. As an operator, if you can’t put highly experienced team members forward in order to plan strategically - and then regularly review - with your clients, you just won’t be able to compete effectively anymore.” Dec 17th London Data Exchange merges with Ping Networks Fast growing London-based data centre and network operator London Data Exchange– whose 500 plus rack facility is based in North West London - has announced the merger of London Data Exchange Limited and Ping Networks Limited to form the LDeX Group Limited, reported Datacentres.com. LDeX Group have acquired 100% of the share capital of both LDeX and Ping Networks to create a new brand that will focus on developing the core strengths of both entities in the areas of high quality colocation services and intelligent networks. Commenting on the merger, Rob Garbutt, CEO & Co-Founder of LDeX Group, said: “I am very excited about the creation of the LDeX Group and combining our product sets under one consistent brand. By combining our in-house talent, we are better placed to serve our growing customers’ needs going forward. Our ability to link people, places and clouds has been boosted significantly with the flexible service creation capability that the combined group can now offer to the market.” LDeX group welcomes Simon Chamberlain onto the board of directors as new CTO. Patrick Doyle (Co-founder of LDeX) will become COO of the new Group. The creation of the group gives further financial strength going forward and will enable LDeX group to better serve its’ existing customer base, onboard new clients and expand its’ data centre foot print and IP network across multiple regions. The company has opened an office in the centre of Glasgow and has already employed five team members and is now embarking upon further recruitment to accommodate growth. UKFast CEO, Lawrence Jones said "People have questioned such a move with the referendum less than a year away but, whether Scotland becomes independent or not, it will always be a huge part of global and British business. This is why we have chosen to expand North before even considering going South to London - we're moving up!" The technology firm's northern growth comes soon after the launch of Scotland's dedicated internet exchange point, IX Scotland -which will see connectivity in the country greatly boosted - and as plans to develop Scotland into a digital nation by 2020 continue to progress. Jones added: "As Scotland focuses more on its digital future and future-proofing its infrastructure, there is a clear gap in the market for us to help businesses in the country to grow. We want to join the market in Scotland to provide our enterprise-grade solutions for all levels of business. "We're levelling the playing field with products like our eCloud which gives businesses access to a £20m cloud infrastructure, including the highest level of hardware, software and support without the huge cost normally associated with hosting solutions of this calibre. Jones also revealed plans to build data centres and contribute to the infrastructure in Scotland to make it a more viable location for financial and legal firms. The opening of UKFast's Scottish office comes as the firm continues the £5m development of UKFast Campus - the firm's new HQ on the edge of Manchester's Science Park. The 50,000 sq ft office space is equipped with a gym, creche, steam room, chill out area with pool tables and games consoles, and kennels. Dec 24th Portsmouth University gets £2.25 million energy efficient data centre The University of Portsmouth has built a new energy efficient data centre worth £2.25 million. Opened at the end of 2013, the centre’s “cuttingedge design” gives the university full control of its data centre cooling plant, reported Energy Live New. Portsmouth’s new centre is projected to hit 1.14. That compares with a recent study by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory of data centres showing on average they have a PUE rating of 2.18. Air conditioning firm Airedale which helped design the cooling system said it saves energy because of “indirect” cooling air circulating in the room. It said this will deliver free cooling up to 95% of the year depending on air temperatures. James Holland, Network & Security Services Manager (Information Services) at the University of Portsmouth said: “This is an excellent facility that the University can rely upon to deliver world class academic support and research development”. Jan 21st 8 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 Click here to go back to contents page EMEA Node4 suggests that IT tops list of worries amongst SMEs in 2014 Small to medium sized organisations in the UK are optimistic about business prospects in 2014, according to independent research by data centre and communications company, Node4. The survey of 250 decision makers in companies between 50-500 employees, found that 1 in 5 have no concerns at all about 2014 and expect this year to be prosperous and successful, reported Data centres.com. Interestingly, worries about IT topped the list amongst those that have concerns about this year, ahead of generating enough business and workforce retention. 34% of those interviewed agreed that their existing IT infrastructure would not support business growth and that a lack of IT innovation would hold back success. The ability to generate enough orders to maintain survival in 2014 was cited by a third of SMEs and concerns about staff was mentioned by 18% as an issue for this year. “We are, at last, coming out of one of the worst recessions in living history. Over the past five years, SMEs have struggled to keep their head above water, fighting to keep their business afloat and profitable. But the tide is turning, the economy is looking up, businesses and consumers are buying again and as a result, SMEs are in a positive mood about 2014,” commented Paul Bryce, Business Development Director, Node4. “It did come as a surprise to find that IT concerns topped the list as the biggest hurdle that SMEs will face this year. To our mind, this underlines the important role that IT will play in helping SMEs prosper in a buoyant economy. IT has gone from being a static cost-centre to a dynamic business enabler that must support the organisation at every stage of the sales cycle, overall empowering the business to grow and succeed.” Jan 3rd Gulf Data Hub set to open new UAE data centre The UAE’s first carrier- and vendor-neutral data centre facility, Gulf Data Hub has said it will open a new data centre in January 2014. The Trust intends rolling out a ‘Bring Your Own Device’ and mobility strategy across the Trust over the coming months. Stephen Stewart, Assistant Director of Technology & Telecommunications, South Eastern HSC Trust said “Demand for IT services in the healthcare sector has grown exponentially in the past few years, but the simple fact is that clinical areas in hospitals are not designed to house data centres. We have centralised all server support for the Trust at the Ulster Hospital, which is undergoing a rebuild. Originally this included the provision of two new bricks-and mortar data centres but, instead of putting an expensive data centre in each of the new buildings, we have located two HP PODs next to them. From day one, we know that the HP PODs will deliver scalable capacity to meet our compute requirement for the next seven to ten years.” Jan 20th 9 GVA Connect – Datasource, Issue 119 – February 2014 EMEA Phoenix NAP expands European footprint with Evoswitch European data centre service provider, EvoSwitch, has announced that it has signed a multi-year contract with Phoenix NAP, a full service data centre, infrastructure-as-a-Service provider and primary network access point from Phoenix, Arizona, for the provision of colocation space in its Amsterdam data centre, a Company press release reported. “This expansion of our European operations is a major step in our ongoing initiatives to provide global services and we are thrilled to be working with EvoSwitch,” said Ian McClarty, President of Phoenix NAP. “The ample space and power of the facility enables us to keep growing in the coming years as our customers’ demand for hosting solutions within Europe expands. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), means that Google during ten years starting in early 2015 will buy all renewable electricity produced by the 29 turbines of the models Vestas V90, V100 and V112. Along with the wind turbine supply agreement, Eolus and Vestas have signed a ten-year full service agreement. Eolus will after commissioning operate and manage the facilities. Total installed capacity is 59 MW. Eolus financial strength is an important component of the deal since the contract is signed directly with Google as the buyer of the electricity. The long-term contract ensures that Eolus can offer investors an interesting investment opportunity in the Swedish market. “Our agreement with Google is a further endorsement of the potential of wind power in the Nordic countries said HansChristian Schulze, deputy CEO of Eolus. -We're looking forward to building our new wind farms over the year and helping Google stay ahead of its commitment to carbon neutrality.” The four wind farms are Skalleberg in Hjo municipality, Mungserod in Tanum municipality, Ramsnas in Laxa municipality and Alered in Falkenberg municipality. By bundling wind farms in different locations together into one deal, risk diversification and greater production reliability over time can be achieved. “We're always looking for ways to increase the amount of renewable energy we use said Francois Sterin, Director of Global Infrastructure at Google. -Long term power purchase agreements enable wind farm developers to add new generation capacity to the grid - which is good for the environment - but they also make great financial sense for companies like Google. The firm has grown aggressively to manage $15 billion of assets, becoming the fifth largest provider of these services. The core of Source’s business is in the European equity markets. “If our system went down even for a small amount of time, it could have a huge impact on the pricing of our products, and adversely impact customer retention,” confirms Michael John Lytle, Chief Development Officer for Source. In a highly competitive trading environment, Source’s success is dependent on the resilience and flexibility of its systems and website, which increasingly houses more complex content, including numerous live market feeds alongside extensive product information. The firm’s agile business model meant that partnering with a trusted managed service provider was the natural choice. However, with business critical functions on the line, choosing the right provider was crucial. Lytle continues: “We asked our financial peers “Who would you put into a process if you were considering getting these services from an external organisation?” Colt was recommended as an organisation that can scale in line with the business to support increasing volumes of transactions.” Colt’s Optimum services underpin Source’s systems and website. Following a nine month due diligence process and an extensive consultation, an integrated IT and networking service was implemented in two UK Colt data centres for business continuity. Two years on, the resilient and scalable solution continues to support Source’s core systems while ensuring uninterrupted availability of their content rich website. Colt Optimum is the name of the direct-to-enterprise portfolio across IT, Network and Communication Services. These services are differentiated by their unique combination of network reach, integrated technology, service management and commercial flexibility. They complement Colt Ceano, which is designed specifically for Colt’s indirect channel. Jan 17th Eircom plans €200m Dublin data centre The Irish telecommunication company. Jan 17th NSA scandal to impact US hosting A new independent survey of 300 UK and Canadian businesses, commissioned by web infrastructure and cloud hosting provider Peer 1 Hosting, reveals that 25% will move their company data outside of the U.S. due to NSA-related privacy and security concerns. Canadian companies are even more likely to relocate data than UK companies, with one in three saying they will move away from U.S. data centres. Despite this trend, the U.S. remains the most popular place for these companies to host data (5%) outside of their home countries, reported Data centres.com. Privacy concerns are growing after the NSA scandals and the “summer of Snowden,” with 82% of companies indicating that privacy laws are a top concern when choosing where to host their data. Further, 8% want to know exactly where their data is being hosted. The survey revealed that the top three concerns for UK and Canadian businesses when choosing a hosting provider are now security (96%), performance (94%) and reputation (87%). Nearly 70% of respondents agree they would sacrifice performance to ensure data sovereignty. Despite these new attitudes, organizations admit they are struggling to fully understand current data laws, with 60% agreeing they don’t know as much as they should about data security laws. Additionally, 44% feel that privacy and security laws confuse them. “With data privacy and security concerns top of mind after NSA, PRISM and other revelations around the world, businesses in the UK and Canada are taking real action,” said Robert Miggins, SVP business development, PEER 1 Hosting. “Many are moving data outside of the U.S., and even more are making security and privacy their top concerns when choosing where to host their company data.
