A child of Army and Air Force parents,
Mrs. Atkinson lived in 22 communities before settling in Harrisville with husband
Adam, who plays mandolin in the Atkinson Family band. She began lessons in
voice while a student at the Rome Free
Academy and was selected to sing in the
chorus at the All Eastern Conference in
Philadelphia, Pa. While earning her degree
in music at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School

CLAYTON — The Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund at the Clayton Opera
House will open its summer season by presenting “Lost Channels,” sponsored by Driver’s Village. The event at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will be a folk-pop concert by Great Lake
Swimmers. accompanied by a visual presentation by the bestselling author and photographer, Ian Coristine. Tickets are $20
each and can be purchased at the opera
house box office, by calling 686-2200, or
online at ClaytonOperaHouse.com.
Great Lakes Swimmers is a Torontobased band led by vocalist and songwriter
Tony Dekker.
Mr. Dekker frequently chooses to record
in rural locations, which for the most recent album, “Lost Channels,” meant the
Thousand Islands region. Ian Coristine, regional historian and local photographer,
invited GLS to record in the Thousand Islands, helping them gain access to record
in unique acoustic environments like
Singer Castle on Dark Island.
Ian Coristine is well known for his aerial
photography of the Thousand Islands. He’s
published five books of such photography,
the latest being “The Very Best of Ian Coristine’s 1000 Islands,” which will be dis-

played during the concert. He discovered
his love of the Thousand Islands while flying his Challenger and began taking photographs from his plane. After buying one
of the Thousand Islands and successfully
publishing five books, he began collaborating with Great Lake Swimmers on their
album “Lost Channels.”
According to Mr. Dekker, this specially-
created music “was meant as a complement to Ian’s photographs and his unique
perspective of the Thousand Islands area.”
While the band plays, the photos that
Dekker refers to will be shown on a slide
show to tie in with the music for the full
artistic effect that anyone can appreciate,
especially those who identify with the
Thousand Islands.
Though Great Lake Swimmers are able
to fill large halls, the Clayton Opera House
provides a small, personal setting. Mr.
Dekker said, “In some ways I think our music is best represented in small, intimate
venues, especially if there is a historical rel-
evance there. I find that there's a greater
connection with the audience, and we really see these kinds of concerts as special
events.
There's an intangible quality about
playing in these settings that we are really
thrilled by as musicians.”
Upcoming events at the opera house include the Orchestra of Northern New York
performing at 7:30 p.m. July 1, presented
by TIPAF and sponsored by the Northern
NY Community Foundation.
On July 3, the Rock-For-The-River concert will be held by Save the River beginning at 7 p.m.

Twentieth Mennonite fest to mark ‘Generations’
CROGHAN — The Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association is holding its
20th Annual Zwanzigstein Festival from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. July 3 at the Adirondack
Mennonite Heritage Farm off Erie Canal
Road outside of Croghan.
For the past 20 years, the Zwanzigstein
Fest has been providing history and fun for
adults and children in the Lewis and Jefferson County areas. A generation of children
has grown up with Z Fest as a part of their
lives; in honor of this, the theme for this
year is “Generations.”
As a part of the “Generations” theme,

this year’s Z Fest will included a wide variety of events for children, including a rock
climbing wall, live animals, and arts and
crafts. A special highlight will be the “Generation Games” which pair children and
adults for old fashion games such as threelegged races and balloon toss.
For adults there will be historical tours
of the property, a regional market, silent
auction, demonstrations of various crafts
and more. One highlight for this year’s festival includes a recently acquired loom
showcasing a “Sheep to Cloth” display,
which shows all steps of wool production.
Also, new this year is a special presentation
featuring members from the original 20
families of Mennonites that settled the region who will discuss life lessons from past
generations.
In addition to these events, there will be
a variety of home cooked and freshly prepared foods, including homemade ice
cream and baked goods, local favorite
Croghan bologna, and meatloaf dinner.

at the Russell Opera House at 7 p.m. July 31
as part of the “Meet Me at the Russell
Opera House” concert series.
Stringfolks is a two-time recipient of
New York State Council for The Arts decentralization grants. For two years, the band
traveled extensively throughout the St.
Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties region, performing programs based on the
individual history of each town or village
along the concert route. Topical songs
were performed in each locale, based on
extensive research. An historical narrative
was incorporated into each program.
A modern day rendition of the frontporch or social bands of earlier times,
Stringfolks evokes a time before radio,
recording, movies and television and music videos. The members of Stringfolks
work in different walks of life by day, but
often come together on Sunday afternoons for music-making and potluck dinners. They have collaborated for more
than four years. The musicians include

providing harmony vocals. Adding color to
the band, Anita Figueras specializes in
high harmony vocals, flute and small percussion, and rounding out the low end of
the music is Robert Best on bass guitar.
The band plays music from many different styles and historical periods, ranging
from old folk and roots music, gospel, classic country and folk music to more contemporary music in those same genres.
Stringfolks is most at home in the parks,
civic centers, historical associations and
concert halls of the north country.

The band was discovered by the world
in 1972 with the success of the song “A
Horse With No Name,” which paved the
way for a string of other hits including “I
Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t
Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair,” all staples of
1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio.
Slightly more than a year after launching the group, Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek were bonafide superstars.
America’s albums — six certified gold
and/or platinum, with their first greatest
hits collection, “History,” hitting four million in sales — displayed a fuller range of
the trio’s talents than did their singles.
Little River Band was formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1975. Fueled by a very
successful Australian hit single, “Curiosity
Killed The Cat,” the band began making
promotional visits to the U.S. in 1976. This
resulted in a U.S. hit single, “It’s A Long Way
There,” which broke into the top 30. More
concert performances in the U.S. followed, and in 1977 “Help Is On Its Way” (an
Australian number one single) and “Happy Anniversary” both narrowly missed the
U.S. top 10. In 1981 their single “Night
Owls” debut in the U.S. Top 10. Other hits
included “The Other Guy,” “We Two” and
“You’re Driving Me Out Of My Mind.”
Little River Band has performed over
350 live shows over the past few years and
has been very busy recording new CDs.
Little River Band was inducted into the
Australian Recording Industry Association
Hall of Fame at the 18th Annual ARIA Music Awards in 2004.

Thousand Islands Playhouse stages musical, drama
GANANOQUE, Ontario — The Thousand Islands Playhouse continues its 2010
season at Springer Theatre, 690 Charles St.,
with Willy Russell’s popular musical,
“Blood Brothers,” now playing until July 31.
In “Blood Brothers,” as in his plays “Educating Rita” and “Shirley Valentine,” Mr.
Russell uses the economic inequality in
England as a backdrop and catalyst for the
journeys of his characters.
It tells the story of a working class mother of six, Mrs Johnstone, pregnant yet
again and abandoned by her husband.
When she learns that she is carrying twins,
Mrs. Johnstone faces the possibility of losing her children to social services.
She strikes a reluctant bargain with her
childless employer, Mrs. Lyons, to give her
one of the babies and never reveal the
truth. Ironically, as if drawn to one another
by forces larger than geography, economics or superstition, the boys meet.
Despite the differences in their background, they become best friends, fall in
love with the same girl, and remain united
until the secret of their birth right is revealed, with tragic results.
At the heart of the story is the compelling figure of Mrs. Johnstone, played in
this production by Kristin Galer. Ms Galer
was recently seen as Rosie in the Toronto
production of “The Lord of the Rings.” As

the dark and prophetic Narrator, the Playhouse welcomes Kyle Dadd, a former
member of the renowned Reduced
Shakespeare Company. Daniel Falk and
Graham Parkhurst fill the roles of the winning but doomed twins Mickey and Edward. We meet these characters as 7-yearolds, again during their adolescence and
finally as young adults.
Laura McCarthy appears as the fiery Linda, the boys’ common love interest. The ensemble also includes Laura Burns, Wendy
Fox (two past members of the Playhouse
Young Company), Joey Frohlinger, Seanna
Kennedy, Adrian Proszowski, Peter Van Wart
and Marlene Handrahan as Mrs. Lyons. The
production is directed by Greg Wanless with
musical direction by Sandy Thorburn.
“Blood Brothers” performances are at 8
p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $32 general admission, $30
for seniors 65 and older, $25 for people under 30 and $16 for students and children.
The Playhouse’s season at the Firehall
Theatre, 185 South St., began Tuesday
with a preview of the Tarragon Theatre
production of “Another Home Invasion”
by Joan MacLeod.
Terry Tweed is directed by Richard Rose
in this subtle and moving one-woman
show about an aging couple’s quest to remain together as they move into a nursing
home in Vancouver.
In “Another Home Invasion,” Ms.
MacLeod gives voice to a seldom dramatized subject: the indignity with which we
treat our elderly. Feisty Jean (Terry Tweed)
struggles to find a home for the aged where
she and her husband can finish their days in
dignity. Conscious that she has waited too
long, Jean hides her husband’s growing dementia from the selection board, while getting little support from her grown children.
Joan MacLeod is one of Canada’s foremost playwrights, the recipient of two
Chalmers Canadian Play Awards and
Canada’s highest literary honor, the Governor General’s Award.
The production is directed by Richard
Rose, with a sets designed by Scott Reid,
costumes by Jennifer Darbellay, lighting by
David Fraser and stage management by
Robert Harding.
“Another Home Invasion” opens today
and closes July 17. Showtimes are 8 p.m.
Tuesday to Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Friday and
Saturday. Tickets are $32 general admission,
$30 for seniors 65 and older, $25 for people
under 30 and $16 for students and children.

Lady Antebellum is the centerpiece of a
diverse lineup of strong national talent
scheduled for Chevy Court during the Fair,
which will run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 6.
The fair this year will follow the successful Chevy Court formula it pioneered in
2009. Last year, the fair doubled the number of national performers on Chevy Court

BROCKVILLE, Ontario — Brockville
and District Tourism will be celebrating all
that is bountiful, grown, stewed and
brewed in Ontario at this weekend’s inaugural 1000 Islands Wine and Food Festival.
The festival will bring producers and
consumers together in a fun and educational environment in order to experience
some of Ontario’s finest foods and beverages.
“We are thrilled to be part of the movement that promotes Ontario’s bounty,” said
Kim Barr, tourism manager. “The goal of
scores to be settled and lives that hang in
peril. Added to this are great friendships
and great enemies. All of this is set in an incredibly exotic, mysterious and attractive
environment, the Jungles of India.”
The cast includes Jason Amrhein, Leslie
Dame, Scott Eichholz, Chris McGovern,
Donna Moschek, Brandon Patterson,
Clare Paulson and Silas Swanson.
In July, August and early September,
Pendragon will present five performances
of “Encore,” a cabaret featuring songs from
the musicals produced during its history:
“The Three Penny Opera,” “Quilters,”
“Cabaret.” “Little Shop of Horrors” and
“The Fantasticks.”
On July 17, more than 20 actors from
across the 30 years of Pendragon’s history
will meet in Saranac Lake to participate in
a staged reading of Kaufman and Ferber’s
classic comedy, “The Royal Family.” A reception with all returning actors will follow
the performance.
On four Mondays in August, singer, songwriter and harper Martha Gallagher will
present her new and evolving mix of music,
humor and poetry. Various guests will join
Ms. Gallagher during those performances
and no two shows will be quite the same.

Lady Antebellum, pictured June 10 in Nashville, will perform a free-admission concert Sept. 1 at the New York State Fair in Syracuse.
MM
SYRACUSE — Lady Antebellum, the
hottest group in American country music,
will perform a free concert at the New York
State Fair’s Chevy Court this summer, anchoring a lineup designed to make the fair
one of the top free entertainment venues
in the country.
The band, which took home five trophies from the Academy of Country Music
Awards, topping all winners, will play at 8
p.m. Sept. 1.
Also scheduled to play Chevy Court during the 2010 fair are the classic rock bands
Kansas and Blue Öyster Cult, rising country star the Eli Young Band, and Blues Traveler.
The five concerts will be among 24 performances by national artists on the Chevy
Court stage during this year’s fair. All of
those shows will be free to fairgoers for the
price of fair admission.
“We want to make this the best free
stage in the United States,” fair Director
Dan O’Hara said. “We recognize that many
people are still struggling financially, and
we think New York families deserve an affordable opportunity to hear top-quality
live music. Lady Antebellum could headline at nearly any venue in the country. We
are proud to be able to make them available — for free — right here at the New
York State Fair.”
Lady Antebellum recently was named
top vocal group of the year at the Academy
of Country Music Awards in Nashville. The
trio also won song of the year and single
record of the year, each as artists and producers, for “Need You Now,” a hit that spent
five weeks as the No. 1 song on Billboard
Magazine’s country music chart last year,
and is now crossing over to pop radio, landing on top 40 stations across the country.
The band debuted in 2008 with a self-titled album that went multi-platinum and
earned the musicians recognition as top
and sole of a volatile marriage during a
searing night of dangerous fun and games.
Two plays from Fall 2009 and Winter
2010 will return as a part of the summer
repertory.
“Moby Dick Rehearsed” opened in November and toured schools and arts centers throughout the region in January and
February. The first summer performances
are July 2 and 3.
“Orson Welles’ adaptation of Herman
Melville’s epic mythical novel, brings the
fateful voyage of the Pequod to life using
the power of acting and imaginative theatrics,” director Karen Kirkham said. “‘Moby Dick Rehearsed’ is a thrilling sailor’s
yarn about a perilous, unforgettable adventure at sea.”
Returning after a successful run in February at The Lake Placid Center for the
Arts, the popular “Complete Works of
William Shakespeare, Abridged” features
Stu Ruttan, Matt Sorensen and Bryce Stanton. Bonnie Brewer directs. The first summer performances are July 9 and 10.
“The Jungle Book,” adapted by Monica
Flory from the Rudyard Kipling stories,
opened to a sold-out crowd on Mother’s Day.
“I read ‘Jungle Book’ a couple of years
ago and was struck by what a great adventure story it tells,” director Kent Streed
said. “There are chases, fights, stampedes,

Lady Antebellum is the centerpiece of a

which will run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 6.
The fair this year will follow the successful Chevy Court formula it pioneered in

The festival will bring producers and
consumers together in a fun and educational environment in order to experience
some of Ontario’s finest foods and beverages.
“We are thrilled to be part of the movement that promotes Ontario’s bounty,” said
Kim Barr, tourism manager. “The goal of

peril. Added to this are great friendships
and great enemies. All of this is set in an incredibly exotic, mysterious and attractive
environment, the Jungles of India.”
The cast includes Jason Amrhein, Leslie

Donna Moschek, Brandon Patterson,
Clare Paulson and Silas Swanson.
In July, August and early September,
Pendragon will present five performances
of “Encore,” a cabaret featuring songs from
the musicals produced during its history:
“The Three Penny Opera,” “Quilters,”
“Cabaret.” “Little Shop of Horrors” and
“The Fantasticks.”
On July 17, more than 20 actors from
across the 30 years of Pendragon’s history
will meet in Saranac Lake to participate in
a staged reading of Kaufman and Ferber’s
classic comedy, “The Royal Family.” A reception with all returning actors will follow
the performance.
On four Mondays in August, singer, songwriter and harper Martha Gallagher will
present her new and evolving mix of music,
humor and poetry. Various guests will join
Ms. Gallagher during those performances
and no two shows will be quite the same.

Lady Antebellum, pictured June 10 in Nashville, will perform a free-admission concert Sept. 1 at the New York State Fair in Syracuse.
MM
SYRACUSE — Lady Antebellum, the
hottest group in American country music,
will perform a free concert at the New York
State Fair’s Chevy Court this summer, anchoring a lineup designed to make the fair
one of the top free entertainment venues
in the country.
The band, which took home five trophies from the Academy of Country Music
Awards, topping all winners, will play at 8
p.m. Sept. 1.
Also scheduled to play Chevy Court during the 2010 fair are the classic rock bands
Kansas and Blue Öyster Cult, rising country star the Eli Young Band, and Blues Traveler.
The five concerts will be among 24 performances by national artists on the Chevy
Court stage during this year’s fair. All of
those shows will be free to fairgoers for the
price of fair admission.
“We want to make this the best free
stage in the United States,” fair Director
Dan O’Hara said. “We recognize that many
people are still struggling financially, and
we think New York families deserve an affordable opportunity to hear top-quality
live music. Lady Antebellum could headline at nearly any venue in the country. We
are proud to be able to make them available — for free — right here at the New
York State Fair.”
Lady Antebellum recently was named
top vocal group of the year at the Academy
of Country Music Awards in Nashville. The
trio also won song of the year and single
record of the year, each as artists and producers, for “Need You Now,” a hit that spent
five weeks as the No. 1 song on Billboard
Magazine’s country music chart last year,
and is now crossing over to pop radio, landing on top 40 stations across the country.
The band debuted in 2008 with a self-titled album that went multi-platinum and
earned the musicians recognition as top
and sole of a volatile marriage during a
searing night of dangerous fun and games.
Two plays from Fall 2009 and Winter
2010 will return as a part of the summer
repertory.
“Moby Dick Rehearsed” opened in November and toured schools and arts centers throughout the region in January and
February. The first summer performances
are July 2 and 3.
“Orson Welles’ adaptation of Herman
Melville’s epic mythical novel, brings the
fateful voyage of the Pequod to life using
the power of acting and imaginative theatrics,” director Karen Kirkham said. “‘Moby Dick Rehearsed’ is a thrilling sailor’s
yarn about a perilous, unforgettable adventure at sea.”
Returning after a successful run in February at The Lake Placid Center for the
Arts, the popular “Complete Works of
William Shakespeare, Abridged” features
Stu Ruttan, Matt Sorensen and Bryce Stanton. Bonnie Brewer directs. The first summer performances are July 9 and 10.
“The Jungle Book,” adapted by Monica
Flory from the Rudyard Kipling stories,
opened to a sold-out crowd on Mother’s Day.
“I read ‘Jungle Book’ a couple of years
ago and was struck by what a great adventure story it tells,” director Kent Streed
said. “There are chases, fights, stampedes,

Thousand Islands Playhouse stages musical, drama
GANANOQUE, Ontario — The Thousand Islands Playhouse continues its 2010
season at Springer Theatre, 690 Charles St.,
with Willy Russell’s popular musical,
“Blood Brothers,” now playing until July 31.
In “Blood Brothers,” as in his plays “Educating Rita” and “Shirley Valentine,” Mr.
Russell uses the economic inequality in
England as a backdrop and catalyst for the
journeys of his characters.
It tells the story of a working class mother of six, Mrs Johnstone, pregnant yet
again and abandoned by her husband.
When she learns that she is carrying twins,
Mrs. Johnstone faces the possibility of losing her children to social services.
She strikes a reluctant bargain with her
childless employer, Mrs. Lyons, to give her
one of the babies and never reveal the
truth. Ironically, as if drawn to one another
by forces larger than geography, economics or superstition, the boys meet.
Despite the differences in their background, they become best friends, fall in
love with the same girl, and remain united
until the secret of their birth right is revealed, with tragic results.
At the heart of the story is the compelling figure of Mrs. Johnstone, played in
this production by Kristin Galer. Ms Galer
was recently seen as Rosie in the Toronto
production of “The Lord of the Rings.” As

the dark and prophetic Narrator, the Playhouse welcomes Kyle Dadd, a former
member of the renowned Reduced
Shakespeare Company. Daniel Falk and
Graham Parkhurst fill the roles of the winning but doomed twins Mickey and Edward. We meet these characters as 7-yearolds, again during their adolescence and
finally as young adults.
Laura McCarthy appears as the fiery Linda, the boys’ common love interest. The ensemble also includes Laura Burns, Wendy
Fox (two past members of the Playhouse
Young Company), Joey Frohlinger, Seanna
Kennedy, Adrian Proszowski, Peter Van Wart
and Marlene Handrahan as Mrs. Lyons. The
production is directed by Greg Wanless with
musical direction by Sandy Thorburn.
“Blood Brothers” performances are at 8
p.m. Wednesday to Saturday and 2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $32 general admission, $30
for seniors 65 and older, $25 for people under 30 and $16 for students and children.
The Playhouse’s season at the Firehall
Theatre, 185 South St., began Tuesday
with a preview of the Tarragon Theatre
production of “Another Home Invasion”
by Joan MacLeod.
Terry Tweed is directed by Richard Rose
in this subtle and moving one-woman
show about an aging couple’s quest to remain together as they move into a nursing
home in Vancouver.
In “Another Home Invasion,” Ms.
MacLeod gives voice to a seldom dramatized subject: the indignity with which we
treat our elderly. Feisty Jean (Terry Tweed)
struggles to find a home for the aged where
she and her husband can finish their days in
dignity. Conscious that she has waited too
long, Jean hides her husband’s growing dementia from the selection board, while getting little support from her grown children.
Joan MacLeod is one of Canada’s foremost playwrights, the recipient of two
Chalmers Canadian Play Awards and
Canada’s highest literary honor, the Governor General’s Award.
The production is directed by Richard
Rose, with a sets designed by Scott Reid,
costumes by Jennifer Darbellay, lighting by
David Fraser and stage management by
Robert Harding.
“Another Home Invasion” opens today
and closes July 17. Showtimes are 8 p.m.
Tuesday to Sunday and 2:30 p.m. Friday and
Saturday. Tickets are $32 general admission,
$30 for seniors 65 and older, $25 for people
under 30 and $16 for students and children.

The band was discovered by the world
in 1972 with the success of the song “A
Horse With No Name,” which paved the
way for a string of other hits including “I
Need You,” “Ventura Highway,” “Don’t
Cross The River,” “Tin Man,” “Lonely People,” and “Sister Golden Hair,” all staples of
1970s Top 40 and FM rock radio.
Slightly more than a year after launching the group, Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek were bonafide superstars.
America’s albums — six certified gold
and/or platinum, with their first greatest
hits collection, “History,” hitting four million in sales — displayed a fuller range of
the trio’s talents than did their singles.
Little River Band was formed in Melbourne, Australia in 1975. Fueled by a very
successful Australian hit single, “Curiosity
Killed The Cat,” the band began making
promotional visits to the U.S. in 1976. This
resulted in a U.S. hit single, “It’s A Long Way
There,” which broke into the top 30. More
concert performances in the U.S. followed, and in 1977 “Help Is On Its Way” (an
Australian number one single) and “Happy Anniversary” both narrowly missed the
U.S. top 10. In 1981 their single “Night
Owls” debut in the U.S. Top 10. Other hits
included “The Other Guy,” “We Two” and
“You’re Driving Me Out Of My Mind.”
Little River Band has performed over
350 live shows over the past few years and
has been very busy recording new CDs.
Little River Band was inducted into the
Australian Recording Industry Association
Hall of Fame at the 18th Annual ARIA Music Awards in 2004.

million viewers and 2.8 million households, securing a place among ad-supported cable’s Top 3 sitcom telecasts (original or
acquired) of all time among households
and Top 5 original sitcom telecasts of all
time among key adult demos and viewers.
Mr. Engvall also starred in “Blue Collar
Comedy Tour, The Movie,” which premiered on Comedy Central and at the time
was the most watched movie in the channel’s history. The sequel, “Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again,” also premiered on

Twentieth Mennonite fest to mark ‘Generations’
CROGHAN — The Adirondack Mennonite Heritage Association is holding its
20th Annual Zwanzigstein Festival from 10
a.m. to 4 p.m. July 3 at the Adirondack
Mennonite Heritage Farm off Erie Canal
Road outside of Croghan.
For the past 20 years, the Zwanzigstein
Fest has been providing history and fun for
adults and children in the Lewis and Jefferson County areas. A generation of children
has grown up with Z Fest as a part of their
lives; in honor of this, the theme for this
year is “Generations.”
As a part of the “Generations” theme,

this year’s Z Fest will included a wide variety of events for children, including a rock

adults for old fashion games such as threelegged races and balloon toss.
For adults there will be historical tours
of the property, a regional market, silent
auction, demonstrations of various crafts
and more. One highlight for this year’s festival includes a recently acquired loom
showcasing a “Sheep to Cloth” display,
which shows all steps of wool production.
Also, new this year is a special presentation
featuring members from the original 20
families of Mennonites that settled the region who will discuss life lessons from past
generations.
In addition to these events, there will be
a variety of home cooked and freshly prepared foods, including homemade ice

traveled extensively throughout the St.
Lawrence, Jefferson and Lewis counties region, performing programs based on the
individual history of each town or village
along the concert route. Topical songs
were performed in each locale, based on
extensive research. An historical narrative
was incorporated into each program.
A modern day rendition of the frontporch or social bands of earlier times,
Stringfolks evokes a time before radio,
recording, movies and television and music videos. The members of Stringfolks
work in different walks of life by day, but
often come together on Sunday afternoons for music-making and potluck dinners. They have collaborated for more
than four years. The musicians include
John Danis on acoustic guitar and lead vocals, and Bonnie Danis playing banjo and

providing harmony vocals.

CLAYTON — The Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund at the Clayton Opera
House will open its summer season by presenting “Lost Channels,” sponsored by Driver’s Village. The event at 7:30 p.m. Saturday will be a folk-pop concert by Great Lake
Swimmers. accompanied by a visual presentation by the bestselling author and photographer, Ian Coristine. Tickets are $20
each and can be purchased at the opera
house box office, by calling 686-2200, or
online at ClaytonOperaHouse.com.
Great Lakes Swimmers is a Torontobased band led by vocalist and songwriter
Tony Dekker.
Mr. Dekker frequently chooses to record
in rural locations, which for the most recent album, “Lost Channels,” meant the
Thousand Islands region. Ian Coristine, regional historian and local photographer,
invited GLS to record in the Thousand Islands, helping them gain access to record
in unique acoustic environments like
Singer Castle on Dark Island.
Ian Coristine is well known for his aerial
photography of the Thousand Islands. He’s
published five books of such photography,
the latest being “The Very Best of Ian Coristine’s 1000 Islands,” which will be dis-

played during the concert. He discovered
his love of the Thousand Islands while flying his Challenger and began taking photographs from his plane. After buying one
of the Thousand Islands and successfully
publishing five books, he began collaborating with Great Lake Swimmers on their
album “Lost Channels.”
According to Mr. Dekker, this specially-
created music “was meant as a complement to Ian’s photographs and his unique
perspective of the Thousand Islands area.”
While the band plays, the photos that
Dekker refers to will be shown on a slide
show to tie in with the music for the full
artistic effect that anyone can appreciate,
especially those who identify with the
Thousand Islands.
Though Great Lake Swimmers are able
to fill large halls, the Clayton Opera House
provides a small, personal setting. Mr.
Dekker said, “In some ways I think our music is best represented in small, intimate
venues, especially if there is a historical rel-
evance there. I find that there's a greater
connection with the audience, and we really see these kinds of concerts as special
events.
There's an intangible quality about
playing in these settings that we are really
thrilled by as musicians.”
Upcoming events at the opera house include the Orchestra of Northern New York
performing at 7:30 p.m. July 1, presented
by TIPAF and sponsored by the Northern
NY Community Foundation.
On July 3, the Rock-For-The-River concert will be held by Save the River beginning at 7 p.m.
Senior voice students open Sunday Series
CLAYTON — This season’s Clayton

Notes and will be performing in “Grease”

er, on Sept. 12.

organizations program events in the
