I
n 2013 a number of Adams County events are passing milestones. At Serpent Mound, The Lighting of the Serpent is going
on its tenth year as is the Adams County Amish Bird Symposium. Both events plan to mark that ten-year achievement.
The Seaman Street Fair is celebrating 100 years and still going strong. The Bentonville Anti-Horse Thief Society is 160
years old this year and this summer marks the 40th
edition of the Ramblin’ Relics Car Show.
In 1913, a future country-western star named Lloyd
Estel Copas was born in Adams County, later to be
known as Cowboy Copas. Ironically 50 years ago, in
1963, his life tragically ended in a plane crash that
also claimed the life of Patsy Cline and Hawkshaw
Hawkins. In remembrance of that event the fifth
annual Cowboy Copas Memorial Concert will be
held in August at the Red Barn Convention Center in
Winchester. The Adams County Historical Society,
which hosts the event, is planning something special
to honor that anniversary --- stay tuned.
Perhaps most importantly, 150 years ago Morgan’s
Raiders passed through Eckmansville, Winchester,
Jack Town and Locust Grove, bringing the Civil War
to Adams County soil. This year to commemorate that
historic event the John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail
across Adams County, and Ohio, will be dedicated.
The 32-mile self-guided driving tour across Adams
County retraces the route Morgan’s cavalry followed in 1863. The Adams County trail starts in Winchester, crosses the
Harshaville Covered Bridge to Wheat Ridge, on to Wickerham Inn and Locust Grove. This year too the Harshaville Covered Bridge will undergo historic renovation with a planned reopening on July 15, the same date 150 years after Morgan’s
cavalry crossed it.

Mineral Springs Lake Farm Resort

C
ircle on your map a little gem
called Mineral Spring Lake. It’s
over 100 acres of fishing, water
sports, family recreation and camping
that you don’t want to miss.
Mineral Springs, as the name suggests, is fed by over a dozen underground springs. A beautiful lake that is
complimented by a backdrop of mountains that bloom with redbuds and
dogwoods come spring. The shoreline
is a mix of bays, points and timbered
coves that fishermen find ideal for
wetting a line.
When owner Billy Smalley impounded these hollows in the early 1970’s he
left pockets of standing timber, which
greatly improved the aquatic habitat,
and subsequent fish population that followed. Over the years the lake has been
stocked with largemouth, smallmouth,
perch, rock bass, bluegill and catfish.
Harmless freshwater jellyfish, about
the size of a penny, inhabit the lake too
and can readily be observed during the
summer in the lakes clear water.
At 103 acres, it is the largest body of
water in Adams County. The lake averages 27 feet with a maximum depth
approaching 60 feet. Though water
clarity varies with the seasons visibility
is nearly 60 feet in August. To preserve
the unique purity and clarity of the
lake only electric motors are permitted.
The camping here is as relaxing as
rocking on grandma’s front porch
swing. Peacefulness and quiet inhabit
the campground for a refreshing stay.
Mineral Springs boasts more than 300
campsites, full hookups, and most with
a view of the water. The camp store is
stocked with everything campers need
for a weekend or a month long stay.
Hiking, picnicking, shelter house,
showers and ATV trails are on the 500
acres that surround the lake. For hunters only twenty minutes away is Brush
Creek State Forest, Shawnee State Forest and Tranquility Wildlife area. For
nature lovers nearby Davis Memorial
State Nature Preserve and Shoemaker
Preserve offer wilderness hiking and
spring wildflowers, and if you’re a history buff explore the remote settlement
of Mineral Springs.

his year marks the 100th anniversary of the
birth Cowboy Copas, a county & western
legend who was born in Adams County

To memorialize the anniversary of his birth,
the Adams County Historical Society will be
presenting a special two-day Cowboy Copas
Concert Event at the Red Barn Convention Center,
Aug. 16- 17.
Entertainment will include The Kentucky
Express, The John Simon Band featuring Cathy
Copas Hughes, who is the daughter Cowboy
Copas, and local Copas relatives who will be
performing county classics. Saturday evening’s
concert will recreate the final performance of
Hawkshaw Hawkins, Cowboy Copas, and Patsy
Cline as preformed at Memorial Hall in Kansas
City on March 3, 1963.

The Adams County Chamber of Commerce proudly serves
its business community professionally and ethically. Established in 1989, this member-driven organization encourages
development, improvement, and conservation of the county’s
physical and economic environments. The Chamber staff
advocates for Adams county businesses and showcases
opportunities for growth.
The Chamber’s strength comes through service to its members and exposure of their businesses to the public. Member

The Chamber plays an active role on the various boards
in the county, including Leadership Adams, a community
service, leadership development organization. This county
leadership program develops and prepares emerging leaders to focus on common community issues and to collectively improve the quality of life for all who live and work
in Adams County.
The Chamber of Commerce also sponsors the AdamsBrown Counties Safety Council, providing free educational
training to businesses, which leads to discounts and bonuses
available through the Bureau of Workman’s Compensation. Currently over 30 companies from the two counties
participate with the Safety Council and membership continues to grow.
The Adams County Chamber was recently instrumental
in bringing the regional local United Way organization into
the county, replenishing much-needed funds for community
non-profit organizations.

HERB FEST CELEBRATES

ne of Adams County’s largest
annual events, the Wheat Ridge
Olde Thyme Herb Fair & Harvest Celebration, brings together about
150 artisans for three days of crafts,
herbal products and other natural
items.
The fair is the creation of Herb and
Kim Erwin along with their son Brad
on the family’s Grindstone Farm, at 817
Tater Ridge Road, between Wheatridge
Road and State Route 32, in West Union.
Last year the event drew an estimated
25,000 visitors.
It is a working farm complete with
beef cattle, 60 peacocks, hay fields and
pumpkin patches on 110 acres, but for
three days in early October, the Erwins
turn it into a celebration of farm life and
the nearby Amish country side.
“We enjoy it, but it’s a year-round
effort and we’re always trying to improve it,” says Kim. For example, this
year they hope to add glass-blowing to
blacksmithing and other skills demonstrated at the fair.
The year-round effort involves finding
true craft vendors. “We check out every
one to make sure they’re not just selling

stuff imported from China,” says Kim.
The Erwins get a lot of help from the
nearby Amish community. “It feels
like the whole community is involved,”
she says.
The Erwins launched the festival
five years ago after a similar familyoriented farm festival ended after more
than 20 years.

said he wanted to keep the familyoriented event going.
“An event like this portrays a positive
and true image of what Adams County

The nearby Amish community is
heavily involved in the festival baking
from scratch, pressing fresh apple cider
and preparing home-cooked meals to
support Amish schools. Two barns on
the farm encompassing 18,000 square
feet contain an assortment of eccentric
and unusual antiques.
Herb and lavender growers, herbal
and medicinal teas, soaps and other
concoctions are also offered.
The artisans on hand typically offer
unique metal yard art, wood-crafted
items from bowls to walking sticks,
hand-made pottery and sewn items
from quilters, weavers and knitters.
Special classes and demonstrations
such as shrubbery trimming, medicinal teas, natural art, and cooking with
herbal food and spices are featured.
There’s also plenty of music from groups
performing Creole, Celtic, Country and
other genres.
Another feature is the pumpkin cannon, acquired a couple years ago from
a man who makes them in Clarence,
N.Y. The air-powered canon can send
a six-inch gourd up to a half-mile from
the ridge.
“The boys really like the backyard
ballistics,” says Kim.
This year’s festival dates are Oct. 11- 13,
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.

Bureau “Quilt” Adorns Barn
O
ne of Adams County’s newest
quilt barns is located at 5400
Graces Run Road, Seaman,
near the Harshaville covered bridge.
The quilt pattern is the new Adams
County Travel & Visitors Bureau logo
which consists of nine icons, each icon
representing a unique aspect of Adams
County.
The quilt logo measures 12 feet high
and nine feet wide and was hand painted by Manelius Miller of Winchester.
Allen Miller and his sons hung the
mural in late September.
“The idea was conceived over a year
ago but finding the right barn at the
right location took some time,” said Tom
Cross, Executive Director of the Adams
County Travel & Visitors Bureau. “The
Bureau finally settled on a barn located
on Graces Run Road that is owned by
Linda Fennell. Ms. Fennell was very
cooperative and liked the idea of having
a quilt pattern adorn her barn.
“What makes the location unique
is the Harshaville Covered Bridge will
soon be undergoing historical renovation, plus the barn sits right on the
upcoming John Hunt Morgan Heritage
Trail. Graces Run Road also serves as
a gateway to the Amish Community.”
The project was paid for with a grant
from The Ohio Chapter of The Nature
Conservancy with funds to be used
toward the enhancement of tourism
in the county. LPK Brands of Cincinnati donated time and expertise to the
Bureau to design the logo.
Adams County has nearly 40 quilt
barns throughout the count y. The
Adams County Clothesline of Quilts
was originally conceived by Donna
Sue Groves whose idea has now spread
across the United States and Canada.
“I expect the Harshaville bridge renovation will draw visitors and with the
Morgan’s Raid Heritage Trail markers on
Graces Run and Wheat Ridge Road the
new quilt barn will get a lot of attention
from sightseers and visitors,” said Cross.

Doug and Sue Ruehl’s quilt rock wall.
One of Adams County’s most unique quilt squares
is not on a barn, but rests on a massive rock wall built
by Doug and Sue Ruehl. The stone wall supports a
unique “Pineapple” quilt painted by Randi Gish Smith
of Kentucky. A heavy equipment operator, Ruehl constructed the 100 -foot wall using 100 stones weighing
between one and five tons each. The “Pineapple” quilt
is located on 672 St. Rt. 247, Manchester.
The artful display of quilt barn murals that started
in Adams County has spread coast to coast and into
Canada creating nearly 100 dedicated driving trails. In
Ohio alone there are 17 counties with quilt barn trails.
That first quilt square, the Ohio Star, was dedicated
in 2001 at Lewis Mountain Herbs south of West Union.
Today about 40 quilt squares adorn barns and buildings across Adams County along a 120-mile driving
route called the “Clothesline of Quilts.” Sometimes
the barns have to be searched for, but finding them
is half the fun.

Trail Movement” by Donna Sue Groves and Suzi Perron. Groves sparked the phenomenon, searching for
a way to honor her mother, an accomplished quilter.

Morgan’s raid terrorized Adams County
Morgan’s Raiders

to Adams Count y when Gen. John
Hunt Morgan with more than 2,500
Confederate cavalrymen crossed the
Cumberland River into Kentucky in
July, 1863. Thirteen days later, the raiders
rode into Winchester and Eckmansville
where they shot a man and pillaged the
town. Behind Morgan was Union Gen.
Edward Henry Hobson with a force of
3,000 mounted soldiers.
What unfolded was a thousand miles
of panic and fear across three states before finally ending on July 26. Estimates
of the number of Morgan’s men varied
widely with some accounts saying there
were as many as 8,000 raiders. Morgan’s
cavalry would have stretched for miles
along rural country roads. It was the
longest raid of the Civil War and was
undertaken to pull union troops north
to take pressure off the Confederate
Army in the south.
Lester Horwitz’s book “The Longest
Raid” describes Morgan as a man who
looked danger in the eye and danger
blinked. Morgan was nick named
“The Confederate Thunderbolt”, and
according to Horwitz, his command
attracted young, adventurous soldiers
from across the South who wanted to
share in the glory.
Two days before arriving in Winchester, Morgan’s raiders crossed the
bridge over the Whitewater River from
Indiana into Ohio with the last man setting fire to the structure. The bridge over
the Great Miami was burned too. Moving swiftly and throughout the night
Morgan skirted the northern suburbs
of Cincinnati making Clermont County
by daybreak on July 14. After resting his
troops at Williamsburg, Morgan crossed
the East Fork Creek then burned the
bridge that spanned it and followed a
scout across northern Brown County.

Creek. After passing through Fincastle,
Morgan’s arrival in Adams County that
morning was heralded in by a young
man named Will McClanahan who
rode through Winchester yelling “The
rebels are coming!”
At Decatur, Col. Morgan’s regiment
turned northeast toward Eckmansville where they were not welcome as
Dr. Van Meter shot at the rebels then
quickly hid. Unfortunately William
Johnston, who was mistaken for the
shooter, was shot and killed by the
raiders. Once the raiders realized their
mistake they wanted the real shooter
brought before them and threatened
to burn the town to find him. They took
Rev. David McDill, pastor of the Cherry
Fork Presbyterian Church, captive. He
would not talk, perhaps saving the life
of Van Meter. Rev. McDill was released
the next day at Locust Grove. Johnston
was buried at Cherry Fork Cemetery;
his headstone reads “William Johnston,
came to his death by a ball in the head
fired by a rebel guerrilla in the village of
Eckmansville July 15, 1863. Aged about

The arrival of thousands of Confederate cavalrymen with galloping horses
and pistols blazing terrified the 475
residents of Winchester.
At the Bunn Hotel Morgan set up his
command headquarters and waited on
the stagecoach that carried the mail
and newspapers with information
of militia activity and Gen. Hobson’s
whereabouts. Meanwhile, the raiders
pillaged the town and nearby farms
for food and fresh horses. W hite’s
restaurant was pressed into service
fixing meals for Morgan and his staff.
The rebel’s camp was set up near the
town’s cemetery.
Impatiently waiting arrival of the
mail Morgan sent a detail to intercept
the coach. Upon retrieving the mail
Morgan ordered it brought to his room
in the hotel where Postmaster John
Frow suddenly appeared announcing
he represented the U.S. government
and he would sort the mail. Morgan,
who seemed momentarily taken aback
by his boldness, told the postmaster he
was the government that day and would
assist Frow down the hotel stairs with
his boot.
During the confusion and destruction of the raid a captured but wounded
Union officer named Hines managed to
escape with the help of Mrs. Rebecca
DeBruin who led him to a cellar where
he hid under the floorboards until the
raiders left.
Morgan, discouraged by the news
reports, ordered his entire command
assembled at the cemeter y east of
town and rode out to address the men
on their situation. Morgan’s army
now replenished with fresh supplies
and horses plundered from the town
and farms, hurriedly left Winchester
late that afternoon following Graces
Run and Wheat Ridge into Unity and
Duncansville, then turning north to
Jacksonville and Locust Grove.
Seven miles east of town the raiders
crossed the Harshaville Covered Bridge
on Graces Run, which they did not burn,
and is still in use. The following day Gen.
Hobson’s cavalry arrived in Winchester.
Hearing of Morgan’s advance the men
of Jacksonville quickly hid their horses
in a nearby sheltered rock hollow as the
raiders were always on the lookout for
fresh horses. The hollow is still known
today as “Horse Heaven.”

Just south of Locust Grove Morgan’s
Calvary spent the night of July 15 encamped on the grounds of Wickerham
Inn which was abandoned to the rebels.
The following morning the raiders rode
into Locust Grove for breakfast and
confiscated two fine horses belonging
to Edward Hughes. Hughes pleaded for
his horses but Morgan was in no mode to
return them. Hughes decided to throw
in with the rebel force and guide them
across Pike County and into Jackson
County in the vain hope of getting his
horses back. While in Jackson, Hughes
got drunk and became disorderly
causing Morgan to discharge him and
leave him horseless. When Hobson’s
forces arrived they promptly arrested
Hughes for treason and sent him to jail
in Hamilton County. Later, Hughes fled
the country for Canada.
Morgan’s raid almost ended at Buffington Island, the only Civil War battle
to take place in Ohio. Morgan escaped
the battle only to surrender seven days
later in Columbiana County.

To commemorate Adams County’s role in Morgan’s
raid, the Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau and
the Ohio Civil War Trail Commission have created the
John Hunt Morgan Heritage Trail, a 32-mile self-guided
driving tour tracing Morgan’s route across Adams
County. A dedication ceremony is planned July 15, the
150th anniversary.

swept through the village.
Harshaville Covered Bridge – Located on Graces
Run Road at Harshaville (bridge to undergo historical
renovation this summer).
Wickerham Inn – Ohio Historical Marker – Morgan’s
raiders encamped here, 1.5 miles south of Locust Grove
on St. Rt. 4, on July 15. Not open to the public.
William Johnston gravesite – Located in the Cherry
Fork Cemetery. Johnston was the only Adams County
fatality in the raid.
HISTORY
Historic John T. Wilson
Homestead dedicated
After nearly six years and countless
hours of work, Ralph and Patricia Alexander have completed renovation of
the historic John T. Wilson Homestead
in Tranquility. The two-story brick
home built in the 1840’s was known as
“Prominence” and was a stop on the
National Underground Railroad. The
homestead is a nationally registered
historic landmark.
Wilson, who lived from 1811 to 1891,
was a local merchant and fervent abolitionist, according to the Alexanders.
At age 50, Wilson gathered the initial
62 men of Company E, and as part of
the 70th OVI, led the men into battle at
Shiloh. Wilson later served in the Ohio
Senate and U.S. Congress.
When the Alexander’s purchased
the Wilson Home in 2006 the structure
was in disrepair. During reconstruction the goal was to ensure history was
preserved. At the homestead dedication,
the couple received a commendation

T
he trail to Buzzardroost Rock is
the most popular hike in Adams
County and for good reason. The
3.2 mile round trip takes hikers past
dolomite rock outcroppings and cliffs,
along hillsides covered with trilliums
in the spring and breathtaking foliage
in the fall.
The trail is not difficult but it can be
taxing, however senior hikers in their
80’s tackle the trail every year so don’t
be discouraged. The key is taking your
time and be sure of your footing. Allow ample time in your schedule to
hike the trail as it can take a couple
of hours just to navigate the hillsides.
The trail is well maintained, the folks
who manage the Edge of Appalachia
Preserve (EOA) see to that because an
estimated 2,000 visitors a year hike the
trail to Buzzardroost Rock.
At sensitive areas, wetlands, streams
and crevices, boardwalks and bridges
have been built so as not to damage the

laid out to avoid erosion and steps are
built into the trail winding up steep
hillsides. Hikers will pass through a
number of plant communities and see
diverse geologic history. The forest is
comprised primarily of oak, maple,
red cedar and poplar.
Buzzardroost Rock was named for
the turkey and black vultures that are
frequently seen riding the air currents
above the rocks and cliffs. The summit
is 500 feet above Ohio Brush Creek
offering those make the trek an outstanding view of the valley below and
the surrounding forest.
To get to the trailhead parking area
take Weaver Road (County Road-26) off
St. Rt. 125, approximately 7 miles east of
West Union. The parking area is on the
south side of the road. The trail head is
clearly marked. Hikers have to cross St.
Rt. 125 as the trail picks up on the opposite side of the road. After crossing the
road proceed to a foot bridge over Easter
Run Creek to a sign-in box, hikers are
encouraged to fill in the information.
According to the sign-in sheet hikers
from as far away a Japan, Norway and
Australia have hiked the trail.
The trail is self guided however occasionally there are guided hikes with
naturalists or local guides who know
the lay of the land. Check the Adams
County Travel & Visitor Bureau website

The EOA preserve has other hikes too
including the 2.5-mile Wilderness Trail
Loop and 1.5-mile Lynx Prairie.

For the sportsperson Adams County has many opportunities
from smallmouth bass fishing to hunting trophy whitetails. Adams County is renowned for its quality deer hunting, attracting
hunters from all over the nation to the farm county that is home
to some of worlds biggest whitetails. Here’s a list of public hunting and fishing opportunities.
Hunting
Tranquility Wildlife Area offers over 4,250 acres of public
hunting. Weedy fields, cedar thickets and crops create a variety
of habitats for deer, turkey, grouse and rabbits.
Shawnee State Forest is Ohio’s largest state forest at 63,250
acres. Good deer, turkey, squirrel and some grouse hunting. Other
places of interest would be the 8,000-acre Shawnee Wilderness
Area and the adjoining 8,000-acre Back Country Management
Area. The combined 16,000 acres form the largest block of backcounty hunting available in Ohio.
Brush Creek State Forest in northeastern Adams County is
over 12,000 acres and offers deer, turkey and some grouse hunting.
The Edge of Appalachia Preserve allows public hunting on
2,300 acres of preserve property by permit only. Permits are
free and are valid for both the archery and deer gun season.

Fishing
The Ohio River in Adams County offers good fishing for all
river species. Fishing for hybrid stripers, white bass, black bass
and catfish is good throughout the summer. Public boat ramps
are located at Manchester, Brush Creek, and Rome.
Ohio Brush Creek has an excellent spring white bass run
in late April. Smallmouth fishing is good on Brush Creek from
late April through July. Anglers will also find good numbers of
channel and flathead catfish, rock bass, bluegills and sunfish.
Brush Creek has five public canoe launches: Serpent Mound,
Jacksonville, Twin Bridges, Waggoner Riffle, and Beasley Fork
Bridge.
Adams Lake is a 47-acre lake and one of the first lakes in Ohio
to be stocked with trout each spring. Adams Lake also has catfish,
bluegills and good size largemouth. A boat ramp is located across
from park headquarters and is limited to electric motors only.
Winchester Lake is approximately a 30-acre body of water
located just west of Winchester on Tri-County Road. It contains
crappie, bass, bluegill and catfish. A ramp is available for small
boat launching. The lake is limited to electric motors only.
Tranquility Wildlife Area ponds are kept stocked with
largemouth, channel catfish and bluegill by the Ohio Division
of Wildlife.

The Adams County Amish Community on Wheat Ridge
had its humble beginnings in 1976 when seven families
looking for a fresh start relocated from Melroy, Indiana.
Perhaps encouraging the move was the late Bill Lafferty of
West Union who often visited the Amish harness shops in
Melroy and spoke favorably of the area. It is often repeated
that when the Amish first settled in Adams County the first
thing they did was raise a stink as many were originally
hog farmers.
The Wheat Ridge Amish gradually evolved from a farming
community into a merchant, industrial, and service community that now consists of nearly 100 Amish households.
The Amish community has three parochial schools
each with approximately 40 to 60 students. The students
attend school only through the eighth grade. Students
are employed soon afterwards in the various businesses
learning trades long after the school bell is no longer heard.
Today’s Wheat Ridge Amish Community is no different
from those early days in the 1970’s when the sound of horse
and buggy clip-clopped on the pavement was heard and
school children pushed scooters and commanded the reins
of small buggies guiding them to one-room school houses
where baseball is the preferred sport. Clothes still dry on
backyard clotheslines and women still wear the white sun
bonnets and tend to large, perfectly manicured family
gardens that are the envy of all who pass.
Travelers to Wheat Ridge still have to navigate narrow,
winding uphill roads, perhaps a covered bridge if coming
in from the west, all the while keeping a sharp eye out for
horse and buggy’s, and the scooters children push and
ride. Once atop the ridge the beauty is evident as the rural
surroundings haven’t change much over the past 30 years.
At the Wheat Ridge Amish Community the slower pace
of life is evident; a way of life that moves at a buggy’s pace.

Serpent Mound is the largest --stretching over a quarter mile
-- and most impressive of the few animal effigy mounds still in
existence in North America.
From the observation tower, one can see the raised earth clearly
depicting the winding coils of a giant snake overlooking the bluffs
above Ohio Brush Creek.
Archaeological evidence is limited, but Serpent Mound was most
likely built at least one thousand years ago by Native Americans.
It is likely that people from various cultures have been making
pilgrimages to the site ever since. The awe and wonder that the
mound must have elicited in its original architects still stirs
viewers today.
Was the Serpent a ceremonial construction, or a celestial
calendar? You can learn what archaeologists have discovered at
the site of one of North America’s most enigmatic earthworks,
and one the few sites in the nation on the list for UNESCO World
Heritage Site nomination.
Archaeology & Natural History Museum: A small interpretive
museum includes displays of artifacts, including shards of pottery and handsomely crafted weapon points left behind by early
Native American cultures. The fascinating geological history of
the area is also interpreted. The Serpent Mound was built within
a rare geological disturbance known as a crypto-explosion zone.
You can learn what that means to geologists today, and what it
might have meant to the ancient peoples. Park staff is available
at the museum to answer questions.
Park, Nature Trail, & Picnicking: Bring a packed lunch with
you to enjoy in the historic picnic shelter, or spread your blanket
on the grass beneath one of the ancient trees rimming Serpent
Mound. A leisurely footpath winds around the perimeter of the
earthworks and overlooks the valley. For nature lovers, an additional half mile trail hugs the cliff bordering Scioto Brush Creek.
Here you can see scenic outcrops of the same dolomite limestone
that is found throughout much of Adams County. The highly
alkaline soils derived from these unglaciated bedrocks support
both hardwood forest and a rare short-grass prairie eco-system.
Serpent Mound is noted for its unequaled display of wildflowers
in the spring and impressive fall color. Field Guides to the area’s
natural and cultural history are available in the gift shop.

Shop marks 20 Years
As It was in the Beginning, Carol
Ward’s antique shop, last year celebrated 20 years in the antique business.
Carol and her late husband Don decided
an antique shop would give them something to do during their retirement years
and purchased a house in Manchester
that was built in 1896. Carol and Don
dismantled the house and rebuilt it on
their farm just off Unity Road near the
Wheat Ridge Amish Community, opening for business in 1992. “We decorated
with antiques and called it ‘Early Attic,’”
said Carol.
Among the more interesting antiques
Carol has come across was a 1700’s “Wig
Dresser,” a man’s dresser for holding
white wigs that were in fashion then.
“Most of the antiques I sell are from
the early 1900s and some in
the late 1800s,” said Carol.
“Interestingly what is selling now are 1940s and 1950s
retro furnishings.”
