God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. Acts 10:31-32 A Word From Our Founder The year 2010 brought with it major events that greatly impacted our world – from the devastating earthquake in Haiti to the continuing food crisis in West Africa. Yet, in the midst of a tumultuous world economy which impacted our financial support, The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative was able to continue its work serving the global community by providing desperately needed human relief efforts. As a result of our steadfast partnerships with socially responsible corporations and compassionate individuals around the world like you, we collaboratively leveraged the necessary resources to give aid and maintain our presence and work in Haiti, Ghana, Liberia, India, South Africa, and the United States. In 2010 we were able to continue our service areas of agriculture, clean water, education, and healthcare. We also continued to incorporate and expand our use of green technology to build models for self-sustained communities. I understand that the global economy has impacted many of us on a personal level. With that in mind, I am humbled and grateful for the sacrifice you have made to support The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative. Since our inception, 100% of your donations has gone directly to the mission fields; therefore, your gifts have had far-reaching impact. Every cent of contributions received has fed hungry children, provided safe, clean drinking water, built schools, provided healthcare, and provided housing and protection for orphans and vulnerable children. As a result of your generous giving, thousands of families received the much needed resources to help enrich and sustain their lives for years to come. The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative thanks you and pledges to continue to give 100%. The accomplishments of 2010 were remarkable. Our world continues to change, and people in need continue to exist. Our mission is to continue meeting the needs of those we serve and to stimulate educational and economic opportunities for the poor. We want to continue agricultural initiatives to empower men and women in Liberia and Ghana struggling to provide for their families. We desire to provide vulnerable children in Sierra Leone with education and healthcare. We wish to assist families in the United States fighting to survive the ever increasing levels of domestic poverty. It is our goal to continue to engage governments, communities, corporations, and individuals like you in providing cutting-edge, user-friendly, green technologies to help those communities sustain themselves over time. Your resources have made all that The Joseph Assignment has achieved possible. It could not have been done without your support. The greater your commitment now and in the future, the greater our impact on the world. I am honored to have this opportunity to partner with you in serving others…together we are still changing the world. Dr. Alexis L. Felder, President and Founder 2 Just because people are born into poverty, does not mean they are destined to a life of poverty. Through collaborative initiatives, we can leverage the resources necessary to stimulate education and economic opportunities for the poor. We remain accountable to our supporters and committed to operating with integrity, transparency and compassion. Thank You! 9 Expanding Our Reach Kenya Kenya is located in East Africa and is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia with the southeastern portion of the country lying along the Indian Ocean coast. Kenya has a population of approximately 40.9 million people. Fifty percent of Kenyans live below the poverty line. Liberia After 15 years of civil war, 3.4 million Liberians are still struggling to produce or obtain the basic essentials to survive. Safe water is hard to come by. Adequate school facilities and learning materials are scarce throughout the country. Sierra Leone Sierra Leone has a population of 5.9 million people. Almost half the population lacks adequate healthcare and sanitation. Almost a quarter of children die before their fifth birthday, and an average of 231 die each week from diarrhea. Somalia More than half the population of Somalia, 3.7 million people, require humanitarian assistance. Famine is declared when acute malnutrition rates among children exceed 30% and more than 2 people in 10,000 die per day. Currently in Somalia, there are 20–30 people per 10,000 dying every day. One child dies every six minutes. The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative can make a tremendous impact to address these needs. Your assistance is needed to transform their lives. Well donated by Damper Family in Amanfrom, Ghana. 10 Why We Serve Clean Water Well donated by Luster Products in Asabiem, Ghana. • Nearly 1.1 billion people do not have safe water to drink. • A child dies every 15 seconds from a lack of clean water. • 2.3 million children who die before age 5 worldwide, die of a water-related disease. • Children often walk miles every day to collect dirty water to drink. • 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation services. We provide fresh and clean water by digging a well in a community that is in desperate need of safe drinking water. No one should die from drinking contaminated water when clean water is only 100 feet below the surface. Orphans and Vulnerable Children • Approximately a staggering 53,100,000 orphaned children live in Sub-Sahara Africa. In India approximately 12,400,000 orphans and almost 40,000,000 vulnerable children are in need. • An estimated 6,000 children are orphaned by AIDS everyday. • Children account for half of all civilian casualties in wars in Africa. We work to raise the awareness of the drastic despair that orphans face daily. We educate individuals and corporations on how we can address these needs together and make a tremendous impact on providing for the world’s orphans and vulnerable children. Shelter House built in Odoben, Ghana. • More than 1 billion people are living in unsafe and improvised living conditions. • In most shelters, 5 to 12 people share one 10' x 10' room. • The structural quality is very poor and dangerous in most thatch and clay homes. •Poor housing means diseases spread more rapidly. As we improve living conditions, we reduce the time burden of women and children, enabling them to attend school. By providing more sanitary living conditions we can minimize the spread of communicable diseases. 11 Well donated by Dr. G. Nikki Pierre Family in Penkoase, Ghana. Food Security • Malnutrition plays a part in more than half of all deaths worldwide. • More than 900 million people go to bed hungry every day; 300 million are children. • Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. • Children who are poorly nourished suffer illness up to 160 days of out 365 days each year. Joseph Assignment Life Farm in Awusem, Ghana We provide necessary resources, technical expertise, and guidance to local farmers. We focus on sustainability, quality, increased yields, and increasing capacity to improve the quality of life for the farmers and their families. Education • 134 million children between the ages of 7 to 18 have never been to school. • Girls are more likely to go without schooling than boys. • Children are more likely to be forced into child labor if they are not attending school. Providing quality education is the key to keeping young women off the streets and preventing children from becoming child laborers. Health Care • Measles, malaria and diarrhea are three of the biggest killers of children. • More than 30 million children in the world are not immunized against treatable or preventable diseases. • 1-in-4 children who die before age 5 worldwide, die of water-related disease. • Diarrheal diseases kill five times as many children in the developing world as HIV/AIDS. MRI machine donated to Liberia by The Joseph Assignment. Proper nutrition and healthcare save lives and significantly reduce the spread of communicable and treatable diseases and their effects on children and their families. 12 Holistic Approach Our approach is empowerment. We know that it is not enough to just provide clean water and leave a village of people without education and food. Therefore, we take a holistic approach as set forth in our Rural Village Transformation Plan. We ensure that the people living in these remote villages have an opportunity to become self-sustaining and productive citizens within their society. When we leave a village, it is our goal that every resident has learned to read and write, has learned to farm and manage money, is economically empowered and has access to clean water. We develop self-sustaining communities throughout the world by investing in permanent social and economic infrastructures. We want to give them the freedom to live healthy and productive lives. Thank You! 16 Highlight Testimonials …the construction of the girls’ dormitory will increase the enrollment of girls. This will in turn help increase the literacy rate of women. Your good works have attracted many students from far and near; the student population of the school has now doubled. The bore-holes have provided the community with good drinking water thereby saving people from water-born diseases. We take so much for granted. Without access to things like fresh water, others suffer needlessly. JAGI has been instrumental in connecting donors with a proven partner in drilling freshwater wells, thereby impacting the lives of many.
