Caring comes naturally at Sembawang Town.
On 26 October, we visited eight needy families
with a caring mission. Together with grassroots
volunteers, MPs and staff from the Town Council,
we helped these families who are staying in
rental blocks to spruce up their units, just in time
for the coming year-end holidays. We cleaned,
we scrubbed and we painted. We repaired and
replaced broken-down furniture and appliances.
Read all about it on pages 3 to 5.
Besides caring for each other, we also care for the
environment. We came together for our yearly
Tree Planting Day in support of Clean and Green
Singapore. Turn to pages 6 to 8 for photos of our
various green activities for 2014. Besides planting
trees, we can do more for our estates. Make
use of the litter bins, mind where you smoke,
use common areas and amenities with care, and
dispose of bulky refuse in the proper way. A
little effort goes a long way in achieving a clean,
beautiful and green Sembawang Town.
Another way to care for our environment is
to reduce our utilities usage. By doing so, we
can help to conserve the environment, while
also saving money. Learn more about the Town
Council’s efforts to mitigate rising cost pressures,
and view a short financial report for the past
financial year on page 10.
Let’s continue to care for our neighbours and our
estates to make Sembawang Town a caring town
and home for all. In closing, I wish all residents

Sifat penyayang memang menjadi lambang
penduduk Bandar Sembawang.
Pada 26 Oktober, kami melawat lapan keluarga
yang memerlukan dengan misi membantu. Bersama
sukarelawan akarumbi, MP dan staf dari Majlis
Bandaran, kami membantu keluarga-keluarga yang
tinggal di blok sewa untuk mengubah elok rumah
mereka sebelum cuti hujung tahun. Kami berganding
bahu untuk mengemas, mencuci dan mengecat di
samping memperbaiki dan menggantikan perabot dan
alat-alat yang rosak. Baca kisah selanjutnya di halaman
3 hingga 5.
Selain mempunyai jiwa kemasyarakatan, kami
juga mengambil berat tentang alam sekitar. Kami
bergotong-royong bagi acara tahunan Hari Menanam
Pokok untuk menyokong Bersih dan Hijau Singapura.
Gambar-gambar aktiviti-aktiviti hijau kami untuk tahun
2014 boleh didapati di halaman 6 hingga 8. Selain
menanam pokok, banyak lagi perkara yang boleh
dilakukan untuk estet kami. Gunakan tong sampah,
bertimbang rasalah apabila anda merokok, gunakan
tempat awam dan kemudahan dengan cermat, dan
buang barangan besar dengan cara yang betul. Setiap
usaha, walaupun kecil, dapat mengorak langkah bagi
perubahan yang bermakna untuk menjadikan Bandar
Sembawang tempat yang bersih, cantik dan hijau.
Salah satu cara untuk menjaga alam sekitar adalah
untuk mengurangkan penggunaan utiliti. Dengan
melakukan sedemikian, kami bukan sahaja memelihara
alam sekitar, malah dapat menjimatkan wang. Pelajari
apa yang telah dilakukan oleh Majlis Bandaran untuk
meringankan tekanan kenaikan kos, dan bacalah
laporan kewangan ringkas untuk tahun lepas di
halaman 10.
Marilah terus mengukuhkan jalinan kejiranan dan sifat
prihatin terhadap estet kami untuk menjadikan Bandar
Sembawang kediaman yang membangkitkan kecintaan
dalam hati semua. Sebagai penutup, saya ingin
mengucapkan Selamat Hari Natal dan Selamat Tahun
Baru kepada semua penduduk.

Living alone in one-room rental apartments, some of our town’s elderly residents struggle with the day-to-day upkeep of their homes. On 26 October, we
paid a visit to Blocks 3 and 4 of Marsiling Road to carry out refurbishing works for residents of eight units.
We came together as one – our MPs, volunteers, grassroots leaders and even students from Si Ling Secondary School – using materials sponsored by the
Town Council, and a whole lot of hard work, we put in new furniture, a fresh coat of paint, and a smile on everyone’s faces.
Mr Hawazi Daipi, our Town Council Chairman said: “We realised that the older part of Sembawang GRC lies in Marsiling. Many elderly residents are
without family support, so we must help to clean and tidy up their apartments. Know your neighbours so we can help each other in times of need.”
Gloves on and ready to roll
For a good cause
The energy from the volunteers was infectious as they set about their tasks.
Working tirelessly to shift all existing household items onto the common
corridor, they also mopped up every nook and cranny of the apartment
before giving the walls a fresh coat of paint.
Staying alone with no immediate forms of assistance is daunting. Being
wheelchair bound, Mdm Roslina Binte Zainuddin had a lot of difficulties
when she tried to move her things. She said:“I’ve always dreamed of
renovating my house so this is a dream come true.”
With safety being a major concern, old and tarnished items were replaced
with new furniture according to each resident’s needs.
Through the warm and concerted efforts of everyone who participated,
smiles of gratitude broke out on our residents’ faces as they witnessed
the amazing transformation of their abode. Said a jubilant Mdm Ong,
“Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!”
Amidst the physical cleanup, our MPs Mr Vikram Nair, Ms Ellen Lee, Mr Ong
Teng Koon and volunteers laughed and chatted merrily with the excited
residents. Their positive energy brought cheer to the morning’s proceedings!

Menyayangi satu sama lain
Hidup bersendirian di rumah sewa satu bilik, beberapa penduduk warga tua bandar kita mengalami kesulitan menyelenggarakan rumah mereka. Pada 26
Oktober, kami telah membuat lawatan ke Blok 3 dan 4 Marsiling Road untuk menjalankan kerja-kerja membaik pulih untuk penduduk di lapan unit.
Kami tiba bersama - Ahli Parlimen, sukarelawan, pemimpin akar umbi dan para pelajar dari Sekolah Menengah Si Ling – dan dengan menggunakan bahanbahan yang ditaja oleh Majlis Bandar, kami bekerja keras untuk meletakkan perabot baru, cat baru dan senyuman di wajah semua.
Encik Hawazi Daipi, Pengerusi Majlis Bandar kami berkata: “Kami menyedari bahawa Marsiling adalah kawasan yang lebih lama di GRC Sembawang. Ramai
penduduk warga tua tiada sokongan keluarga, jadi kami perlu membantu untuk membersihkan dan mengemas rumah mereka. Kenalilah jiran anda supaya
kamu boleh membantu satu sama lain di waktu keperluan. “

Semasa melakukan tugas, tenaga daripada sukarelawan membangkitkan
semangat.Bekerja tanpa mengenal penat lelah untuk memindahkan
semua barangan rumah ke koridor awam, mereka juga mencuci lantai di
setiap sudut rumah sebelum mengecat dinding.
Tinggal bersendirian tanpa bantuan berdekatan adalah menakutkan.
Pengguna kerusi roda, Puan Roslina binti Zainuddin mengalami banyak
kesulitan apabila dia cuba untuk memindahkan barangnya. Beliau
berkata: “Saya selalu mempunyai impian untuk mengubah elok rumah
saya jadi ini adalah impian yang menjadi kenyataan.”
Dengan keselamatan sebagai kebimbangan utama, barangan lama dan
rosak telah digantikan dengan perabot baru untuk keperluan setiap
penduduk.
Semasa kerja pembersihan, Ahli Parlimen kami Encik Vikram Nair, Cik
Ellen Lee, Encik Ong Teng Koon dan sukarelawan sempat ketawa dan
berbual-bual dengan penduduk yang ghairah. Tenaga positif mereka
membawa kegembiraan pada penduduk!
Melalui usaha keras dan bersepadu daripada semua yang terlibat,
senyuman kesyukuran terpapar di wajah penduduk-penduduk kami
apabila mereka menyaksikan transformasi menakjubkan rumah mereka.
Kata Puan Ong dengan riang, “Terima kasih semua, dari sudut hati saya!”

(Clean and Green Singapore)
Clean & Green Singapore Carnival @ North West
Keeping our environment clean is a simple message, but it requires
the effort of everyone to make it happen. The importance of a clean
environment was condensed into bite-sized information for the
audience through interactive games at the exhibition.
Gracing the event were Guests-of-Honour, Minister Khaw Boon Wan
and Ms Ellen Lee who went on a bicycle machine to experience the
importance of saving electricity. Mayor Teo Ho Pin also presented the
Clean and Green 2014 Awards to 17 award recipients from the North
West District in recognition of their contributions towards keeping our
surroundings healthy and hygienic.
The month of November is the season to mark our efforts in sustaining
the greenery of our country. With Mr Vikram Nair kickstarting the
event on 19 Oct 2014, our MPs picked up shovels to further raise the
awareness of supporting the tropical garden city initiative inaugurated
on 7 November 1971.

Woodlands residents and grassroots volunteers joined Ms Ellen on an
enthusiastic mission to keep our town clean and green.
Mr Hawazi Daipi likened the act of treeplanting to nurturing our
children. He said, “Seeing the tree grow strong and sturdy is like
seeing a child growing. Just like how we give nutrients and sunlight to
the plant, we have to give our children knowledge and make sure they
grow up healthy.”
Mr Hawazi joined students of Marsiling Primary School as they led
participants on a pledge to save the earth.
Mr Ong, Woodgrove residents and volunteers worked together
merrily to plant several new trees.
Taking the Clean & Green message to heart, Sembawang residents
picked litter and planted trees together with Mr Khaw.

Armed with trash bags, tongs and a love for our town, participants
also went on a litter-picking spree. Woodlands residents even made
a competition out of it, with the most hardworking residents walking
away with NTUC vouchers!
Keep Singapore Clean!
A project by Innova Primary School to advocate for a clean Singapore.
The aim is to instill consideration for others by keeping public spaces
clean and learning the importance of keeping Singapore clean through
litter picking.
It was also a day to commend the efforts of our dedicated cleaning
operators. Rain or shine, they work tirelessly to keep our living
environment clean. A heartening moment for our 5 winners from
each division as they were presented with cash prizes, certificates and
tokens of appreciations.
As part of the project, students worked with the Town Council to design
and paint litter bins which carry eco-friendly messages. Look out for
these colourful bins and let’s do our part to bin it!
North West CDC Best Cleaners Award: A Clean Sweep!
Conservancy cleaners Mr Ram and Mr Tan Yong Pheng have several
things in common. Other than being the winners of the North West
CDC Best Cleaners Award, the unassuming duo also said the award was
not something they had set themselves up for. Expecting only simple
‘thank you’s and smiles of appreciation for the work they do, winning
has been a pleasant and happy experience.
In the line for three and four years respectively, they have encountered
the best and worst of the estate cleanliness. While they do their best
to keep the areas spick and span, they maintain that residents must do
their part in keeping their own estates clean.
“Some residents choose to leave their rubbish beside the bin chute
hopper instead of dumping them in. They should be more considerate
to their neighbours because the waste will attract pests,” said Mr Ram.
Hygiene is a big concern for Mr Tan. He said he has cleaned up urine
and human faeces in lifts before and hopes for such acts to stop.
Collectively, they have a message for all: “Singapore can be a clean city
so long as everyone does their part!”

Our Singapore Conversation 2065
Low buzzing filled the hall at Woodlands Community Centre bright and early on Sunday, 2
November 2014. Seated at round tables, 160 students ranging from secondary school to tertiary
levels gathered to discuss the agenda for the dialogue - Our Singapore in 50 years. Together
with Minister Chan Chun Sing, students shared dreams and visions of their own, for our town
(Woodlands) and for Singapore.
Mr Chan’s affable demeanour drew earnest answers from the crowd. Besides hard work and
passion as main ingredients to build our dreams, he reminded the young audience that the
importance of opportunities and how we make of them determines our society’s progression.
“With great power comes great responsibility”, he quoted the famous line from the Spiderman
movie to highlight the relevance of taking ownership and initiative to give back to our society. In
doing so, we can create more opportunities for the next generation.
Mr Chan also reminded students to keep abreast of world trends, cultivate the ability to
anticipate and go beyond our home issues. “Read widely and learn how to insulate our
community from shocks”, he said.
Concluding the dialogue with 4 As: Awareness, Analyse, Apply and Alternatives; he gave
students a deeper perspective on what they can do for the nation.
Mr Chan also brisk walked with 1,300 Woodlands residents and visited a few coffee shops as
part of his Ministerial Community Visit that morning. Ms Ellen Lee and Mr Ong Teng Koon as
well as grassroots leaders also participated in the walk.

TC Financial Report FY 2013/2014
The greatest cost pressure facing our Town comes from increasing utilities charges.
Sembawang Town Council is taking steps to mitigate this negative impact by replacing the lighting
fixtures in our estates with energy-saving LEDs and buying on the energy retail market to achieve
savings on our current electricity tariffs.
The Town Council will continue to exercise financial prudence in the interests of our residents.
Where did the Town’s
money come from?
The bulk of the Town Council’s usable income
continued to come directly from residents in the
form of Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC).
Government Grants for the financial year totalled
$9,342,000, representing the next largest source
of the Town’s income.

An additional $7,560,000 came from other
income, such as fees charged for maintaining HDB
carparks, TOLs, fees for use of void decks etc.
What did the Town
spend it on?
The Town Council’s income totalled $58,082,000
with total expenses and transfers amounting to
$58,363,000.
Water and electricity was the highest expense
item for the year, incurring a total of $12,681,000.
To allow the Town Council to meet future cyclical
maintenance and replacement needs, a sum of
$16,318,000 was transferred to the sinking fund.
A total of $3,265,000 was also transferred to the
Town Improvement Fund for the year.
How much of the
Sinking Fund was spent?
The Town transferred $16,318,000 to the Sinking
Fund last year while returns on investments
furnished a further $1,461,000.
In total, the Sinking Fund gained $17,779,000 for
the financial year ended 31 March 2014.
During the same financial period, $18,440,000

Khairul Amri, our 29 year old local
soccer sensation shows us what it
means to live for your passion. He
was first discovered as an unpolished
gem at the tender age of 11, and
through the guidance of his coaches
he has now a sparkling 10 years of
professional soccer playing experience
under his belt (or rather, his boots)!
With Amri’s never say never attitude,
he has found himself another calling
– whipping up a storm with his family
at their cosy food corner located at
Woodlands Industrial Park. He shares
with us his fondest memories and
journey thus far, of his love for the
(nasi) padang and future aspirations.
Hi Amri, we’re delighted to have you with
us today! Could you tell our readers what a
regular day is like for you?
Usually I will go for my soccer trainings or come
to the stall – Chef Tiga Rasa – to help out. I also
make it a point to spend at least 2 hours with my
sons (5 years old and 14 months old) everyday
after my training sessions because I don’t want
to miss their growing up years. Nothing beats
the rewarding feeling when they run into my
arms as I enter our house.
You have an amazing track record! Looking
back, how has it been like to have played
soccer since your teenage years?
I had my first touch of competitive soccer
when I was 11. It was a huge achievement for
me to be presented with my full personal gear
after scoring 4 goals as a substitute player
under the”Milo Soccer School”. The fact that
I am playing for my country now gives me the
recognition and satisfaction that I have made it.
My parents, and now my wife have been very
supportive for as long as I can remember. They
have been to every single match I played and
their loud cheering and affections actually made
me a bit shy around my teammates (laughs).
Amongst your many outstanding goals,
which was the most memorable for you?
It was definitely during the Suzuki Cup 2007
held in Thailand. I scored the crucial goal close
to the final whistle, and with an aggregate
score of 3-2 we successfully became the
defending champions.
Will you encourage your kids to follow in
your footsteps?

I will give them the opportunity to develop
their interests. Now, my older son is starting to
show some signs of liking the sport. He always
says: “Daddy, come play soccer with me!”, so
I usually teach him some basics skills such as
heading and passing.
Soccer and food are quite different from each
other. How did you find your passion in F&B?
After marriage, I have more opportunities of
tasting my mother-in-law’s cooking. It’s so good
that I want people to recognize her food. Actually
she had her own stall for about 20 years but it
took some persuasion for her to start again. I’m
glad that we have done it.
Do you revise the menu on a regular basis, or
create a special menu for occasions?
We have a regular nasi padang menu with special
items like assam pedas and sambal crayfish. In
time to come, we want to offer mee soto and nasi
minyak (a type of nasi biryani) to our customers
daily. We do catering as well, with our menu
created to suit the Malay, Indian and Chinese
tastebuds.
How has this journey been so far?
It’s a great start. The inital patronage was mainly
by friends and family but it’s slowly taking off with
residents, students and teachers coming to try
our food. Not many people are aware that this
coffeeshop has reopened after 2 years, but we
just have to carry on and not stop at all. I believe
it will only get better.
What’s your biggest satisfaction from running
the business? And your motivation comes
from..
Seeing my food completely wiped out from the
display. There were also times when we were
preparing for closing, and customers still kept
on coming. Success stories of how small stalls
at industrial areas make it big really inspire me.
I hope to move on gradually to housing estates,
to the town area and finally owning my own
establishment with a modern concept.

You never know till you try! There’s a 50% chance
of success in everything if you try, but absolutely
nothing when you don’t.

You may have noticed that we have converted our
Facebook Friend profile to a Fanpage back in September.
While we enjoyed our cordial communication as
Facebook friends, we were also getting worried that
we might hit the limit of 5,000 friends. We made the
decision to convert to a Fanpage to ensure that we can
accommodate more of our residents.
Our new Fanpage is designed as an efficient and fuss-free way to serve
up interesting news and snippets, while also attending to our residents’
