HURST JAWS OF LIFE® HISTORY
40 Years of Saving Lives
For 40 years, Hurst Jaws of Life® has set the standard in emergency
rescue products. Our commitment to research and development,
along with our dedication to quality engineering and
manufacturing, has resulted in a line of products known for their
outstanding safety, durability, and performance. Because of
this commitment, Hurst Jaws of Life® rescue systems have been
instrumental in saving hundreds of thousands of lives throughout
our 40 year history.
The Hurst Jaws of Life® rescue tool system was the first ever to be
designed and the patent application was made on April 26, 1971.
The tool was introduced shortly thereafter in 1972. Originally
manufactured by Hurst Performance Inc, in Warminster, PA,
the tool was developed for use in the race car industry. Hurst
Performance also manufactured the famous Hurst Shifter which
was used extensively in race cars. The original tool was a two-part
system consisting of a 32-inch hydraulic spreader powered by a
two cycle gasoline power unit. When activated, the scissor-like
spreaders opened and forced crushed metal away from trapped
victims. Because the tool reduced the time to extricate a victim
from a car crash, literally snatching them from the “jaws of
death”, the tool earned the name Jaws of Life®. From race track
beginnings in 1972 to the rescue heroes of today, Jaws of Life®
systems travel with more than 35,000 rescue squads, fire and
police departments throughout the world.
During the past 40 years the Jaws of Life® product line has grown
significantly. New spreaders, cutters, rams, and very lightweight
tools have been added to the world-renowned line. In 2005,
Vetter (pneumatic products) was acquired to add high and low
pressure airbags and many Hazmat products. In 2006, Airshore
International was acquired to bring quality shoring products to
the Jaws of Life® family. In 2010, Hurst Jaws of Life® introduced
the next generation in rescue tools – the eDRAULIC™ line of
electric-hydraulic tools. The new, game-changing eDRAULIC™
line of rescue tools features the un-tethered power of hydraulics
coupled with the freedom of no power unit. Continuous
development of the product line continues in both the
pneumatic and hydraulic areas as the Company strives to provide
the finest, most reliable rescue products to its customers.

STREAMLINETechnology coupling combines the advantages of a
single coupling with those of a two-hose system. This coupling
simplifies the connecting and disconnecting of hydraulic
rescue tools and saves valuable time at the rescue scene.
Easy coupling
Clearly identifiable connections permit simple connection
with a single step. This robust and easy to handle coupling
allows trouble-free coupling even under the harshest
conditions. Operation is quick and easy, even when wearing
gloves.
Connects with or without pressure
STREAMLINETechnology coupling can be operated in only one
step even under pressure! Unlike other coupling systems, the
STREAMLINETechnology coupling has integrated pressure control
valves which make dump valves obsolete. Since there is no
need to return to the power-unit to relieve pressure, precious
time is saved and the rescue equipment is ready for action at
any time.
Retrofit existing equipment
Existing HURST twin-line hose systems can be converted to

The Science Behind Cutting Capability
With intuitive blade designs engineered to pull material to the center of the blades, industry leading cutting force at the point of attack
and leading ergonomic design, Hurst Jaws of Life® cutters are undeniably the industry standard.
Years ago industry challengers began hyping “maximum cutting force” as the key selling point when considering cutters. This created
an inaccurate standard of – the more force, the better.
This focus on “maximum cutting force” has created confusion in the marketplace regarding how cutting forces are calculated, why
advertised cutting forces may vary from National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) guidelines, and how some manufacturers inflate
cutting force measurements for marketing purposes.
In the Hurst Jaws of Life® testing lab, our engineers calculate force measurements based on known facts, and then conduct realworld tests with production-grade tools to verify the data. And finally, we make sure our products are tested, retested, and tested
again, until we are completely certain they can handle even the toughest emergency rescues.
Drawing Capability
A key component in cutting capability is the cutter blade’s ability to draw material to the rear of the blade. An effective
cutter draws the metal to the rear of the blade where the cut force is greatest. This key component in cutting capability
is often overlooked.
Cutting Force at the Right Point
Today’s modern vehicles use highly advanced types of steel in their construction. These highly reinforced structures do
not compress into a tight bundle like the A-Posts, Roof Rails and B-Posts of passenger vehicles built in the 80s and 90s.
Instead, when the cutter blades make contact with the high-strength outer layer of steel in today’s significantly larger
posts, they are immediately up against the ultra-high-strength press-hardened Boron sheet metal and Martensite
Boron Steel which lines the inside diameter of the structure. This means that when cutting large diameter posts on
today’s vehicles, maximum cutting energy is required at the tips of the blades at near full open position.

These advanced types of steel do not cut. And, compression of these structures is
limited, which results in fracturing at greater than half their original diameter.
Cutter Blades
All Hurst Jaws of Life® cutter blades feature forged shock-resistant tool steel that has been uniquely heat treated using a four-step
tempering process, which makes the blades dent and chip resistant while maintaining blade ductility. Star-grip control valves
provide access from every angle; strong materials provide durability and prevent blade breakage and quick opening and closing
speeds save valuable time.

each other nearest to the blades’ pivot point. This means the cutter’s weakest point is when the blades are in the full open position.
The Hurst Jaws of Life® S 700 Series cutter design has improved blade geometry, which enables the tool’s blades to attain their
maximum cutting capability at a 5-inch opening. The blades on the S 700 Series cutter feature a 7.3-inch opening in the fully open
position and are specifically shaped to generate a high degree of power at the tip of the blade, making them more suitable for cutting
the larger diameters and stronger steel being encountered by rescuers today.
The blade tip on the new S 700 Series cutter features a punch-like design which aids in cutting the highly reinforced areas of the A
Pillar-posts and B-posts while maintaining the tool’s position outside the vehicle. Featuring three distinct cutting angles, as the S 700
cutter blades close, blade angles change, improving draw of the post material to the strongest cutting area at the rear of the blades.
The S 700 Series’ extrication capabilities include shipboard damage control, structural collapse, aircraft egress and hundreds of other
real world challenges.

The world’s first triple stage ram, the R 430, is capable of carrying out the heaviest rescue operations with push capacity up to 30

Through a telescopic design, its retracted length of only 18.7 inches can be extended to 50.98 inches in three stages. This long working range considerably reduces extrication times by consolidating steps normally required in a sequence of several traditional rams.

Quickstrut’s Robust Design Simplifies Work
The Quickstrut safety supports vehicles involved in an accident, whatever their position. The struts are positioned diagonally at an
angle of between 25 and 50 degrees. The car body is fastened to the ratchet strap with a hook. When the strap is tightened, the claws
of the swivelling top plate press into the car’s bodywork. The base plate affixes itself to the ground and can be additionally secured
using pins.
Extending and retracting the strut is very easy; simply push the release lever. The length can also be manually adjusted. An integrated
winch enables additional fine aligning.

One Power Unit, Two Applications – Lifting and Rescuing with Hydraulic Power
In a number of rescue situations loads have to be lifted prior or parallel to the application of cutter,
spreader or rescue ram (e. g. when subway coaches, trucks or buses are involved in an accident.)
Operation of lifting jacks: Once the mobile field manifold is connected
with the power unit, two HURST telescopic jacks with a capacity of
25 tons each can additionally be operated.
Operation of rescue tools: On the second hose pair a rescue tool can be
connected. A TRIMO power unit allows to connect
another rescue tool.

Rescue Support and Stabilization
The Hurst LSS Support System of blocks and wedges provide safe stabilization of vehicles and lifted loads during rescue operations.
Slip resistant and nonabsorbent, our incredibly durable blocks and wedges are made from recycled plastics and feature a load-bearing
capacity of 1,700 psi.
The HURST Support System allows for safe stabilizing of vehicles and supporting of lifted loads during rescue operations. This
prevents further movement of the vehicle during the rescue.
