A
t the age of eight I shared with my aunt
the firm belief that Animal Welfare
would be my calling. To this revelation
she replied, “it’s a tough job but you will
always be surrounded by great people.” By
picking up this newsletter I believe you are one
of them. Thank you. Thank you for caring
about the pets in our community, our mission
and our endeavors to save lives.
It is truly an honor to serve Halifax Humane
Society, our board and this community as the
new Executive Director. My aunt’s words of
wisdom ring loud and clear as I look upon this
organization’s history and we prepare to
celebrate 75 years of saving lives, 75 years of
lending a hand to the paws in need in our
community. To date w e’ve touched an
estimated half of a million lives, a feat that
could not be done without great people.
I’ve spent 15 years in Animal Welfare
Management; 7 of them were spent consulting
with shelters around the globe to raise
adoptions and create innovative programs. I
intend to draw from this experience to evaluate
our unique area and develop plans that will
maximize our efforts in the years to come.
This means more activities, events, resources
and exciting opportunities for our supporters
and our pets.
Accepting this position means looking forward
with ample regard for our past. It means
garnering support for the next 75 years and
many more. As part of that responsibility I
will do my best to keep you informed about all

Interested In Becoming
A Volunteer?
At HHS, we actively welcome compassionate volunteers to assist us in our work.
Volunteers are a vital asset to the animals at
HHS, and help make many of our programs
possible. To become a volunteer you must
be 18 years of age or older, be willing to
make a commitment of time, attend a 2-hour
"orientation" at our shelter, and, of course,
must love animals!
A variety of positions are available,
including: Greeters, Office Helpers, Special
Events, Community Outreach, Delivery &
Collection, Pet Therapy, Kennel Assistance,
Walk & Socialize Dogs, Pet & Socialize

My Story

Connor the Cat adopted from HHS 3/23/10
Friday
Oh, no! Here come some people walking into
the cat adoption room. I’m “scary-looking”.
What am I going to do? I’m afraid they’re
going to see me naked! Someone neglected
me, and my fur got so snarled that I had to be
shaved almost down to my skin – except my
head and tail.
I’m so frightened, but somehow I know they
are trying to help me. It’s embarrassing,
though. Maybe if I hide in my litter box, no
one will see me. Oh dear - it’s not deep
enough… A lady sees me! She’s opening my
cage – I’m shaking all over – She sees in my
eyes how frightened I am.
Sunday
Here comes that same lady. This is the third
day she’s been here. She’s gentle to me –
yes, I do like her, so I’ll move towards her
when she sits down by my cage. I think I’m
ready to sit on her lap.
Monday
It’s my first night with the people who adopted me. How can I show them that I want
them to be my family? I know! I’ll sleep at
the end of their bed, and in the early morning
hours, I’ll lick their faces! I hope they like it.
There’s something else… A man has come
with her today, and he’s gentle with me, too.
He’s talking softly. I think they’re saying
they would like to give me a home. Oh,
please do! We’ll make it work – you’ll see.
Guess what? They understood. They love
me! We’re a real family.

she’s bringing a chair over to sit by me. She’s
talking softly to me. Maybe she’s nice, but
I’m not sure.
Saturday
Well, I made it through the first day… Oh,
here comes that lady again – She’s going to
sit by me again. Maybe I’ll touch her with my
paw today if she pets me. Okay, that worked
out well… I’m still scared and embarrassed
about being here – but I made it through the
second day…

You Don’t Need to be Rich to Leave a Planned Gift
When people think about leaving assets to a non-profit organization through one’s will, most
times they assume it’s a tool for only wealthy individuals. But that’s not true. There are many
ways to support the Halifax Humane Society through our Planned Giving Program and those
gifts often cost nothing during your lifetime. And thanks to the generosity of our Board
President Mel Stack, the preparing of your will also could be free. If you name the HHS in your
will, Mel will prepare it free of charge.
Financial and Estate Planning can be a confusing and sometimes daunting task but thanks to
dedicated supporters of the HHS, we can confidently guide you through the process. There are
numerous options for leaving gifts, even ones that provide a steady stream of income, and we
can assist you in making a meaningful charitable gift. If you would like more information
regarding how to develop your estate plan, including the different options that may be of the
most benefit to you, or, how to include the Halifax Humane Society, Inc. in the charitable

What an exciting time to be a part of the
Halifax Humane Society. As we close in on
our 75th anniversary, planning to serve the
community for the next 75 years has already
begun. Serving as Development Director can
often be a challenging position, especially as
we navigate out of difficult economic times,
but it is also an incredibly rewarding one
because you are on the front lines of the
future of an organization.
Whether we are raising funds for free
spay/neuter programs, the anti-cruelty task
force, or to care for an influx of confiscated
animals, you can be certain that every penny
is making a difference. 88 cents of every
dollar raised goes directly to care for abused
and neglected animals and to programs that
serve our community. We strive to be good
stewards of our gifts so that you, our
supporters, will be certain that the future of
the Halifax Humane Society will be as great
as the past.
We encourage you to visit the shelter to see
what we’re doing to make a difference on a
daily basis. And to meet those you entrust
with carrying out our mission of protecting
animals from cruel, neglectful and exploitative treatment.

also accept motorcycles, boats, jet skis, and RVs. If you own a vehicle you no longer use or if

Pet Memorials
Anyone who has had a pet understands they become a member of your family and will forever
live in your heart. And anyone who has lost a pet understands how difficult it can be. The
Halifax Humane Society provides a tool to help people celebrate the life of a pet by creating a
memorial page. To create a page, visit www.firstgiving.com/halifaxhumanesociety and click on
create a fundraising page. Once your page is created, you can upload photos, tell stories, and
email your unique link to friends and family to view the memorial page.

Prisoners Train Pets
Prison Pups Graduate from Obedience
The first class of the Halifax Humane Society,
the West Volusia Kennel Club, and the
Tomoka Correctional Facility’s Prisoner Pups
N Pals program will be finishing their training and graduating on Friday, March 4, 2011.
These great dogs have completed 7-weeks of
AKC-guided obedience training, which not
only makes them better canine citizens, but
also makes them more adoptable, too. Allyn
Weigel and Marj Blomquist, members of the
West Volusia Kennel Club, spend many hours
each week training the trainers at the facility;
teaching them the skills necessary to prepare
their students to complete a trial in accordance with the American Kennel Club Canine
Good Citizen program.
Five dogs started this intense program, and
we are happy to report that all five graduated
with flying colors. Next week you will get to
find out a little about Lilly, Gunther, Gabbie,
Scout, and Marci, not just from my perspec-
tive, but from the viewpoint of their trainers
whom have lived literally side-by-side with
them for seven weeks.
Anyone who adopts these special dogs will
get several bonuses. Not only will they
receive a ready trained dog, but they will get
a free 7-week AKC obedience course to make
certain they are bonded with their new pet,
and that their pet is not smarter than their
owner, in obedience, of course. In addition,
the AKC is registering them as AKC Canine
Partners; this designation comes with lots of
goodies, including a magazine subscription,
and the chance to compete head to head, or
nose to nose in obedience trials and rally
competitions around the country. You can see
that with this program everyone wins the
inmate, the dog, the new owner, and the HHS.

It’s Raining Cats and Cats!
A Home For Dakota

When Jim and his mom return home from the
vet with their cat Molly after her surgery, Jim
asks, “Why did we keep Molly from having
kittens? I like kittens!” In this delightfully
illustrated imagined journey into the future,
Jim's mom shows the many ways that Mollys'
and her kittens' multiplying would change
their lives --- and not for the better. Cats and
kittens were in every nook and cranny. (You
will love the illustrations). And after trying
to get homes for the cats & kittens, Jim realized there were far more cats than homes. He
learned that spaying and neutering is the way
to go.
This is the story of puppy mill dog #241. She
has very little hair. She has never known
exercise, companionship, decent care or even
grass under her feet. Just a cage stacked with
all the other cages. She is rescued and taken
to a warm, secure foster home where she is
named Dakota. Terrified at first, she learns to
love and trust. Eventually she gets a forever
home with a sick girl named Sweetie – who
also has no hair. Dakota and Sweetie recover
together. And both grow hair.
Although the pet overpopulation crisis is a
very serious problem. This is a children's picture book that shows the importance of neutering in a very humorous way.

Anyone who watches Animal Planet has probably seen (or tried to watch) Animal Hoarders.
Recently we've had two cases in our own back yard. One case involved 63 cats. True to form,
they came from an unhealthy environment.
As you can imagine, receiving that many cats at HHS was a challenge. Each one had to be
examined by our veterinarian. Each one needed individual care. Each one needed food and
water. And each one needed to be made comfortable. Towards the end of that initial exam
process, one kitten startled everyone by leaping out of a cage and into the arms of Dr. Lynn
Wilson. The kitten was wheezing, extremely skinny & scruffy, had one eye hanging out of the
socket and the other eye also appeared to be damaged. Dr. Wilson was hooked.
Obviously “Weezie” needed a lot more medical care before she would be available for adoption.
So she was taken to Ravenwood Veterinary Clinic where she had an operation to remove the one
eye and was spayed (even though young, she was already pregnant). The remaining eye was permanently damaged in the center. And that Darth Vader-like wheezing was due to a permanent
nasal/respiratory problem. Everybody loved her. Dr. Wilson (surprise!) fostered her – but
couldn't adopt. HHS Humane Ed manager fostered her and couldn't give her up.
She now curls up with her older brother Tripod, runs & plays and loves absolutely everyone –
including her dog Murphy. She still sounds endearingly like Darth Vadar and also trills when
she purrs. A fabulous sound. Her name is now Trillian – named after another beautiful and
unique female. She is one awesome cat.
Hoarding
Animal hoarding is defined as a
compulsive need to possess and
control animals. It is not about
animal sheltering, rescue, or sanctuary, and should not be confused
with these legitimate efforts to
help animals.
It IS about satisfying an unhealthy
human need to accumulate animals and control them, and this
need supersedes the needs of the
animals involved.

Sam and Duke
Why We Work as Hard as We Do
About the same time a black and white,
miniature poodle mix puppy, Timmy, was
being born in a puppy mill in Jupiter, Florida
a family was receiving news confirming that
their son, Sam, had a rare, degenerative
disorder, metachromatic leukodystrophy
(MLD), that had a dismal prognosis including
a shortened life. Sometimes there are no
answers when we ask, “why?” we are given
the circumstances that imbue our lives, but
every once in a while we get an unexpected
reward along our journey. Who would have
guessed one of these rewards would have
been initiated by a traffic stop in Daytona
Beach.
Sam loves baseball. Rarely does he go
anywhere without a baseball cap of some
kind on his head. However, lately he had
begun to seem a little unsteady on his feet. A
Doctor’s visit and an x-ray chalked it up to a
tight Achilles tendon that he would grow out
of with time. Three years past and the
problems were becoming more numerous and
more serious. His own parents had to hug him
gently and lift him carefully to avoid mixing
pain with their expressions of love and
affection. Now Sam was falling all the time,
exhibiting an awkward stance, and walking
with his elbow perpetually bent. After further
x-rays, referrals, and visits to neurologists a
diagnosis was confirmed, Sam had MLD, a
rare genetic, degenerative disorder. Without
treatment, he would lose all control of his
muscles, become bedridden, and in a shorttime die. His only hope was an umbilical cord
stem cell transplant, which he received at
Duke Hospital approximately 2 years and 5
months ago to stop the progression of the
disease. There is no cure for MLD at this
time.
About the same time Sam was diagnosed with
MLD, Timmy was born in a puppy mill in
Jupiter, Florida; at least that’s what we
believe to be the case. For over three years he
lived in cramped, over-crowded quarters with
40 – 50 other breeding dogs, treated like
livestock not a pet, getting just enough food,
but little to no grooming, and towards the end
of his time in Jupiter, little care. When he
was finally rescued he was living with his
feces matting up his urine drenched coat.
When he and 40 other dogs in similar
condition were thrown into the back of a van
heading out of Jupiter, FL, bound for New
York, they could not have imagined just how
much their life was about to change. A
policeman in Daytona Beach pulled over the
van for erratic driving, looked inside, saw and
Sam and Duke by the pool
smelled 41 uncrated dogs and immediately
called animal control, who took the dogs to
the Halifax Humane Society. The driver was
arrested and taken to jail and the dogs were
examined, and “booked” into their own cells,
however, in these cells they would get baths,
plenty of food, and lots of love, at least until
the Judge ruled on the case.
When the Judge ruled, he determined that the
“owner” of the dogs could choose ten dogs to
keep out of the 41. The rest were placed into
the custody of the Humane Society, however,
if after a reasonable amount of time and if the
owner could get the proper permits in Jupiter,
the owner could come to the shelter and adopt
any of the remaining dogs. The HHS is
determined to get these dogs and puppies
adopted into loving, forever homes as soon as
possible to prevent them from having to go
back to the conditions in Jupiter.
Coincidently, Sam’s parents had finally
decided the family was ready to adopt a new
puppy; they had lost their dog in a tragic
accident many years earlier. Sam’s condition
was stable and he really was ready for a dog
of his own, and looking back, Timmy
desperately needed a boy of his own. The
family had been looking for about a month
and their search had brought them to HHS.
One of the staff noticed them looking at the
dogs in the small dog adoption kennel. They
had not seen any that had that special quality;
the quality that tells you that this is “your”
dog. The same staff member had Timmy out
the day before at an adoption event and
looking down at Sam in his motorized
wheelchair realized this amazing boy needed
to meet an amazing puppy. After speaking to
the family, the staff member was certain that
Timmy was the right dog for this family, and
when he saw the smile on the mother’s face
as Sam held Timmy in his lap, he was certain.
One of the HHS rules is that an adopter must
wait 24 hours to pick up their new family
member; and when the staff member went to
put Timmy into his kennel, the mother
informed him that the dog’s new name was
“Duke,” in honor of the Hospital where Sam
had the transplant that saved his life and
made it possible for him to have his new pet.
There is a saying that I first heard from a
member of the HHS Board of Directors, and
sense then from numerous staff and
volunteers, “Who really saves who?” In this
case, a stem cell transplant nearly three years
ago gave a little poodle mix his new name
and saved Sam’s life, and in turn, Sam and
his family were able to save Duke’s life, and
now they can all share that wondrous unconditional love found only between a dog and a
family.

Watching and participating in the free spay
and neuter clinic the last two weeks has been
eye opening to say the very least. More than
ever, the enormity of the challenge we are
facing with the cat overpopulation crisis
comes clearly into focus, a crisis overlooked
by the local area governments it seems, yet a
crisis that impacts the community in its
entirety. To see individuals from all parts of
the county spending time away from their
jobs trapping semi-wild cats in their neighborhood, no easy task, and then spending
their own money to get them shots in order to
qualify them for the surgery that will keep
them from breeding all summer, and producing dozens of kittens over just a few years.
One common thread has been the desire to
somehow stem the tide of kittens that occur
each summer.
The demand for this our free spay and neuter
program has been astounding, we received
over 1,000 calls asking to participate in this
clinic. Unfortunately, even calling back to tell
those callers that the spots are full for this
clinic has been impossible; the demand is so
urgent that some of the callers who have left
messages are calling to complain that we
have not returned their original calls. The
good news is that we are going to be able to
have a similar event in the near future thanks
to an anonymous donor and the goodwill of
many others.
We had an anonymous donor walk into the
front desk and holding the article from last
week in his hand told us he wanted to help.
He then asked how many animals he could
assist with a donation of $4,000. Now that is
a commitment to helping the community
address a serious problem while saving the
life of thousands of kittens at the same time.
We also have received hundreds of dollars in
donations from individuals and we are getting
help from fraternal organizations, the
American Legion, and the Port Orange Bob
Evans Restaurant as well.
Remember, you need only donate $25 and we
can spay or neuter a cat. So please help us

save these kittens by spaying and neutering

about whether someone can afford to pay for
the procedure themselves, the issue is about
doing the right thing as a community and
coming together to deal with a county-wide

Calendar of Events for 2011
“Cultivation & Cocktails”
Who doesn’t love a Muttini??? Be on the look out for various Cultivation Events throughout
2011. The purpose of these events is to reach beyond our normal donors and grow our support
system. The Halifax Humane Society Board Members will be involved in inviting community
members to these events who may not be as familiar with us and encourage them to get more
involved as a future sponsor, donor, or volunteer.
Island Party
Put on your Hawaiian shirts and lei’s. This June the HHS will be hosting an Island Party that
will take place from 6-10pm and it will be a traditional Caribbean evening. Date & location is
still being determined for the event at this time but check out our website and Facebook for
soon for additional information. The evening will include live music & dancing, festive food,
tiki torches, and of course island cocktails. Ambers Jewel has graciously donated a fabulous
menu for the event and Molto Bella will be donating a beautiful Spring piece for the silent auction. We will also have larger auction & raffle items available as well.
Food for Food Night at the Daytona Cubs
On April 29, 2011 & September 1, 2011 the Daytona Beach Cubs will partner with us and host
the Food for Food Night at the game. If you bring donated food to the game you will receive a

Barktoberfest 2010
What a wonderful event!!! Thank you to everyone who came out and participated in the event.
Because of you we were able to get 25 dogs & 6 cats adopted plus 25 dogs got micro chipped
that day. That is truly a measure for all the hard work that was put in from all areas to make this
so successful. We had wonderful sponsors, vendors, and volunteers who donated money, time,
and efforts. Among the favorite things to do were the canine contests. We had over 30 dogs
dressed in costumes ready to strutt there stuff on the “dogwalk.” A bounce house was available
to keep up with the kids after all the cotton candy, sno-cones, and cookies. Woody’s was on site
with delicious BBQ as well as other local vendors with a variety of dog –type products.
Participants were also able to work with the Obedience Club of Daytona Beach with the agility
course. If you weren’t able to make it out this year I hope you will make a point to do so next
October! It’s guaranteed to be better than ever!
Fur Ball Gala & Silent Auction
On December 9, 2010 the Halifax Humane Society hosted the Inaugural event at the Tavern and
Chapel in the Garden in Port Orange. The theme this year was “Tacky Holiday Sweater” and
everyone really got into the spirit of things! Guests enjoyed a lovely cocktail reception on the
Tavern Patio while listening to the Spruce Creek Jazz Band. The event then continued into the
Tavern for an amazing Live & Silent Auction which will consist of some really unique items.
Mel Stack, Board President, welcomed all the guests and Nancy Lohman gave a wonderful
speech on how important the Halifax Humane Society is to our community. Musical entertainment for the evening was provided by Every Other Thursday who were amazing! Thank you to
all of our wonderful sponsors, caterers, committee members, silent auction donors. Without
you, we wouldn’t have been able to raise over $26,000 for the shelter.
