River Recreation Festival kicks off July 3

GALLIPOLIS —The 51st annual River Recreation Festival
has undergone a slight change in 2016.
No worries, though. Most, if not all, of your favorite activities and events are still a part of the festival, but beginning
this year, the annual festival in Gallipolis City Park will be
July 3-4 each year in an effort to streamline the dates and
return it to a “hometown” style celebration.
“Over the years, we have heard feedback from local organizations and community members that the revolving dates and
length of the festival made it difficult for them to participate,”
said Gallia County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director
Michelle Miller. “For many years now, the dates were set to
incorporate the Fourth of July and the weekend. This meant
the length of the festival and the dates of specific events
changed with it.”
Miller said making the festival and two-day event — and on
the same dates each July — will be more of a benefit to local
organizations.
“To keep with the tradition of the festival revolving around
July 4, it was the decision of the committee to focus on July 4,
rather than schedule it for a specific weekend every year.”
The 2016 festival will kick off at noon July 3 with the opening ceremony, followed by the Gallipolis Junior Women’s Club
Talent show at 1 p.m. The rest of the afternoon is packed
with a wide variety of musical entertainment, including: the
percussion group Dynamic Mention at 2:30 p.m.; all-female
Bluegrass group Handsome Molly at 3:30 p.m. and Ariel Summertime Tuba at 4:30 p.m. The ever popular Wiener Dog race
will take place at 5 p.m.
The local band The Tangled Roots will kick off the festival’s
evening musical performances, followed by local band StillWater at 7:30 p.m. and national recording artist Morgan Myles at
9 p.m.
Monday, July 4 kicks off with the Baby Tot Contest at 9
a.m., followed by an afternoon of gospel music featuring Ordinary People, Neal Family, Victory Quartet, Open Rail, Singing
Shafers and The Raineys.
At 6:45 p.m., the Rotary Mile will start its way downtown,
followed by the annual Independence Day Parade at 7 p.m.
Immediately following the parade on the main stage, the Gallipolis River Recreation Festival Queen will be crowned. And
at 10 p.m., The Raineys will take the stage again to perform
during the annual fireworks display over the Ohio River.
Instead of having kids activities only one day, the Kid Zone
will be open both days for the 2016 festival — two days of
free activities and toy giveaways! The Kid Zone will operate
from 1-6 p.m. July 3 and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 4.
The Gallipolis River Recreation Festival welcomes new
local, inflatable company Pop Up Party Inflatables to the festival this year. Inflatables will open at noon July 3 and 10 a.m.
July 4. All-day inflatables wristbands will be $8 July 3 and $12
or four for $40 onJuly 4.

Seven vie for River Recreation Festival queen title

GALLIPOLIS — The 2016
River Recreation Festival
Queen’s Pageant will take place
Monday, July 4 at 8:30 p.m. on
the main stage. Prior to the
contest, at 7 p.m., the Independence Day Parade will travel
through downtown Gallipolis.
A total of seven young women
will vie for this year’s title.
The contestants are:
Adrianna Powell
Adrianna is the daughter of
Jeremy and Deanna Powell of
Bidwell. A student at River Valley High School, she is a member of the French Club and is
in the TAG (Talented and Gifted) program. She volunteers
her time student teaching at
Gallia Meigs Performing Arts and
helps at the Rio
Grande Daycare
Center. She is
active in 4-H and
a member of the
Teen Excel Competition Team
dancer at Gallia Meigs Performing Arts. Adrianna attends
Elizabeth Chapel Church. During her junior and senior years
at River Valley, she wants to
participate in College Credit
Plus. She plans to attend Ohio
University and major in pediatrics or ultrasound technology.

Myles headlines River Recreation Festival entertainment

GALLIPOLIS — The 51st
annual River Recreation Festival that will take place July
3-4 this year has managed to
schedule another impressive
entertainment lineup.
Along with local bands, the
main event hits the stage at 9
p.m. when national recording
artist Morgan Myles hits the
state just before the fireworks
rocket into the skies over the
Ohio River.
Here’s a look at the lineup:
Morgan Myles
July 3, 9 p.m.
Morgan Myles is originally
from Williamsport, Pa., and is
a recent graduate of Belmont
Curb College of Music Business. She went to Berklee College of Music in Boston for her
freshman year, then the urging
of Clay Bradley, the former vice
president of Sony’s A&R division, transferred to Belmont
where she earned her degree.
Now a resident of Nashville,
Tenn., Myles performs a blend
of country and soul music. She
writes songs about anything
that seems to her affect her life
in a raw manner that listeners
seem to relate with. It was her
first guitar teacher recognizing
her retro soulful sound who
exposed her to the late 60’s and
early 70’s that has made Myles
show so unique for her time.
Myles completed her first
solo record in 2009, writing
every song and promoting
it throughout Europe. Also
gaining community attention,
she began writing with many
successful songwriters. Soon
after she decided to strengthen
her performance abilities by
touring with Crystal Shawanda, CCMA’s 2009 best female
artist, along with opening for
Reba McEntire, and playing at
the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver. However, her most eyeopening moment was performing for U.S. troops departing
for Iraq at Camp Shelby, Miss.,
where she rediscovered the
power of music.
Having wrapped her tour,
BMI’s Mark Mason took a
great interest in Myles career
saying, “Myles is rare in the
sense of being the true trifecta
combining songwriting, singing and musical performance.”
She was featured in the Key
West Songwriter’s festivals,
BMI Buzz showcases, as well
as BMI Presents. Soon after
she was offered an opportunity
to record an alternative-rock
project at Blackbird Studios
with the legendary Vance Powell. Myles learned quickly that
this type of production complimented her voice and she went
on to record and produce her
own self-titled EP in 2013.
In March 2014, Myles was
the featured performer singing 10 of her original songs at
the historical Community Arts
Center with the Pennsylvania
Symphony Orchestra. Her
song, “Chains” was featured in
the documentary, “Music City
USA.” She was also given the
opportunity to perform her
song “Wicked” in the upcoming feature film, “The Dust
Storm.”
Myles has been represented
by Brad Paisley and Band Perry’s booking agent, Rob Beckham at WME. Beckham being
truly a fan has said, “What do
you get when you combine
Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin, Tina
Turner and Faith Hill? You get
Morgan Myles.” Beckham has
been steadily booking Myles
for a year now and has opened
for acts like Hank Williams
Jr., Rick Springfield, and the
biggest country music festivals
around the U.S. featuring acts
like Luke Bryan, Florida Geor-
gia Line and Blake Shelton.
Over a year ago, Sony A&R,
Duane Hobson, took a big
interest in Myles and introduced her to Rio who produced
and co-wrote her EP released
in January 2016. Hobson discovering her talent has said,
“The blend of country roots
with the soulful vocals of Morgan Myles makes this a unique
album. I’m excited to share this
music with fans – it’s a refreshing combination of elements
that is on the forefront of the
next big sound.”
Last September, Myles had
a first listen EP Party and
received great reviews from
the industry including Music
Row Magazine, Taste of Country, as well as CMT who has
decided to do an exclusive premiere of her new music video,
“Whiskey Dreaming.” The

The Tangled Roots

StillWater is a band that was
formed in 1992 by the brother
duo of Kevin and Kent Jolley.
Kevin, a guitar player and singer of immense skill, and Kent
driving the band with his pulsing bass lines and lead vocals,
have incorporated myriad influences into the band’s unique
sound. The brothers have
pulled from bluegrass, country
and rock to craft unique vocal
harmonies and approaches to
the StillWater sound.
The band’s early beginnings
were rooted in classic rock,
but the brothers decided to
broaden their musical scope
and incorporate some contemporary rock and heavy metal
music. StillWater added the
similarly experienced/influenced talents of dynamic and
hard-hitting BJ “Beej” Rocchi
piloting the ship behind the kit
and is now poised to move to
the future.
StillWater is currently working on new original material
to add to the set list and hope
to record and release the new
material in 2016-17.
The Tangled Roots

The Tangled Roots is the
area’s newest and liveliest
party band. They are the only
band in the area that features
a steel drum, giving a tropical
mix to their show. Whether
it’s a current smash hit, a classic reggae song, or a sweet
funk tune from the 70’s, The
Tangled Roots puts their own
spin on each and every tuning
influenced by different styles.

in their 43rd year, due to the
inspiration of Harvey Phillips.
Norman Bewley, one-time
professional colleague of Phillips, arranged all the Summer
Tuba Time music that includes
such favorites as “In the Good
‘Ole Summer Time,” “Take Me
Out to the Ballgame,” “Down
by the Riverside,” “When the
Saints Go Marching In,” “Little
Brown Jug” and many more.

Racine’s ‘Party in the Park’ back for 8th year

RACINE — As summer draws to a close along the
Ohio River, there is still some outdoor entertainment
to look forward to with Racine’s Party in the Park.
Now in its eighth year, the Party is always the second weekend in September in Star Mill Park. The
2016 three-day event will be held Sept. 8-10 and is
filled with music and entertainment and admission is
free.
The Party begins at 5 p.m. Thursday with amusement rides, craft and food vendors, an arcade and

Saturday at noon, the Crusin’ Saturday Night Car
Show begins its 12th year and features classic cars
from across the country. Hill’s Automotive will host the
Classic Car show on 3rd Street in downtown Racine,
adjacent to Party in the Park and the public is invited
to view the collected classics restored in all their luster.
Nearly 45 trophies are expected to be presented that
evening for a variety of categories.Registration for
entrants is opens at 1 p.m. Saturday. Judging will take
place between 2-5 p.m., with awards ceremonies to
follow. All proceeds from the show will benefit local
scholarship funds.

POMEROY — Those looking for fun along the Ohio
River can find it at the annual
Pomeroy Sternwheel River
Fest scheduled for Sept. 15-19
at the Riverfront in Pomeroy.
This year will include Morgan’s Raiders as part of a Civil
War re-enactment taking place
concurrently with the River
Fest.

feature concerts, events, merchandise and, of course, Sternwheels. The privately owned

Duck Derby.
At 6 p.m., guests can enjoy
a Captains/Crew Dinner and

Second ‘Peck Fest’ is July 22-23

GALLIPOLIS — Gallipolis Rotary Club
officials say the 2016 Rotary Mile for area
youth prior to the start of the Gallipolis
Fourth of July parade will be 6:30 p.m. July
4.
The Gallipolis Rotary Mile, in its 67th
year, started in 1949 and was known as the
Gil Dodds Mile. The race kept that name
through 1984 when it was changed to the
Gallipolis Rotary Mile.
The Rotary Mile is open to all youth up
through the age of high school graduation.
Runners do not have to be a Gallia county
resident to participate; however, runners
must be Gallia county residents to be eligible for a trophy given to first- and secondplace finishers in each division.
All participants must complete a registration form, to be signed by a parent/guardian. Registration forms can be obtained at
the Gallia County Chamber of Commerce
and Bossard Memorial Library prior to July
4, and at the Shake Shoppe on Second Avenue day of race. Runners will meet at the
Shake Shoppe on Second Avenue at 5:30
p.m. to obtain their race t-shirt and number,
as well as submit their registration form.
There is no entry fee for this race.
Members of the Gallipolis Rotary Club
encourage all area youth to participate in
this year’s Rotary Mile, an annual tradition
in Gallia County.

music fans don’t have to
travel two hours away to go
to a summer festival, with
Peck Fest returning for
its second year, July 22-23
at Kanawha River Campground.
Peck Fest is an outdoor
country music festival happening less than 10 miles
outside the city limits of
Point Pleasant. Last year,
the inaugural Peck Fest
brought in headliners Joe
Diffie and Rodney Atkins,
as well as Trailer Choir as
one of the popular opening
acts.
This year, festival organizer Garry Peck, has
booked headliners Chris
Janson and Kane Brown
with a host of local bands
from across the area and
beyond as the opening
acts, including Krista
Hughes, a contestant on
“The Voice” who was part
of Team Blake.
Janson is known for his
2015 hit “Buy Me a Boat”
and Brown is known for
the songs “Used to Love
You Sober” and “There
Goes My Everything,” with
his first EP released in
March after signing with
RCA Nashville.
Peck, who also owns
Kanawha River Campground, will be offering
campsites for those who
want to stay for the entire
weekend. In fact, Peck Fest
is meant to be its own selfsustaining city with camping facilities, restrooms
and concessions available

help with the planning. A

involved in the county. The
idea behind this is to help
the county grow as the festival grows.

‘Rhythm on the River’ series
begins June 24 in Pomeroy

POMEROY — The Pomeroy Blues
and Jazz Society announced the 17th
annual Rhythm on the River Summer
music series will commence June
24 at the Riverside Amphitheater in
downtown Pomeroy.
On five consequitive Friday’s
through July 22, music will begin at 8
p.m. for this free family friendly concert series on the banks of the Ohio
River in historic downtown Pomeroy.
The Rhythm on the River schedule is as follows:
June 24: Columbus natives Angela
Perley & the Howlin’ Moons begin
the summer music . The band has
been described as “armed with
electric guitars, swooning vocals,
and songs that split the difference
between rock and roll and dreamy
psychedelia” and was Rockin’ Roots
and Americana regional band on the
move 2014 International Songwriting
Competition winner.
July 1: Johnny Rawls returns to the
stage in Pomeroy. Rawls is a longtime
performer at the Big Bend Blues
Bash, an accomplished musician who
received acclaim by the 21st annual
Living Blues Awards Critics’ Poll for
the “Most Outstanding Blues Singer
2013” and “Best Blues Albums of the
Year 2013.” His busy schedule takes
him around the country and includes
performances abroad, with a stop in
Pomeroy for the annual “Blues Bash.”
July 8: The Mark May Band bring
their Texas-seasoned music to the
Ohio Valley. May is an Ohio native
and former frontman for Dickey Betts
and Great Southern, and he will be
belting out blues, rock and soul to
audiences along the river.
July 15: Enjoy juke joint blues,
roots rock and Americana with duo
Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack. Considered two of the most
respected songwriters in the genre,
they have become one of the most
favorite groups in the concert series.
July 22: Mac Arnold and Plate Full
of Blues will perform. Arnold has
been frontman or sideman for James
Brown, Muddy Waters, The Temptations, B.B. King, Bill Withers, Otis
Redding, Otis Spann and John Lee
Hooker to name a few.

Big Bend Blues Bash an

POMEROY — Once again, Pomeroy
will host the Big Bend Blues Bash against
the backdrop of the Ohio River.
The Bash is celebrating its 16th year of
the annual event, with dates scheduled
for July 29-30.
This years tentative lineup includes
Royal Southern Brotherhood, Albert
Castiglia, Chris O’Leary Band, the Gas
House Gorillas and the Steepwater Band.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday will be
available, along with weekend passes good
for both days. The Bash takes place rain or
shine with no refunds. Kids 12 and younger

beer, wine or frozen drinks, will be available
on site. Guests should bring a blanket or a
lawn chair.
