On behalf of the Farmersville Chamber of
Commerce, it is my pleasure to present to you the
2008/2009 Business Directory.
Within this directory you will find area businesses
who are interested in contributing their time and efforts
to the community of Farmersville.
Established in the 1900s, the Farmersville Chamber of
Commerce has steadily grown and continues to attract
area businesses interested in being part of our small town atmosphere.
With just under 100 members, the chamber offers you choices in products
and services that can help you in your day-to-day lives.
As this area continues to grow, the Chamber will grow as well, giving you
access to even more retail and service options within the town. We have a dedicated membership and board of directors who work closely with the city and
the Farmersville ISD to create a great quality of life that is rare in the world
today.
This directory was designed with you in mind, to put all the information
you need at your fingertips.
It is meant to make you aware of the businesses in your neighborhood that
have a proven, vested interested in guiding the success of this area. Many of
our members are involved in volunteer activities of the Chamber and give
their time and efforts to the community because they are interested in seeing
the area grow and prosper. Our board of directors gives selflessly to the community, working to promote commerce and develop community-wide events
that benefit both families and businesses.

City of Farmersville
Founded in 1849 as a settlement on the
Jefferson-McKinney Road, Farmersville
was named for the work done there.
The Yeary family and others from
Sugar Hill (located about two miles
northeast of the community) moved to
Farmersville after 1854. In 1855, Dr.
H.M. Markham, said to be Collin
County’s earliest physician, had a medical
practice in Farmersville.
Other community milestones include:
1856 – First Methodist Church established; 1859 – Land donated for public
square by William Gotcher; 1860s –
School opened; 1865 – First Baptist
Church founded.
The town was officially incorporated
on June 2, 1873, with John S. Rike serv-
ing as the first mayor. Two businesses
begun in Farmersville in the 1880s are
still doing business today – The
Farmersville Times and First Bank.
In the 1930s, Farmersville claimed the
“Onion Capital of North Texas” title,
shipping more than 1,000 carloads of
onions annually. One of the original
onion sheds has been restored and is a
community event pavilion near City Park.
Audie Murphy, the most decorated
American hero of WWII who became a
movie star after the war, was a resident of
Farmersville before he entered the service.
The community honors Murphy each
year with “Audie Murphy Day,” an event
recognizing not only Murphy but all local
veterans and service personnel. v

have toured his home several
times and would like to visit
with him while we watch the
boats float down the Potomac
River. I have often thought I
would like to go through all
the rooms in his house without being part of the tour. I
could then examine everything
to my satisfaction.

from East Texas State
University in 1988 and went
on to earn my Master’s degree
in 1992.
I have been married to Vernon
Johnson for 38 years. We have
three children (Sara, Michael,
Carrie) and one grandchild –

A:The one person in history
that I would like to meet
would be Benjamin Franklin.
He was not only a founding
father, but also a scientist,
writer, printer, inventor, and a
philosopher. He was an earlyday multi-tasker who was
respected for his integrity and
wisdom, and he could diffuse
tense situations using his wit
and humor.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN
THE FIELD OF EDUCATION?
It’s my first year as an administrator. I have spent the entire
twelve years of my teaching
career as an eighth grade U.S.
history teacher in the Little
Elm ISD.
I have a Bachelors of Art from
the University of North Texas,
and a Masters in Education
from TWU, in Denton.
My wife, Faye, and I have been
married for more than thirty
years. We have an adult son,
Chris, who lives and works in
Lewisville. I come from a very
large family. I am the oldest of
nine children. Including inlaws, there are at least twelve
teachers in my family. I guess
it was inevitable that I would
one day become an educator. I
love being at the junior high
school because these are the
kids I can relate to, and the
ones that keep me young.

Lincoln because I admire his
Farmersville Independent School District
persistence and strong leadership abilities. He was able to
keep the country from falling
apart during one of the most
difficult times in our nation's
history. He also showed a great
deal of determination in his
political career, refusing to give
up and continuing to run for
elected office despite several
defeats.

JUSTICE OF THE PEACE
The Justice of the Peace’s primary function is to hold civil
court for both justice and small
claims as quickly and judiciously
as possible to relieve the caseload
of the higher courts.
In addition to these functions
the court has criminal jurisdiction of such cases as bad checks,
truancy, some traffic offenses,
issue peace bonds and hold hearings on the same.
The Justice of the Peace

Chamber donates $3,000 for marketing campaign for city
Though the Farmersville Chamber of
Commerce holds many community events to
further Chamber goals, it has also contributed considerable funding to the
Farmersville marketing campaign.
The campaign, which involved developing
a new logo for the city and advertising in several different publications, kicked off in
2007.
According to Mayor Don Smith, the new
logo represents an important first step in creating a new visual identity for Farmersville
that will carry the city through the next
decade.
“As a small community rich with history,
Farmersville is looking toward a future of
commercial growth and residential revitalization,” said Smith, who is also head of the
branding committee. “A new identity was
necessary to communicate this new direction
and to convey a point of difference between
Farmersville and other historical small cities
in Texas.”
The goal of the branding committee was
to find a new logo that was unique to
Farmersville, according to Adah Leah Wolf,
Main Street manager and branding committee member. The newly created logo conveys
the emotional and historic aspects of
Farmersville’s personality while reinforcing
the tagline “Discover a Texas Treasure.” (The
tagline was previously adopted by the City
Council in 2006.)
“When you see the new logo, you know
exactly where you are,” Wolf said. “We
believe the new logo is a strong visual representation of the town’s heritage of family values and community connections.”
The Farmersville Economic Development
Corp. (4A), the Farmersville Community
Development Corp. (4B), and the city have
also joined the efforts of the Chamber of
Commerce to help fund the marketing campaign.
“Our goal in all of this is to bring in new
business and tax revenues – and ultimately,
to put Farmersville on the map as the best
place to live and grow in Collin County,”
Smith said.
The total requested marketing budget for
2008-’09 is $20,000.
Along with developing a new logo, a goal
of the marketing campaign is “to generate
positive, consistent exposure for the city of
Farmersville and the new brand.”
The team plans to do so by raising the
awareness about Farmersville, getting people
to visit the Web site and encouraging people
to come out to Farmersville to visit.
Advertising in the Texas Events Calendar;
Inside Collin County; C&S Media, Inc.’s The
Farmersville Times; The Dallas Morning News;
and Star Community Newspapers including
The McKinney Courier-Gazette will support
the team’s efforts to promote the city.
The marketing campaign is also utilizing
Marketwire and CMT Marketing to distribute press releases and handle marketing consulting as well as using Helix Broadband to
renovate the city’s Web site.
