As I write this the temperature is slowly creeping up into the late 20’s and by the end of the week will be into the early 30’s. To some this is not so pleasing so let’s watch out for those who are vulnerable and help where we can…….and remember, keep hydrated! In this double edition we are updated with fund raising achievements from events over the last month, along with up coming events over the summer break. Also there are a couple of jobs being advertised within the parish so please look and consider to see if you can help to fill the vacancies. I wish you a fun filled and peaceful summer and will see you in September. Ruth The deadline for the September edition is 15th August Please send all contributions, preferably by email to:[email protected] By post to: The Rectory Attn: The Editor Breech Lane Walton-on-the-Hill KT20 7SD All views expressed are those of the individual authors and are not necessarily those of St Peter’s or Christchurch. Many parishioners and villagers are grateful for the regular time keeping provided by St Peters Church Clock. Few however will be aware that this is not an automatic clock and that it relies on a small team of volunteers to wind it manually, it takes just a few minutes. The current team are a couple of volunteers short and one or two of the remainder would appreciate a younger pair of legs to take over from them. Ideally we would like to have 12 in our team so that each one has one month a year to wind the clock on a weekly basis. If you would like to join the Guild of St Peters Clock Winders please e-mail [email protected] or call him on 01737 812871. from St Peter’s The good news at last is that we are finally making progress in several directions. 1.The PCC met with the Archdeacon and Rural Dean on Monday June 22nd and had a long discussion on the Statement of Need for the Parish. The final document is being revised as I write by Moya and Anne Oliphant to present to the PCC at its Section 11 meeting on Monday 29th June. By the time you reach this the final (fifth) version should have been agreed and sent to the Archdeacon. 29th June happens to be St. Peter’s Day, so hopefully this will be a propitious date for our meeting. 2. At the Section 11 meeting we also have to decide whether we then advertise the position across the country or let it just appear on the diocesan website. The Archdeacon’s advice is not to spend at least £800 on a Church times advert, as other Diocesan House for Duty vacancies have received no replies from other dioceses. 3. We then have to decide whether there will be a competitive interview, or to allow the Archdeacon, on behalf of the Bishop to propose a candidate to us. The good news is that the Archdeacon believes that he has candidate(s) who have already shown interest, who would be acceptable and who could be proposed, thereby speeding up the process. 4. The PCC also has to agree its two members of the selection panel. 5. The necessary paperwork to make St.Peter’s part of a United Benefice with St. Martin’s Epsom is also progressing. It has been made clear that the Rectory, although technically held by the Guildford Diocesan Board of Finance for Diocesan purposes, shall be used solely for ministry in the parish of Walton-on- the- Hill. It has been agreed with the Archdeacon that the vicar of St. Martin’s, Nick Parish, as prospective incumbent of the new benefice, will be one member of the interviewing panel, along with two members of our parish and two representatives of the diocese. The interviews will be allowed to take place before the final United Benefice papers are signed to speed up the whole process of appointing a new priest. 6. The work on the roof of the church should start in early September and hopefully be completed by the end of November. The contract is in the process of being drawn up and I have a site meeting with the architect and builders on July 6th. 7. There are many things we can do to be getting the Rectory ready for a new priest. I hope to arrange some work parties, available to all ages and sexes to finish clearing the garden, cleaning the house and doing early stages of preparation for repainting so that we can have everything done in time. We will have to decide whether to employ someone to do the final internal repainting which comes as a cost to the parish. I hope at last we are making progress and we can hope to have a new priest appointed and in the Rectory for Advent or at least by Christmas. God bless us all. Always known as Kitty, a fall in child- hood when the family lived in the Far East broke bones in her spine from which she never really recovered. Unable to pursue a career, she turned her hand to writing and from the 1920's onwards she produced a number of romantic novels, many of which are still in print today. After her parents died, Kitty managed to live on the royalties from her books, but her income was always uncertain and she really lived from hand to mouth. Kitty was a loyal member of her local church and when it was decided to hold a flower festival she wanted to play her part. She knew she couldn't afford a pot plant or even a bunch of flowers so at her local florist she selected one special flower and went to the church with her offering. "Is that all?" said the lady who was the receiver of gifts. At that precise moment another helper appeared and exclaimed "That is the very one I need to place at the centre of my display. It will have pride of place". Human nature doesn't change down the years. There are those who criticise and those who encourage. Our Lord knew this only too well. In John's Gospel we have the story of Mary who poured expensive perfume over Jesus's feet and was criticised by one of the disciples for wasting money that could have been spent on the poor. But Jesus commended her for her action. And Luke tells the story of the poor widow who could only afford a small contribution to the Temple treasury. Jesus gave encouragement to those who appeared to give only a little. In life there are encouragers and others who criticise. Jesus was a great encourager. He once said "Go then and do likewise" Mary Rady Although neither church was able to make door to door collections for Christian Aid this year, Christ church coffee drop in during May raised £157.50 for Christian Aid. Jill Renshaw ********************************************************************************************** Seniors club meets on the first Thursday of the month at the Riddell Hall for an afternoon of entertainment followed by tea and homemade cakes. There are two outings a year. The Spring outing is usually an afternoon visit to a garden followed by tea. The July outing is a full day including lunch. Last year it was a river boat trip from Runnymede to Windsor. New members are most welcome, and the only requirement is that they live, or have lived in Walton-on-the-Hill. For further information please contact Sally Hough on 01737 812374. Walton on the Hill WI The Woman's Institute is celebrating it's 100th year and to mark the occasion the Queen held a garden party at Buckingham Palace and a big meeting at The Albert Hall. At our June meeting, Maggie Parkinson... as our representative, went to both events and told us how her day went at each one. On the day of the garden party unfortunately it was extremely windy and several hats were to be seen flying around the garden. The Queen was accompanied by Sophie Wessex and Camilla and they chatted amongst the ladies before an excellent tea was served. The day at The Albert Hall was packed with many members and several speakers entertained The Queen, who was accompanied on this occasion by Sophie again, and Princess Anne, and of course, all the ladies who had travelled far and wide to be there. Maggie said she has never heard JERUSAUM sung with such gusto at both events and added, it was a most unforgettable couple of days (although very tiring)! Our speaker this month was Eileen Ratcliffe, who was born with many disabilities which she has bravely born for many years, but her life changed drastically 7 1/2 years ago when she was given "ICKULUS" a golden Labrador, a Canine Assistance Dog. The scheme was started 25 years ago with only 3 dogs... there are now 300! The selection process and training takes 18/24 months. They have to be "controlled toilet" trained and know how to behave in shops and public transport and handle loud noises etc. Ickulus helps Eileen with all the household chores, stripping the bed, answering the phone and the front door, he undresses her and fetches her inhaler, walking stick, handbag and anything else she requires. He receives "treats" such as1/2 teaspoon of Manuka honey a day, and pieces of raw broccoli and carrots which, apparently, help to clean his teeth!! He also must have a trip to the park every day to exercise." Eileen and Nickulus have been together to meet the Queen and Prince Harry. I do believe Nickulus enjoyed our meeting every bit as much as we all did but he did not partake in the tea which followed!!!!! Zena Hodgkison TWOAT- Tadworth & Walton Overseas Aid Trust The two TWOAT Sponsored Walks were a great success both financially and in having the largest number of participating walkers. Around £2,000 was raised to help TWOAT projects. (see full report below). TWOAT has been getting news of the plight of their school project in Nepal where the school building is now unsafe in parts and around half the homes of the villagers can no longer be occupied. An appeal was launched and has had a magnificent response with the total donations now exceeding £3,000. The money TWOAT has already sent has enabled the village to buy tarpaulins/tents for those who have lost their homes and replacement food for those who lost their stocks when their homes collapsed. TWOAT has had a number of email reports from Sherpa Rudra who is their contact in the village and details from these are being published on their web site WWW.TWOAT.ORG This site also describes how you can contribute to the appeal. Estimates for the full re-building and repair costs for the school are not available yet as no doubt the local resources for construction are having many calls on them to deal with this huge natural catastrophe. The next TWOAT event will be selling teas and cakes in Keith and Elizabeth Lewis’ garden at 41 Shelvers Way on July 19th 2 – 5.30pm when it is open as part of the National Garden Scheme (admission £3.50). Please contact Mike Fox at TWOAT on (350452) if you can provide cakes to sell or you can help on the day. TWOAT is also pleased to announce that Sunday Sept 13th has been fixed as the date for this year’s Spit Roast event in Walton. More details will be published on the web site nearer the time. Mike Fox THANK YOU VERY MUCH! The two sponsored walks this year on behalf of TWOAT are expected to produce the very useful sum of about £1900. When Gift Aid is added, this could bring the total to well over £2000! This was achieved by 43 walkers (including a couple who came on both walks having enjoyed the first one so much ) and shows the generosity of the sponsors - so encouraging in these harder financial times. We are extremely grateful to those who sponsored the walkers and, of course, to the walkers, some of whom sponsored themselves. The circular walks took place on 22nd and 30th May May and the weather on both days was ‘near perfect’. They started from Chipstead Public Car Park, at the side of the Chipstead Rugby Club, and followed a route across the Downs to the “Battle of Britain” aerodrome at Kenley. On the way there, the walkers visited the ancient Church of Chaldon with its 12 th Century wall painting depicting Heaven and Hell and then went on to walk went through “Happy Valley”, a delightful stretch of countryside. At Kenley aerodrome, details were given of Kenley’s involvement in the “Battle of Britain” and its subsequent activities when it was concerned with aerial strikes against targets in occupied France. Some of its famous pilots were recalled. All this very appropriately as this year is the 75th anniversary of “The Battle”. Jean Clew, our local historian, helped to make the walk particularly interesting with her stories of times past in the areas walked through. Most walkers did the whole distance but a few took the opportunity to do shorter stretches by using the ‘lift service’ kindly provided by TWOAT volunteers back to the starting point from three en-route stopping places. The first stopping place was “ Starbucks” on the A23 near Hooley where a tasty cup of coffee/tea/chocolate was enjoyed. The next stop was at the “Fox” near Caterham where a good lunch was provided by for those who chose not to bring their own picnic and the last one was on Farthing Down where a TWOAT volunteer provided some soft drinks for those who felt sufficiently thirsty. Of course, the real beneficiaries of the walks are the many people we help through support of projects in the poorer and poorest countries of the world. The children whose health and education are improved, the adults who are striving to eke out a living in poverty we sometimes can’t even begin to imagine, the elderly whose vulnerability is lessened. They would say, “ thank you” even more heartily than we do! John Allinson ( 01737 213347 ) Open Group The Bingham's glorious garden was the perfect setting for a Midsummer 'Strawberry Soirée'. The weather was kind, and warmer than preceding evenings, although the temperature could have been a little higher, after dusk. Pauline Shaw's renowned 'light-as-afeather' scones with strawberry conserve and clotted cream, topped with sweet, English strawberries, were consumed with enthusiasm, even by those 'counting the calories'! For the more abstemious, bowls piled high with perfectly ripened strawberries, with or without a little shortbread and pink 'fizz' were tempting. Plants were exchanged, horticultural knowledge shared while certain 'bring and buy items' provided a talking point..... not that Open Group meetings are lacking in chat or conversation! In summary, a pleasant June evening was had by all and MANY THANKS are due to Maggie and Paul Bingham for their welcome and hospitality. We are very grateful, also, to Gwyneth and Simon Kastell, who kindly opened their gem of a garden in Walton, during the 'Gardener's Delight' weekend, in June. Teas and cakes were served in aid of this year's Open Group project, 'Hearing Dogs for Deaf People', raising a brilliant £200. THANK YOU Gwyneth and Simon and all those who made cakes and / or helped on the day. Open Group will be taking a break in July. We are planning to hold the Annual Gourmet Barbecue, in the second half of August, venue and date to be confirmed at time of going to print. If you would like to join us, please contact Norma on 812639 or Mo, on 813834 or [email protected], for information and tickets. £15 per person. Please bring drinks of your choice. Proceeds towards 'Hearing Dogs for Deaf People'. Please note, monthly meetings will recommence on TUESDAY 8th SEPTEMBER. New members welcome. ************************************************************************************************ We had a very successful coffee morning on June 6th in our garden. The weather was kind. Bright and warm. We had such good support (as usual) with lots of friends coming to spend their money on refreshments, raffle and bring and buy. We also had friends from The Guild for tea on the following Wednesday, again a lovely day but a bit windy. With their donation we made a fantastic £525 to buy treats for patients at The Oaks Centre, RM. MANY thanks to everyone who was part of these events. Norma 812639. Community News Gatton Community Theatre’s Summer Production Pippa's Progress: A Pilgrim’s Journey to Heaven What if John Bunyan were to write Pilgrim’s Progress today? Times have changed since John Bunyan wrote his classic Pilgrim’s Progress, telling of Pilgrim’s journey up Hill Difficult and through the Slough of Despond to the Celestial City. Yet people in their millions still seek meaning in their lives and speak of journeying towards a goal. Everyone on earth seeks a heaven. Adapted into a contemporary new play by Gatton Community Theatre’s artistic director, Anna Thompson, from the book by Simon Parke, Pippa’s Progress will follow the journey of Pippa, a 21st-century Pilgrim. This moving and modern-day story will follow the original’s premise of a pilgrim’s journey to heaven, but this time through the trials and temptations of our secularised, multi-cultural society. It is a riveting story of spiritual journeying in the 21st century, full of modern monsters, comedy and grace - all brought to life by Gatton Community Theatre in a promenade production around in the beautiful parkland of Gatton Park, Reigate. Performances will take place during July on: Weds 15th, Thurs 16th Fri 17th, Sun 19th (sign language interpreted performance), Tues 21st, Weds 22nd, Thurs 23rd, Fri 24th and Sat 25th, all at 7.30 pm. Tickets are priced at Adults £12, children £8, family ticket £30, group discounts for 10+ tickets are available. Six buggy seats are available at each performance, but these must be booked in advance. For tickets go to www.gattoncommunitytheatre.org.uk/tickets or tel: 0333 666 3366. Booking fees apply. The ground may be uneven in places; appropriate footwear is advised. See website for further information www.gattoncommunitytheatre.org.uk Gatton Community Theatre is a registered charity that exists to create large scale theatre events by and for communities in East Surrey. It specialises in creating for audiences unusual and innovative theatre events and the use of unusual or unexpected venues plays a key part in Gatton Community Theatre productions. A strong moral or spiritual theme or the promotion of a spirit of forgiveness and love remain key objectives and at the heart of the company’s productions. Initially started as an initiative of the Parish of Merstham and Gatton, though now an independent organisation, GCT continues to maintain strong links with the Merstham and Gatton Team Ministry. Many participants continue to come from churches all over the Reigate Deanery and beyond.
