Il-Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu, bl-appoġġ bla limitu tal-abitanti, u mgħejjun moralment u finanzjarjament minn entitajiet statali u dawk l-aktar privati fosthom dawk lokali, iħares ‘il quddiem għall-edizzjoni oħra fejn il-kultura, l-istorja rikka u l-wirjiet ta’ kwalita jkunu abbundanti, fejn ittradizzjonijiet lokali Maltin jerġgħu għal darb’oħra jingħataw il-ħajja għall-benefiċċju tal-Maltin u lgost tal-barranin li jżuruna. It is with earnest that we await the fifth consecutive Birgufest after the successes of the last years. The Birgu Local Council, backed by the uncontested support of the local population, and assisted morally and financially by state and private entities, is looking forward to another edition where culture, history and pageantry is abundant and local Maltese traditions are re-lived for the benefit of the foreign visitor to Malta and Birgu. Waqt li kull sena nippruvaw inkunu innovattivi f’xi qasam li nippreżentaw, ir-residenti din is-sena, bl-inizjattiva tal-Kunsill Lokali, qed jippruvaw jidħlu għal sfida unika. Għall-Birgufest 2010 irridu li l-isem tal-Belt Marittima u Storika - il-Belt Vittoriosa jidħol fil-Guinness Book of World Records għaliex fid-9 ta’ Ottubru se jintfew id-dwal tat-toroq u minflok iridu jinxtegħlu aktar minn 10,000 xemgħa fil-qalba tal-Birgu. As we strive to be innovative every year in what we present, the locals this year, spearheaded by the Local Council, aim for a particular achievement. The challenge ahead of us during Birgufest 2010 is to register our name in the Guinness Book of World Records. We aim to switch off the street lights and instead light 10,000 candles spread around the city core. Ingħaqdu magħna f’din l-isfida. L-ambizzjoni tal-Kunsill u r-residenti – nittamaw li t-temp ikun ħanin magħna – hija li noffru lil min iżurna dimensjoni kulturali ġdida, sfida permezz tal-Birgu by Candlelight, varjeta ta’ attivitajiet u attrazzjonijiet, u fuq kollox esperjenza li ma tintesiex fil-Birgu u f’Malta. Join us in this feat. The ambition of the Council and the residents – hoping Mother Nature will be on our side – will be to offer visitors to Birgu a new cultural dimension, the ‘Birgu by Candlelight’ challenge, a variety of activities and attractions and above all, an unforgettable experience in Birgu and in Malta. Dak kollu li ser isir matul dawn it-tlett ijiem ta’ bejn it-tmienja u l-għaxra ta’ Ottubru huwa kollhu frott ix-xogħol kollettiv u ta’ dan ħaqqhom grazzi kbira dawk kollha li għal dawn l-aħħar xhur ħadmu flimkien għal skop waħdieni – “IlBirgufest 2010 jibqa’ fuq fomm kulħadd”. The proceeding during the 8th to the 10th October is the result of a collective effort, thanks to the innumerable volunteers who, during the last months had a common aim – “Birgufest 2010 will remain for a long time the talk of the town”. Kunsill Lokali Birgu Birgu Local Council 7 8 Kunsill Lokali Birgu Birgu Local Council THE ART OF LIVING BEAUTIFUL photography - www.patrickjfenech.com What’s Your Fascination... Xenetti Dramatiżżati Re-enectment L-Armerija tal-Kavallieri The Knights Armoury Fi żmien li l-Kavallieri ta’ San Ġwann ħakmu ‘l Malta kien hawn it-theddida kontinwa ta’ ħbit mill-Mislem. Dawn mhux darba u tnejn ġew biex serqu u ħadu magħhom f’artijiet imbegħda l-abitanti ta’ dawn ilGżejjer. Hawn ma ninsewx meta l-Mislem ħabat għal dawn il-gżejjer f’dak li llum baqa’ magħruf bħala lAssedju l-Kbir tal-1565. Biex jiddefendu ruħhom ilMaltin għamlu użu minn armi u armamenti li minkejja s-sempliċita tagħhom kienu effikaċi u sa ċertu punt kien hemm xebh għall-armamentI li jintużaw illum. Fosta dawn insemmu li kellhom l-isbandola. Arma li saħansittra msemmija fi żmien Kristu. L-arkibus (blIngliż Musket). Din daħlet Malta min-naħa tal-Lvant. Tista’ tgħid żammet l-istess stil ħlief għad-differenza li l-kanna kienet tkun twila jew qasira. Itwal ma’ tkun kienet aktar tqila imma l-balla twassal aktar. Insemmu l-hand grenades. Moħħna jiġri fuq it-Tieni Gwerra pero ta’ min wieħed jgħid li dawn kienu jintużaw f’dawk iż-żminijiet ukoll. Il-qaws - Fi ġranet ta’ xita hija xi ħaġa ovvja li l-arkibus ma setax jintuża għax il-porvli kien jixxarrab u ma jaqbadx. Allura kien jintuża l-qaws. Dan kien jispara vleġeġ qosra li kienu jaslu diversi metri bogħod u saħansitra jinfdu l-azzar tal-korazzi. Kien hemm ukoll ċrieki miksija bil-qanneb u żift li kienu jagħtuhom in-nar u jwaddbuhom fuq l-għadu minn fuq is-swar. Dawn huma biss ftit mill-munizzjon li kellhom dawk iż-żminijiet. Kif taraw minkejja s-sempliċita tagħhom kellhom sew biex jiddefendu ruħhom u Alla ħares ma kienx hekk għax bissaħħa t’hekk intrebaħ assedju kiefer bħal dak li kien tal-1565 In the days when the Knights of St John ruled over Malta, there was continuous threat of invasion from the enemy, mostly the Turks. They invaded our shores quite often, taking with them to far away lands, inhabitants of these islands. Noteworthy is the Great Siege of 1565 which remained known to these days. To defend themselves against the enemy, the local inhabitants aided by the Knights developed weapons which in spite being simple were very effective. Most weapons today have a resemblance to the weapons used during that time. The sling, which was also mentioned during the time of Christ, was still used during the time of the siege. This was brought to Malta by the travellers from the East. Its design remained the same, except for the barrel, which was either longer or shorter, depending on the requirements. The longer it was, the better the aim, but the weapon became heavier. When we mention hand grenades, our minds will probably go back to the Second World War. But, these were also used during the time of the Siege. When it was rainy, firing a musket was close to impossible, therefore bows and arrows were used instead. The arrows were so powerful they could even penetrate the enemy’s armor. There were also Fire Hoops; metal circles covered with hemp and tar, put on fire and thrown over the enemy. These are only a few of the items from the arsenal which were used at the time. They were very simple weapons, but yet very effective when it came for these people to defend themselves. Were it not, the Great Siege of 1565 would never have been won, leaving Malta and the rest of Europe at the mercy of the Ottoman Empire (This is because Malta is found in the center of the Mediterranean, good for restocking and refueling ships during a war when one is travelling long distances). Kunsill Lokali Birgu Birgu Local Council 11 Esebizzjoni Exhibition L-Organizzazzjoni ‘Dogs Trust’ għat-tieni sena konsekuttiva qed jipparteċipaw fil-Birgu Fest u hekk it-tfal li jkunu preżenti jistgħu jitkellmu mal-organizzaturi fuq il-bżonn li wieħed ikun responsabbli meta jkollu kelb. Huma se jkunu qed jattendu l-Ġimgħa 8 ta’Ottubru wara stedina oħra li saritilhom. Fl-Ingilterra, d-Dog Trust hija soċjeta filantropika ta’ karita li bdiet b’fergħa f’Malta f’Ġunju tal-2009 bi pjan ta’ ħames snin biex tippromwovi l-fatt li sid ikun responsabbli tal-kelb tiegħu b’żewġ manjieri mportanti. Il-Manager responsabbli mill-pubbliċita tagħhom, Sarah Decesare tgħid li l-preżenza tagħhom f’Malta hi marbuta mal-qasam Edukattiv. Kellhom Uffiċjal Edukattiv li fl-aħħar sena żar l-iskejjel statali u kellem madwar 8,000 student dwar it-temi – ‘Kif tkun sigur bil-kelb’ u ‘x’jeħtieġ il-kelb’. Dog Trust issa għandha Uffiċjal Edukattiv ġdid li se tieħu gost tintroduċih ma’ dawk li se jattendu l-Birgu Fest din is-sena. It-tfal jintqalilhom kif jieħdu kura b’responsabbilta tal-annimali u jiltaqgħu personalment miegħu. L-għaqda tikkonċentra wkoll fuq qasam ieħor talproġett tagħha. Se tniedi kampanji b’offerti ta’ sussidji għal min irid isewwi u jinserixxi ċippa fil-klieb. The organisors will be taking part on Friday 8th October following an invitation extended to them. In UK, the Dog Trust is considered as a charitable institution that set up its Malta branch in June 2009. It has a five year plan on ways to promote the responsible way how a dog owner can handle his pet in two different methods. Their local publicity manager, Sarah Decesare says that their presence in Malta is an educational one. Their Education Officer has visited all state schools and spoke to an estimated 8000 students on the themes – ‘What a dog needs’ and ‘How to feel secure with your dog’. Dog Trust now has a new Education Officer which they will be introducing to those attending the Birgufest this year. Children present will be told about their responsibility towards their dog and would avail of the opportunity to meet personally with the Officer. The Trust has another objective. It will be launching a campaign to subsidise the neutering of dogs and insertion of a microchip. The beneficiaries will be those receiving state social benefits in Malta and Gozo and also those who work in industrial estates and have dogs roaming about in their properties. Hunters and farmers too can benefit from the scheme. A team from the local Trust will be visiting localities to neuter dogs and insert the microchip and will monitor the health of the animals brought to them for check ups. Those interested in this scheme may contact by phone the Trust on 777 111 00 and verification on their eligibility to benefit from the scheme will be made. During the Birgufest, the team will be in Birgu to talk with those who need assistance, they will reply to questions and give advice to those who seek their help and will also promote their new initiative. On behalf of the Captain, the Director and the international crew of the MV Logos Hope, it is my pleasure to announce the first visit of the Logos Hope to Valletta Harbour. L-aħħar li kien ġie l-vapur l-ieħor tagħna, il-Logos II, kellu suċċess kbir u diversi nies telgħu fuqu. Minn dak iż-żmien kienu bosta dawk li stennew li terġa’ ssir żjara oħra millvapur. L-aħħar ħdax-il xahar konna fil-Karibew u issa ninsabu fi triqtna lejn il-Punent tal-Afrika. Peress li bosta ħbieb tagħna f’Malta kienu jistaqsuna meta se nirritornaw u bħalissa ninsabu fi triqtna lejn in-naħat ta’ Malta ħassejna li hija opportunita tajba li niġu, iktar u iktar li fl-istess żmien sirna nafu li se jkun hemm attivita tal-massa u popolari filBirgu. Hekk nittamaw li biż-żjara tagħna mhux biss naqtgħu x-xewqa tal-poplu li ilu jistenniena, imma li ngħinu biex jitkabbru l-attivitajiet li jkunu qed isiru fil-belt tal-Birgu f’dawk il-ġranet. The last visit of our sister ship, Logos II attracted many visitors on board and was a very successful visit. Many people have eagerly awaited the return of the ship since then. We have spent the last eleven months in the Carribean and now we are enroute to West Africa. We have been informed by friends in Malta about inquiries from Maltese when our ships are calling at port again and we believe that once we are on our way to Africa, we can call at your Island, especially once we got to know that during the same time, in the city of Birgu there will be a very popular activity. We hope that our presence will not only quench the thirst by so many to visit us again, but will also enhance the festivities that will be going on in Birgu. Il-vapuri huma magħrufa għall-fieri tal-kotba abbord, saru għal dan il-għan 500 żjara f’portijiet f’150 pajjiż differenti u żaruna mad-39 miljun persuna abbord. Saru għotjiet lill-kulleġġi, universitajiet, libreriji u knejjes f’pajjiżi li qed jiżviluppaw u dan ħalla impatt qawwi. U rridu li l-poplu Malti ukoll igawdi minn din l-offerta u roħs fil-prezzijiet speċjalment fuq kotba li jistgħu jintużaw meta dalwaqt tiftaħ mill-ġdid l-iskola. Known for their floating book fairs, the ships have visited over 500 ports in more than 150 nations, welcoming over 39 million people on board. Visitors can select from over 7,500 titles, covering a wide range of subjects and available at a fraction of their value. Grants of books to schools, libraries, colleges, churches and universities in developing countries have made a positive impact. And we want the people of Malta also to share from the reduced prices we offer now that school is about to begin. Logos Hope huwa l-ikbar u l-iktar vapur ġdid fil-flotta tagħna. Inxtara fl-2004 u sar ħafna xogħol biex ġie mibdul minn vapur tal-passiġġieri u l-vetturi għal vapur skond ilħtieġa tal-organizzazzjoni tagħna. Logos Hope is the newest and biggest ship in our fleet. After buying her in 2004 much work was done to convert her from a vehicle and passenger ferry into the ship needed for this organization. After redelivery from the shipyard, Logos Hope entered a final period of outfitting before beginning full time service around the world in February 2009. It was on the initiative of Richard Jackson late in the sixties that enticed his son Edmond to embark on a musical career. It was around 1987 that Edmond, the force behind the Band, was invited to take part in a competition in Erice, Italy. The competition was named Zampagna d’Oro. Now this folklore group is being invited on a regular basis to play during cultural activities, especially those organized by Local Councils in Malta and Gozo and also by the Council of Culture and the Arts and by the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs. The Birgu Local Council has been inviting the Band on several occasions during activities it organized such as the festival of ‘Traditional Maltese Games’, during ‘Birgufest’ and the ‘Birgu by Candlelight’ festival which is held every October. The Jackson’s Pipe Band represented Birgu as part of the Oralities Project of the European Union in several countries members of this Project. The Group does not limit itself to please the public, but also invites them to participate with them. In between one tune and another, they show the public how the traditional instruments are built and the material they are made of. The Band is able to play popular melodies of the past, apart from selections composed by themselves. To their credit, the Jackson’s Pipe Band was asked by the Ministry of Resources and Rural Affairs to represent Malta in Brussels with their traditional Maltese instruments along with representatives from the other 26 member nations of the EU. It will not be too long when the Band will launch its first CD of folklore music. Well first of all this is going to be a privilege to perform for the Birgu Local Council in the special event called Birgu Fest 2010. Il-grupp ISKAY ilu jagħti kontribut mużikali mis-sena 1998. Din hija storja qasira biex nispjegaw x’inhu u xi jfisser il-grupp ISKAY. Lura fl-1998 kien ġie organizzat avveniment ta’ bidla kulturali. Hawnhekk kien iż-żmien fejn grupp ta’ suċċess fil-Peru li jismu Sayari ġew mistiedna jdoqqu ma’ mużiċisti Maltin. Wara dan l-avveniment tnejn mill-mużiċisti baqgħu Malta jaħdmu ma’ l-YMCA. Dan kien fejn il-grupp ISKAY ġie ffurmat. Nixtiequ wkoll ngħidu illi l-isem ISKAY ifisser numru tnejn bil-lingwa tradizzjonali tal-Peru. Għalina din tfisser iktar min-numru tnejn għaliex fil-każ tagħna n-numru tnejn ifisser żewġ kulturi maqgħudin fi grupp wieħed. Minn dak iż-żmien ‘l hawn il-grupp ISKAY taw kontribut mużikali madwar il-Gżejjer Maltin. Our band ISKAY has been performing since 1998. This is a short story to explain how and what is ISKAY. Back in 1998 there was an exchange cultural event, were Maltese musicians performed with a popular Peruvian band called Sayari. After this event two of the musicians stayed in Malta to work with the YMCA foundation and this was when the group ISKAY was formed. By the way, the name ISKAY means “two” in the old traditional Peruvian language, in this case the number two means two different countries joined together. Since then ISKAY had been performing through out the Maltese islands and had never looked back. Il-membri tal-grupp ISKAY jinkludu; Enrique Ramos Lima li jdoqq panpipes, quena, quenacho, flute, saxophone u jkanta. Brian Tonna li jdoqq l-akkordjin. Miriam Haber Endrich li ddoqq il-kitarra kif ukoll tkanta. Andrew Tonna li jdoqq il-kitarra baxxa u fl-aħħar insibu lil Steve Bartolo li jdoqq drums u kull tip ta’ perkussjoni. L-ewwel kunċert li l-Firelight tella’ kien propju s-sena li għaddiet fil-“Birgu By Candlelight”, fejn ġie milħuq tajjeb ħafna mill-pubbliku Malti kif ukoll mitTuristi. F’Marzu li għadda dan il-grupp għamel żewġ kunċerti ġewwa l-Portugall fejn il-kantanti Maltin kantaw kanzunetti bħal Viva Malta, l-Karozzin, il-Banda t’Indri, Mur Ħallini u żewġ kanzunetti oriġinali Gżira tas-Sħarijiet u l-Għonnella fuq mużika ta’ Elton Zarb u Domnic Cini u kliem ta’ Stephen Baldacchino. ‘Firelight’ is a relatively new group composed of singers: Thalita Dimech, Ina Robinich, Domnic Cini and Neville Refalo. Eighteen months ago, the Birgu Local Council asked this group to form part of its ‘Oralities’ exchange project, under the auspices of the European Union. The project extends till 2012 and gi ves an opportunity to seven localities from five European countries to air their local folk songs in these countries during concerts organised for this purpose. Their first concert took place during last years’ ‘Birgu by Candlelight’. It was an immediate success and well recieved by their local and foreign audience present. Din is-sena stess dan il-grupp se jerġa’ jagħti kunċert ieħor fl-attivitajiet tal-“BirguFest 2010” f’Ottubru u eżattament erbat ijiem wara se jmur mawra oħra fil-Bulgarija fejn se tkun opportunita kbira oħra għal dan il-grupp li jesprimi t-talenti u jsemma kanzunetti folkloristiċi Maltin li għalkemm għandna nkunu kburin bil-mużika tradizzjonali tagħna għandna wkoll inkunu kburin li l-lingwa Maltiija qegħda tinxtered ma’ kullimkien u dan huwa kollu dovut lill-Kunsill Lokali tal-Birgu li jinsab imsieħeb fi proġetti tal-Unjoni Ewropeja f’dan il-każ “Oralities”. This year ‘Firelight’ will perform during the October BirguFest activity and four days later they will be en route to Bulgaria where our local talent will once again be offered to the public. We are not only proud of the traditional music, but also for the simple reason that our language is becoming familiar in European circles thanks to the opportunity offered by the Birgu Local Council through the ‘Oralities’ Project, of which Birgu is a partner in. Last March, ‘Firelight’ gave two concerts in Portugal and the Maltese songs included the popular ‘Viva Malta’, ‘ il-Karrozzin’, ‘il-Banda ta’ Indri’, ‘Mur u hallini’, and two original compositions by Elton Zarb and Dominic Cini, based on a text by Stephen Baldacchino and entitled ‘Gzira tas-Sharijiet’ and ‘l-Ghonnella’. The Cospicua Scout Group, which was set up in 1917, is the proud guardian of a scouting tradition which once flourished also in Birgu, l-Isla and Kalkara. Our Group’s connection with St. John’s Tower in Birgu started in 1921 and ever since the walls of this magnificent fortification have resounded with the voices of thousands of youngsters from the Cottonera and surrounding areas. For many years, the walls of this ancient city have provided a centre where our youngsters could follow in the footsteps of Lord Baden-Powell and recreate themselves while living the ideals of service to the community, education and outdoor life as laid down in the scout programme. Most of its members, who come from all walks of life all age groups, hail from the village of Safi; others come from nearby villages. However, everyone is welcome – the only requirement is a good singing voice! The choir’s repertoire ranges from religious and sacred music to profane, from Renaissance to modern, from a cappella to orchestral, from opera to film, classical to pop. As long as it is good music the choir, conducted by Mro Tony Pace who also co-founded it, will sing it! The choir has also sung in Germany (1992) and Sicily (2001 and 2008); in all cases the choir earned warm accolades, the Germans describing the Maltese music it sang as a ‘gentle breeze from the Mediterranean’. The choir has competed with international choirs during three editions of the Malta International Choir Festival. It won first place in the Malta Christmas Choir Festival of 2004. 2010 was a typical year for the Choir: it gave concerts of Sacred Music at Qrendi, Safi and Paola churches as well as at the Mdina Cathedral; it sang during the main liturgical services and feast at Safi Parish church; animated the liturgy during the village festas at Qrendi (Our Lady of Lourdes), Valletta (St Augustine) and Gudja (St Mary); participated in the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Zurrieq, sang the Mass on 9th May, feast of St George Preca, at the MUSEUM headquarters, sang during a national Pauline pilgrimage at St Paul’s Bay and participated in Birgufest. Il-mużiċisti u l-kantanti ta’ EnKor iwasslu lill-udjenza tagħhom dik ix-xi ħaġa speċjali li tagħmilhom uniċi. Kull korista jiġi mgħallem it-teknika tal-vuċi u n-nifs. Waqt il-provi tingħata attenzjoni speċjali fl-użu korrett tal-vuċi u n-nifs permezz ta’ eżerċizzji kontinwi li jibdew sa millbidu tal-warming up. EnKor ġie mwaqqaf minn Johanna van Lent-Singels, konduttriċi Olandiża tal-korijiet li ġiet toqgħod Malta fl-2001. Hi riedet taqsam il-konoxxenza u l-esperjenza tagħha ma’ dawk li jħobbu l-mużika u li għandhom ħafna entużjażmu u talent. Fl-2002 twieled EnKor. Music EnKor – L-Esperjenza EnKor - The Experience EnKor is a group of enthusiastic talented singers and musicians, who give a new meaning to the concept “choir”. This is shown by the choice and interpretation of the repertoire, as well as by EnKor’s dynamic and expressive way of performing. EnKor’s musicians give a special touch to the performances, and so do the singers. Every chorister gets trained in voice and breath technique. At rehearsals special attention is given to the proper use of voice and breath through exercises which start immediately during the warming up. EnKor was founded by Johanna van Lent-Singels, a Dutch choir conductor who moved to Malta in 2001. She wanted to share her knowledge and experience with enthusiastic and talented music lovers and in 2002 EnKor was born. Since then many EnKor singers enjoyed the family atmosphere of the choir at villa Santa Maria and developed their skills under Johanna’s encouraging guidance and inspiration. They enjoyed or even discovered the magic of music and choir singing. Regarding repertoire EnKor is an all-round choir. Its repertoire consists of all kind of styles. Classical, sacred, Maltese, special compositions and arrangements created specifically for EnKor, pop, musical, ballads etc. Throughout the years EnKor specialized in gospel: swinging up tempo pieces as well as beautiful sensitive ballads. In the past seven years EnKor has performed at many special occasions both locally as abroad. When Malta joined the EU in 2004, EnKor, in collaboration with the Malta Centre for Restoration, performed live in an open air concert in Birgu. EnKor was asked to participate as the only mixed choir of Malta. Since then EnKor performed more often in Birgu taking part in Christmas concerts like “Birgu by Christmas Light”. The concert tours abroad are also highlights in EnKor’s history. The choir was invited to sing in the Netherlands in Amsterdam and The Hague where it performed and was much appreciated by enthusiastic audiences. EnKor’s singers and its band also visited Ireland to give concerts in Dublin (Dublin on Ice and a concert for international Ambassadors) and a big charity concert in Malahide. The group has since recorded two CDs Malta’s Musical Legacy and Doqqli Daqqa!. Their repertoire includes both the music of the upper strata of society as well as Malta’s folk music performed on a combination of modern and folk instruments including flutes, harp, drum, castanets, and Maltese instruments such as the rabbaba/żavżafa (friction drum), żaqq (bagpipe), tanbur (frame drum), qarn (horn), żummara (mirliton), ċuqlajta (clapper). The Ġukulari have given well-acclaimed performances not only in Malta and Gozo but have also represented their country in the Budapest Spring Festival 2004, in Vienna for the European Union enlargement, and were chosen to perform during the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth People’s Forum held in Malta in 2005. They have just returned from performances in Portugal as part of the Oralities project. The group is made up of: Anna Borg Cardona, Silvio Zammit, Anne Marie Camilleri Podestà, Ramona Zammit Formosa, Bettina Borg Cardona. Maltese instruments are constructed by Anna Borg Cardona, who has for several years been carrying out research on the island’s traditional instruments and music and has published books and several articles in Maltese and foreign journals. The Ġukulari Ensemble adopts its name from the first known Maltese musicians on the Islands. A document of 1417 reveals the existence of several men registered in a Militia list, who were described as “juculari” by profession. These were medieval entertainers who would have been able to play several instruments, rhyme, sing and dance and offer all-round amusement. Fi Frar tal-2007 flimkien mal-kor Irlandiż Lucan Gospel Singers kienu tellgħu kunċert memorabbli u li kellu suċċess kbir. Dan wassal biex f’Awwissu tal-2008 iż-żewġ gruppi reġgħu ltaqgħu din id-darba ġewwa l-Irlanda. In October 2002, in the Parish of Santa Lucia in Malta, a small group of people started meeting regularly to enjoy singing Gospel Music. The founder and musical director was Michelle Abela LTCL (TD), ATCL, who was introduced to this style of music in 1999 when she joined a Gospel Choir in Dublin Ire- Music Joy Gospel Singers land. She immediately fell in love with the vibrancy of this style of Church Music and on her return to Malta she fulfilled her dream of having her own Gospel Choir. Through her vision and charisma and the enthusiasm of the group, Joy Gospel Singers has gone from strength to strength to become a leading Gospel Choir in Malta. St Lawrence’s Collegiate Church in Vittoriosa has hosted the choir on several occasions, but the most memorable was the joint concert with the Lucan Gospel Singers from Dublin Ireland in February 2007. This same group that had inspired Michelle to Gospel Music then hosted Joy Gospel Singers in their home town Lucan, Dublin in August 2008. During this Irish Tour, Joy Gospel Singers sang at various parishes and once again joined the Lucan Gospel Singers in another joint concert this time in aid of the Irish Red Cross in Newbridge, County Kildare. This year the group held its second singing tour this time in Assisi, Porto San Giorgio and Rome in Italy. Joy Gospel Singers has 46 members including the singers, musicians and sound technician. The most impeniative time for this group is during the summer where it is invited by many Local Councils and other different groups in Gozo and Malta to take part in different activities held at their localities. This year, like other years, it was impeniative a lot since it was invited to do a folkloristic show in a hotel every week for tourists to enjoy. This was a very nice experience. A nice memory which this group has is when it took part in David Mengaggi’s programme which was shown on the Italian Station Rete 4. Mnarja Folk Group consists of 12 dancers and a singer. Waqt li nittama li kellkom sajf tajjeb, ħa ngħidilkom jien x’kont qed nagħmel dan l-aħħar. Issa għandi kumpanija tal-immaniġġjar ġdida u jidher li qed tirnexxi. By the way if you want to check out my new Management follow this link www.thruthemill.co.uk . I’ve just come back from my visit to the UK, which was out of this world! For two reasons mainly, the first being that I saw my sister Charlotte taking part in her very first end of year school show at Italia Conti. She was brilliant, and super talented! She made me really proud =’) .. The next reason being that i met Pixie Lott, who was watching the Italia Conti show on the same night that me and my family watched it!.. She seemed like a really sweet girl, very humble and down to earth, which is something I really liked about her. Apparti din iż-żjara qasira fir-Renju Unit, kelli ħafna xogħol fl-istudio naħdem fuq materjal ġdid u eċitanti biex noħroġ l-ewwel album, li mistenni jkun ippublikat bħal dan iż-żmien sena. Apart from my short visit to the UK I’ve been very busy in the studio working on new and exciting material aimed for my debut album, which is due for release around this time next year. I am lucky to be working with some amazingly talented people! In fact I’ll be travelling to Scotland to work with a great Guitarist and now producer, whose name I will reveal soon.. prom ise to tell you more as soon as I can… I’m so ex cited, can’t wait! Hemm ukoll il-fatt li l-website il-ġdida tiegħi ġiet varata u għal min irid ikun jaf x’qed nagħmel jidhol fiha. Din hi www.totallysophie.com. Bl-għajnuna talKunsill Lokali tal-Birgu s-sena l-oħra tella’ l-ewwel produzzjoni ‘Il-Kerrejja’ - dramm soċjali ta’ Ġuże Chetcuti. Wara s-suċċess miksub fil-ġranet talBirguFest 2009, fejn proprju dan id-dramm sar għall-ewwel darba, ġie mistieden biex jittella’ fil-jiem tal-Milied f’postijiet oħrajn. Fil-Birgu, f’attivita oħra mtella’ mill-Kunsill Lokali f’Ħamis ix-Xirka u l-Ġimgħa l-Kbira, FACES kien hemm b’’Duwlos’ - l-aħħar ċena drammatizzata ta’ Noel Zerafa f’waħda mill-aktar binjiet storiċi li tinsab fil-Belt Vittoriosa, dik tal-Berġa ta’ Franza, fejn proprju ftit taż-żmien ieħor se jkunu l-Uffiċini Amministrattivi talKunsill Lokali tal-Birgu. L-impenn għal dan il-grupp ma naqas qatt għax matul l-aħħar sena ġie mitlub ikun preżenti wkoll waqt lImdinaFest li sar f’April. Bla dubju ta’ xejn, ‘Ix-Xatt’, dramm spettakolari ambjentat fi żmien it-tieni gwerra dinjija ta’ Ġorġ Peresso, ħa jibqa’ żgur fil-memorji ta’ ħafna. Dan id-dramm sar l-Isla matul il-Festival Marittimu li sar f’Ġunju li għadda. Wara din l-introduzzjoni, tajjeb li ngħidu xi ħaġa fuq dak li se noffru lill-pubbliku li ser iżur il-Belt tal-Birgu din id-darba. ‘Nofsinhar’, dramm soċjali ta’ Charles Scerri ħa jiġi mtella’ waqt il-BirguFest 2010 b’direzzjoni ta’ Mario Gatt. Dan id-dramm jismu ‘Nofsinhar’ għax jirrakkonta storja ta’ familja li ġejja mill-inħawi tal-Kottonera, u li allura ġejja kif aħna magħrufa mis-’SOUTH’. Issa nħallu f’idejkhom biex tiġġudikaw. Drama FACES know their foundation a year ago. With the cooperation of the Birgu Local Council, they produced ‘ l-Kerrejja’ as their first production - a social play by Ġuże Chetcuti. After the Birgufest 2009 success when the play was presented, the Group was requested to repeat it during Christmas time in various other localities. Around Maundy Thursday and Good Friday this year, during a Local Council activity in Birgu, FACES produced ‘Duwlos’, a dramatised version of the Last Supper by Noel Zerafa and staged at the historical edifice of the Auberge de France in Vittoriosa - soon to become the new Administrative seat of the Local Council. The group has been on the go ever since its inception, including its participation in April in MdinaFest. Without doubt, ‘Ix-Xatt’, is a spectacular play by Ġorġ Peresso, depicting a Second World War environment, was produced and presented to the public in Senglea during the June edition of the Maritime Festival. It is now pertinent to hint on what is to feature in the forthcoming edition of Birgufest. ‘Nofsinhar’ is a social act by Charles Scerri and directed by Mario Gatt. It bears that name as it narrates the story of a family coming from the ‘South’ of Malta, as the residents of the Cottonera area are commonly referred to. At this point we leave it all to your imagination to judge its background. FACES would like to thank all those who encouraged and assisted them throughout the past year so they exposed the talents of the group, not least the Birgu Local Council who was the promoter for the setting up of the group itself. FACES jixtiequ jirringrazzjaw lil dawk kollha li b’xi mod jew ieħor għenu u tawhom l-appoġġ matul l-aħħar sena li ilhom stabbiliti u biex ikomplu jiffjorixxu t-talenti ta’ dawk imsieħba magħhom. The driving force behind the society is the Choral Group, consisting of 6 mixed sections with a total of 44 Canterini (singers), which has contributed to the purpose of the society with the recording of 7 discs, 4 of which under the direction of Maestro Bruto Carioli, the first volume directed by Maestro Alberto Frabetti and 2 volumes under the direction of Maestro Matteo Unich. For cultural exchange with other cities, choral concerts have been given throughout Italy and also abroad (on average 25-30 concerts each year). Numerous concerts have been given at Chartres in France, at Speyer and Ostalbkreis in Germany, at Chichester in England, in Poland, Yugoslavia and Spain. The Choral Group has taken part in radio and television shows, the sound track of the film “Passatore”, a Christmas show for the Italian Broadcasting Corporation (RAI), Romagna delle valli for Channel 5 and Domenica del Villaggio for Rete4. It is a tradition of the Choral Group to take part at Ostia Antica each year at the end of November in the celebrations in memory of the Scariolanti Romagnoli (labourers from Romagna who moved earth in barrows) who worked in the land reclamation along the coast near Rome. The Choral Group has also taken an active part in the staging of no less than 33 editions of La Rumâgna int e’tu cör (Romagna in your heart) an event that concerns the Ravignano (a person from Ravenna) back in his city of origin on the occasion of the Christmas festivities, in the hope of bringing a little Christmas cheer to everyone. They have made an equally active contribution to the summer event Trebbo dei Canterini Romagnoli, now in its 33rd edition, which has hosted famous personages and choral groups of great talent. Another initiative of the Society, aimed at maintaining and presenting folklore to an increasingly wide public, is the biannual Songs of Romagna Competition (11th edition). The great interest shown has resulted in the start of choral singing courses, with linguistic study of the song texts in the dialect of Romagna, offered since 2002 in the schools of the Municipality and Province of Ravenna. This scheme has become a part of the annual activities of the Society and every year involves 500-600 schoolchildren. The Choral Group has been directed with sensitivity and passion successively by: Bruto Carioli, Angelo Creonti, Alberto Frabetti, Ultimo Bellini and Eugenio Gramantieri. At the moment Maestro Matteo Unich directs the performance of the entire traditional repertoire of the Old and New Romagna. U l-villaġġ ta’ Zebreira kien ideali għal dan l-iskop. In-nisa tal-villaġġ ħolqu huma strumenti mużikali elaborati li flimkien mal-ilħna melodjużi tagħhom iwasslu l-għanjiet tagħhom. L-istrumenti tagħhom huma magħmulin minn injam, tappijiet tal-fliexken u qxur tal-arzell. Saca Sons, fl-aħħar tliet snin taw 250 rappreżentazzjoni fil-Portugall, Spanja, Franza u l-Bulgarija. Zebreira huwa villaġġ fil-muniċipalita ta’ Idanha-a-Nova u kien hawn fejn twieled il-grupp Saca Sons – isem li hu ġej minn wieħed mill-istess strumenti tradizzjonali li jużaw. Dawk li jammiraw il-folk Portugiż, ħadu gost li taw ħajja ġdida lil repertorju li kien kważi ntilef. Blgħajnuna tal-Muniċipju ta’ Idanha-a-Nova u ADRCAS, li hija l-Għaqda li tirrapreżenta l-għaqdiet folk, huma bdew jagħtu rappreżentazzjonijiet f’Jannar tal-2003, anke fuq it-TV. Iz-Zamburra hija bħal ma’ hija iż-żaqq tradizzjonali Maltija. Magħmula minn speċi ta’ borma tat-tafal magħluqa b’ġilda tan-nagħaġ stirata u d-daqqaq itella’ u jniżżel idu mxarrba bi ftit ilma biex joħloq ħoss simili għal naħqa ta’ ħmar. Music SACA SONS Idanha-a-Nova plain is well knowned as the birthplace of some of the most beautiful ethnic melodies of Portugal. Well kept along the years, many of our traditions still turn this region magical and breathtaking to the harts of the anonymous visitant listeners - the ‘ raiano’ spirit of whom was this group born, at the village of Zebreira. After an atempt on recovering and preserve the local tradition of the Janeiras singing, the technicians of the local Pólo da Campina ( from ADRACES), challenged the participants - mainly women - to keep on singing the village’s musical patrimony. With the particular soul of this region’s people - bold, kind and, above all, volunteering - was this group born. Zamburras and adufes, with the help of an open mind recriate music made of lovestories and misguidances taking place in the rural world. Zebreira was the perfect cradle. Using their creativity these fighting women elaborate their own musical instruments ( zamburras, cabacinhas and reco-recos made of shells, wood and bottle caps) wich are used along with their marvelous voices. In three years, Saca Sons acounts for 250 performances in several places both in Portugal and abroad ( Spain, France and Bulgaria). The village of Zebreira, at Idanha-a-Nova Municipality, was the birthplace of a new local group of traditional music, named saca sons after the name of one of the traditional musical instruments. For those who enjoy Portuguese ethnography and folklore this is quite a different proposal, regarding a sort of innovation by recovering this almost forgotten repertoire. Along with the support of Idanha-a-nova’s Municipality and ADRACES – Pólo da Campina ( a LEADER Association) the group started its presentations by January of 2003. After this they have presented their work in several places in Portugal ( Centro cultural de Belém, Lisboa; RTP ( National Television), and abroad, in Spain and France, in about 250 concerts. The Zamburra ( the symbol of Saca sons) is traditional musical instrument, usually built with from a clay pot that works as a sounding box. The pot’s mouth is covered with a very well stretched sheep skin, helding, in the middle, a thin wood stick. To make it sound, the player will have to wet his hand and then rubbing the stick. This up and down move will make a deep sound that reminds the voice of a donkey. Mużika Music Banda Militari ta’ Wessex Wessex Military Band Il-Wessex Military Band bdiet bħala banda għaż-żgħażagħ fl-1981, immexxija mid-direttur Martin Dawson. Millewwel il-banda kienet magħrufa u bdiet tkun mistiedna f’ħafna postijiet madwar in-naħa t`isfel ta` l-Ingilterra u wkoll żaret diversi postijiet fl-Ewropa. The Wessex Military Band started life as a youth band in 1981, under the inspiration of bandmaster Martin Davison. The band managed to build up its reputation and take on more and more engagements all over the south of England and toured parts of Europe. Iż-żgħażagħ bandisti eventwalment kibru u fl-1990, lArmata Ingliża għażlet il-Wessex biex tkun il-banda volontarja ta’ l-Army Air Corps f’Middle Wallop ħdejn Andover, peress li dak iż-żmien ma kienx hemm banda reġimentali. F’daqqa waħda il-Wessex bdiet tipparteċipa f’ħafna attivitajiet uffiċjali bħala l-band volontiera ta’ l-Army Air Corps. Dawn żdiedu aktar fl-1991 waqt ilgwerra tal-Golf Għarbi, peress li l-baned tar-reġimenti kollha kellhom imorru l-Kuwait u l-Iraq. Il-Banda bdiet tidher f’ħafna attivitajiet uffiċjali, iżda l-aktar prestiġjużi kienu quddiem HRH il-Prinċep ta’ Wales u HRH id-Duka ta’ Kent. Mill-1994 ‘il quddiem, il-Wessex Military Band baqgħet tikber taħt it-tmexxija ta’ Martin Davison, fejn ipparteċipaw f’ħafna festivals internazzjonali, u rrappreżentaw irRenju Unit f’diversi okkażżonijiet. Il-Banda tieħu sehem f’madwar 40 parteċipazzjoni fis-sena u għandha diversi membri b’kapaċitajiet differenti. Din hi t-tieni żjara tagħhom hawn Malta peress li kienu diġa pparteċipaw fl-ewwel edizzjoni tal-“Malta Military Tattoo”. Barra minn hekk din hija l-ewwel darba li pparteċipaw fl-attivita talBirguFest 2010 u dan seta’ jsir biss bl-għajnuna tas-Sur Alfred Busietta, li ta’ kull sena jġib dawn il-baned f’Malta biex jieħdu sehem fil-Military Tattoo. The youngsters in the band eventually matured and in 1990 the British Army invited the band to form as the voluntary band of the Army Air Corps based at Middle Wallop near Andover, who at the time had no regimental band. Without delay the band began performing at official engagements as the Voluntary Band of the Army Air Corps. These commitments escalated when in 1991 the Gulf War commenced and the majority of full-time army regimental bands were called up for active service in Kuwait and Iraq. One of the most prestigious engagements involved performing for HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duke of Kent. From 1994 the band continued to flourish under the baton of bandmaster Martin Davison, performing at international music festivals all over Europe and representing the UK on many different occasions. The band performs at over 40 engagements annually and has a strong base of members of all ages and abilities, ranging from absolute beginners to military musicians and music professionals. This is their second visit to Malta. The Band had participated during the first edition of the Malta Military Tattoo. Not only, this is the first time ever, that they will participate in the BirguFest 2010 event, and this was made possible with the direct help of Mr. Alfred Busietta, who every year brings these bands in Malta, to participate in the “Military Tattoo”. Il-Mużew ġie nawgurat f’Lulju tal-1992 u huwa l-post fejn kull min iħobb il-baħar ma jistax ifalli li jżur. Il-bini kien ġie ddisinjat mill-Arkitett u Inġinier Navali Ingliż William Scamp u nbena bejn l-1842 u 1845 fuq il-post fejn il-Kavallieri kellhom l-iskal. Il-Fran kienu l-qofol tal-attivita fil-Victualling Yard u kienu jfornu lill-Flotta Navali Ingliża fil-Mediterran bil-ħobż u gallettini kuljum. Wara t-Tieni Gwerra Dinjija, l-bini nbidel f’Uffiċini għallGwardjani tal-Ammirall sakemm ingħalqet il-bażi militari f’Malta f’Marzu tal-1979. Il-kollezzjoni fil-Mużew hija illustrazzjoni tal-istorja marittima u lesperjenzi li għaddew minnhom il-baħħara fil-kuntest Mediterranju bla ma wieħed jitraskura l-fatt ta’ x’impatt ħalla t-tbaħħir globali u l-effett li ħalla fuq is-soċjeta. Dawra mal-binja, wieħed jiltaqa’ ma’ materjal tat-tbaħħir interessanti: hemm il-magna tal-istim tal-karrakka ‘Anadrian’ (1951) kompluta bil-makkinarju kollu tal-kamra tal-magni li tiżen tliet tunellati; hemm kollezzjoni ta’ mudelli u tpinġijiet ta’ bejn is-sittax u l-għoxrin seklu, u li kollha għandhom rabta ma’ Malta. It-tbaħħir tal-passat hu muri permezz tal-amfori Rumani u ankri taċ-ċomb li ttellgħu mill-ibħra Maltin u kollezzjoni oħra żgħira tal’watercolour’ u mudelli li juru tipi differenti tal-vapuri antiki. Iżżmien ta’ meta kien hawn l-Ordni ta’ San Ġwann hu muri b’wirja ta’ armi, ankri, kanuni, tpinġijiet u diversi oġġetti oħra marittimi. Iż-żmien qasir tal-okkupazzjoni Franċiża f’Malta huwa muri permezz tal-mudell tal-vapur maqbud fil-gwerra li kellu tmien kanuni bl-isem ta’ ‘Bucentaur’, li kien l-iktar vapur importanti fil-Battalja ta’ Trafalgar. Ir-rabta bejn in-Navy Ingliża u Malta fuq perjodu ta’ iktar minn mitejn sena tinsab ġo Sala għaliha. Dan għaliex tinkludi l-istorja tal-qawwa Navali Ingliża fil-Mediterran bejn id-dsatax u l-għoxrin seklu u l-impatt li din il-preżenza ħalliet fuq l-ekonomija u l-ħajja soċjali tal-Gżejjer Maltin. Hemm ukoll strumenti tan-navigazzjoni, pjanti nawtiċi, kotba bis-sinjali tat-tbaħħir, u ritratti ta’ piloti Maltin li juru t-tbaħħir tagħhom lil hinn mill-kosta Maltija. Taqsima oħra titratta d-dgħajjes tat-tbaħħir Maltin fil-qasam merkantili u d-Dwana. Fil-futur qrib se jkun hemm taqsima oħra li titratta oqsma marittimi nkluż sport tal-baħar. Għalkemm dan it-tagħrif mhux xi preżentazzjoni kronoloġika talistorja u tal-esibiti fil-Mużew Marittimu, hija biżżejjed biex tħajjar dawk dilettanti tat-tbaħħir iżuru dan il-Mużew fl-ewwel okkażjoni tagħhom li jżuru l-Birgu. Il-Mużew huwa wieħed minn erbgħa u tlettin (34) sit li jitmexxa mill-Aġenzija Governattiva - Heritage Malta - li twaqqfet f’Jannar tal-2003. Il-Mużew ikun miftuħ kuljum bejn id-disgħa ta’ filgħodu u l-ħamsa ta’ wara nofsinhar minbarra fil-Ġimgħa l-Kbira, lejliet u nhar il-Milied, u lejliet u nhar l-ewwel tas-Sena. The building was designed by the British Naval architect and engineer William Scamp and was constructed, between 1842 and 1845 over the site of the covered slipway of the Knights of St John. The Bakery was the hub of the Victualing Yard and supplied the RN Mediterranean fleet with its daily requirements of bread and biscuits. After the Second World War the building was converted into offices and became the headquarters of the Admiralty Constabulary where it remained in use up till the closure of the British military base in March 1979. The Museum’s collection aims at illustrating Malta Maritime’s history and experience within a Mediterranean context without, however, neglecting the global nature of seafaring and its impact on society. Walking through this appealing building, one comes across various fascinating sea-related items. Amongst these, one finds the entire engine-room machinery of the steam driven grab dredger ‘Anadrian’ (1951) including the three Ton working triple expansion steam engine, a fine collection of models and paintings dating from the 16th to the 20th century, all having a Maltese connection. Ancient shipping is represented by Roman amphorae and lead stock anchors retrieved from Maltese waters, and a small collection of watercolours and models illustrating some of the most important ship types of antiquity. The period between 1530 and 1798, covering the rule of the Order of St John in Malta, is documented by a fascinating display of period paintings, weapons, anchors, models, cannon and various other artefacts. The brief French occupation is illustrated by a beautiful prisoner of war model of the eighty-gun ship ‘Bucentaur’, French flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar. The connection between the Royal Navy and Malta spanning almost two hundred years is told in a separate hall. The various displays demonstrate the history of the Royal Navy in the Mediterranean during the 19th and 20th centuries and its impact on the economy and social life of the Maltese Islands. A small but important collection of navigational instruments, nautical charts, signalling manuals and portraits of Maltese pilots demonstrate the quest to sail far and beyond Maltese shores. Other sections deal with traditional Maltese boats Mercantile marine, and Customs. In the near future, other halls will be opened including one on Maltese maritime sports and leisure. This review is not meant to give a chronological and detailed presentation of the history and exhibits of The Malta Maritime Museum. It is only intended to introduce this historical attraction and induce visiting yachtsmen to make the Museum a ‘must’ on their Malta agenda. The Malta Maritime Museum is one of 34 Museums and Heritage sites managed by the Government agency Heritage Malta that was set up in January (2003). The museum is open daily from Monday to Sunday between 09.00 and 17.00hrs except for Good Friday, 24, 25, 31st December and January 1st. L-għan tal-Inkwiżizzjoni kien dak li tħares il-fidi Kattolika minn kull theddid possibbli bħal twemmin u prattiċi eretiċi, il-Protestantiżmu, ilblasfemija, l-apostasija lejn l-Islam waqt l-iskjavitu, il-bigamija u l-maġija. F’Malta l-Inkwiżituri kienu residenti fil-Birgu, f’binja li oriġinat bħala l-qorti ċivili tal-Ordni jew il-Castellania u li mas-snin ġiet żviluppata fil-palazz li għandna llum. L-Inkwiżizzjoni damet Malta sal-miġja ta’ Napuljun fl-1798. Il-Palazz tal-Inkwiżitur hu wieħed mill-ftit palazzi tax-xorta tiegħu, u hu l-uniku palazz tal-inkwiżizzjoni miftuħ għall-pubbliku fid-dinja. Hu ġawra arkitettonika li tiġbor aktar minn ħames sekli ta’ storja mifruxa mill-Medjuevu tardiv Malti sal-espressjonijiet Barokki. Pietro Dusina, Apostolic Delegate and first Inquisitor General of Malta. Its task was to act as a watchdog against all kinds of heretical beliefs and practices, targeting the threat of Protestantism, blasphemy, apostasy to Islam during slavery, bigamy and magic. Throughout their stay on the island, which lasted till the arrival of Napoleon in 1798, the Inquisitors lived in Vittoriosa, extending what formerly served as the Order’s law courts or Castellania. Their residence, known as the ‘Inquisitor’s Palace’, is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind and the only one open to the public worldwide. Of great architectural relevance this building embraces over five centuries of history spanning from the late Medieval to the Baroque idioms. Now part of Heritage Malta, the Inquisitor’s Palace focuses on Malta’s religious urban culture and is the flagship of the Ethnography Section. Opening Hours – Throughout Birgufest, the Inquisitor’s Palace will extend its opening hours till midnight on Friday 8th and Saturday 9th October and till 8pm on Sunday 10th October. Entrance is at a special reduced price. Esebizzjoni Exhibition Ford Klassiċi Malta Il-Klabb tal-karozzi Ford Classic ta’ Malta twaqqaf fl-1995. Classic Ford Malta The Classic Ford Malta club was formed in 1995. We are a group of Classic Ford owners, family members and friends who are proud of their cars and want to have some fun. Anyone who owns an Escort Mk1 or Mk2, Cortina, Anglia, Capri or other small Ford, either modified or original, whose registration date is more than 20 years, is more than welcome to join the club. We have members who are keen about their cars, rebuilding, restoring or modifying their cars all the time. Then there are those who are enthusiastic about their engine up keeping and upgrade. It doesn’t matter if your car isn’t really a show car or a fashionable collector’s item. If you are proud of it and like to drive it, in serious or not so serious events, you are more than welcome to join and have some fun. We simply try to provide an opportunity for fun loving car enthusiasts to get together and enjoy themselves. We do a number of things designed to appeal to a wide range of interests and age groups. Some of these events are run by the Club exclusively for members, some are run by other clubs and others are run jointly by two Clubs or more. Since not everyone is into speed, we offer other types of events designed to encourage the participation of all our members. For those who have a real beauty to show off, there is the Run. The Run is really a promotional events for the Club disguised as a social outing. All you have to do is give the car a wash and a bit of polish and vacuum rubbish out of the back seat and turn up. Normally the Run starts at a designated place where members gather and then enjoy a ride to a particular place where the cars are all arranged in a display layout. While members enjoy seeing passers-by looking at their cars, stories and tips are swapped together with advices on peculiar problems on their respective cars. The directors and members forming part of this group, would like to thank the Birgu Local Council for the opportunity given to participate in the BirguFest 2010 event. F’dan il-Proġett l-ibliet imsieħba huma Evora fil-Portugall li tmexxi l-Grupp, l-ibliet ta’ Mertola u Idanha-a-Nova fil-Portugall, il-belt Taljana ta’ Ravenna, dik Spanjola ta’ Ourense, kif ukoll Sliven filBulgarija, minbarra l-Birgu. Il-ħsieb tal-Proġett hu li jinħoloq il-makkinarju, l-appoġġ u l-materja sabiex jippriżerva, jippubblika, jissistematizza u jkunu rkuprati tradizzjonijiet orali li huma parti mill-wirt kulturali li ma jidhirx, waqt li fl-istess ħin jagħti opportunita għall-produzzjonijiet, ħarsien, u evalwazzjoni, kif ukoll immaniġġjar kulturali tal-Proġett f’qafas innovattiv. Il-Proġett ‘Oralities’, permezz tal-moviment minn post għal ieħor tal-gruppi mużikali u atturi jkun qed ifassal bejn il-parteċipanti skambji kulturali u djalogu. Dan isir billi gruppi mużikali u dawk midħla tat-tradizzjonijiet tal-fomm iżuru ‘l xulxin. Fil-kamp mużikali jippromwovu l-ħolqien ta’ gruppi ġodda, l-użu tajjeb tal-ispazji kulturali fl-ibliet u l-użu razzjonali tal-apparat, u wkoll il-potenzjal kulturali ta’ xulxin. Dan jagħmilha possibbli biex permezz tal-parteċipazzjoni tad-diversi komunitajiet u faxxa ta’ pubbliku ġdid, issir deċentralizzazzjoni f’dan is-settur. Fil-Proġett Oralities, l-ibliet parteċipanti qed itellgħu festival f’kull belt fejn mużiċisti, kantanti u atturi minn bliet oħra jistgħu jipparteċipaw. Dan japplika wkoll għal bliet żgħar fejn it-tema tagħhom tkun il-mużika tal-era Bikrija u Rinaxximentali, mużika popolari u tradizzjonali, waqt li jsiru laqgħat tal-ibliet dwar it-tradizzjonijiet orali. Flimkien mal-Birgufest 2010, se jkun hemm program mużikali popolari u tradizzjonali minn tliet gruppi mill-ibliet ta’ Mertola u Idanha-a-Nova tal-Portugall, u minn Ravenna fl-Italja. Il-grupp ‘Violas Campanicos’ minn Mertola se jkun fuq itTieni Palk fi Triq it-Torri ta’ San Ġwann; il-Grupp ‘Cantevini Romagnoli’ ta’ Ravenna se jkun fuq il-palk Numru 5 fi Triq il-Foss, waqt li ‘Saca Sons’ ta’ Idanha-a-Nova fuq il-Palk Numru 6 fi Triq La Valette (il-post magħruf bħala ‘Is-Simenta’). Il-ħinijiet ta’ dawn il-gruppi jkun dejjem bejn it8.15 pm u d-9.15 pm. Il-Proġett Oralities jagħmel stima tal-kulturi tradizzjonali billi fil-kuntest ta’ tiġdid, jippromwovu koperazzjoni kulturali bejn ir-reġjuni, l-komunitajiet u aġenti artistiċi u kulturali. L-imsieħba f’dan il-proġett qed jaħdmu flimkien biex jirristrutturawha. Fil-Berġa ta’ Franza, li tinsab fi Triq Hilda Tabone, se jkun hemm esebizzjoni dwar l-ibliet parteċipanti fil-Proġett u xenarju dwarhom, kif ukoll tagħrif dwar kull belt. Din ilwirja ġiet inawgurata fil-belt ta’ Ravenna fi Frar li għadda fil-preżenza tas-Sindki tal-ibliet membri tal-Proġett. Wara l-Birgu din il-wirja tmur fil-belt Spanjola ta’ Ourense sakemm tkun daret l-ibliet parteċipanti kollha tal-Proġett. 58 Kunsill Lokali Birgu Birgu Local Council The Oralities Project co-financed by the European Union under the Culture Programme 2007 – 2013 will help the seven participating Cities to share and exchange cultural values through music and language.
