Offering online donation options, FAQs and a guide to tax-wise giving, the redesigned site has a whole new look. You can find it directly at “http://www.plainfieldlibraryfoundation.org” or via the Library’s website by clicking the “Library Info” button and then choosing the “Support Us” tab. Donation opportunities abound. If you want to see your name (or a loved one’s) on the Balloons and Blocks Donor Wall in the lower level lobby, forms are available on the Donor Wall page. The Current Needs List page highlights Library needs for today and the future. Any donation to help meet any Current Need listed is appreciated! Click “Donate Now” on the right side of any Foundation site screen to reach the secure payment gateway. Transactions on the site are fully protected with encryption and the Foundation does not share or sell information about its donors. Donors may choose to have donations acknowledged on the Recent Donors list or remain anonymous. The Plainfield Public Library Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization supporting the mission of the Plainfield Public Library. Adults Plainfield Public Library District Spring 2014 Crafts Fashion Crafty Card Making for Moms & Teens (Grades 6–12) Tuesday, May 6, 6:30 pm Create memories of special times together by making stylish greeting cards and a purse candy holder with your daughter. Please register each person attending. Summer Fashion Trends Tuesday, May 20, 7:00 pm Straight from the runway, meet fashion designer Laima Gaudi. She will showcase the latest fashion trends from around the world and demonstrate stylish ways to wear a scarf. The first 20 registered patrons receive a designer scarf. Container Gardening Specialty Terrariums Monday, March 31, 7:00 pm Can you imagine a terrarium as unique as you are? Step by step demonstration focuses on cultivating a terrarium to reflect your interests or favorite colors in a customized miniature garden. Terrarium giveaway for a lucky attendee. Green Living Cooking Chicken Coop Basics Saturday, March 8, 10:00 am Get the facts on how to build a safe and comfortable home for chickens. Find out the essential components of a coop, things to avoid when choosing construction materials, important construction tips and coop styles. Spring Salads and Sides Wednesday, May 21, 7:00 pm As gardens start to bloom, now is the time to think about bringing a variety of tasteful salads and side dishes to your table. Take in the scenery, adventure and culture of the famed Coast to Coast Path, with a side trip up England’s highest peak, Scafell Pike. 2 History Baseball Card Collecting Saturday, March 8, 2:00 pm A local baseball card specialist will review the history of baseball cards, show a few collectibles and evaluate cards brought by the audience. In addition to classes on PC use and email, Microsoft Office software programs and genealogy help, watch for the introduction of new classes about blogging and social media, such as Pinterest and Facebook, throughout the year. All PCs and classes have been upgraded to feature Windows 7. Check the Library’s online calendar for specific dates and times. Registration is required. Students will be required to create a free account with Kaplan to receive their test results. Open to all high school students, registration required. Annual Teen Poetry Slam Grades 6 to 12 Monday, April 21 7:00 to 8:30 pm Middle and high school students are encouraged to submit their original work (limit of 2) for the annual Teen Poetry Slam. Entries must be submitted via e-mail to [email protected] by April 5. On the evening of the Slam, students, their families and friends are invited to an event where all entrants will have an opportunity to read their work for the audience. Prizes will be awarded, including an audience favorite chosen after the poetry readings. Refreshments will be served. This is always an evening to be remembered for teen poets in our midst! Spring 2014 ROBLOX Demo Grades 5 to 9 Wednesday, April 30 6:00 to 7:30 pm Local computer whiz, Alex Chan, will host an informational meeting on ROBLOX, a multiplayer online game for kids and teens. He will demonstrate the game as well as give an introduction on programming within the game. Familiarity with ROBLOX is recommended but not required. McCormick. Amy McCormick, an accomplished artist and animal activist served in the Red Cross as a nurse during WWI. The McCormicks lived at Cantigny in Winfield and established it as a public park. WWI Plainfield Soldiers: Author meet and greet Thursday, April 24, 11:00 am Author Caron Stillmunkles highlights the lives of Plainfield soldiers during and after World War I with stories and photos. The history of the WWI soldiers was compiled over five years of research involving more than 300 soldiers listed on the Plainfield Soldiers’ Monument. This research culminated in the book, Cease Firing ... a Call to Duty, which will be available for sale. Military Genealogy Monday, May 19, 7:00 pm Do you have ancestors who served in the U.S. military? This class will trace military records from the American Revolution to the Vietnam War with an emphasis on documents available at local, state and national archives. Grand Finale: “The Legacy Girls” Wednesday, May 7, 6:30 pm White Oak Public Library District, Romeoville Branch, 201 W. Normantown Road, Romeoville The closing program, timed to coincide with the anniversary of unconditional German surrender ending World War II in Europe, will feature a performance of iconic WWII-era music by “The Legacy Girls.” This 1940’s-style singing group performs the toe-tapping hits of the famous Andrews Sisters with tight three-part harmonies, costumes, synchronized choreography and comedic flair.
