Introduction
In this the October 2009 issue of “The Monty” we cover a wide range of news items, tips
and trends about the worldwide heat treating industry. This edition tells you how the US
Environmental Protection Agency is taking the first step towards reporting of greenhouse
gas emissions for large users of energy, contains a report about the heat treating industry
in Brazil, includes our (and others) opinions about the recent ASM Heat Treating Exposition
and Gear Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, our thoughts on the 25 most influential people
in the heat treating industry and my favourite-a supplier to the heat treating industry that
has actually seen business increase in 2009! In addition to our news items we also provide
you with listings of heat treaters looking for new positions, companies looking to hire and a
very up to date compilation of some of the best priced used heat treating equipment you
will find anywhere.
What brings me the biggest joy about this issue is that you will notice a renewed sense of
optimism about business conditions. Having spent 31 years in the heat treating industry I
can unequivocally say that 2009 ranks as the absolute worst for business, however the
general consensus is that we have reached the bottom and business is painfully slowly
showing some signs of recovery. Granted things are dismal compared to 2007 but guess
what? We have all learned how to cope with the new realities of the industry and from here
everything is up.

Michael Cousin/Park Thermal. Mike is a well known, very experienced , long time “heat
treat guy” who recently parted ways with one of the largest new furnace builders in North
America, Ipsen International based in Rockford, Illinois, USA. We have a good ending to
this story as Mike just yesterday joined with new furnace builder/used equipment dealer
Park Thermal based in Georgetown, Ontario, Canada. While many of the details are still up
in the air Mike has told us that he is looking forward to assimilating into Canadian culture

by learning how to say “eh” and drink Tim Hortons coffee which of course you have to be
able to do as a true Canadian. I am sure there is more to come on this story. October 2/09

Ipsen International/New “Titan” Orders. (October 1, 2009, Rockford, IL) Ipsen, Inc.
announced today that the company has shipped two new Titan Vacuum Furnaces to a
manufacturer of hydraulic components and complete hydraulic systems located in Europe.
These furnaces feature a 12-bar nitrogen or argon internal quench system, an energy
efficient graphite hot zone with shaped graphite heating elements capable of processing
temperatures up to 2,400 ºF, and a Vacu-Prof™ interactive control system. The units have
an 18" (457 mm) wide x 18" (457 mm) high x 24" (610 mm) deep effective work zone, and

We've Found Them! A company in North America involved in the heat treating industry
that has actually grown over the past year. Not a commercial heat treater-we are not aware
of any that have grown in sales. Not a new furnace builder-not aware of any. Not an alloy
company-we are not aware of any that have grown. The company that we know of that has
seen sales grow (although not an enormous amount) over the past year is Atmosphere
Engineering in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA which makes flow meters and Endo Injectors. We

freely admit this is not a large company but they are obviously doing something right, partly
based upon overseas orders, partly just plain having a good product. Have a good news

Surface Heat Treat & Coatings. A relatively new company in Stoney Creek, Ontario,
Canada, Surface Heat Treat and Coatings would appear to be growing quite quickly. Owned
and run by Janet Abrahamse the company within the last month replaced one of their older
vacuum furnaces with a newer Surface Combustion vacuum furnace which was previously
located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. October 1/09
ASM International/Industrial Heating. For quite some time ASM through the ASM Heat
Treating Society (HTS) has published Heat Treating Progress magazine, a magazine
dedicated to the international heat treating community. ASM will discontinue the magazine
with HTS news being published in Industrial Heating on a bi-monthly basis. While the details
have been agreed upon it still has to be approved by both organizations, HTS monthly
updates in Industrial Heating will start January 1/2010. HTS will continue to publish a
weekly electronic newsletter.September 29/09
25 Most Influential People in the Heat Treating Industry. A new reader to “themonty”
claimed he thoroughly enjoyed an article we posted in August of 2007 about the 25 most
influential people in the heat treating industry. However as he pointed out a few of the
individuals on our list have retired and in a couple of instances have very unfortunately
passed away. This reader was dead on the money-time to update our list. A quick overview
tells us at least 10 individuals will need to be changed meaning we are looking towards our
readers to make suggestions. The basic criteria is an individual who through his decisions
can alter the course of captive or commercial heat treating, change the direction of
technology or has such insightful ideas that they can alter the perception of heat treating.
We would expect that next week we can present our updated top 25 list. September 29/09
When looking for the individuals most responsible for charting the current and future
pattern of heat treating in North America what criteria are we applying? The academics who
research the theories of heat treating or the individuals who implement these ideas? The
CEO's of the largest commercial heat treat companies or the metallurgists at the large
captives such as General Motors or Boeing? Do furnace makers initiate new technologies or
are they merely following what the market dictates? Does a purchasing agent at Timken
Bearings or Ford effect heat treating or are they merely following the dictates of the
metallurgical or engineering department? Ultimately you could argue that the CEO of
General Motors affects the heat treating industry in North America far more than any one
person directly involved in heat treating. At the end of the day we relied upon our opinions
and our readers opinions (of which there were many) to arrive at a list that includes all of

the above. You'll see several CEO's of the continents' largest commercial heat treaters,
several entrepreneurs whose products have had a direct bearing on the technology currently
in use, a good representation of the new furnace builders, at least 2 individuals at the large
captives and several academics whose research into the industry has proven to be
invaluable. While Mr. John Hubbard of Bodycote International was far and away the number
one choice as the most influential individual in the North American heat treating industry
and we rated him as such the rest of our selections are listed alphabetically.
Mr. John Hubbard, CEO, Bodycote International (Commercial Heat Treating). While John is
based in the UK the decisions he and Bodycote make as the largest commercial heat treater
in the world have a direct bearing on commercial heat treating, the fortunes of some of the
industries' suppliers and through their success at taking over captive heat treating
operations they also have an impact on captive heat treating.
Mr. Martin Beaton, Regional Director - Great Lake Region, Bodycote
International. Martin oversees a number of Bodycote plants in Canada,
the US and Mexico and is one of the top managers at Bodycote in
North America. In our opinion one of the most competent individuals
in the industry and a person that has a direct impact on a number of
heat treating decisions.
Bill Bernard, Surface Combustion, (new Furnaces). When introduced
in the last century Surface Combustion's, "Allcase" batch IQ furnaces
completely changed the direction of heat treating. As owner and
President of the company Bill has had a direct impact on the industry.
Mr. Howard Boyer- Editor of the ASM Metals Handbooks and the
Heat Treaters Guide.
Steve Graham, American Axle. Steve is in charge of Heat Treating for
American Axle, one of the largest captive heat treaters in North
America. Like all the individuals on our list his decisions have a large
bearing on which way the industry goes in the future.
Mr. Daniel Herring, (The Heat Treat Doctor) Herring Group. The only consultant in our
group, Dan's opinions have helped shape the course of heat treating for a number of
companies.
Bill Jones, CEO of Solar Atmospheres, Souderton, PA. (Commercial vacuum heat treating)
and Solar Manufacturing (new vacuum furnaces). Bill is a true innovator whose research
into vacuum heat treating furnaces has had a very definite impact on vacuum heat treating.
Zia Karim has from an aerospace heat treating perspective played a major role in the
development and institutions of Nadcap. At Nadcap he has held the longest position as staff
engineer (not to mention at one time he was the only one global wise) forging alliances with
Boeing and Aerospace primes to bring them on board. As NADCAP has had such an impact
on the industry it is only fitting that Zia is mentioned.

The Keough Family. Bob, Bill and Chip. While semi retired at the age of 91 Bob was one
of the pioneers of austempering, Chip as President of Applied Process (commercial salt heat
treating) and Bill as President of AFC-Holcroft (new furnaces) have all had a very definite
impact on the industry.
Mr. Michel Korwin, President of Nitrex Metal Inc., Montreal, Quebec. Michel is probably
more responsible than any other individual in North America for the growth of Gas Nitriding.
In addition his efforts to form a controls group are likely to also have an impact on the
industry.
Janusz Kowalewski, Seco Warwick, Meadville, PA. Janusz has proven to be an innovator
who has taken Seco Warwick (new furnaces) into new directions.
Professor George Krauss- Colorado School of Mines who has authored
many books for ASM on Heat Treating.
Bob McCulley, Chrysler, Kokomo, Indiana. As head of one of the largest
captive heat treating operations in North America, Chryslers', Kokomo,
Indiana transmission plant, Bob's decisions have a direct impact on the
course that Chrysler takes when it comes to heat treating.
Rich Penrose, President and Owner of California Brazing. While the
position of President of MTI (Metal Treating Institute) is more ceremonial
than anything, the President does influence the decisions that this
organization makes. Rich is the 2007 President and in addition he has
been a pioneer in the brazing field.
Mr. George Pfaffmann- Ajax Tocco- Induction Heat Treating. It
surprised us the number of Induction "guys" that were suggested for our list. George's
name came up on such a regular basis that his inclusion was a very easy decision.
Bob Peaslee, Wall Colmonoy Corp. (captive and commercial heat treating and brazing).
This is an interesting choice. We personally at "The Monty" have never met Bob or spoken
with him but his name came up more than anybody else's (with the exception of John
Hubbard) in our suggestions and we respect our reader's choices.
Ben Rassieur, CEO Paulo Products. No way can we ignore the President of the largest
privately owned heat treat group in North America.
Dr. Valery Rudnev, Inductoheat, Madison Heights, Michigan. A name we are very familiar
with and which a number of people mentioned as a real innovator in the Induction heating
industry.
Gary Sharp, Owner and President of Advanced Heat Treat Corp. in Waterloo, Iowa. Many
years ago when Ion Nitriding was introduced to the North American heat treating market
the technology got off to a very rocky start and languished for many years in the wilderness
of heat treating. Gary saw an opportunity and has grown Advanced into the largest

commercial Ion Nitrider in North America with the effect that it is now after many years
seen as an excellent technology in certain applications.
Mr. Carl Spezio, CEO of Bluewater Thermal the largest US based commercial heat treater.
Carl took Bluewater from a division of Gibraltar Steel to an independent heat Treating
Group, Bluewater Thermal. His actions have created a real change in the industry.
Steve Stormzand (Bosch/DTC) Pioneer in plasma nitriding and HPGQ. A name we are not
familiar with but several individuals suggested Steve as having brought about changes in
the industry because of his interest in Plasma (Ion) Nitriding and High Pressure gas
quenching.
Bill Thompson, founder of both Marathon Monitors and Super Systems (furnace
control systems). While Bill did not invent the oxygen probe his effectiveness in bringing it
to market has meant it is very unusual to see a furnace without an oxygen probe and
changed how all heat treaters in North America control their furnaces.
Dr. George Totten- Union Carbide Corporation who over the years has provided very
extensive knowledge about quenching. A very well known individual within the industry.
Dale Weirs, Boeing, who is pushing the envelope when it comes to heat treating, Boeing
is an enormous captive heat treater, a major outsourcer of heat treating and as the man in
charge of these decisions Dale certainly influences the direction of heat treating in North
America.
Mr. Martyn Wilton, President of Bodycote, North America. While John Hubbard, CEO of
Bodycote International has been suggested as the most influential individual in the North
American heat treating industry it is only fitting that the President of Bodycote, North
America also been included on our list.
Business Opportunities. Metallurgical Engineer with an enormous amount of heat
treating experience is looking for a new position. Technical Sales Person with Vacuum
Heat Treating experience is required for a PA based commercial heat treater. Experienced
Heat Treat Salespeople are always hard to find, however today we have just such an
individual. Recently we added a Canadian commercial heat treat plant that is looking for an
experienced heat treater to act as a General Manager/Plant Manager. In addition to a
number of experienced individuals looking for positions within the industry we have several
companies with positions available that need to be filled immediately, including our most
recent opportunity a Quality Engineer in Southern California. Other positions available are
an immediate position for a Journeyman Maintenance Mechanic in a Heat Treat Shop, a

AFC-Holcroft/JSC Nakal. A few short years ago very few manufacturers regarded Russia
as a large potential market, Holcroft is one of the few heat treat equipment suppliers I am
aware of that did much business in Russia. That has changed and a few suppliers are now
dedicating resources to the growing Russian market. As you can see from the press release
below AFC-Holcroft is investing time and money into growing their business in the
country.September 29/09
“(September, 2009) AFC-Holcroft, headquartered in Wixom, Michigan, has signed an
exclusive distribution agreement with JSC NAKAL, located in Solnechnogorsk, Moscow
Region (Russia). Under this agreement, NAKAL will be providing sales, service, parts and
support of AFC-Holcroft equipment in the partnership area, which consists of Russia, the CIS
countries and the Baltic Region. NAKAL was founded in 1992. It has accumulated vast
experience in the area of heat treatment. The company started with promoting its services
in aerospace and defense industries, gradually moving to developing and manufacturing
heat-treatment machinery for other industries. Currently, it is the largest electro-thermic
equipment manufacturer on the territory of the Russian Federation. The company focuses
on development and manufacturing of heat-treatment furnaces, melting furnaces for nonferrous metals, drying ovens and laboratory furnaces for all industries. NAKAL has its own
Research and Testing Laboratory of Heat-Treatment Machinery where they test and develop
new thermo-chemical solutions such as catalytic gas nitriding. Manufacturing facilities of
NAKAL are located in Moscow Region, Russia, and include over 8,000 square meters of
production area with welding, metal treatment, insulation, painting and other specialized
equipment. All manufacturing is done on-site with all required manufacturing equipment
owned by the company. Staff members of the company include research workers that
develop new heat treatment technologies. There is also the control system department,
developing the most sophisticated and state-of-the-art computer process control systems,
including the ones for the furnaces with protective atmosphere. “As our major decision, we
want to leverage our strengths to capture the same market share in AFC-Holcroft’s Russian
market as we have in North America” says Marc Ruetsch, Director of European Operations
for AFC-Holcroft. Ruetsch will also be responsible for the sales of service and spare parts
expansion. “With the help of our Russian partners, we will increase our product range
considerably in this market.” Nikolay Ityaksov, General Manager of NAKAL, also sees a great
deal of advantages in cooperation of the companies. “Everybody benefits from this alliance.
Our company gets a chance to benefit from vast experience of the American company and
ready-made solutions for our customers. On the other hand, AFC-Holcroft significantly
enlarges its presence in the above-mentioned markets. Moreover, manufacturing companies
that use these furnaces and equipment will also benefit from our alliance, as it improves
accessibility of the equipment produced by one of the world leaders, as well as service
support and pricing.” “The close collaboration with NAKAL Industrial Furnaces is a strategic
decision for us, allowing us to build on our large installed base of furnace equipment in this
region” says AFC-Holcroft’s Vice-President, Bill Disler. “As a leader in heat treatment
equipment technology, we will be able to better support our existing Russian and CIS state
customers as well as develop new customer relationships. We will continue to make
adjustments in our organization to support our global activity as we expand our footprint

around the world.” AFC-Holcroft has more than a hundred installations in the former Soviet
Union, with Holcroft brand equipment installed in a diverse range of plants.”

Used Equipment Available. For Monday September 28th/09 we have these suggestions in
the way of well priced used heat treating equipment, a Buehler Versamet 3
Metallograph, a Closed Loop Cooling system and 14 Hydrogen Generators. New
arrivals include a Surface Combustion 72” Allcase Line which has 2 Hi Heat furnaces,
charge car, tempers and a bunch of extras all for $210,000 USD-an amazing price. Also new
are a very large Aluminum Drop Bottom Oven, Low Temperature Ovens and
Combustion burners. We have just added several brand new Blue M High Temperature
Furnaces. Along with a number of other items we just posted a listing for a Como Quench
Oil Filtration Unit and a 48" Diameter Lindberg Pit Furnace. An interesting offering is a
complete Batch IQ Heat Treating Department. The listing is far too complete to list here
but the centrepiece is two Super 30 Allcase furnaces in immaculate condition with an
excellent asking price. Asking price is $250,000 USD or best offer but they were completely
rebuilt in late 2008 at a cost of almost $400,000 USD. Super 30 Allcase Batch IQ furnaces
are always reasonably popular even in this market. We have both complete lines and 2
Super 30 Furnaces, 1980’s vintage, good condition with an asking price of $45,000 USD
each. This is a small selection of our listings and remember if you don’t see what

EPA/Greenhouse Gas Emissions. September 22, 2009 the US Environmental Protection
Agency signed the final rule having to do with reporting methods for greenhouse gas
emissions (CO2, Nox, etc.) Based upon the information below (we have included two
excerpts) it would appear to us that this will only apply to companies using in excess of
456,000,000 scfh (465,100 decatherm I believe) of natural gas annually which brings up a
question which I can’t answer-how many companies doing captive or commercial heat
treating will this apply to? Whether it applies to many heat treaters now doesn’t matter-in
the not too distant future all heat treaters will be responsible for monitoring and reporting
greenhouse gas emissions with some form of carbon tax or cap and trade scheme following
close behind. At the risk of veering into politics I firmly believe that the whole issue of global
warming is based upon incomplete, self serving research and that the only end result will be
one of the largest transfers of wealth the world has seen. As far as I am aware the only
area of North America that currently has a form of carbon tax is the province of British
Columbia on the Pacific coast of Canada. This carbon tax was introduced approximately 1
year ago and while carbon taxes are just slowly ramping up just try asking a heat treater in
BC what he thinks-it’s is starting to get damn expensive! September 28/09

“Under the rule, suppliers of fossil fuels or industrial greenhouse gases, manufacturers of
vehicles and engines, and facilities that emit 25,000 metric tons or more per year of GHG
emissions are required to submit annual reports to EPA. The gases covered by the proposed
rule are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons
(HFC), perfluorocarbons (PFC), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and other fluorinated gases
including
nitrogen
trifluoride
(NF3)
and
hydrofluorinated
ethers
(HFE).

The second method of calculation applies to any facility that does not have a listed source
located at its facility, but through its fuel combustion capacity alone it meets or exceeds the
25,000 tons CO2e emissions level. To make it easier for such a facility to determine whether
it falls over the threshold for reporting, EPA provides a two-part test:
(1) The facility must have an aggregate maximum heat input capacity of all stationary
combustion units of 30 million Btu/hr or greater, AND
(2) The facility must emit over 25,000 tons of CO2 annually. If a facility does not have a
total of 30 mm Btu/hr capacity, it is exempt from the reporting rule - period.”

Cambridge Heat Treat/Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. I have been harassing the
Robbins family (owners of this medium sized commercial heat treat in Southern Ontario) for
quite some time to let me take a picture of the upgrades to their plant. Now that the plant is
finished you can see the end results (previously we posted photos of the vacuum
department). This operation operates batch IQ, vacuum, nitriding and car bottom furnaces.
The company has been around for quite some time and up until recently had two plants,
both of which have been consolidated into this very impressive location. All of these
upgrades to Cambridge have taken place in the hardest hit area of North America for
commercial and captive heat treating, Ontario, Canada. September 28/09

Wall Colmonoy’s Brazing School. The popular three-day brazing course from Wall
Colmonoy Corporation is returning December 8-10, 2009. Started by the late Robert
Peaslee in 1970, Wall Colmonoy continues his tradition by utilizing his years of mentoring
with our current instructors. The school will be held in the new Brazing Engineering Center
at Wall Colmonoy Aerobraze Division in Cincinnati. The Brazing Engineering Center will
provide engineering services and training. The course content includes: brazing design,
metallurgical aspect of modern furnace brazing, brazing material selection, brazing
operations, quality control, real life applications and case studies. Included will be a new
half day of practical experience on the shop floor. Attendees are encouraged to bring their
brazing issues to the “Problem Solving Sessions”. For more information, prospective

Ford/Sterling Heights II Plant. Probably any long time furnace salesman will tell you the
same thing-it is always upsetting to see good furnaces cut up for scrap however that
appears to be the way of the world these days. The second (and smaller) Ford components
plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA largely closed down recently (there is still limited
production) and the question became what to do with the surplus heat treating equipment.
What they had was absolutely top notch and in great shape; 2 fairly new Endo Generators,
2 beautiful 6 row pushers installed in 2001 and some other miscellaneous items. The
generators were sold to a local used equipment dealer, the 6 row pushers scrapped. Very
unfortunate but at the end of the day there is virtually no demand for large pushers largely
dedicated to one particular product. I certainly can’t fault Ford for this decision but again
what a shame to see good multimillion dollar furnaces lines cut up for scrap. September

Green Vacuum Furnace Hot Zones. A reader recently posted the question “what causes
vacuum furnace hot zones to sometimes turn green-water?” A reader responded recently
and now Nathan Smith of G-M Enterprises gives us some further thoughts. September

“Victoria, The green color in a hot zone can be water…..but…It is more commonly
“Chromium Oxide” contamination. At a low vacuum (10-4) above 1800 F, Chromium is
being “vaporized” from braze alloys, stainless alloys, thermocouples, etc. There is almost
always some residual water vapor in a furnace out-gassing from the surface of the cold wall

and in the residual atmosphere (remember it is not a “perfect vacuum” of zero, some gases
remain). This water vapor reacts with the chromium vapor and forms “chromium oxide”
which is green in color. Chromium oxide has a relative high vapor pressure, so it is usually
not burned off during high temp clean up runs. I believe its vapor pressure to be near
2375 F at 10-4 Torr. A lot of clean up runs in vacuum furnaces are not run this high,

Heat Treating Brazil. The recent ASM Heat Treating exposition as usual brought together
captive and commercial heat treaters from around the world. I got to speaking with a fellow
originally from India who now owns a commercial heat treat operation in North America-the
topic of conversation was how various countries had faired during the current (or past)
recession. Our shared feeling was that no country had been spared and from this starting
point we moved on to heat treating in South America and Brazil in particular. Now as it
happens there were several captive and commercial heat treaters at the show from Brazil so
I was able to speak with at least some authority about the market there. Brazil with far and
away the largest economy in South America (and one of the 10 largest in the world) has
over the years become a major producer of auto parts, both because of the size of the
economy and its protectionist attitude towards imports. Because of this (and you know
where I am going) heat treaters have been just as devastated as any country because of
the downturn in the auto industry. Brazilian heat treaters have by and large seen a
downturn similar to their North American counterparts with 50% being not uncommon. To
add some facts to this story Bodycote International within the past year and a half closed
two plants in the country, Contagem and Campinas and apparently is now concentrating on
more specialized, high end heat treating as opposed to the low margin, high volume
production work (the Bodycote plants in Brazil were originally Brasimet until Bodycote
purchased the company in late 2006). While the general feeling seems to be that Bodycote’s
main competitors, Maxitrate and Combustol will ultimately profit from this, at current
production levels they are seeing very little sign of this. So if you feel that “the grass is
greener on the other side of the fence” think again. Very few heat treaters around the world
have not been seriously affected by the past year of crap and Brazil has experienced
declines similar to every other country. September 24/09
ASM Heat Treating Exposition. Tracy Dougherty, of AFC Holcroft (new furnaces) offers us
some thoughts about the recent heat treating show in Indianapolis, Indiana. September

“Dear Gord: Here are some thoughts on the recent ASM Heat Treat Show in Indianapolis,
Indiana: As predicted, traffic at the show was down from previous years. But despite the
lower attendance, we were quite heartened to hear from many long-time customers as well
as new prospects about new, funded projects – many now on the fast track after a long
time gathering dust. We overheard more than one visitor indicate their funding had been
approved only days before the show. It would appear that many companies watching from

the sidelines have decided the time is right to prepare for increased production, and with it,
the investment into capital equipment. It was refreshing for our sales and engineering staff
to hear that production is increasing, and so too are plans for coming projects with firm
deadlines and specific delivery dates. We were also pleased with the degree of interest in EZ
Lynks, our alternative to traditional pit furnaces, which made its North American debut at
the show (www.afc-holcroft.com). The ASM Heat Treating Expo prides itself in attracting
an international audience, and AFC-Holcroft, in addition to having sales representatives from
East Coast to West, also had a number of international partners in attendance, including two
of our agents from Combustol in Brazil, several from Shanghai Powermax in China, Director
of European Operations from Switzerland, as well as Carlos Torres Sr. and Carlos Torres Jr.
of MATTSA in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, and a certain individual from Mississauga, Ontario
(Gord Montgomery) who unfortunately was not available to join in debate with our British
guest that on this side of the Pond, they are French fries – not chips. All in all, our sales and
engineering staff came back with the impression that the heat treating tide has made a
positive, tangible shift, and we hope that global heat treating market is at last returning to

Westinghouse Specialty Metals/Seco Warwick. “Westinghouse Specialty Metals Plant in
Blairsville, PA has purchased a High Vacuum Retort Annealing Furnace to process zirconium
tubes. Westinghouse is increasing their plant capacity to meet the needs of customers in
both China and the United States. The Vacuum Annealing furnace is custom engineered to
meet the exceptionally tight uniformity standard of ±5ºF in the 48 inch x 6 inch x 216 inch
hot zone. The furnace is rated for 1200ºF and will be equipped with a cold cap High

Linamar Machine/Inductoheat Order. Do your recall the news item below in which
Inductoheat was justifiably proud of their recent order for a dual frequency gear hardening
system? We posted this press release and promptly forgot about is until we ran across the
end user-Linamar Machine in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. This auto parts maker has been
growing by leaps and bounds over the years (which says a lot right there) and has become
one of the largest users of Induction heating equipment in North America. As a fellow

Inductoheat Order. Let’s go to the world of Induction Heat Treating (which I always consider
a world unto itself when it comes to heat treating) for a press release from one of the

Slacan/Brantford, Ontario, Canada. What a pleasure it is to see a manufacturer and
captive heat treater that does not know what to do with the business. Slacan located in
Brantford, Ontario makes (among other things) clips involved in power transmission lines.
Because of a number of large projects in North America involving new power transmission
lines, Slacan finds themselves in the very enviable position of having more business than
they can handle. Because of this their small batch IQ heat treat department (1 furnace)
found themselves overwhelmed which lead to the purchase of a used Surface Combustion
“Super 30” Allcase line. Total cost of the line was a little under $100,000 and installation will
be around $50,000. While not yet installed it is expected that the equipment will be running
in the fairly near future. September 22/09
Induction Atmospheres/GH Electrothermia. This press release tells us how GH has
purchased a majority interest in Induction Atmospheres of Rochester, NY. While I am not

familiar with GH I am certainly familiar with Inductions Atmospheres as you can see from a

Green Hot Zone. In answer to our question about what causes a hot zone to turn green in
a vacuum furnace we have this suggestion from a very qualified reader. September 21/09
“Hi Gord: Just ran across this article. I'd have to see the hot zone to be certain, but this
sounds like common chromium coloration that results from long periods of running tool
steels, or sometimes from running them without partial pressure. Traces of chromium

evaporate from the work pieces and deposit in the hot zone. Over time, they oxidize to
chromium (III) oxide, turning the hot zone greenish. I suppose that this can come from
any steel that contains chromium, and faster or slower depending on the chromium content
and the time & temperature. Best, Joe”
Green Hot Zone. While I have a good working knowledge of vacuum furnaces and hot
zones I have never claimed to be an expert. Recently I was discussing the hot zone of a
used vacuum furnace that we will be listing. The hot zone appeared to be in reasonably
good shape but had a slightly greenish tinge (not bright green) but certainly greenish. My
understanding was that this is caused by a water leak in the furnace; however another
fellow claims that while this is quite possible there are other factors which could come in to
play such as contaminated parts. So my question is; is a greenish coloured hot zone always
caused by water? And secondarily how much importance should be attached to this?
Suggestions from any of our expert vacuum heat treaters would be appreciated.

ASM Heat Treating Exposition/Gear Expo. As promised we are providing a little more
feedback and comments about the recent show in Indianapolis, Indiana. Below we have
these comments from Thom Passek, Executive Director, ASM. As you will realize these were
“off the cuff” comments” which are always more valuable in my opinion. On another note
several readers chastised us for not mentioning one of the highlights of the show, a
highlight which I still think came about because of Bill Keough, President of AFC-Holcroft.
The “official” hotel of the show was the Westin which also happened to be the site of the
AFC-Holcroft Sales Meeting on Tuesday morning. As it turned out the Westin was also the
location of the 2009 “Playboy” talent search which was directly across the hall from the
sales meeting. You would have a difficult time convincing me that this was not arranged by
Bill Keough as a means of assuring 100% turnout (which is what happened of course).

“Gord, I thought I would drop you a line to thank you for the kind words about this year’s
HT Show in the Monty. As the Executive Director of the Heat Treating Society we certainly
had some trepidation about this event given an economic climate that most of us have
never experienced. We really went into it with the intent of ‘not having any regrets’ and
doing whatever we could to provide a positive and worthwhile experience for the volunteer
organizers who put this together, the speakers and attendees at the event and very

important, the exhibitors who without their support, this event would be difficult to sustain.
Although we still have room for improvements, I’m proud of what the Heat Treating Society
along with our ASM Staff Team was able to provide the community. It truly was a team
effort and I am thankful that a third party such as yours would recognize and appreciate
that – I know if you didn’t, you would have printed a different message. We expect that it
will only get better in 2011 when we return to Indy the week of September 11th along with

ASM Heat Treating Exposition/Gear Expo. The ASM Heat Treating Exposition in
Indianapolis, Indiana, USA is now over (although the Gear Expo has one more day to run)
so let’s have a look at the reaction. Due to the current economy (mainly travel cutbacks)
the expectations for the attendance at this show started off very low at the beginning of this
year and progressively dropped as we got closer and closer to the actual dates to the point

that most exhibitors were expecting a complete and total disaster. HOWEVER this did not
prove to be the case. Granted attendance was lower than most if not all ASM shows I can
remember but from a personal level I was pleasantly surprised at the number of attendees
and the seriousness of those attending and I know for a fact that most exhibitors feel
exactly the same as I do. I give credit to ASM for the amazing job they did in boosting
attendance and at the end of the day feel they did a top notch job of promoting this event.

Stanley Bostich, Rhode Island, USA. This is the final note to a heat treating story that
started earlier this year-March to be exact. Manufacturer and captive heat treater, Stanley
Bostich suffered a fire earlier this year which caused them to reconsider heat treating in
house. In March the decison was made to outsource to a local commercial shop and the AFC
batch IQ furnaces put up for sale. They have now been sold and the story is over. The only
other comment we would make is that while some captive heat treaters are reconsidering

heat treating in house what we are typically seeing is the small to medium sized
manufacturers with large captives generally sticking to heat treating in house StanleyBostitch/Rhode Island. The news item below was posted March 29/09. Our understanding it
that the company had decided not to restart the heat treat department but rather to
outsource the work to a local commercial heat treater. September 16/09
"Stanley-Bostitch Fire. Manufacturer and Captive Heat Treater Stanley-Bostitch in East
Greenwich, Rhode Island, USA suffered a small fire in their heat treating department this
past week. According to the news report below it was very localized and the flames
extinguished within 15 minutes which is quite a feat. EAST GREENWICH, R.I. -- A fire at the
Stanley-Bostitch plant 2375 South County Trail this afternoon was put out in about 15
minutes, fire officials say. East Greenwich Fire Lt. Stefan Coutoulakis said that when
firefighters first arrived, smoke was coming from the center of the roof. Flames were in the
ceiling of a heat treatment area on the first floor, he said. The fire may have been caused
by an exhaust fan malfunction. Smoke was coming from the center of the roof, Deputy Fire
Chief Peter Henrikson said, and ladder trucks were sent to both sides of the building. They
needed 400 feet of hose to reach the spot, he said. A 50- by 30-foot section of the metal
roof was damaged, Henrikson said. Compared to the size of the building, the damage was
minimal, he said. East Greenwich Fire Chief John L. McKenna said that mutual aid "worked
to perfection," with Warwick, North Kingstown and Coventry providing assistance to East
Greenwich. About 40 firefighters were involved, he said. A off-duty Newport firefighter
watching from Route 2 said the departments did good job of working in tandem and called it
a textbook operation." March 29/09
ASM Heat Treat Show. Over the course of the next few days we will have a number of
pictures of the ASM Heat Treat Exposition and Gear Expo on the site along with our regular

Irwin Industrial Tool Company/DeWitt, Nebraska, USA. Plant closings have slowed
down but on a regular basis we still run across manufacturers with captive heat treating
departments closing down-such is the case with Irwin Industrial Tool a manufacturer of vise
grips located way out in Nebraska. The auction of the remaining equipment will be held
September 29th and 30th, 2009 and besides the manufacturing equipment will include a
number of older continous and batch heat treating furnaces which in my humble equipment
are not going to excite too many people. Continuing in this vein I am still surprised at the
unrealalistic value some people still have about used heat treating furnaces. Recently we
were approached by an indiviudal who has acquired the equipment from a commercial heat
treater in TN, Old Hickory-a plant which closed down some time ago. This has to be the
most run down, out of date equipment we have seen in quite some time and yet the asking
price was $200,000 USD. Good equipment still fetches a good price, old junk is
basically worth scrap value these days. September 15/09
ASM Heat Treat Show. It has begun, the 2009 ASM Heat Treat Exposition and Gear Expo.
For those involved in sales to the industry heat treat shows entail an endless round of sales
meetings such as the one in the photo below. This particular sales meeting is "Dibalog"

Hercules Heat Treat/Dibalog. It was very recently that we visited this top notch
commercial (largely aerospace) heat treater in Brooklyn, NY, USA and did a small write up
about them (which we have included below). They pop up again today because they have
invested for the future in the form of a Dibalog Energy Optimization system. Based upon
electricity rates in NY State the savings over the years are enormous. September 14/09
"Hercules Heat Treating Corporation/Brooklyn, NY, USA. When you are asked to meet with
"Big" Tony Rizzo in Brooklyn you approach the meeting with some trepidation, however my
fears were unfounded. Tony (President), Joe (Vice President) and Anthony (QA Manager)
Rizzo run a really cool commercial heat treat by the name of Hercules Heat Treating that I
visited this past week. Hercules is interesting for a number of reasons in that as far as I
know it does entirely aerospace work, is family owned (60 years now) and is located in an
area that I don't think of as a hotbed of heat treating-Brooklyn, NY (New York City). The
equipment consists of a number of fairly new vacuums, some very large salt pots and
Aluminum drop bottom capacity. Because of the fact that it is entirely aerospace the
company has been spared most of the effects of the current recession. It's always a joy to
meet people who enjoy their work and are proud of their history and background and the
Rizzo's fit this bill perfectly-super nice bunch of guys. Their real pride is the fact that they
specialize in "straightening" of parts, Joe in particular gave me a very detailed tour of the
equipment they use to ensure the utmost possible tolerances. As for being in Brooklyn they
claim this is a real bonus as they do work for companies around the world and Brooklyn
(unknown to me) is close to an International airport, maritime shipping and major
highways. So if you ever are invited by Tony Rizzo to see his operation take it from me you
won't regret the visit."
ASM Heat Treat Show/Gear Expo. Monday September 14/09 is the start of the ASM Heat
Treat Show & Gear Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. ASM has done an absolutely
amazing job of organizing this event-the big question will be whether industry cutbacks will
limit attendance. Be that as it may we at “The Monty” will be at the entire show and will
give you a number of updates including photos of this, the premier heat treating event of

Who Are They? Scan down a couple of items to our note about “Who Are They” and the
rather dated picture that accompanied it. The individual in the photo is Ken Hinckley who
was very prominent in the commercial heat treating industry in the US Northeast for a
number of years with companies such as New England Metal Treating (owner) and Steel
Treaters Inc., in Oriskany, NY. The original photo of Ken Hinkley was taken in the 70's
while he was a janitor at Chrysler before he finished his education and became a Heat Treat
Engineer. This is a more recent photo is of Ken and the owners of one of Thailand's up and
coming Heat Treats WPN. Ken is now semi retired and still active in the Industry as a
consultant based in Asia.

Texas Vacuum Solutions. A regular reader in Houston Texas, Texas Vacuum Solutions
(vacuum furnace installations and rebuilds) has been enjoying some success recently and
would like to share the details with us. Apparently they recently completed installation and
commissioning of a vacuum brazing furnace for American Aeromotive. The project
included hot zone installation, panel upgrade and reprogramming of PLC with a touchscreen
to make the unit more user friendly. American Aeromotive joins Southwest HT
(commercial heat treating) as a very satisfied customer of Texas Vacuum Solutions.

The Winds of Change-The Sequel. It is still a puzzler to me why some news items
generate such enormous interest while others sink without a trace. In this particular case
our regular contributor David Pye sent us a posting yesterday entitled “The Winds of
Change”. David’s response to this was overwhelming from captive and commercial heat
treaters around North America. Based upon this we present the sequel. September 11/09
“When the article regarding the ‘Winds of Change’ was published on The Monty, the reader
response has been quite startling and very positive. The change is upon is and no matter
who we are, what we are, whatever company we are or how large our company might be,
or conversely how small our company might be, each of us in our own right (employer or
employee) are being both stretched and tested in no uncertain terms. If do not grasp the
changes that are upon us, we will fall, and not catch up as a manufacturing nation. We hear
the term globalization. Yet globalization is not new. Think of Marco Polo, and Christopher
Columbus. They were pioneers of international trading and exchange of manufacturing
technology. The United States is perhaps one of the most junior of nations to enter the
international manufacturing arena. I recall living in England during the WW11 war years
when we in England were reliant on the USA for survival But in the recent years we seem to
have lost the international marketing skill and market share. We seem to be losing some of
our process technology in this day and this moment in time. Maybe we need this economic
crisis to awaken the USA to what was once a great manufacturing nation We are being
overtaken by countries like China, India, Taiwan and the likes. Yet we here are falling

behind. One has only to look at one of our largest retail chain stores, that is also domestic
and look at the manufacturing labels. If you failed geography at school, then you can see
countries almost like we have never heard of as manufacturing nations. We take in foreign
students into the colleges of leaning in both the sciences and liberal arts. They take our
knowledge back with them and we lose. This economic crisis that is upon us is (to me) a
wakeup call. I believe that we will see consolidation, jobs and positions that have not yet
been invented. We will have new ways of generating cash flow, of literally staying alive. We
need our combined think tanks to be activated and new business ideas to be generated so
that we can bring them to the table at such venues as the joint venue we will see next
week. I do not believe that the idea will lose. It will win!! The next ASM/Gear Manufactures
show, I believe that there will be another partner that will come to the table. Such as for
example, the foundry industry, the aluminum industry, the machine tool business Growth
has started; the momentum is upon us let us grasp it with both hands and learn from our
new and present experience. Remember that everything is cyclical! This economy WILL turn
around!! We are just not sure when. But let us all, each and every one of us, young and old
be ready to embrace the Winds of Change. The two countries to which the statement was
directed are both enormously successful countries now and are technological leaders in their
own right. South Africa has become (without doubt) the power house of Africa, simply
because of consolidation and embracing the winds of change. Ghana also embraced the
Winds of Change and captured the vision. It is a strong economical contributor to the

[email protected] was obviously feeling very “philosophical” when he wrote these
thoughts about the upcoming ASM AGMA show and what the future holds for the heat
treating industry. September 10/09
“In my lifetime I have heard the expression that ‘The winds of change are upon us’. I first
heard it during my life in England and was expressed by a British politician by the name of
Harold MacMillan. He used it in a speech to the Government of the Gold coast in Accra
(which is now Ghana).That speech was given on the 10th January in 1960. He subsequently
used the phrase to the government of South Africa in Cape Town on the 3rd of February
1960. The contest that Mr. Macmillan used the phase was to for the respective governments
to embrace the coming political changes that were perceived to be on the horizon. South
Africa was to be granted independence from the British Commonwealth of Nations was to be
a country in its own sovereignty. There was no apparent perception of how events would
unravel. Ghana was given its independence shortly after the speech and South Africa’s
independence was one year later. What has this got to do with today? The American Society
of Materials has coined the phrase into a positive growth and amalgamation of technology
today. For many years the ASM Exposition and Conference have been a standalone
exhibition and exposition. The time is ripe with the current business climate that change
occurs, and that change has arrived. If we do not embrace that change, it could be our
demise. With ASM now partnering with the American Gear Manufacturers Association, I
believe that a most positive step has occurred. It is the first step into growth and
expansion. One has only to look at the GIFA exposition in Dusseldorf Germany, with its 5
concurrent expositions and programs of learning and new technology. The attendance at
this exposition is extremely large comprising of very wide range of international visitors. It
is held to allow industry to develop and present new technology both for process and
metallurgical developments. It is refreshing to the writer to see that the two organizations
are partnering together to bring new technology to the industry. Heat treaters heat treat
steel, gear manufacturers use steel as a manufacturing base material. So it makes perfect

sense for the two organizations to join together for the common good of the industry that
we belong to. I believe that we will see future exhibitions and conferences coming together
to expand the visitor attendance, because there is so much industrial overlap. Not only with
the thermal processing industry that it begs us to embrace each other’s technology and
consequently the growth of our individual industry’s. The winds of change are upon us in
more ways than one. I believe that the face of our industry is changing dramatically
because of the economic recession that we are in. I believe that there will be jobs developed
during these next few years that have not been invented yet. We are being forced into new
ways of operating, of marketing, of operating and most of all developing cash flow
strategies. I believe that we will see much more of the use of electronic communication
made; we will see more consolidation and strengthening of organizations. But most
importantly we will see growth. This is a time of excitement, because we are grooming
ourselves for future business.”
Who Are They? From time to time we have "where are they now", prominent individuals
within the heat treating industry that have changed positions, a very good example was just
yesterday when we mentioned Scott Workman changing positions. Today for a change (at
the suggestion of one of our readers) we have "who are they'? This photo obviously taken
some years ago shows an individual who was very well known in the heat treating industry
in the US Northeast. While he is no longer involved in heat treating in the Northeast he is
still very active in another geographic area. Want to take a guess as to who it is?

Where are they now? Scott Workman. This very experienced Metallurgist has seen the
North American heat treating industry far more than most heat treaters. Over the years he
has worked at Byington Steel Treating in CA, Musashi in SC and most recently at Arvin
Meritor in Tennessee. Scott is on the move again this time to Guandong, China where he
will be Senior Metallurgical Engineer at Trax/Fuwa Crop, a new business venture making
drive train components, suspensions and axles.September 9/09
Ipsen HybridCarb. Several weeks ago we had a banner ad on this website from Ipsen
(new furnaces) in Rockford, Illinois, USA about a new process they are introducing called
“HybridCarb”. A reader in Germany asked for more details (question below) and in response
the new CEO of Ipsen in North America, Geoffrey Somary gave us this background on the

and hardening in sealed quench furnaces! But how do it works and what are the advantages

New Heat Treaters California, USA. Surprisingly enough in this economy two new
commercial heat treaters are in the process of setting up shop in Southern California. The
first is "Class A Braze" located in Corona, CA, an operation that will offer mesh belt brazing.
I gather the company is either in production or getting close. The second is located in
Ontario (LA area) of California and will have available batch IQ furnaces besides some other
processes. Our understanding is that this will be run by an ex employee of Torrance HT
(Torrance, CA) which closed down some months ago. It is a hard way to make a living
commercial heat treating but I have seen many individuals start from nothing and build up
good, successful businesses. I wish both of these companies the best of luck. September

Solar Atmospheres. Continuing on today with the heat treating market in California we
come to Solar Atmospheres, the largest commercial vacuum heat treater in North America.
Bill Jones, CEO has these comments about their planned operation and I can relate to Bill, it
is a tough decision when investing this much money. September 8/09
“Solar Atmospheres of California. We announced more than a year ago to enter the vacuum
heat treating market in the Los Angles area. We hired a president, Derek Dennis, and
opened an office in Temecula and proceeded to search for a suitable plant site. We found
such a site in Perris, California and arranged for $12 million in financing. In the last quarter
of 08 the bottom dropped out of the entire heat treating market, particularly Titanium, as a
result of delays with the Boeing 787, and other Ti markets. The HT market proceeded to
slide further in the 1st quarter of 09. As a result, in March of this year we decided to delay
our California investment for six months to see if the over all market will stabilize. Solar is a

private company with all investment backed by current Solar operations and the Jones
family. Although Solar combined sales and operating profit have improved, we are still
testing the market to proceed with this major investment. Everything is in place to go
forward and we expect to make a decision by November 1, 2009. William R. Jones, CEO

Powdered Metal Transmission Components. Powdered metal components have been on
such a growth curve over the years that I was very surprised to hear recently that a PM
transmission component for General Motors will be switched from PM with vacuum
carburizing to cast with Induction hardening. What the reasoning is behind this (just cost
perhaps) I do not know but the fact remains that this is a major turnaround in thinking.

Electrical Costs/Industrial Steel Treating. Located in Jackson, Michigan, USA, Industrial
is one of the largest commercial heat treaters in Michigan and amongst the larger in North
America. An article in a local newspaper about their electrical costs (link below) recently
caught our attention and one comment in particular is worth mentioning. In the article is
this statement; "When comparing June's bill to the June 2008 bill, his company's energy
usage was 37 percent less, he said, but his bill was only 3 percent less." It's interesting that
we have been running across this on a regular basis and while there are a number of
possible reasons for usage being substantially lower but costs the same or higher there is
one main reason-peak demand charges, I will explain. Electrical bills are based upon total
usage and a peak demand charge which is the highest 15 minutes of usage for any given
month. When business is steady and a plant is operating 24 hours a day/7 days a week the
total power being used remains relatively steady which means the peaks are not dramatic.
However what most heat treaters are seeing these days is very inconsistent demand, full
bore one day, very little work the next which translates into irregular power usage and very
dramatic peaks. Bottom line-many heat treaters are in the very unusual situation of using
less power without a corresponding drop in the total bill. Doesn't seem fair but that is the

Award --Hermitage, Pa. — Solar Atmospheres of Western PA president Robert Hill Jr. has won the
prestigious 2009 Titanium Achievement Award from the International Titanium Association.
Hill’s development of vacuum thermal processing solutions for the aerospace industry,
including the utilization of the world’s largest car bottom, high vacuum furnaces, has earned
him the international recognition. “I am completely thrilled, feel blessed and supremely

honored to win this award,” Hill said. “Considering my years of work in the titanium market,
this award represents the pinnacle of my achievements.” The ITA’s Achievement Award
distinguishes those whose contributions have made significant advances in technology and
applications for the titanium industry. Hill is one of only twelve men to receive this honor,
which will be awarded at the ITA’s annual conference, TITANIUM 2009, on Sept. 16 at the
Hilton Waikoloa Village, Hawaii. “We reviewed a number of highly qualified nominees and
the individual that clearly rose to the top was Robert Hill,” said Dan Buwalda, plant
manager, Alcoa Power and Propulsion, Whitehall, MI, and chairman of the Achievement
Award selection committee. “He is recognized as a pioneer in developing titanium vacuumthermal processing solutions for the aerospace industry.” Since Solar Atmospheres of
Western PA began operations nine years ago, Robert has invested in advancing titanium
processing capabilities as a major focus of the business. In conjunction with heat treating
applications for large structural parts for the Boeing 787, the Hermitage site has obtained
the approvals to meet Boeing’s Beta Anneal Slow-Cooled Aged (BASCA) 160 specifications,
which involves the vacuum heat treating of forged parts using VSMPO’s Ti 5553 alloy. Solar
Atmospheres of Western PA is the only facility in North America that has received this

Gates Canada/Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Gates Canada (formerly Stackpole) has
always been one of the most progressive powdered metal automotive companies in the
world and was also the first in the world to get involved in vacuum carburizing. As we
mentioned earlier this year the Automotive Gear Division in Mississauga, Ontario became a
victim of the current crisis in the automotive industry and it was announced that it would
close late in 2009 with some of the work being transferred to other Gates plants. However
(and this good news) because of an upturn in the auto industry the plant will now remain
open until June 2010. It's a small reprieve and I would hope that the decision to close the
plant will eventually be cancelled however this is extremely doubtful so the best we can
foresee is another 6 months of production. September 2/09
Super Alloy Technologies/Chang Mai, Thailand. A reader in South East Asia sent us
two photos of a pair of vacuum furnaces which after a very roundabout route ended up
installed at a company by the name of Super Alloy Technologies in Laum Phun (Chang MaI),
Thailand. Apparently in 2002 this 800kg, 6 bar vacuum furnace and small lab furnace were
manufactured in China and shipped to Super Alloy Technologies in Australia. There they
were commissioned by Andrew Fitchett of www.alstechnologies.com.au a furnace

rebuilder and new furnace builder. In 2004 they were sold and shipped to Thailand and
installed inside the Kultorn Metal Products factory in Lat Krabong (Bangkok) Thailand and
recommissioned by James Beason. Now they have found their way to the Super Alloy
Technologies factory located in Lam Phun (Chang Mai) Thailand and are being
recommisioned again. The furnaces will be used for commercial heat treating and Sintering
of Titanium. Super Alloy Technologies manufactures a large range of Titanium products that
have included golf heads for Nike, Ping, Calloway, as well as solar receivers and a patented
one piece skate board. As far as we know they are the only company that sinters Titanium
in Thailand and the only commercial heat treat within 400 miles. September 1/09
Scrap Pricing. I am constantly shocked by how many captive and commercial heat treaters
are getting screwed up, down and centre by scrap dealers when it comes to old HT, HU and
330SS fixtures, baskets and furnace components. I recently ran across a large captive
operation that was being offered 10% of the actual value of his scrap material by a local
scrap dealer. Obviously not all dealers are crooks but please do your homework before you
accept the first offer that comes along. Nickel pricing has gone up meaning scrap has gone
up. If you want to know what you should be getting let me know and I will give you a range
and it will be a heck of a lot more than $1.50 USD/pound for HU material which is what I

Musashi South Carolina/Bennettsville, SC. I'm not entirely sure whether all the
information in this news item below is 100% correct however the bottom line is that auto
parts maker Musashi in SC will be closing the plant. The reason of course that we mention
this is that this location had a very nice captive heat treating department consisting mainly
of Dowa (Japanese) pusher carburizing lines of a fairly recent vintage. As we speak the
furnaces are being dismantled and starting within the next week or two they will be moved
to other locations. August 31/09
"The Musashi Group will close its operation in Bennettsville by the end of the year. Human
Resource Manager Ravonda John confirmed this Tuesday. She said the production operation
could close as early as the end of October, which would leave only the shipping part of the
business to operate through December. Some of the operations already have been moved
to Thailand and to Michigan, and the remainder will be moving to Japan, John said.The
company has been downsizing for some time, with the most recent large layoff taking place
in May. There currently are 157 employees at the Bennettsville plant, whereas there were
315 just a few years ago. This impending closure is unwelcome news for Marlboro County,
which was second-highest in the state in terms of unemployment last month, with 21.7
percent. But it was not totally unexpected. In fact, company officials announced in March of
this year that the Musashi Group was considering closing the Bennettsville plant and would
make a final decision once they’d had a chance to assess all the risks and cost benefits
involved. At the time, John said Musashi, like so many other companies, was suffering from
the global economic crisis, a downturn in the automotive industry and an inability to
increase sales. The company laid off 54 employees in January and about 60 more in May."
Geoffrey Somary/Ipsen. In December of 2007 we rated Ipsen Inc. in Rockford, Illinois,
USA as one of the two largest new furnace builders in North America and we have no reason
to think that this has changed. It has been an extremely tough year for new furnace
builders and while Ipsen has faired as well or more probably better than most others in this
industry obviously Ipsen's parent company in Germany felt that a change in management
was in order. As you can see in the press release below former President and CEO John
Schmitt has left the company and the number two person in Rockford, Geoffrey Somary has
taken over. Geoffrey is an aggressive, competent individual and it will be interesting to see
what happens. Searching through our archives the only photo we could find of him is the
one below taken when he was introducing the "Titan" vacuum furnace, Geoffrey is the
individual in the large overhead screen. August 31/09

Dongwoo Surface tech India Pvt. Ltd. Surprisingly enough after readership in North
America our next largest market is in India. The result of this was a reader there sending us
information about his commercial heat treating and furnace building location in Mappedu
Village. His summary of the company and the shear size of it make for interesting reading.
Dongwoo is a 100% subsidiary of Dongwoo Surface tech Korea which is the largest
commercial heat treater and furnace builder in that country. Recently they built a new
commercial heat treating and furnace manufacturing operation in Mappedu Village which is
located about 10 miles from the Hyundai Motor plant. The plant primarily heat treats auto
parts, in particular gears for Hyundai and is capable of processing 120,000 pounds/day
which is not an enormous volume until you consider this is high end heat treating-primarily
gas carburizing. The manufacturing facility is capable of building most types of furnaces but
really specializes in roller hearth furnaces, batch IQ furnaces and Gas Carburizing/Salt
quenching batch furnaces typically used for transmission gears to reduce distortion. On the
commercial heat treating side of things the companies’ main customers are Hyundai,
Timken, Taeyang Metals (fasteners), DAS India (seating systems) and Iris Manufacturing
(sheet metal parts). On the new furnace side of things their largest customers are JMT Auto,
Uyshiro Bhumwoo India and Hyundai Motors. From what I can tell from the pictures this is a

ASM Show/Gear Expo. Coming from a purely heat treating background I have been
rather negligent in not emphasizing that the upcoming ASM Heat Treat Show & Conference
in Indianapolis September 14-17th will be held in Conjunction with Gear Expo and will
include the AGMA Fall Technical Meeting. What is interesting is that at least two of the large
commercial heat treaters, Bluewater and Woodworth will be exhibiting at the Gear

AFC Holcroft/Wixom, Michigan, USA. Last week in Detroit I had the opportunity to tour
the AFC Holcroft (new furnaces) facility in Wixom, Michigan something I have not done for
some time. While the new furnace business has not been strong in North America for some
time I was impressed by the number of furnaces under construction-at least 6 that I saw.
While no customer names can be mentioned and some of the furnaces can’t even be hinted
at I did receive approval to take a photo of one of the furnaces under construction, a 10’
diameter rotary hearth furnace which will be used for hardening prior to a press quench

Item #C236 Rotary Hearth Furnace and Press Quenching Units. This line consists of
a 26’ diameter, gas fired rotary hearth furnace, mesh belt temper and 2 press quench units.
All built and installed in 1984. Furnace door opening is approximately 36” X 24” high which
means the line can handle parts up to 36” in diameter. This was run at 1600F but the new
refractory is good up to 2100F. 2100 pounds/hour. This can be used as either a 13 position

Uses a 36" x 36" tray with a 20" high door opening. A typical roller hearth cycles at a preset
time and advances the load, one tray at a time, through the furnace. Based on the
dimensions, the normalizing furnace should hold 13 trays at a time and the tempering
furnace should hold 16 trays. If you advance the normalizing furnace every 18 minutes, you
will move a tray through the furnace in about 4 hours. If you advance the tempering
furnace every 15 minutes, you will move a tray through the furnace in about 4 hours.
Both the high heat and the temper have atmosphere. The high heat max temperature rating

What Is A Commercial Heat Treat Shop Worth?
We're going to have a rather Simplistic look at what a commercial heat treat shop is worth
and offer you a very cost effective way of getting a very precise idea of what your shop is
worth. Right off the bat, the worth of a Heat Treat shop or any business for that matter is
based upon performance. A business losing money is basically worthless, a business making
lots of money is worth a great deal. So we're starting off with the basic premise that the
value of a business is based upon profitability. When it comes to commercial heat treaters,
the general rule of thumb is that to a potential buyer it is worth somewhere between 3 and
6 times EBIDTA (Earnings before Interest, Depreciation, Taxes and Amortization). Keep in
mind though that this multiple is based upon an average profitability over the past 4 or 5
years.
From this starting point we throw in a few other factors such as capacity. A shop running at
less than full capacity (but still making money) is surprisingly worth more than a shop
running at full capacity. Logically this makes sense. A new owner can increase sales and
hence profitability without having to make a further investment into the business in the
form of more equipment.
Geography always is an issue. A shop in a growing healthy area seeing an increase in
manufacturing will always be worth more than an operation in an area seeing stagnant
growth. From our own experience, I can tell you that we get a lot of requests for
commercial shops in the US South east, an area seeing high growth and virtually no
requests for the US Northeast, an area seeing slow or no growth in manufacturing.
Capabilities are again another factor that always goes into the mix. Processes that are
growing such as vacuum heat treating, vacuum carburizing and Ion Nitriding will generally
appeal to potential buyer's far more than very basic stress relieving as an example.
Management. While the large HT chains might have the ability to drop in new management
to replace the outgoing owners, I have yet to see a case where having the original
management stay for some period of time was not an enormous plus.

Customers. Show me a shop (and I've seen this in the past) where 60% of the work is
coming from one customer with no long term contract and I will show you an operation that
is unsaleable. The best product mix would be a number of medium sized customers (none
amounting to more than 10% of total sales) involved in a number of different industries
such as aerospace and automotive.
