Brian Wilson, the main creative force with the Beach Boys, brought a 10-piece band of very talented musicians and his jukebox of classic surf rock hits for everyone to enjoy. This famous composer, arranger, producer and musician was joking with the excited audience, engaging with stories about his songs, having sing-a-longs, and really enjoying himself as he played keyboards, bass and sang with incredible musicians that harmonized beautifully. Classic like, their first hit in 1961 “Surfin”, “Good Vibrations”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Help Me Rhonda”, California Girls”, God Only Knows” and the hit list goes on and on—amazing how many hit songs they had. One of Tahoe’s favorite bands Tower of Power comes to Harrah’s January 16 and 17. Their funky soul music makes you feel good all over, I love these guys! For over 40 years, Emilio Castillo on tenor sax and vocals and Stephen “Doc” Kupka on baritone sax have kept this funky soulful band together. Francis “Rocco” Prestia on bass guitar, was also right there in the beginning in the late 60’s when their sound was created. Original member Mic Gillette on trumpet and trombone is back touring with the boys along with drummer David Garibaldi, another original member. They perform in Europe and Japan where the fans love to hear “What is Hip?”, “So Very Hard To Go”, “Down to the Nightclub”, “Your Still a Young Man”, “Soul With a Capitol S”, “Don’t Change Horses”, “Soul Vacation”, “Oakland Stroke”, “Still Digging on James Brown”. Tower of Power has a universal sound that is loved by many worldwide. Their horn section has recorded with so many diverse groups from Santana to Elton John. Roger Smith on keyboards and vocals played Tahoe for many years and then his dream came true, he joined Tower of Power. Smith also has his own Jazz CD’s that are on the top of the jazz charts. This is a must see show for all music lovers. I’ve known Emilio for many years, lots of good times. Welcome back to Tahoe Tower of Power. Also coming to Harrah’s January 9th is MC Hammer. January 23rd is Air Supply. January 30th is Chubby Checker. February 5th Starship featuring Mickey Thomas. I recommend getting Tower of Powers new CD, Great American Soul Book that features Joss Stone, Sam Moore, Tom Jones and Huey Lewis. The Tahoe Adventure Film Festival that was at MontBleu showroom was a huge success once again. Hosted by Todd Offenbacher from RSN-TV, who creates a party atmosphere for this event, puts together short clips from adventure films that are unreal to watch. Like Alex Honald’s free solo climb of two huge big wall classics from Zion to Yosemite, was amazing to watch. Then to see him in person on stage getting an award from Todd that they give out each year was super cool for everyone. The World’s biggest Tahiti swells for surfers was a big WOW also. The Tribute of Ski Legend Shane McConkey was very heart whelming. Offenbacher himself has rock climbed all over the world and is truly talented in his own right also. And the Go-GoGirls is always another added bonus to this fun Tahoe event. Their showroom has The Legends of Motown January 16th to perform. I enjoy going on KRLT 93.9 radio and promoting the Lake Tahoe Entertainer with program director and DJ Steve Harness each month. Tahoe info and laughsalways a good time-Thank You. Their Freakie Phat Fridays with every style of music starts at 6am with Howie Nave and goes all dayvery cool music. Lakeside Inn had a fun ULLR party to get ready for winter. The locals love Lakeside for great food and drink specials. Whiskey Dicks has a variety of live music to check out and over 100 beers to choose from. Have fun, you’re in Tahoe! It’s been a tough year somewhat tougher for others. Stress factor was amped up this past year so one of my resolutions for 2010 is to not let things stress me out at all. Problems still persist whether stressed out or not so best to go with the attitude of a duck letting the water just roll off of me. No getting pissed at shitty motorists (within reason) they’ll get theirs eventually. The other resolution I’m going with is to just live in the moment. Realize that this is the last time this memory will happen so do everything possible to make that moment the best ever. Oh yeah and more flexibility too. If you’re rigid and don’t budge you just snap. Being flexible helps you cope with whatever life or self-destructive people have to throw at you. So those are just a few New Year’s Resolutions I’m going to stick to. Join me won’t you? One guy who epitomizes being in the moment is Chicago comedian John Caponera. He really does have a good time with what life has to offer and brings that to the stage. He’s a huge fan of sports too incorporating into his act some of his favorite sports announcers. When not in Chicago ‘Cap’ (his nickname we call him) is constantly writing and pitching new comedy sitcom ideas. In fact both he and best bud Rocky LaPorte wrote a pilot that starred both of them and of course based in Chicago. Past television appearances include “The Good Life” and hosted Comedy Central’s “Jocks” and ESPN’s “Talk II.” He gueststarred on NBC’s long running hospital drama, ER, “Love & War,” “Blossom” and one of my favorite shows, “Tales From The Crypt” on HBO. Then there were slots on “The Tonight Show, “ “The Dennis Miller Show, “ “L.A. Law, “ NBC’s Miniseries, “Drug Wars,” “The John Laroquette Show, “ “The Drew Carey Show, “ “The Espy Awards” and a host of other TV shows that I can’t remember. J. Malham Jr. of The Chicago Tribune wrote of Caponera, “Every so often the kingdom of comedy is graced with a gifted, naturally refined performer who can effectively demonstrate the transcendental powers of the medium while making it look deceptively easy.” Performing with Cap is newcomer Tom Segura. Both are here the week of January 6th through the 10th. I just performed with him last month at The Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley. What a ride too. Bobby Slayton is known for his sardonic jabs and cutting wit that earned him the name, “The Pittbull of Comedy.” A name that was given him years ago that still holds true today. He’s been in a lot of movies including “Dreamgirls” and “Bandits” with Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton and Cate Blanchett and directed by Barry Levinson. Slayton’s role was that of Darren Head, the host of a tabloid TV show called “Crime Stoppers,” who has been following the exploits of two bank robbers (Willis and Thornton). Bobby’s other movie appearances include “Loser,” directed by Amy Heckerling and starring Jason Biggs and Mena Suvari. Bobby was also in “Third Wheel” starring Ben Affleck and Luke Wilson. On the cable front Slayton costarred as “Joey Bishop,” opposite Ray Liotta and Joe Mantegna in the critically acclaimed HBO original movie “The Rat Pack.” One of his best roles though was on the criticallyacclaimed HBO series “The Mind of the Married Man.” Bobby’s character was called, well, “Slayton.” Bobby also taped his own half hour comedy special, produced by Open Mike Productions, for Channel 5 in the United Kingdom. The special, taped several years ago at the Comedy Store in London continues to be a raving success. You can catch Slayton in “The Aristocrats” which is currently available on DVD. It would be insane to list Slayton’s credits but one stands out in particular. He appeared only one time on The Tonight Show when Johnny Cason was at the helm. Carson was about to retire soon but not before he was treated to Slayton’s set. Bobby cracked up Carson so much that upon completing his set was invited to panel with Johnny which of course was the biggest boost for any comic’s career when starting out. He was the winner of the San Francisco International Stand-Up Comedy Competition, made numerous late night talk show appearances, specials on HBO and Showtime as the list goes on and on. If you offend easy this will be the show to miss but if you like your comedy serve up brutally honest you what to do. Performing with Bobby is first timer to Tahoe Nikki Glasser Jan. 13th through the 17th. Nobody is more the Facebook/online freakoid than comedian Dat Phan and that is meant as a compliment. I think 1 out of every 5 postings has something to do with Dat on Facebook. When he can tear himself away from Facebook he’s finishing up his latest film project. His latest movie, “When in Rome” comes out early this year and is produced by Disney. The movie includes Kristen Bell from “Sarah Marshall” and Jon Heder from “Napoleon Dynamite” along with Danny DeVito, Anjelica Huston, Dax Shephard and Will Arnett. A literal rags to (almost) riches story it wasn’t that long ago that he was living out of his car and barely eeked out an existence. Things paid off dramatically though when NBC launched a comedy-based reality show called “Last Comic Standing.” This being the very first time for the new show the talent scouts were focusing primarily on unknown talent that had never been a late night talk show. The first season would be a launching pad much like “American Idol” does when tapping into unproven, untried talent. It worked and it opened doors like crazy for Dat. After winning that competition Dat was all of a sudden all over the comedic landscape. Say what you will (and many comics have) the once unknown Dat Phan soon found himself on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” appeared in his first half hour comedy special on Comedy Central and made his first major motion picture with Kim Basinger in the drama, “Cellular.”On stage much of Dat’s material stems from his family background and is an integral part of his humor. “It was my mom that raised me,” Phan said. “That's why so much of my material is based on my mom. Eightyfive percent of my material is true.” Performing with Dat is yet another first timer to Tahoe Michael Pascak. Both are here January 20th through the 24th. Howie Nave is the host/emcee/ manager of The Improv @ Harveys every Tuesday through Sunday. Howie also hosts his own morning show (“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on 93.9 KRLT radio Monday through Friday from 6 to 10am and now you can see him Monday through Friday at midnight on his very own television show, “Howie’s Late Night Rush” on RSN, or you can order a copy on his website, www.Howienave.com and make sure you check him out on Facebook at http:// www.facebook.com/howie.nave. The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Lake Tahoe's Hit Show's MC Announces Retirement Horizon Casino’s Carnival Cabaret announced that host James “Gypsy” Haake will have his final performance on December 31, 2009. James Haake, better known as Gypsy, has hosted Lake Tahoe’s hit show Carnival Cabaret since its start in February 2000. Gypsy has performed in more than 1000 shows at the Horizon Casino since the show’s opening. Gypsy was the original Master of Ceremonies for the cabaret shows “La Cage Aux Folles” when they started in the early 1980s after the success of the blockbuster film of the same name. Gypsy also opened the La Cage cabaret in Atlantic City, and the most famous one in Las Vegas. Gypsy got his big break in the Beverly Hills celebrity hot spot in 1983 when actor Mel Brooks and his wife Anne Bancroft came to see La Cage’s female impersonators. Brooks cast Gypsy in his film “To Be Or Not To Be.” From that point forward, Gypsy’s star continued to rise. He appeared in such TV shows as the “Fall Guy”, “Dynasty”, “Mike Hammer”, “Hollywood Wives”, and his most famous TV role as Peg Bundy’s Uncle Otto in “Married With Children”. Gypsy also appeared in feature films like “The Morning After” with Jane Fonda and shared the screen with Shelley Long in “Troop Beverly Hills”. Carnival Cabaret producer Dan Gore says, “Gypsy has paved the way for many people, myself included, and countless performers in this quirky industry. He’s a one-of-a-kind M.C. and will be missed greatly. I am grateful and honored to have shared almost a decade with Gypsy in my show, Carnival Cabaret.” Carnival Cabaret is Horizon Casino’s blockbuster celebrity impersonator revue, originally opened in February 2000. The show ran for four consecutive years at the Horizon Casino and became the longest running show in the history of Lake Tahoe. The Horizon Casino brought back its most successful show in September 2008. James Gypsy Haake will be succeeded by two new Master of Ceremonies: Patrick Ross, Carnival Cabaret performer veteran of over eight years, and Dennis Werntz, the only female impersonator to ever perform at the Grand Ole Opry. For Carnival Cabaret show information, please call the box office at (800) 683-8266. The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Fly Fishing Can’t really say the fly fishing is going to be great at this time of the year, but it can be if the weather cooperates and you don’t mind fishing in the cold! Or Go Ice Fishing! There are quite a few choices for fly fishing when it comes down to it. The East Walker River is probably number one and the rest kind of depend on your willingness to drive and or suffer the conditions. Pyramid Lake can be good, The Little Truckee River can be good, The Yuba River can be good as well as the American River if you want to chase Steelhead or you can make the pilgrimage to the Trinity River with all the others that can’t help themselves! Steelheading is an addiction that can only be cured by a good day on the water and not all Steelheading days are good days or should I say days that you catch fish! When it is good it is really good and you get that feeling of accomplishment and when it is not, well let’s just say it can be frustrating at best… If none of these do it for you, like I said earlier, Go Ice Fishing! If you end up on the East Walker River you will need some tiny stuff like Midges in size 20 & 22 as well as Baetis Nymphs in 18 & 20 and possibly the use of flies we can barely see let alone tie on… Those flies that take a young eye to thread or tie a knot to! I just can’t see them anymore and when I can get one tied on by some fluke and if it is on the surface I don’t even bother trying to keep track of the drift and I set the hook when I see a rise within a mile of the fly. It works but not the best way to do it. Or, fish a San Juan Worm which always seems to take a fish or two whatever time of the year it might be! And when all else fails, Stay home or Go Ice Fishing… The American River opens up for Steelhead fishing on New Years Day and the flows are in good shape this year! This could be the year of the Steelhead on the American and it is an easy drive over Highway 50 and closer than the drive to the East Walker! Glow Bugs, Beads, Caddis Nymphs and Stonefly Nymphs for Nymph rigs and Leech patterns for the guys that like to swing the old fashion way… My favorite spots are the areas just below the hatchery off of Hazel Avenue or along the American River Parkway above Sunrise Blvd. Look for the fish to be holding in the seams, tail outs and in the side channels! Don’t forget your Steelhead Card that is a requirement when fishing waters with Steelhead… You probably thought I was kidding about the Ice Fishing! Actually it has been quite good this year with all the fish they put in to Caples Lake this past season. Find a hole or drill your own with the best spots being along the first dam and at the Spillway area just before Kirkwood. Jigging, soaking worms and power bait will all produce fish! If they don’t seem to be biting, switch holes until you find one that is working. Red Lake is also a good choice and usually the catch there is Brooke Trout! My favorite method is Jigging with a ¼ oz. Kastmaster or with a Crappie Jig tipped with a piece of corn, the kids love it Victor Babbit anyway! If you have never tried Ice Fishing before and would like to give it a shot, we are offering guided Ice Fishing trips to Caples Lake this winter and it makes for a great family outing! For more information on these fisheries or any others in our area, give us a call at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and we will be glad to point you in the right direction or take you out on a guided adventure. We can supply everything you might need for a day on the water or Ice for that matter! We can be reached at 530-541-8208 or stop by the shop at 2705 Lake Tahoe Blvd. next to Midas Mufflers and about 3.5 Miles from the Casinos! Good luck fishing and Happy New Year! The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by The Lake Tahoe Entertainer Online brought to you by Another Late Night with LateNiteBilly Wow! It was really good to be back in Tahoe and see all the familiar faces and all the new ones! I was out on Girls Gone Wild Tour for three months and can tell I was truly missed by the response when I saw everyone for the first time again! I have nothing but love for you Tahoe!! I came back to three shows. “How the Grouch Stole Christmas” was completely sold-out in Reno, and in Tahoe the following day, very near capacity at Bar 24. Truly a dope show featuring The Grouch & DJ Fresh, Mistah FAB & Tito Bell, Fashawn & Exile, Luckyiam & Sapient as “The Prime”, plus Reno’s Who Cares and a great way to go out with a bang as Bill’s Casino will have shut its doors for good by the time you read this. I have to thank Mike Leeper and the entire crew over at Bar 24 for all the great times. Next, we saw Dirt Nasty at Whiskey Dicks and it’s been a while since I’ve had a show over there but for my first time back – we packed the house and there’s more to come, I promise! As you can imagine, I had the time of my life working for Girls Gone Wild and love the new opportunities that I have been afforded. I am going back out on the road (still searching for the hottest Girl in America!) in 2010 and am making this a full-time gig! Girls Gone Wild is producing a new reality show that will be airing on HDNET Television beginning the end of January and I will be a big part of it! It is called “Search for the Hottest Girl” and is based on the life of the Girls Gone Wild Film Crew! Watch for me and our crazy adventures! But, don’t worry, I will still be bringing you lots of great shows while I am out on the road! Let’s talk about what I have coming up so far this month….. First, on Sunday, January 17th at Whiskey Dicks – “The Dope Winter Ball Tour 2010” featuring Tash (Tha Alkaholiks), The Bayliens, League 510 and DJ True Justice. Tash He is most known for his work as a member of West Coast hip hop group, Tha Alkaholiks alongside J-Ro and E-Swift. He has also worked alongside Artists such as Xibit, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Black Eyed Peas, Outkast, Kurupt and more. Tash is 100% finished with his new solo album, Control Freek on the Amalgam Digital label. The album was released June 2009. It features appearances from B-real, J-Ro and King Tee and production by Will.I.Am, Maestro, and J. Wells and ready to rock Tahoe AGAIN! Next, on Friday, January 29th at Whiskey Dicks long time Tahoe favorites - Lou Dog Trio, A Tribute to Sublime will take the stage once again! Who is going to miss over two hours of every Sublime song they ever knew – Live in Concert! And I have to say, as good as you are ever going to hear it, ask anyone that’s been to one of their packed shows (and packed with Ladies)! Original roots reggae rockers from San Francisco, Audiodub will start off the night. Last for January and the very next night, Saturday the 30th, the return of Vancouver, Canada Hip-Hoppers, Sweatshop Union plus very special guests O.C.T. / Outta Control. With tens of thousands of albums sold and hundreds of shows rocked, the word of mouth is spreading about Sweatshop Union's style of conscious lyrics, highly musical beats, and high energy live shows that far surpass the average hip hop concert. They have solidified their position as one of Canada's top selling independent hip hop artists. In a time when hip hop music remains soulless and simplistic in the eyes of the mainstream, Sweatshop Union remain driven to deliver a deeper, more meaningful sound into the conscience of the masses. Now, one more thing: read this, remember this, and tell your friends. No overpriced concerts here. Plain and simple, buy your tickets in advance at Whiskey Dicks, Mad About Music or online at www.Ticketweb.com and each show above is only $10.00! I’m hooking you up! If you sleep and buy them on the day of the show or at the door, it will be $15. Each of these shows are dope and well worth the money so get your tickets early! Don’t forget, you can follow my Girls Gone Wild adventures on Twitter, Facebook and MySpace /LateNiteBilly.
