MESSAGE
KGS Silver Jubilee
In
the world of golf we speak of the four
major championships, referred to as The
Majors (the British Open, the US Open,
the Masters and the PGA in that chronological
order). In the realm of anniversaries there are
also four major celebrations, referred to as The
Jubilee to mark an event of great historical
significance in the life of people and places: (the
Silver Jubilee to mark the 25th year, the Golden
Jubilee for the 50th year, the Diamond Jubilee the
60th year and the Platinum Jubilee for the 70th
year). In this third quarter issue of The Golfer an
editorial will focus on the KGS Silver Jubilee. By
the way, the word “jubilee” itself comes from
an old Hebrew word which roughly means “a
period of liberation”, or “a season of joyful
celebration” or “a day of remembrance of
events that mean so much to us in our life”.
In biblical times when Hebrew slaves were to be
liberated or when alienated properties were to
be restored, etc. such an event was, naturally,
welcomed with joyful celebration by the people
who were affected by the bondage of slavery
and the shackles of oppression, etc. The word
“jubilation” which has now crept into popular
poems and songs comes from a less common
use of the term. Now you know why we place
such importance on the forthcoming KGS Silver
Jubilee, and justifiably so.
KGS Silver Jubilee
which we will not know, nor understand, and may
not even appreciate how it all began and how on
earth we got here in the first place.
Look at what KGS is today. Twenty-five years ago
only a visionary could have discerned into the
future twenty-five years away. Yes, “life is but
a walking shadow, a poor player, that struts
and frets his hour upon a stage, and then is
heard no more; it is a tale told by an idiot, full
of sound and fury, signifying nothing” (William
Shakespeare). Many of those who took part in the
demonstration mentioned earlier have passed on
to the world of the hereafter, may their souls rest
in eternal peace. I am sure they too would not
mind to swallow a bit of a bitter pill of wounded
pride if they were still around. We would have
extended a warm hospitality to them to join in the
Silver Jubilee celebration. As guests they would
be most welcome at the same time to witness
the growth, prosperity and the development of a
clubhouse they strongly despised and refused to
accept. I hope that those who are still around will
accept the fact that life is indeed unpredictable.
Taking a peek into the club’s twenty-five-year
history (correction: thirty years, to be exact) this
place was originally a virgin jungle where cobras
slithered through the undergrowth smoothly
with uninterrupted pace. Monkeys and squirrels
among other wild life roamed freely on the
premises at that material time. When an idea was
mooted to turn this piece of primal forest land into
a thirty-six-hole championship golf course facility
complete with a clubhouse and other sporting
and recreational facilities the likes of which
Kuching had never seen before, there was a furor.
Many in the golfing fraternity were skeptical, to
say the least. A more strident group even went to
the extent of staging a demonstration opposing
the move when they learned that the proposed
golfing facilities at Petra Jaya was meant to
replace the substandard nine-hole golf course
operated by Sarawak Club in the city centre, the
present site of Dewan Suarah.
Of course, it is time to celebrate KGS Silver
Jubilee in style, fanfare, pomp and pageantry.
The jubilee, to the ancient Hebrew slaves, was
a time of rejoice because they were liberated
from the bondage of slavery and the shackles
of oppression. For us here at KGS, we have had
a different kind of history not at all connected
with servitude or that of the exploitation of man
by man. So, we celebrate this Silver Jubilee to
mark an important milestone in the annals of
our club life, our life. A silver jubilee is such an
important event no one wants to miss joining
in the fun celebrating it. We are as you may
well know about four years behind time. But
the spirit of jubilation is still alive and strong.
We won’t miss celebrating it for anything else.
Yes, indeed, it is better late than never. There is
plenty in store for you by way of fun and games,
sports competitions, recreational pursuits,
entertainments, indoor and outdoor activities
and-what-have-you. There is no doubt about it.
All will be pleased to know that an exciting time
is right ahead. Every participant willing to join
in the fun will have plenty of fun. That is not an
empty promise.
As you can see, the beginning was a somewhat
checkered, or shall we say, turbulent past,
brief though it might have been. But it has to
be properly recorded to reveal a genuine and
authentic account of Sarawak Golf Club history.
Always bear in mind that a doctored historical
document is a useless trash not fit for the
archives but could only fool future generations of
information seekers. Therefore, in that regard we
only accept a true historical record. That agitated
past was an important fact to remember without
An event organising committee is currently
busy at work preparing for a master plan and a
working plan to ensure that implementation of all
programmes will be carried out to perfection with
clockwork precision. Let us hope that all will go
according to plans and the Silver Jubilee events
scheduled to take place for one whole week
from 19th November to 25th November 2012
will indeed be a great success. A list of activities
lined up to commemorate the Silver Jubilee is as
follows: (1) Racquet Games - Badminton, Tennis
4 • The Golfer
and Squash Competitions; (2) Fun Swimming; (3)
Blow Pipe Competition; (4) Chess Competition;
(5) Drawing Competition; (6) Fishing Competition;
(7) Golf Competition; (8) Food Fair, and (9) Last
Day High Tea at 3:00 pm on 25th November
2012. Judging from what would take place
between 19th November and 25th November by
way of physical activities on the club premises, it
is safe to say that there will be plenty of lucrative
prizes to be won arising from those numerous
competitions on offer. My advice to all able bodied
avid sportsmen and sports women of KGS is to
get ready and get well prepared for the exciting
Jubilee bash. Keep yourself fit with regular
workouts at the gym and use the swimming pool,
the running tracks regularly to build sufficient
stamina, strength and endurance to withstand the
rigour of physical tests in the coming weeks. It
is said often enough that “Fortune favours the
brave”, or “Nothing venture nothing gained”,
and all those stale clichés! That’s fine by me if you
want to be just a passive bystander. It’s OKAY
with me too if you want to be an active participant
of this historic Silver Jubilee. You decide. Once
you have made up your mind make sure to bring
along your guests, relatives and friends to be part
of the fun. The more the merrier!

Acting Captain’s
MESSAGE
It is sad to know that we have lost the service of our Club Captain Mr.
Patrick Chieng who has tendered his resignation from the captaincy of
the Club for health reasons. On behalf of the Management Committee
and members of KGS, I wish to say a big THANK YOU to Patrick for his long
services and contributions as the Club Captain. Patrick who is recuperating
well in Australia has indicated that he misses all his friends here and will
be back to Kuching to meet them sometime end of the year. We all look
forward to meeting him.
KGS team participated in the 25th Sarawak Inter-club Challenge Trophy
held at Sarawak Club Golf Resort in July and for the first time in the history
of the championship our team managed to bring home the Challenge
Trophy. Congratulations to KGS Team!
Following the month of Ramadan and Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration, golfing
activities began to pick up once again with the organising of Transview
Golf on 26 August and Hari Raya Open House Golf on 2 September.
The month of September will witness the organising of Members’ Night,
Pusaka Golf and Captains’ Alumni Golf followed by the hosting of the
mega event, the Professional Golf of Malaysia Sarawak Masters in early
October. All golf enthusiasts are welcome to witness this prestigious event.
The Club is still looking for a resident golf professional and has recently
advertised in a national paper as well as in an international website. I
seek the patience and understanding of our members in the Club taking
extra time in search of a suitable coach for our members as well as for
the junior golf development programme.
Happy Golfing!

8th KGM Junior Golf
Championship 2012
(Dato Sebastian Ting Challenge Trophy)
6 -7 June 2012
A total of 7 junior players from Kelab Golf Sarawak participated in
the 8th KGM Junior Golf Championship 2012 (Dato Sebastian Ting
Challenge Trophy). It was a good learning experience for our junior
players who took part for the first time in a tournament outside our
home ground.
In Boys B, our club junior member Arthur Loh came in 6th out of
20 participants which is an encouraging achievement. For Boys D,
Matthew Peregriine Ong played well by winning 2nd place after Eng
Wei Jin from Singapore. Elden Sim and Warren Sim also from our
club came in 3rd and 4th respectively.
With the commitment and support from the club and parents, we
hope to have better results for future tournaments.

18 HOLES
SHORT GAME
COMPETITION
In early July, an 18 hole short game competition
was held at the practice green & bunker behind
the driving range. This was a test of skill for the
juniors. It was an exciting moment after the
18 holes game, where a play off was needed
to decide the winner for putting, chipping &
bunker play.
The overall gross winner went to Arthur Loh.
The competition ended with lunch at the Golfers
Terrace followed by prize giving and lucky
draws. The next short game competition will
be in three months’ time and we hope to see
more juniors, joining the competition.

Atlanta homicide detective Patrick “Tick”

to have a great time reading while learning
a good life lesson from real kids their own
age? That’s exactly what Chicken Soup For

country club didn’t allow women on the golf
course. Eventually, there was enough pressure
that they decided to allow women on the course
during the week. The ladies were satisfied with this
arrangement, formed a women’s club and became very
active. After about 6 months, the club board received a
letter from the women’s club complaining about the men,
urinating on the golf course. Naturally, they just ignored
the matter.

So he called Eric, the 13 year-old next
door, whose bedroom looks like Mission
Control, and asked him to come over. Eric clicked a couple of buttons and solved
the problem.
As he was walking away, Mike called
after him, “So, what was wrong, Eric?” Eric replied, “It was an ID ten T error.”
Mike didn’t want to appear stupid, but
nonetheless inquired, “An ID ten T error?
What’s that, Eric? In case I need to fix it
again.”
Eric grinned.... “Haven’t you ever heard of
an ID ten T error before?”
“No,” Mike Moulder replied. “Write it down,” Eric said, “and I think
you’ll figure it out.”
So Mike Moulder wrote it down: IDI0T Mike Moulder used to like Eric a lot but after
the incident, he never called Eric anymore

As for Glen, it was a case of “the spirit

After dinner that evening, he confided

He said, “Do you think the doctor

Aftershave
William Penn, Democratic Governor of Georgia and Greg
Perk, Republican Governor of Florida had a round of golf
with their political buddies in two separate foursomes.
After the game of golf, both headed for the same barber
shop.
As they sat there, each being worked on by a different
barber, not a word was spoken. The barbers were even
afraid to start a conversation, for fear it would turn to
politics. As the barbers finished their shaves, the one who
had Greg Perk in his chair reached for the aftershave.
Greg Perk was quick to stop him saying, ‘No thanks,
my wife Michelle will smell that and think I’ve been in a
whorehouse.’
The second barber turned to William Penn and said, ‘How
about you sir?’ William Penn replied, ‘Go ahead; my wife
doesn’t know what the inside of a whorehouse smells like.’
Buying In China
Sanji went for a golfing trip to Shenzhen with a few of his
friends. After a game of golf, they went to the club’s pro shop
to buy some gifts for his kids. At one corner of the shop, he
found a nice looking CD player. Wary of buying inferior goods,
he asked the pro shop dealer, “What would happen if this does
not work?”
