That Was Only the Beginning Nov 19, 2016 07:50AM One of the songs in Hamilton says, “history has its eyes on you”—and when Vice President-elect Mike Pence saw the Broadway musical Friday night, the cast directed that message at him. “We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir,” Brandon Victor Dixon, who plays Aaron Burr, said on stage after the show. “But we truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us.” Pence was booed when he took his seat at the theater. “There’s nothing to boo here, ladies and gentlemen. There’s nothing to boo here. We’re all here sharing a story of love,” Dixon said when he began to deliver the cast’s message at the end of the show. “Vice President-elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical.” President-elect Donald Trump took issue with the cast’s message, calling it harassment and asking for an apology. “Our wonderful future V.P. Mike Pence was harassed last night at the theater by the cast of Hamilton, cameras blazing. This should not happen!” he tweeted on Saturday. “The Theater must always be a safe and special place. The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!” Since it first debuted on Broadway, political leaders have flocked to see Hamilton. The show became more political during the presidential campaign, hosting a fundraising performance for Hillary Clinton and creating a series of videos encouraging people to vote. Lin-Manuel Miranda—the show’s creator and former star who has spoken out against Trump—said previously that “it would be fun to have Donald Trump see the show,” which tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, an American immigrant and founding father. The musical famously features a diverse cast, with men and women of color portraying people who were white. One line of the show, in particular—”Immigrants: We get the job done”—caused the audience to erupt in applause Friday. She was 60. Jones’ representative, Judy Miller Silverman, said Jones died Friday at a Cooperstown, New York, hospital after battling pancreatic cancer. Loved ones and members of her retro-soul band, the Dap-Kings, were among those surrounding her, Silverman said. The story of Jones’ battle with cancer, first diagnosed in 2013, was told in Barbara Kopple’s documentary, “Miss Sharon Jones!” released earlier this year. Though she triumphantly returned to the stage in 2015 after the cancer went into remission, Jones late last year announced its return. Still, Jones mounted another comeback with the defiant single “I’m Still Here” and hit the road again this summer with the Dap-Kings even while undergoing chemotherapy. “You got to be brave,” a debilitated Jones told the Associated Press in July , in between tour stops. “I want to use the time that I have. I don’t want to spend it all laid up, wishing I had done that gig.” Jones’ death was immediately noted on social media and throughout the music industry. The British producer Mark Ronson, who brought the Dap-Kings in to play backing band to Amy Winehouse on her breakthrough album, “Back to Black,” said, “Sharon Jones had one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent time.” The youngest of six children, Sharon Lafaye Jones was born on May 4, 1956, in Augusta, Georgia. Her family lived in nearby North Augusta, South Carolina, across the Savannah River from the birthplace of James Brown. Jones, who would grow into a dynamic, show-stopping performer, grew up idolizing the Godfather of Soul and would later be frequently tagged as “the female James Brown.” But for decades, such a fate was unimaginable. On “I’m Still Here,” she sings of being turned down by music executives for being “too Website: www.magmafoods.com 43 / 81 short, too fat, too black and too old.” After growing up in Brooklyn (her mother moved to escape an abusive husband), Jones regularly sang gospel at her church, performed for years in a wedding band and sang back-up for various session bands. To make ends meet, she worked as a corrections officer at the Rikers Island jail complex and was a bank security guard. But in one recording session, she caught the attention of Gabriel Roth and Philip Lehman. The two, blown away by Jones’ fiery voice, made her the lead singer of their newly formed Dap-Kings and launched the Bushwick, Brooklyn-based label, Daptone Records, around her unlikely star power. They debuted with 2002’s “Dap-Dippin’ With Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings,” released when Jones was 46. Three more albums followed in the ensuing decade, and two compilations. Standouts included a soulful rendition of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land” and the single “100 Days, 100 Nights,” in which she belts: “100 days, 100 nights to know a man’s heart/ And a little more, before, he knows his own.” The sound, backed by walls of horns and tightly guided by bandleader Roth, was propelled by Jones’ grit and ferocity. For her, soul and survival went hand in hand. Her torrid performances began, like Brown’s, with a prolonged introduction from her bandmates. Jones never disparaged the better-selling British soul revival led by Ronson and Winehouse that coincided with her rise. But she wasn’t shy about claiming to be the more genuine article. “We’ve been there, and we’re still doin’ this,” Jones told New York magazine in 2010. “In another few years, what are they gonna be doin’?” Their sixth album, “Give the People What They Want” earned Jones her first Grammy nomination for best R&B album. Their last album, “It’s a Holiday Soul Party,” was released last year. Kopple witnessed the charismatic Jones light up hospital wards while undergoing chemo. “When people are around or there’s an audience, that gives her fuel and she forgets her pain,” the director said ahead of the release of “Miss Sharon Jones!” Even while suffering the effects of her cancer and its treatments, the workmanlike Jones toured relentlessly “It’s therapy,” Jones said of performing in July. “I know I need rest and sleep. But I want to work and that is our job.” Thousands of Malaysians March Against Government, Defying Threats Nov 19, 2016 06:14AM When they were completed in 1998, the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur were the tallest buildings in the world. At 1,483 feet, they beat out Chicago’s Sears Tower — which had held the record since 1973 — by only 10, but all the same, the superlative was a trophy for a Southeast Asian nation that had transformed itself from a sleepy agrarian society into a crucial economic center in less than a quarter of a century. Specifically, they were a point of pride for Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who had led Malaysia in its rebirth; so personal was the accomplishment that he himself chose the fixtures in the skyscrapers’ bathrooms. On Saturday, Mahathir was one of the many of thousands of people who gathered in the shadow of the towers to demand that Malaysia’s current Prime Minister, Najib Razak, step down from office. “Time has come for us to topple this cruel regime,” Mahathir said, standing on a portable stage before a crowd of roaring supporters dressed in yellow. “Najib is no longer suitable to be the prime minister. He is abusing the law.” Saturday’s protest, organized by a group of pro-democracy and anti-corruption activists collectively known as Bersih (the Malay word for “clean”), was the second massive display of outrage towards Najib since July 2015, when the Wall Street Journal and investigative news website Sarawak Report reported that his personal bank accounts held nearly $700 million in cash apparently siphoned from a state development fund called 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Najib has strenuously denied the allegations. The rally — which attracted around 40,000 people, according to local media reports, though one organizer placed it at twice that — was peaceful, even festive, despite the endemic frustration here. Attendees blew vuvuzelas and shared bottles of water when the equatorial heat proved too oppressive. (Before afternoon thunderstorms accumulated overhead, the thermostat hit close to 90 degrees.) Police blocked access to Merdeka Square, where the march was scheduled to culminate, so organizers deftly regrouped and informed participants over social media that they would instead head to the Petronas Towers. Reports that violent pro-government groups would be there to provoke demonstrators proved false. “We’re not out here to create any sort of problems — we just want to be seen and be heard,” 37-year-old Rizal Ahmad, who says he is currently unemployed, tells TIME. “The situation is getting worse, and people are becoming more desperate. We need to be heard.” Fahmi Reza, a street cartoonist who has previously been arrested for his work, is blunter. “We live in a country that’s full of clowns and crooks stealing money from us,” he says, raising over his head a large cutout of a caricature of Najib. It is hard to discredit their frustration. Najib took power in 2009 promising to bring the country into the 21st century, emphasizing ethnic plurality, economic growth, and good governance. Instead, he has supported not only policies that not only reinforce the country’s ethnic tensions — Malaysia is about 60% ethnic Malay, 25% Chinese, and 10% Indian — but plot the blueprint of a security state. In the year and a half since the 1MDB scandal erupted, he has penalized his detractors, shutting down or prosecuting media outlets that aspire to transparency in their political reporting. His party, the right-wing United Malays National Organization (UMNO), is stronger than ever. “We are looking at a collision between what has been a clubby, insular Malaysian political order and the norms and the expectations of the wider world,” Michael Montesano, a researcher at Singapore’s Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, tells TIME. “The nagging question is whether movements like Bersih point to patterns in social change in Malaysia that will lead to a different outcome.” The prelude to Saturday’s protest was an anxious one. The night Website: www.magmafoods.com 44 / 81 and back as she accompanied the soloists. It all seemed effortless. But the slight child in the red woolen tights and floral print dress was clearly in charge — and enjoying running the show. The energy doesn’t stop flowing off stage. Alma doesn’t even try to sit still, gesturing and fidgeting as she talks about “Cinderella.” She says she’s “extremely excited” at the prospect of the Dec. 29 premiere in the ornate theater of Vienna’s Baumgarten palace. “I can’t wait until everything will come together,” she says. “I dream about how it’s going to look like on the stage.” Zubin Mehta, the patron of “Cinderella,” is only one of today’s conducting greats awed by her talent. Simon Rattle says he is “absolutely bowled over” by her and Daniel Barenboim has used similar terms. Violin virtuoso Anne-Sophie Mutter describes Alma’s performing and composing talents as “absolutely extraordinary.” Her father, Guy Deutscher, remembers her “singing almost before she started speaking” — and one day, coming home from a toddlers’ party singing a nursery rhyme in perfect pitch. Drives to the supermarket turned into tests of will, he said. Alma, normally “an extremely good-natured girl,” started screaming if her parents tried to get out of the car while music she loved was still playing. Deutscher describes parenting Alma as a challenge with huge rewards. “Waking up in the morning and your daughter coming and saying, ‘I have the most amazing melody, please come and listen’ … it’s an amazing feeling.” Alma recalls falling in love with music sometime after age 2. It was a Strauss lullaby, she says, and she was dumbfounded. “After it finished, I asked my parents, ‘how can music be so beautiful?’ Then I started having ideas of my own. I’d just sit down at the piano. I didn’t write my ideas down, I just had them in my head, and I played them. I was 4.” The music comes unbidden, says Alma. “If I try to sit down and think, ‘now I must get inspiration,’ then I just don’t get inspiration, it doesn’t come to me,” she explained. “But when I am not thinking about it at all, when I’m just relaxing, skipping in the garden and just about to fall asleep or just about to wake up — or when I’m actually in a dream — then I get the beautiful inspiration that I put together.” Future plans include a piano concerto and a symphony. She has started a book which she wants made into a film, complete with her own score. Alma says it features ghosts riding “night mares” and poisoning dreams by breathing toxic fumes. At the same time, she says she hasn’t read any of the Harry Potter books because “they’re too scary for me.” For now, the main focus is on “Cinderella,” delightful not only because of lovely melodies that sometimes draw on Mozart and other classical composers but also because of a charming twist to the familiar story. Alma’s heroine is a composer, “a bit like me.” The step-mother is an opera director, the two step-sisters are haughty divas. And the prince is a poet who finds Cinderella through a melody she wrote. “The prince is haunted by it,” Alma exclaimed, eyes shining in excitement. “He finally has the brainwave to search everywhere in the kingdom, and he will sing the beginning of the melody and only the girl who can continue it will be the one that he’s looking for.” She freely acknowledges that she stole the most beautiful aria from someone else but says “Antonin Yellowsink” doesn’t really mind. “He’s my imaginary composer,” Alma says with a giggle. “I often dream about him.” Serena Williams Confirms the Power of a Beyoncé Crowd Is a New Level of Pressure Nov 18, 2016 03:28PM Serena Williams may have won 22 Grand Slams, but nothing compares to the challenge of performing next to Beyoncé. The tennis player, who dances alongside the singer in her visual album Lemonade, joined Bey onstage for the final night of the Formation World Tour. During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres on Ellen, Williams said that the crowd at the show dwarfed the number of people who watch her tennis matches—and the pressure got to her. “I’ve performed tennis-wise in front of thousands of people but not, like, crowds that huge,” she said. “So all I could think was, ‘Serena, don’t miss your note. Don’t miss your note.’ And what did I do? I missed my note! I was like, ‘God dang it!’ But then I was like, ‘OK, this is so fun. I don’t want to leave. I don’t want to leave,’ so I was trying to stay out there extra deep but eventually they told me in my ear, ‘Serena, get off the stage.’” Williams appeared on Ellen to promote the opening of the Compton-based Yetunde Price Resource Center, named after her eldest sister, who was killed by gun violence. The center aims to connect families affected by gun violence with service providers. 7 Harry Potter Callbacks to Look Out For in Fantastic Beasts Nov 18, 2016 03:21PM Warning: This post contains spoilers for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, J. K. Rowling’s latest foray into the wonderful world of witches and wizards, hit theaters Friday. The movie stars Eddie Redmayne as magizoologist Newt Scamander, and serves as a prequel to the original Harry Potter series. Set in 1920s New York City, the events of Fantastic Beasts take place decades before the birth and death of Harry’s parents, Voldermort’s rise to power and Albus Dumbledore’s appointment as Hogwarts’ headmaster. But despite being set nearly 70 years apart — and on opposite sides of the Atlantic — Rowling has, ingenious as ever, managed to link the worlds in a number of imaginative ways. Here are seven callbacks Potter fans should keep an eye out for in Fantastic Beasts: 1. Hedwig’s Theme The first few seconds of the movie are spine-tingling for any Potter lover, thanks to the inclusion of the first few bars of John William’s iconic “Hedwig’s Theme,” which played in every previous Potter film. However, instead of continuing into the composition that is familiar to all Potter fans, the Fantastic Website: www.magmafoods.com 47 / 81 Beasts theme offers a chilling variation on the original. 2. Spell casting Muggles may be called “No-Majs” in Fantastic Beasts, but much of Harry Potter‘s wizarding lingo remains unchanged — or un-Americanized. Spells are a good example of this; a quick (and effective) “Alohomora” is uttered early on in the story. 3. Hogwarts When Newt first arrives in America and flips the “Muggle Worthy” switch on his enchanted case, one of the items the customs official is able to see inside is a yellow and gray striped Hufflepuff scarf. Later in the film, Newt argues with Tina and Queenie over whether Hogwarts or Ilvermorny — the American equivalent — is a better wizarding school. 4. Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald Albus Dumbledore, who would have been a Transfiguration professor in his 40s at the time Fantastic Beasts takes place, is name-checked toward the middle of the movie during a conversation between Scamander and Percival Graves (Colin Farrell), head of MACUSA’s Department of Magical Law Enforcement. During the discussion, it’s revealed that Dumbledore argued against Scamander’s expulsion from Hogwarts, an important reference that could prove significant in subsequent films. Like Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald, the man considered to be one of the most dangerous dark wizards of all time, is a notable presence in Fantastic Beasts. Newspapers hint that he is a wanted man, and one character references “one of Grindelwald’s fanatics.” The dark wizard — whom Rowling revealed during a tour in 2007 that Dumbledore had romantic (but unrequited) feelings for — will likely play a bigger role in the sequel to Fantastic Beasts. 5. The Pensieve The enchanted basin that allows its owner to experience — and store — memories before they are forgotten is first introduced in Dumbledore’s office during The Goblet of Fire and is used by Rowling throughout the Potter series as a flashback narrative device. In Fantastic Beasts, she employs the magical concept in a much more sinister manner. When two characters are sentenced to die by a member of MACUSA, we learn that the American wizarding community’s death penalty involves luring the condemned into a giant Pensieve by broadcasting their happy memories on its surface. 6. Leta Lestrange Thanks to the sadistic Bellatrix — Voldemort’s most devout follower — the name Lestrange has become synonymous with evil in the Potterverse. However, in Fantastic Beasts, it’s revealed that Newt’s best friend during his time at Hogwarts was a girl named Leta Lestrange — played by Zoë Kravitz. It’s currently unclear how Leta will factor into the story going forward, but the manner in which Scamander acts when asked about their relationship suggests they had a falling out — a possible hint that she turned to dark magic. 7. Transportation High up on the list of memorable Harry Potter details is the way in which wizards reach Platform 9 3/4 to get on the Hogwarts Express — by running through a brick wall at King’s Cross Station. Not only is this unusual boarding method alluded to in Fantastic Beasts, but much of the movie’s final battle scene takes place in New York’s City Hall Station; clearly Rowling believes trains equal drama. Donald Trump Is Paying $25 Million to Settle the Trump University Lawsuits Nov 18, 2016 02:32PM Donald Trump has agreed to a $25 million settlement to end high-profile lawsuits against his eponymous and now defunct real estate seminar Trump University, the New York Attorney General said Friday, ending the legal controversy that at times dogged his campaign and threatened to force the President-elect to testify in open court before his inauguration. The settlement will cover three lawsuits related to Trump University: two class action suits in California and a case brought by New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. “Donald Trump fought us every step of the way, filing baseless charges and fruitless appeals and refusing to settle for even modest amounts of compensation for the victims of his phony university,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “Today, that all changes. Today’s $25 million settlement agreement is a stunning reversal by Donald Trump and a major victory for the over 6,000 victims of his fraudulent university.” Each plaintiff will receive restitution and Trump will pay up to $1 million in penalties to New York state, Schneiderman said. Multiple reports ahead of Schneiderman’s announcement indicated that Trump, who had vowed during his campaign that there would be no settlement, would not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the deal. “The victims of Trump University have waited years for today’s result and I am pleased that their patience—and persistence—will be rewarded by this $25 million settlement.” In a statement, the Trump Organization maintained that he would have won in court. “While we have no doubt that Trump University would have prevailed at trial based on the merits of this case,” a spokesperson said, “resolution of these matters allows President-Elect Trump to devote his full attention to the important issues facing our great nation.” Website: www.magmafoods.com 48 / 81 One California class action lawsuit was filed against Trump University in 2010, and Trump’s lawyers raced to reach a settlement this week before a trial was due to start on Nov. 28. It was that lawsuit drew headlines during Trump’s presidential campaign when he accused U.S. District Judge Gonzalo Curiel of being biased against him because of his Mexican heritage. (Trump wrongly called Curiel, an American who was born in Indiana, “Mexican.”) After Trump won the election, Curiel advised both sides to consider a settlement rather than trial, “given all else that’s involved” in light of Trump’s new status as President-elect of the United States. The suit alleged that Trump University defrauded students by presenting itself as an accredited institution and pressured people to spend up to $35,000 for classes taught by instructors advertised as “hand picked” by Trump. “At its core, the accusation is that the name was deceptive on both counts:—that there were no distinctive Trump methods or secrets actually provided. And despite its use of terms like professors, adjunct professors and tuition, it was never a university,” Steven Brill wrote for TIME of the suit in 2015. Trump University operated between 2005 to 2010, during which time about 7,000 consumers paid between $1,495 and $34,995 for courses.
