About The One Club
The One Club is unique among advertising creative organizations. No other group in the world is as dedicated to upholding
and raising creative standards in all genres and all media of advertising, nor can any other group count such worldwide
creative luminaries among its current and former leadership.
In 1977, The One Club for Art & Copy was founded and assumed sole sponsorship of the One Show. The significance of
the show’s name was derived from the team concept of art director and copywriter that was the backbone of the Bill
Bernbach-led creative revolution. Prior to the One Show, awards shows focused on either the visual or copy elements of
a particular ad, but the One Show chose a more holistic approach in declaring the creative concept and its execution to
be the primary criteria for which an ad would be judged. This simple yet novel idea quickly propelled the One Show Pencil
from New York’s best awards show to the nation’s best, and now the world’s most prestigious and coveted advertising
award.
As the One Show’s reputation grew, so did the scope of The One Club. In 1994 an education department was created, and
the annual student exhibition debuted. The student show signified The Club’s emphasis on the future of the industry and
underscored its commitment to education. It was in this same progressive, forward-thinking outlook on the business that
interactive categories were added to the One Show in 1996, just a few short years ago, yet still in the nascent stages of
interactive advertising.
These new categories quickly became an advertising awards show in its own right in 1998, with the introduction of
One Show Interactive. A design competition, One Show Design, was started in 2001 as part of an effort to recognize the
increasingly important role of design in integrated branding campaigns. One Show Design became its own separate show
in 2007 with an awards presentation and exhibit.
2008 One Show Festival Overview
The 2008 One Show Festival was one of the most widely entered award shows by creatives and advertising agencies
around the world. The coveted Pencil award sets the standards in creative excellence and to win it is the pinnacle of any
creative’s career. This year, The One Club will be hosting a five-day festival that kicks off with the student exhibition and
ends with our grand finale, One Show Interactive. For a week in New York, The One Club offers journalists an opportunity
to experience the trends of today, and glimpse the new approaches of tomorrow.
This year, entries were submitted from over 60 countries, making the One Show the largest award show worldwide and
the Pencil the most sought-after creative award.

Pencils and Merit Winners
The One Club believes that creativity springs from the hearts and minds of individuals, not committees. The One Show is
judged by a system of points recorded on anonymous ballots. Discussion is kept to a minimum and no pressuring votes
or lobbying for work is allowed.
Less than 5% of One Show entries win a place in the One Show, One Show Interactive and One Show Design annuals, the
compendiums of record for the year’s best creative advertising.
The Pencil award is the coveted trophy given to the top tier of winners in the One Show. Pencils are awarded to the top
scoring entries in each category and are calculated from the judges’ ballots and the average scores. There are three
levels of Pencils—Gold, Silver, and Bronze—with Gold being the highest, and Silver the next high and Bronze the third
level.
Merit winners are the fourth tier of One Show winners. This is work that scored well, but not well enough to win a Pencil.
However, you’re well served to pay attention to Merit winners—they constitute some of the most interesting and unusual
work in the One Show annuals.
ONE SHOW CATEGORIES
To reflect the advertising’s growing reach into alternative and mainstream media, this past year the One Show added a
category for Branded Content. Branded Content is a merging of entertainment and advertising where the content is used
as a vehicle for a specific product or company.
The One Show awards work in these major categories:
Consumer Newspaper
Consumer Magazine
Small Space Print
Outdoor
Trade
Collateral
Public Service & Political Advertising
Consumer Radio
Consumer Television
Cinema Advertising
Non-Broadcast
Innovation in Advertising and Marketing
Integrated Branding
Branded Content
Message from the chief executive officer
Welcome to everyone who has come to see the best creative work from around the world
showcased in New York. More agencies across the country are supporting The One Club,
its programs and scholarships and they are adding to the longer list of our prestigious
sponsors. The One Show Festival is building a stronger international creative community for
design, advertising and new media, which are all presented here in New York over a week
in May. This year we are able to take advantage of many spectacular venues throughout
the city—The Chelsea Art Museum, Jazz at Lincoln Theater and the Nokia Theatre in Times
Square— establishing New York as the epicenter of innovative communication. And for
the first time, the One Show final judging is being held just days before the actual awards
ceremony, allowing all of our judges to be here for the show, adding prestige and excitement
to the awards night.
One Show Interactive continues to be the leader in recognizing the potential for digital
communication. One Show Design is rapidly becoming the primary showcase for print
design, environmental and package design in the country. And the One Show continues to
collect accolades as the most prestigious awards show in the industry.
If you are collecting a Pencil this week at One Show Design, the One Show or One
Show Interactive —congratulations! I thank everyone here for supporting our efforts to
maintain the high standards of creative excellence—the signature of One Show work.

Message from the one club president
We are living through pivotal times in the advertising industry. This is a period that will mark
the end of an era and the beginning of a new and exciting, yet challenging one.
As advertising practitioners, we are witnessing a change in social behavior where the
consumer is becoming more sophisticated and empowered. Web 2.0, mobile devices and
technology like PVR’s are allowing the consumer to dictate when, where and how they watch
content. Not only are they the new program directors, consumers are also fast becoming
content creators.
At the same time, traditional creatives are re-inventing and re-energizing their careers with
new media. As broadband usage grows, online video is becoming a key factor in advertising,
and it is allowing creatives to exercise their talents in art direction, writing, directing
and storytelling. Traditional creatives are bringing strong conceptual campaigns online,
improving the quality and creativity across the new broader fragmented media landscape.
Over the years we have seen the number of media outlets increase dramatically, and as the
media fragments it is becoming increasingly more difficult to reach consumers. The amount
of time consumers are spending on daily media consumption has not changed but the
number of media outlets that they interact with has increased, diluting the time a consumer
spends on any given media outlet or source.
The challenge we as creatives face is to create exciting branded content, entertainment
and advertising that the consumer will choose to include in their programming and in the
content they consume. As advertisers and clients we will need to “let go” and fathom how to
let the consumer contribute to the brand and interact with it.
One Show, One Show Interactive and One Show Design awards are setting the standard for
creative excellence across all media. Congratulations to the diverse international collection
of winners in both new and traditional media. Your work will inspire and stand as a reference
to how the industry has progressed this past year.

Pencil is the most highly regarded award among advertising industry professionals. If you are in
the advertising business, New York City is the place to be the week of May 5 - 9."
The One Show awards program is part of One Show Festival Week which for the first time will
include One Show Design on May 6th at the Chelsea Art Museum. While design has been a part
of the One Show since 2001, in 2007 a separate design awards ceremony was launched due to the
growing emphasis on good design in the consumer marketplace and the overwhelming increase
in entries in the design categories.
Another highlight for professionals coming to New York for One Show Festival Week will be
the One Show Speaker Series featuring Jerry Della Femina, Kevin Proudfoot, Kerri Martin, and

2008 ONE SHOW INTERACTIVE AWARDS GIVE INDUSTRY RINGSIDE
SEAT FOR MEXICAN WRESTLER-THEMED EXTRAVAGANZA
~ The One Club Goes Loco for Lucha for Most Interactive Awards Show Ever ~
NEW YORK, NY (April 1, 2008)— On May 9, the One Show Interactive awards, the
industry’s most prestigious awards competition, will become more interactive than ever as they
honor the year’s best digital media and web design. In celebration of the fascinating world of
Luchadores, the striking and mysterious masked wrestlers of Mexico, they will install a
regulation-sized wrestling ring right in the middle of New York City’s Nokia Theatre.
“Bloody fights, killer instincts, masochistic contenders dressed in outrageous outfits— isn’t this
a typical day at the office for the industry’s interactive leaders?” laughs Kevin Swanepoel,
President of The One Club. “Seriously, this year’s theme is a literal interpretation of the battles
creatives wage everyday—against themselves, the industry, the zeitgeist, you name it. You can’t
get any more interactive than putting a small agency in the ring with a big industry and letting
them duke it out. We’ve been doing just that with One Show Interactive for eleven years now,
and let me tell you, the results can be very surprising.”
Reflecting the ever-expanding realm of online and interactive work, One Show Interactive
features cutting-edge categories like Microsites, New Media Innovation and Development and a
brand new category making its debut this year, Online Branded Content. Contenders for the
coveted 2008 One Show Interactive awards will be judged in New York from March 24-27 by a
jury hailing from 10 countries and helmed by Will McGinness, Jury Chairman and Executive
Creative Director at Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, San Francisco.
At last year’s One Show Interactive top honors went to R/GA agency for its Branded Application
and website “Nike+” for client Nike. Nike was also named as the 2007 Client of the Year due to
their re-emergence as a leader in creative advertising. This year 3,139 entries from more than 60
countries were submitted.
The blood-slinging begins at www.showdowninteractive.com.

THE ONE CLUB NAMES COMEDIAN TOM PAPA AS HOST
FOR THE 33RD ANNUAL ONE SHOW
~After Party to Feature Live Performance by Critically Acclaimed
Recording Artists Bitter:Sweet~
NEW YORK, NY (April 14, 2008) — The One Club, the world’s
leading authority on excellence in creative advertising, has chosen
veteran comedian Tom Papa to be host of the 33rd Annual One Show
gala awards ceremony taking place on May 7th at New York City’s
famed Jazz at Lincoln Center. Clients such as Coke, Nike, HBO, Sony,
Monster.com and Proctor & Gamble are contenders for the coveted
Gold, Silver and Bronze Pencil award. The gala event will be followed
by an after party featuring critically acclaimed artists Bitter:Sweet.
“Tom delivers his observational jokes about the human condition with enviable ease,”
said Mary Warlick, CEO of The One Club. “At the core of all great advertising is a truth
about the human experience so we know Tom’s brand of comedy will resonate with this
creative audience.”
Papa, discovered by Jerry Seinfeld in a New York City comedy club, is a regular
correspondent for “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and appears frequently on
numerous late-night talk shows. He got his first big break with his own Comedy Central
Presents half-hour special, appeared in the film Analyze That opposite Robert DeNiro and
was a writer on the animated feature, Bee Movie, starring Seinfeld. Recently Papa
partnered with musician Rob Zombie to co-write the upcoming adult animated feature
film The Haunted World of El Super Beasto, which follows the adventures of El Super
Beasto, a washed-up Mexican masked wrestler voiced by Papa.
This year’s One Show contenders include Coke’s It’s Mine, Nike’s Better Than Me,
HBO’s Voyeur, Sony’s Playdoh, Monster.com’s Stork and Proctor & Gamble’s Tide
Talking Stain.
Following the One Show, The One Club will host an after party at the Highline Ballroom
featuring a live performance by Quango recording artists Bitter:Sweet known for their
harmonious blends of smoky jazz-house meshed with a richly textured fusion of bass,
percussion and keys. Bitter:Sweet’s debut album The Mating Game was described by
The Los Angeles Times as “the best album of its kind since Portishead’s Dummy was
released more than a decade ago.” The group is now poised to release their sophomore
album, Drama, in May of 2008.
“In addition to their wonderfully melodic songs, Bitter:Sweet is a perfect choice for the
One Show due to the prominence their music enjoys in the advertising community,” said
Kevin Swanepoel, President of The One Club. “Their song “The Mating Game” has been
featured in Korbel commercials for two years while “Dirty Laundry” can be heard in
commercials for Victoria’s Secret and promo ads for ABC’s popular comedy “Samantha
Who?”. “The Bomb,” the first single off Drama is already garnering national attention as
the theme song for NBC’s popular television comedy, “Lipstick Jungle.”
The One Show is one of three annual awards programs that make up the One Show
Festival Week to be held May 5-9, 2008. The festival also includes One Show Design
and One Show Interactive. This year, the One Show has attracted 24,081 entries from
more than 60 countries around the world.

2008 One Show Awards the
Best Ads From Around the World
Microsoft XBOX Halo 3 Named “Best of Show”
~~
Burger King Named “Client of the Year”
The One Club Salutes Advertising’s Best Print, Television, Radio &
Integrated Branding Campaigns
NEW YORK, NY (May 7, 2008) — The One Show announced the winners of the Gold,
Silver and Bronze Pencils at Jazz at Lincoln Center in the Time Warner Center this
evening. Veteran comedian Tom Papa hosted the night, treating the audience to a
rousing stand-up show complete with comedic bits and one-liners as the winners were
announced. More than 600 advertising professionals gathered to celebrate the 33rd
Annual One Show—the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars.
Top honors for “Best of Show” went to McCann Worldgroup SF & T.A.G. for their
integrated branding campaign created to launch Microsoft’s XBOX Halo 3 video game.
The campaign centered on a real world diorama built to commemorate the fictional
battle between mankind and its alien enemy and painted a picture of the ultimate
hero—Master Chief. Through TV spots of accounts from battle veterans, online
interactive flyovers of the entire monument and outdoor ads designed to look like
commemorative murals and plaques—the audience started to see Halo 3 as a story with
real emotion and Master Chief as a hero who personified courage duty and sacrifice.
“The ‘Believe’ campaign catapulted Halo 3 from an ordinary video game into a
worldwide cultural phenomenon due to its ability to build an emotional rapport with the
audience,” said Mary Warlick, CEO of The One Club. “The innovative stream of
interactive TV, Web and cinema advertisements was an inspired approach that
successfully attracted an audience beyond the typical gamer.”
Burger King was named 2008 Client of the Year. Burger King enhanced its brand with
some of the most effective creative and collaborative advertisements, including two
exemplary campaigns by Crispin Porter + Bogusky; “WhopperFreakout” and “Simpsons
Integrated.” “WhopperFreakout” was a social experiment designed to prove that people
really loved the signature Whopper by discontinuing it for one day in one town and
creating a fully integrated campaign from the resulting documentary-style footage.
“Simpsons Integrated” paired America’s favorite glutton, Homer Simpson, with Burger
King—creating spots that featured Homer’s love of Burger King and an interactive Web
site replete with the ability for fans to turn their own photos into ‘Simpsonized’ versions
of themselves.
