friction material 3
Extend braking life and cut downtime with
cat extended life friction material
D
id you know that Caterpillar now offers a friction material that at
least doubles and can extend brake life by up to four times? The
new material increases heat resistance in wet brake systems and
results in less downtime.
Caterpillar Extended Life Friction Material uses an innovative carbon paper,
providing a significant step forward in braking performance, especially in heavyload applications. The new carbon friction material is designed to provide two to
four times more wear life than standard paper friction material, resulting in lower
cost per hour.
If your application requires mid-life brake overhauls, you may be able to eliminate
this interruption to your production in the future by installing the new friction
material.
The Extended Life Friction Material is currently available for off-highway trucks
from 769 to 797 models, either as an option on new machines or as a service
replacement. It can also be specified as a service replacement for 980G-H, 988B-H,
990I-II and 992C-G wheel loaders and for 824G-H, 834B-H, 844 and 854G wheel
dozers.

4 HYDRAULICS
Eight good reasons to use Cat hydraulic hose
and couplings
1
2
3
Caterpillar is the only equipment
manufacturer to make its own hose
and couplings – and has been since the
1960s.
High quality materials, exacting
processes and tough testing mean that
Cat hose products exceed industry
standards.
Cat hose is aged in extreme operating
conditions – filled with oil, baked
and frozen. Other manufacturers
test unaged hose. Then it is impulse
tested up to 2.5 times Society of
Automotive Engineers standards to give
you more reliable, durable hose.
4
Cat hose also undergoes pressure,
strength, flexibility, bend radius and
abrasion resistance tests and is up to
20 times more abrasion resistant
than competitive brands.
Colour-embossed layline
• Makes it easy to install the right
replacement hose
• Features key information – like bulk
hose part number and inner diameter
• Stays readable long after use – even if
the cover has been painted
5
Cat reusable couplings for XT Hose
are the last couplings you’ll ever
need. A unique design lets you reuse
couplings even after the hose is
worn out, saving money time and
again.
6
Cat reusable couplings for XT Hose are
guaranteed against failure – unless
it is caused by abuse, neglect or fire,
improper use, installation or repair.
7
8
Caterpillar’s on-line information system
ensures fast and accurate answers to
all your hose and coupling questions.
Comprehensive support from
Barloworld Equipment includes fast,
accurate assembly, contamination
control, over the counter and on-site
service and application advice. So you
get the best performance and the
best value.
Superior quality hose assembly
• Sleeve-coupling combination provides
consistent grip, use after use
• Precision machined lands seal oil out
from gripping surfaces
Extremely tough outer cover
• Resists oil, weather, abrasion,
and wear
Exclusive reusable coupling design
• Lets you reuse couplings, reducing
downtime
• Saves you an average of 33% off the
cost of assemblies with permanent
couplings
Premium quality rubber
• Features unique compounds that offer better physical
properties and more resistance to heat aging
• Provides more strength and durability – Caterpillar
embeds fabric between two thin layers of rubber;
other manufacturers apply fabric to the outside, where
it’s more likely to separate and cause failure
Precision wire reinforcement
• Enhances hose durability
• Helps ensure consistent quality
• Keeps wires from separating when flexed, leading
to extended life

SUPPORTing you 5
Achieving profitability with your earthmoving
equipment
What drives your decision to buy a certain brand of earthmoving machine?
The choice does not come down to the make or even the quality of the machine,
but rather how profitable the machine will be for you. Your profitability is
impacted by seven major factors that need to be considered when making an
investment decision.
The chart below shows the relative impact of these factors.

Resale
Value
Interest
Rate
Purchase
Price
Productivity, availability, operating cost and utilisation show a significantly greater
impact on your bottom line. This is because these factors affect your profit every
day that you own your machine.
Resale value, interest rate and purchase price have a less significant effect since
they only have a one-time impact.
How can we help to ensure the profitability of your Cat
machines/fleet?
Members of the Barloworld Equipment Product Group (front from left): group
manager Angus Graham; Adri van Rooyen, NPI co-ordinator for Southern Africa
(a critical role as new machines are only introduced once parts are in stock and
service technicians have been trained); Johan Hartman, product manager for
road building equipment, motor graders and waste products; and Bruce Curtis,
product manager for articulated trucks and dozers; (back from left): Mark
Senyard, product manager, loaders; Neal Markham, product manager, under
20-ton machines (backhoe loaders, skid steer loaders, compact wheel loaders,
telehandlers, mini excavators and work tools); Craig Christie, specialist product
support rep in global paving and waste handling equipment; and Fifi Venter,
product manager, hydraulic excavators.
Barloworld Equipment effectively takes care of the A to Z of machine and parts/
components selection and application through two linked customer support
teams – the Product Group and the Product Support Group. The specialists
assembled in these teams bring many years of combined expertise to the table to
optimise your profitability.
Product Group
The Product Group, headed by Angus Graham, aims specifically to improve the
productivity, availability, operating cost and utilisation of your Cat machine or
fleet – the factors that influence your bottom line most dramatically. You can
talk to us about the right machine or combination of machines for the job at
hand and the Product Group will provide practical advice based on case studies
undertaken across all our markets in a wide range of different site conditions.
Going a step further, we can help you to achieve correct equipment usage
through a combination of correct site layout, application of the right machines to
the right jobs, and correct operating procedures.
The value added by this team can include anything from advising on how haul
road gradients affect production to bucket design and size, cycle times and
tyre choice, to bringing in international Caterpillar experts to help you perfect
operating techniques.
Product Support Group
The Product Support Group, headed by general manager Kish Mesthrie, seeks to
develop innovative and effective equipment management solutions for Caterpillar
customers. The group product specialists provide wide ranging support on
engines, hydraulics, undercarriage, ground engaging tools, fluids and filters
and other Caterpillar parts and consumables that have a direct bearing on the
reliability, longevity and profitability of your Cat machine.
Barloworld Equipment has always taken great pride in the fact that its levels of
product support set the industry standard. As a supplier of premium product and
support, we are always aware of the competitive environment with in which we
work and the need to continually strive for customer satisfaction.
Group product specialists (from left): Wally Parsons: engines and power train; Paul
Verwey: hydraulics; Jeff Dorrington: undercarriage and ground engaging tools;

Give your excavator wings
B
arloworld Equipment is extending its range of Cat attachments to
boost the versatility its mid-size and large Cat hydraulic excavators.
Cat also unveiled its latest hydraulic quick coupler at Bauma 2007, enabling the
operator to change tools in a matter of seconds without even having to leave the cab.
Potential excavator attachments include buckets, grabs, hammers, rippers, sorting
grapples, shears, vibratory compactors, and multi-processors with interchangeable
jaws (concrete cutter, crusher, primary and secondary pulverisers, shear and tank
shear jaws).
Excavators up to the large Cat 385C will be catered for with this range.
Various buckets are available to provide a balance between performance and
durability, depending on the application. Excavation buckets (X) can dig and load
soft to medium materials such as clay and earth, while extreme excavation (EX)
buckets dig and load compact or abrasive materials such as earth/rock, sand/clay,
sand/gravel, coal, chalk and low-abrasion ores. Buckets for special applications
include ditch cleaning buckets (tiltable), skeleton buckets (heavy duty) and
trapezoidal buckets.
So-called orange grapples are also very popular in South Africa as excavator
attachments in the scrap handling and recycling industries. Cat multi-processors do
the work of many types of demolition tools by means of their interchangeable jaw
sets that allow a single unit to crush, pulverise and cut.

ACERT 7
Acert technology drives the future of
diesel engines
C
aterpillar has set the benchmark with its diesel engines using ACERT
technology. Available on all the latest model Cat machines from
Barloworld Equipment, ACERT technology not only meets US and
European emissions regulations, but also offers improved fuel efficiency.
“Fuel consumption is one of the most critical factors of machine use, particularly
with rising fuel prices,” says Wally Parsons, Barloworld Equipment group product
specialist for engines and power train. “Users of Cat engines with ACERT
technology have reported reduced fuel consumption.”
Fuel efficiency in Cat engines with ACERT technology is achieved through the use
of an ADEM controller, an electronic system that controls engine fuel burn, as
well as measuring and maintaining cylinder temperature at specific levels.
“These engines are also more cost-effective to rebuild than previous generation
Cat engines as they are more compact. An example is the Cat 777F off-highway
truck, where the ACERT technology makes the engine 15% cheaper to rebuild
than a conventional engine,” Wally points out.
“Emissions regulations are currently being reviewed by the South African
authorities, and it is anticipated that either the US or European regulations will
be adopted locally. ACERT technology meets both US and European emissions
regulations. However, it is significant to note that these dual standards will fall in
line with each other in 2008.”
ACERT technology delivers dependable engines with reliability, low operating
costs and long life. It also means that a customer’s engines and machines meet
regulatory standards without trouble-prone complexity. In addition, the customer
only has to adopt a single emissions reduction technology that will not become
obsolete in the near future.

8 PROCESSING SOLUTIONS
Cat + Metso = earthmoving + processing
solutions
B
arloworld Equipment’s business is all about providing customers with
efficient earthmoving and process solutions that increase production and reduce cost per ton. To this end we pursue a strategy of
representing additional products that complement our Caterpillar offering
where a need exists in our markets.
It was this strategy that enabled us to partner with Benicon Opencast Mining last
year when a solution was needed to increase coal production and supply to New
Vaal Power Station. Benicon was contracted to mine 3-million tons of coal at Anglo
Coal’s MacWest mini pit project at New Vaal Colliery in a 17 month period.
Stationery crushing and screening plants used elsewhere on the mine
were unsuitable for this fast track project because of the relatively lengthy
commissioning period. Following trials, Benicon selected a package of products
from Barloworld Equipment including six Cat 966 and 938 wheel loaders, two
Metso LT 1213 impact crushing units and a Metso ST 358 screening plant.
This self contained fleet enables Benicon to extract coal and reduce it from
-700mm to the -50mm required for the power station furnaces. Each of the Metso
LT 1213 crushers has a capacity of 300/350tph and the screener produces 200tph.
These units are fed by the Cat loaders, which also transport the crushed material to
stockpile for the power station furnace.
Fines generated are also consumed by the power station.
Metso mobile crushing and screening plants were added to the Barloworld
Equipment product offering some two years ago to provide precisely the kind
of flexible and mobile processing capability required on modern sites. Our Cat
customers now have access to complete earthmoving and processing solutions
from a single source across construction, road building and mining applications of
all sizes.
