Les Jeudis du Jazz
Les Jeudis du Jazz, one of our newest offerings
celebrates a cultural exchange between America and
France that dates back to the 1920s – jazz. The ‘city of
light’ lured American jazz greats like Dexter Gordon,
Bud Powell, Josephine Baker, and Louis Mitchell with
the promise of personal and artistic freedom.

As a tribute to this cross-cultural love of jazz, we’ve
invited some of the finest local and international jazz
artists to transform our Chicago Avenue building into
a jazz club hot! Pour a glass of wine and find a place
to lounge. Jazz has a new home in Chicago.
The Denis Colin Trio has been described as one of the
most poetical of contemporary jazz bands, whose
sound cannot be forced into any category. Colin’s
recording, Etude de Terrain was chosen by critics
as Jazz Record of the Year in 2000 (a panel from Le
Monde, Jazz Magazine, and Inrockuptibles).
Les Jeudis du Jazz
Our series premieres with local favorite Claudia
Hommel presenting a completely new work: The
Jazz Fauré Project — a classical rendez-vous. Classic
Fauré pieces that date back to 1862 have been
reinterpreted for a new audience. Critically acclaimed
singer, Paris-born Claudia Hommel joins forces with
the extraordinary jazz pianist and composer, Dennis
Luxion (Chet Baker’s European pianist) and Jim Cox
on bass for an evening of truly original sounds. Get
ready to swing!

Denis, playing bass clarinet is joined by Didier Petit,
one of the finest cellists in the jazz world, and Pablo
Cueco, a great master of the zarb which is a beautifully
melodic percussion instrument. They’ve been refining
their sound for over fourteen years. The exchange
between musicians and audience is so real the entire
room becomes part of the performance. Come and
experience what happens when backgrounds in free,
progressive, and experimental jazz fuse together as
one amazingly solid sound.

Alliance Française, 54 West Chicago Avenue, officially start in
September. Screenings will be free to IFP and Alliance Française

Réalisateur, Agnès Jaoui, 110 min.
Wednesday, September 28, 7 :15 P.M.
Doors open at 7:00 P.M.
Julius Lewis Auditorium, enter 54 West Chicago Ave.
Both a cooking class and a wine tasting! We will prepare a
menu that flatters Bordeaux wines, then taste two wines with
each course and compare our impressions. Our goal: show that
moderately priced Bordeaux wines properly matched with food
soar in value. Recipes include a wild mushroom ragout. Broiled
lamb chops with potato galette, a selection of cheeses, Crème
catalane and cannellé.
Comme une image (Like an image) is a comic look at Parisian
intellectuals connected through a complicated chain of
blended family, hangers-on, co-dependents and self-absorbed
sycophants. This film humorously and ironically points out our
human tendency to judge others by appearance, physical or
otherwise.

The methods of creating artisanal liqueurs are not secrets
guarded by monks and professional cooks. We can make them
in a morning! They will be ready for Christmas consumption.
These pantry staples (vin de pamplemousse, Prunes à l’Armagnac
and liqueur de citron vert) poured into festive bottles make the
perfect holiday gift for anyone on your list who has everything
(including you).
Holiday baking: Madeleines and financiers
Saturday, November 12 · 060C
These succulent cookie favorites are an especially welcome
French touch to any Christmas assortment. We will explore the
historic difference between these classic biscuit batters and
bake them together so you are assured of success at home.
Recipes include chocolate, vanilla and pistachio madeleines;
almond financier. “Madeleines by Madeleine”!
SEPTEMBRE – OCTOBRE 2005
Zéro de Conduite
Zero for Conduct, is based on Jean Vigo’s personal childhood
experiences. The story which centers on a school revolt by a
group of boys returning to boarding school after vacation,
illustrates the polarizing forces of freedom and authority.
The narrative is loosely knit together with memorable shots
and sequences.
Boudu Sauvé des Eaux
Réalisateur, Jean Renoir, 1932, 87 min.
Wednesday, October 26, 7:15 P.M.
Doors open at 7:00 P.M.

Boudu, an anarchic tramp, is saved from a watery suicide by the
well-intentioned but irredeemably bourgeois bookseller Lestingois,
and repays his favor by becoming the most morally, socially, sexually
and philosophically disruptive house-guest of all time.
