Welcome to New Braunfels
Welcome, Willkommen, Howdy!
ump in to the heart of the Texas Hill Country and you’ll find New
Braunfels. Founded in 1845 by German settlers, our town is overflowing
with old-world heritage. Whether you’re greeted with “willkommen” or
“howdy,” you’re always welcome in New Braunfels.
Stroll in to our city with a walking tour. The exercise will do you good, plus
you’ll visit homes built of the old German fachwerk (half timber, half
masonry) construction. Take in our great museums, historic districts and
performing arts.

Fun, Fun & More Fun!
Dive in to New Braunfels. There might be other places that have as many
uses for water as New Braunfels does, but we don’t know any. Two
clear, clean rivers wind through town — the Comal and the
Guadalupe — and Canyon Lake is just minutes away. Slip
into your bathing suit and go fishing, rafting, kayaking,
tubing, or swimming. Swim into Schlitterbahn Waterpark
Resort, rated America’s best water park, featuring 65
acres of water slides, tube chutes, three uphill water
coasters, a wave pool, children’s play areas, resort rooms,
and lots of other ways to keep cool.
If you love the outdoors, you’ll love New Braunfels.
There are plenty of attractions to enjoy outside. Drop in to
nearby Natural Bridge Caverns, the largest cavern in Texas,
and Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch, a 400-acre park with native
Texas wildlife and exotic species. Tour lovely Landa Park on a
miniature train. View the Comal Springs from a paddle-boat. Relax in our
National Register Historic District of Gruene. Enjoy music, dancing and dining
under the stars. Dine at one of our scrumptious restaurants or bakeries!

To fully enjoy New Braunfels, you need to spend a few days. Fortunately, there
are plenty of accomodations to choose from.
We offer places to stay as unique as our city. No matter what your tastes are, we
have the right lodging for you. For something with character, enjoy a bed-andbreakfast or rustic river cottage. Peek into the past at a historic hotel for a bit of
nostalgic luxury. Great deals can always be found at our hotels and motels. Or try
our condominiums, tennis ranch/resorts, or RV camp facilities. Jump in. Dine in.
Sleep in. Whatever you choose to do in New Braunfels, be prepared for fun
memories to be made!
Most visitors come to New Braunfels packing a
swimsuit, a rod and reel, or a snorkel and fins.
But New Braunfels isn’t just a water paradise.
Once on shore, you’ll find a whole range of
family-friendly activities and attractions in town.
Throughout the year, visitors can also tee off at
the area’s premiere golf courses or jump into
unique adventures, the best in Texas country
music, and traditional German heritage.

Lots to See and Jump Into
Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch — Try an African
Guadalupe River — When Texans think tubing, they
think of the cool, tree-lined, tranquil stretches of this river.
Best known for attracting generations of “tubers” to a
refreshing float to beat the summer heat, the Guadalupe also
lures canoe and kayak enthusiasts to peaceful paddling and
exciting white water rapids. Nature lovers and outdoor
enthusiasts flock to camps and resorts along the tree-lined
banks of the river.
Comal River — The Comal enjoys a unique claim to fame:
It is the shortest river in the United States. The 2.5-milelong Comal starts at one of the largest natural springs in
Texas in Landa Park, the 196-acre jewel of the city’s parks
system, and winds through Schlitterbahn Water Park before
joining the Guadalupe. Its broad, slow flow makes it ideal
for families looking for a quiet tubing experience, and the
clear spring waters make it a popular destination for
snorkeling and diving.
Canyon Lake — Surrounded by quaint communities and
spectacular views of the Texas Hill Country, Canyon Lake
features 80 miles of coastline for campers, vacationers and
day trip sightseers seeking an idyllic retreat. If you like your
water activities quiet and reflective, the lake offers sailing
and fishing, but if you want a more exciting experience, the
lake is a magnet for water skiers and parasailers.
Schlitterbahn — Travel Channel calls Schlitterbahn
America’s number one waterpark for good reason. The park’s
high-tech attractions and natural Comal River setting have
made it the most popular summertime waterpark in the
country. Schlitterbahn, which loosely translates from
German into “slippery road”, has more than 40 family
attractions, ranging from seven different children’s water
playgrounds to the legendary Master Blaster uphill water
coaster to the Boogie Bahn, an inland surfing super wave for
surfers and body boarders.
Texas Ski Ranch — With an eye toward hosting extreme
sports competitions, this new water recreation complex
features indoor water skiing, wake boarding, and
skateboarding facilities. Professional instructors offer teens
camps in all three sports, allowing budding extreme sports
athletes the chance to learn a variety of tricks and
techniques.
Natural Bridge Caverns — Visitors to the state’s biggest
and best show cave can expect an other-worldly experience
in the series of limestone formations and enjoy a year-round
temperature of 70 degrees. In addition to walking tours of
the caves, the Adventure Cave Tour offers a more daring
spelunker exploration of undeveloped portions of the
caverns. The newer Mining Sluice offers kids a chance to
pan for semi-precious stones they get to keep.
safari experience Texas-style with over 50 different species
from antelope to zebras. The ranch has animals from every
continent but Antarctica, including some endangered
species. In addition to the main safari route, which lets
you see exotic animals up close from your car windows,
the ranch also offers a walking safari route and a kid-friendly
petting zoo.
Jump into the oldest
dance hall in Texas
Gruene — This restored village plays host to a number of
artists, artisans and potters. Its pedestrian-friendly shopping
district is a favorite weekend destination for both tourists
and locals. Gruene Hall, one of the oldest and best-known
dance halls in Texas, features singer/songwriters like Willie
Nelson, Robert Earl Keen, and Pat Green, as well as a mix
of touring acts and local and regional up-and-comers.
Texas Music — Dance halls like Saengerhalle, Tavern in
the Gruene, Anhalt, Watering Hole Saloon, River Road Ice
House as well as a variety of honky-tonks also feature
traditional country and the unique blend of folk, country,
bluegrass and roots music that today’s music fans label
“Americana.” KNBT Radio New Braunfels, named the top
Americana station in the nation, airs Texas music
throughout the region as well as worldwide via the Internet.
Jump into a little bit of
Germany in Texas
Downtown New Braunfels — Walk through
downtown New Braunfels, and you’ll see more than 100
years of the German influence that contributes to the city’s
unique place in Texas history. Murals illustrate the town’s
history, paying tribute to New Braunfels’ founder Prince
Solms and favorite native son Ferdinand Lindheimer, the
father of Texas botany. Visitors looking to connect to the
more recent past can enjoy the Faust Hotel; a downtown
landmark dubbed the “Honeymoon Hotel” by GIs and
their new brides during World War II. The founder’s gentle
ghost still roams the Faust today. The historic and
spectacular courthouse building dates back to 1893 and the
Henne Hardware Store is still in operation after over a
century of business. Another downtown architectural classic
is the Brauntex Movie Theater, recently restored to host
live entertainment, and part of the Norman Rockwell
ambiance downtown.
Museums — History buffs have several intriguing museums
to visit. The New Braunfels Conservation Society has
restored and furnished nine buildings (circa 1849 – 1870) to
form a German Village called Conservation Plaza. The
Museum of Texas Handmade Furniture, preserves the
work of the early German craftsmen and artisans at the core
of New Braunfels early business economy. The
Sophienburg Archives and the Sophienburg Museum in
downtown New Braunfels also preserve the history of Texas’
German settlers, with the Archives serving as an invaluable
resource for genealogists searching for German roots in
Texas. The McKenna Children’s Museum will delight the
wee ones with hands-on adventure.
Wurstfest — New Braunfels’ best-known annual event! It’s
a ten-day salute to sausage, starting on the Friday before the
first Monday in November. Sample tasty sausage, strudel,
pretzels, potato pancakes and other German/Texas treats
served up by fun-loving folks. Polka and waltz to good ol’
fashioned oompah music. Visit with friendly Texans dressed
in lederhosen and dirndls in tribute to the community’s rich
German heritage. Come, ’hab spass!
Shopping — The legacy of the German craftsmen and
shopkeepers who founded New Braunfels lives on in the
diverse, eclectic shops found in Historic Downtown New
Braunfels, the Gruene Historic District and the huge outlet
malls along Interstate-35.
We offer antique shops, boutiques showcasing Texas
craftsmen, unique establishments with old-time candy and a
real old-fashion ice cream counter. Henne Hardware is the
oldest hardware store in Texas. There are upscale boutiques
like the Collection — classic ladies apparel and accessories;
and the Gaudy Chic with its shabby chic decor and apparel,
vintage finds and reclaimed fashions. Stop in the Bisque
Bistro where you can paint your own pottery for firing, or
linger in the GrassMarket’s unique shops. Enjoy Thursday’s
“champagne shopping” downtown when the art galleries and
antique stores stay open late. Top off the evening wining and
dining in New Braunfels’ best restaurants.
The IH-35 area outlet malls include Sony, Saks 5th
Avenue, Waterford/Wedgewood, Nike and Seiko outlets, and
more. West Point Stevens for premiere bed and bath linens,
and Rustic Ranch Furnishings for the Texas/Southwest
furniture and decorative touches of the West, plus more
than 100 others round out your shopping smorgasbord.
