When you choose to stay here, Dennis is known for having the best beaches on Cape Cod.
We’re also famous for some of the best seafood restaurants around with family recipes that
go back generations.
Dennis is the cultural center of the Cape, with the eclectic Cape Cod Museum of Art, the
historic Cape Playhouse, and the eccentric Cape Cinema all within the same complex and
many arts and crafts galleries nearby.
Dennis has two challenging 18 hole golf courses and is a short drive to a dozen others and
we have fun miniature golf courses for the whole family. You can charter a fishing boat from
Sesuit Harbor or Bass River, climb Scargo Tower for breathtaking views of Cape Cod bay, rent
a kayak and drift along Swan River, or bring your bike for a scenic ride along the Cape Cod
Rail Trail.
Dennis was named an All American Town not too long ago and retains a hometown
atmosphere, rich in history, tradition and good old fashioned hospitality. This year marks the
Dennis Chamber’s 52nd Anniversary. Help us celebrate.

Dennis Oysters voted #1 on Cape Cod!
Something may be fishy with blind taste tests on TV,
but the one at The 2007 CLASH Cape Cod Oyster
Festival in Hyannis was conducted by the book.
East Dennis Farm Oysters came out on top inching
out oysters form Wellfleet, Orleans, Brewster and
Chatham as the tastiest pearl-bearing bivalve on
Cape Cod. Try some while you’re here!

Getting to Dennis is easy!
The main highway routes are Route 3 South,
or from Route 495 or 195 to Route 25 South,
to Route 6 East (the Mid-Cape Highway) to
Route 134 (exits 9A & 9B). Route 134 North
(exit 9B) will lead you to Dennis and East
Dennis. South on Route 134 (exit 9A) takes you
to West Dennis, South Dennis and Dennisport.

parking passes may be purchased at any
beach location for $15.00 weekdays and
$20.00 weekends and are good for the
entire day at all public beaches throughout
the town. Weekly and seasonal passes for

seven days a week (in season) at the Town
Hall, 485 Main Street, S. Dennis. Call the

Calling all water babies! The Town of Dennis boasts rivers and creeks that
criss-cross the town from Bass River and Chase Garden Creek on the west, to
Quivet Creek and Swan Pond on the east. Water dominates Dennis, dubbed
the “heart of Cape Cod” for its location, spirit, beauty… and yes, its H2O.
Dennis is framed by six town beaches on
Nantucket Sound and ten on Cape Cod Bay,
and sprinkled with glistening fresh water ponds
in between. The town also offers some of the
finest recreational fishing in the region for bass,
blues, pollack, mackerel and flounder. Fishing
charters run out of graceful Sesuit Harbor off
Route 6A on the bay, and at the mouth of
meandering Bass River in West Dennis off Route
28, as the river pours out into Nantucket Sound.
Convenient boat ramps are located all up and

down Route 6A and Route 28, with access
to the bay, sound and inland ponds, some of
which offer both trout and small bass fishing.
Boat ramps include: a ramp off Route 28 in West
Dennis, opposite Ferry Street; one at the end of
Cove Road in South Dennis; Uncle Freeman’s
Road in West Dennis; Sesuit Harbor in East
Dennis; Cove Road in West Dennis; Follins Pond
in South Dennis; Fisherman’s Landing off Route
6A; and Scargo Lake off Route 6A.

Scargo Tower, above right,
began as a tourist observatory
in 1874. Made of wood it
was destroyed by fire then
rebuilt again of wood – and
burned again. Finally built of
cobblestone it is 30 feet high
and located atop the highest
hill in the mid-Cape. It boasts
views from Plymouth to
Provincetown.

Brewster. Just up the road along
Route 6A, heading toward
Brewster, visit the Village of East
Dennis with its striking vistas of
Sesuit Harbor and Sesuit Marsh,
the stately East Dennis Church,
and the site of the old Shiverick
Shipyard—the only Cape
shipyard where large vessels
were built.
In all, there are five villages in
the Town of Dennis, each with
a distinct personality: Dennis
along Route 6A near Beach
Street; historic East Dennis
also on Route 6A near the
Brewster line; South Dennis,
off Route 134, which runs
between Routes 6A and 28;
Dennisport, along Route 28
near the Harwich line; and West
Dennis, along Route 28 near
the Yarmouth line.
Named after the Reverend
Josiah Dennis, who pastored
Yarmouth’s East Parish and
whose vicarage is north of the
village proper along Route
6A and open at times to the
public, the Town of Dennis
severed its ties with neighbor
Yarmouth and incorporated
in 1793. For 154 years, Dennis
was a parish of Yarmouth,
a bragging right Yarmouth
old-timers never hesitate to
extend, but this heart of Cape
Cod came into its own in the
mid 1970s with the honor of
an All-American Cities Award
for its impressive conservation
commitment and open-door
town government style.
And when it comes to arts
and entertainment, Dennis
is second to none on the
Cape, with its venerable Cape
Playhouse, Cape Cod Museum
of Fine Arts and the Cape Cod
Cinema, located on the same
princely compound off Route
6A. The Cape Playhouse, the
oldest summer theater in
America, first opened in 1927
with a remarkable performance
by Basil Raithbone. Dubbed
“cradle of the stars,” the
Playhouse over the years has
attracted top Hollywood and
Broadway talent such as: Ethel
Barrymore, Tallulah Bankhead,
Julie Harris, Gregory Peck,
Humphrey Bogart, Betty Davis,
Art Carney, Shirley Booth, Jane

publications. He has lived on the Cape for more
than 25 years.
Considered by many to have some of the best
beaches on Cape Cod, Dennis boasts 16 beaches on
the ocean and two on fresh water ponds! One-time,
weekly, or seasonal beach parking passes can be
purchased at the Dennis Town Hall. Refer to map on
pages 32 and 33 for locations.

around meadows, bogs and ponds all the way
to the South Wellfleet General Store. For shorter
trips, try the Dennis Bike Path, with access off
Old Bass River Road near the Water District
Building in South Dennis; the four-mile round
trip trail is also good for jogging. (See map on
pages 32 & 33)
Without a doubt, the Town of Dennis –
from its beaches to its hiking and biking trails,
from its many restaurants and shops to its
remarkable galleries and museums, from its
historic buildings and sea captains homes to its
bucolic vistas and resting spots – is a seasoned
adventure by the sea, and a town for all seasons.

The adjacent Cape Cinema features artistic
films not shown in more mainstream theaters,
and the nearby Cape Cod Museum of Fine Arts
showcases the works of talented Cape artists,
contemporary works and special programs. The
New York Times has called it one of the finest
local galleries in New England.
All along Route 6A and just off the road,
you’ll find exceptional restaurants and shops,
and some of the best antiquing the Cape has
to offer.
While many people come to the Cape for the
excitement and crowds, others seek seclusion
and beauty. Dennis offers both, and is blessed
with some of the region’s most secluded hiking
and biking areas. (See pages 56 & 57 for a
complete list.) In many ways, the best way to
see Dennis and surrounding areas is on a bike.

INDIAN LANDS & CONSERVATION TRAIL
Location: At the northern end of Town Hall
parking space, through the gate and take
the right-of-way path for 1500 feet or a 6 to
10 minute walk. There is a large map sign on
the left. Here the trail begins. Come back the
same way.
Approximate length: 3/4 mile plus round trip
on right-of-way (30 minutes).
Facilities: One bench.
FRESH POND CONSERVATION AREA
Location: The area consists of 27 acres
acquired under the self-help program in
1968. It is 6/10 of a mile from the light at
Upper County Rd. in Dennisport on Rte. 134
going south. Sign is green with white letters.
There are five trails: Trails I and 2 are below
the parking space; Trail 3 is north from the
parking space; Trail 4 should be considered
abandoned – its signpost is in bad repair and
and is a circular route. Facilities: Good,
sandy parking, basketball court, ball field,
playground, and handball court pavilion.
Facilities: Public bathrooms and Braille Trail
for the sight impaired.

of fallen trees and broken
bridges. Trail 5 (1/10 mile
south) is beautiful woodlands;
however, one should be
aware of private property, wet
ground and broken bridges.
Approximate length: Trail I is
20-30 minutes; Trail 2 is one

NATURE TRAIL
Location: End of Forest Pines
Dr. off Rte. 134 in E. Dennis. It is
a circular trail.
Approximate length: 3/4 mile.
Facilities: None.
CAPE COD RAIL TRAIL
Location: On Rte. 134 across from Hall Oil
Company in S. Dennis; on the RR right-of-way.
Approximate length: It goes to Eastham,
approximately 20 miles. It is marked by a
brown and gold sign on Rte. 134.
Facilities: None. Ample parking.
CROW’S PASTURE
Location: At the end of Quivet Cemetery in E.
Dennis at the end of South Street.
Approximate length: One mile to Cape Cod
Bay, then up the beach 1/4 mile to a sign
“Vehicle Trail” to return. About 2 1/2 miles
round trip.
Facilities: None.
JOHNNY KELLEY RECREATION AREA
Location: At the corner of Bob Crowell Rd.
and Old Bass River Rd., S. Dennis.
Approximate length: 1 1/4 miles in length
