Tw o lang uages open every door along the w ay.” More than forty years of research consistently documents the power of immersion programs to help students attain high levels of bilingual and biliteracy proficiency. No other type of instruction, short of living in a second language environment, is as successful. ‒ Frank Smith What to expect in a Dual Language Program Proven Benefits Students achieve high proficiency in the immersion language. Students typically develop greater cognitive flexibility, demonstrating increased attention control, better memory, and strong problem solving skills. Students are more aware of, and show more appreciation towards, other cultures and people different than themselves. Students are better prepared for the global community and job markets where a second language is an asset. Students are more curious about and find it easier to acquire a third or fourth language in the future. A Dual Language Program offers a rich bilingual experience for young learners when their minds are developmentally best able to acquire a second language and develop curiosity and positive attitudes towards learning something new. Currently, West Linn-Wilsonville School District offers a K-5 Spanish Dual Language Program at two of the primary schools: Lowrie Primary School in Wilsonville and Trillium Creek Primary School in West Linn. Lowrie Primary – Two-Way Program The program at Lowrie Primary School is a two-way program. This means that about half of the students are native Spanishspeaking and about half of the students are native English-speaking. Trillium Creek – One-Way Program The program at Trillium Creek is a one-way program. This means that most, if not all, of the students are native English-speaking and learning Spanish as their second language. The West Linn-Wilsonville Dual Language Program is designed with a 50:50 model. This means that teaching and learning occurs in Spanish for half of the day and in English the other half of the day. In Grades K-2, students develop their Reading, Writing and Mathematics in Spanish. Social Studies, Science, Music and PE are taught in English. In Grades 3-5, Reading and Writing in English is added. Science is taught in Spanish instead of English. Teacher Qualifications Our Dual Language teachers have an Oregon Teaching License and are bilingual/biliterate in both Spanish and English. Some teachers have an added endorsement of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
