YOUTH LEADERSHIP 2016-2017 Who is eligible? Apply dual enrollment This prestigious program is available to high school juniors from county and city schools in Carter County who demonstrate leadership potential. Complete and return the Youth Leadership application, available at www.milligan.edu/ youthleadership, to the Chamber of Commerce (PO Box 190, Elizabethton, TN 37643) by May 20 to be eligible for an interview during the summer. Two recommendations are required per applicant and at least one must be from your school principal or counselor. Jump start your college education! Youth Leadership delegates are eligible to receive three (3) hours of dual enrollment credit (college/high school) at no extra cost. Credits are transferable to your college of choice. A transcript and special admission application is required for each student selected to the program who wishes to receive dual enrollment credit. Students also may participate in the program and opt out of dual enrollment credit. program benefits Grow as a leader. Boost your college resume and scholarship opportunities. Earn college credit in a FUN, CREATIVE, HANDSON environment. transportation For most sessions, transportation is provided to/from the Elizabethton Chamber of Commerce by the Carter County School System. selection Applications will be reviewed by a committee and top prospects will receive an interview request over the summer. Student delegates (25, representing the county’s five high schools) will be scored and selected by a committee based on application and verbal responses, as well as leadership potential. Cost $100 per student, includes food and travel for all sessions. Once notified of selection to the program, payment is due before the August orientation. The fee may be waived based on financial need. Courses: Foundations for Community Leadership I and II Expectations Students are excused from school one day per month, August-April, 8a-3p, to participate in Youth Leadership activities. There is a required two-day trip to Nashville in March and a final session in May during the evening that is open to friends and family. Some additional online and group work is expected. Students are responsible for completing any missed assignments and communicating with teachers, coaches, employers, etc., in advance. Makeup work will be assigned for excused absences to Youth Leadership. Due to the condensed, experiential format of the program, three excused absences will result in a request to withdraw from dual enrollment credit.
