Complete the attached reading guide. The questions require either short answers or
one-two page essays. Your answer should be based on the textbook only. Plagiarism will
not be tolerated. You may write by hand or type your answers.
Suggestion: read the chapter first. Then, answer the questions.
This Summer work is due on the first day of class. Plan ahead.
Place all completed work in a US History Dual Enrollment portfolio with your name on
it. This will be your first grade; late work can earn the maximum of 70%, if done
perfectly.
Short Answer (a paragraph or two, 5-10 sentences. Your answer should
synthesize the information. Do not copy the text word for word).
1. Explain the chapter’s title: “A New World.” What was new? Is “new” an appropriate
term? Does perspective play a role in calling the Americas new? Be sure to comment on
whether freedom was new in this New World.
2. Describe why the “discovery of America was one of the “most important events
recorded in the history of mankind”, according to Adam Smith.
3. Using what you read in this chapter about the movement of peoples, explain how
North America became the location where East and West came together.
4. One of the most striking features of the Native American society at the time of
European discovery was its sheer diversity. Support this statement.

5. Imagine
a meeting (unlikely though it may seem) between a European colonialist and a
North American Indian, sometime during the sixteenth century. Remarkably
untroubled by any language barrier, they fall into a substantial exchange of views over
such matters as religion, land, wealth, property, work, gender, and freedom.
Write a piece that accurately describes these cultural differences.
Your response could be an academic essay or a free format piece: movie script, short
story, or transcription (you may be creative).
Suggestion: Read the text with attention to detail. You might want to choose to create
a chart that will help you compare and contrast the Native American and European
values and ways of life in the 1500 – 1600s.

6. What impelled European explorers to look west across the Atlantic leading to the
discovery of the Americas?
7. What were the Chinese and Portuguese contributions to the Age of Exploration? What
were the effects of the Portuguese sailing around Africa?
8. How did the slave trade affect African society?
9. How did Columbus organize his voyages to the New World? What mistake did he
make? Why is the American continent not called Columbia?
10. The conquest of the New World by the Europeans resulted in interaction among
cultures. Discuss this interaction. What were the consequences for Native American
Indians of first European contact? In your view, did these consequences constitute
genocide?
11. How would European settlers explain their superiority to Native Americans and
justify both their conquest the Native lands and terminating their freedom?
12. Read “Voices of Freedom” primary sources (the two dark pages in the middle of the
chapter. Read the primary sources. Answer the three questions that follow. You should
write a paragraph per question.
13. Imagine you are an attorney accusing Spain of human rights violations in a sixteencentury world criminal court. Draw on the “Voices of Freedom” pieces in this chapter to
help you prepare the closing argument. What do you imagine Spain’s defense attorney
would argue? You may expand your answer to one page.
14. Both at home and in the New World, the Dutch enjoyed greater freedoms than any
other European citizens. Explain what kinds of liberties and freedoms the Dutch
recognized that other nations, such as Spain, did not. How did these notions of freedom
affect the development of their North American empire? Be sure to include the Indians
and slaves in your discussion.
15. Identify the meaning and historical significance of the following terms, names,
