The Paragraph Writing Strategy is a scaffolded, instructional methodology for helping students organize and write five different types of comprehensive paragraphs.
Instruction is provided in constructing a basic paragraph structure including, three
types of topic sentences, two detail, and three clincher sentences. All sentences are
organized with correct sequence, transitions, point of view, and verb tense. This
instruction is addressed deeper with narrative, informative and persuasive
paragraphs using claims and evidence in the writing samples. This strategy can be
implemented as part of the core curriculum at Tier 1 or as an intervention at Tiers 2
and 3. It is designed to meet the needs of students in grades 4-12. Embedded is the
use of the EDIT strategy to assist student in detecting and correcting spelling and
mechanical errors produced using a word-processing program.
Participants will:

Learn how to teach students to use a planning diagram to help them make decisions on critical components of a paragraph

Learn how to embed the strategy as a part of the core curriculum or to use as an
intervention

Learn how to use data collection tools to monitor implementation

Understand how the paragraph writing strategy aligns with the Common Core
*It is strongly recommended that participants be knowledgeable of
instructional methodology of Proficiency in Sentence Writing Strategy.
