University of Kansas: Paragraph Writing Strategy with EDIT Strategy Presented by Sue Meyer, Educational Consultant Thursday, October 9, 2014 Target Audience: Upper Elementary, Junior High, High School general and special educators, including ELL teachers; Speech Pathologists Forest View Educational Center 2121 S. Goebbert, Room C-102 Arlington Heights, IL Participants must enter the building and sign in at entrance #2 under District 214 sign. 8:15 a.m. — 8:30 a.m. Sign-in 8:30 a.m. — 3:30 p.m. Workshop (Lunch on your own) Teams teachers are encouraged to attend. Instructional materials provided. Materials are the property of your district/school. Deadline: Registration must be received no later than September 19 in order to receive materials. The Paragraph Writing Strategy is a scaffolded, instructional methodology for helping students organize and write five different types of comprehensive paragraphs. Instruction is provided in constructing a basic paragraph structure including, three types of topic sentences, two detail, and three clincher sentences. All sentences are organized with correct sequence, transitions, point of view, and verb tense. This instruction is addressed deeper with narrative, informative and persuasive paragraphs using claims and evidence in the writing samples. This strategy can be implemented as part of the core curriculum at Tier 1 or as an intervention at Tiers 2 and 3. It is designed to meet the needs of students in grades 4-12. Embedded is the use of the EDIT strategy to assist student in detecting and correcting spelling and mechanical errors produced using a word-processing program. Participants will: Learn how to teach students to use a planning diagram to help them make decisions on critical components of a paragraph Learn how to embed the strategy as a part of the core curriculum or to use as an intervention Learn how to use data collection tools to monitor implementation Understand how the paragraph writing strategy aligns with the Common Core *It is strongly recommended that participants be knowledgeable of instructional methodology of Proficiency in Sentence Writing Strategy.
