Because I was an early believer in Bruce, and Columbia Records knew it, WOUR was one of the stations that got the new song in advance, on a reel-to-reel tape. I was carrying it with me as we made the move, and WQSR (Quad 102 and a Half!) became the next station to start playing it. I saw rock ‘n’ roll future, and it turned out to be the sun setting into the Gulf of Mexico. One four-day weekend forty years ago this month, everything changed. On Friday, I was living and working in upstate New York, and four days later, in Sarasota. The seeds were sown the previous December, 1974. Six of us working at the progressive rock station WOUR in Utica all shared a small farmhouse at the top of a hill. Susan Berkley then got a job at a very cool radio station here, what was then WQSR. The upstate New York life at that space and time was near perfect, but there were those winters to deal with. The term wasn’t as widely used yet, but winter up there sucked. Susan started work at the station here on Florida’s Suncoast on December 1st. My wife-to-be Chris, our friend Jeff Chard and I came to visit right before New Year’s Eve, en route to a week in Negril, Jamaica. Sitting on the front porch on Beach Road on Siesta Key on a warm December 30th evening, we watched the sun set into the Gulf of Mexico. It had hit 80 degrees here that day; in Utica, it was more likely to be 18 degrees. Our reaction, especially that of Chris and me, was: You can actually live in a place like this? The next day we toured Susan’s radio station and I said to the program director, “I’d like to work here. In fact, I’d take the next job that you have, no matter what it is. Overnights, even.” It took until the summer, but that opening came. The shift was 7 to midnight on the air, and I jumped at it. Chris and I got everything packed up and moved over one weekend. I did my last show in Utica late Friday afternoon. First Page 10 Here’s… Jimmy! Making Radio Magic, Forty Years Ago. Photo by Rod Millington. stop—my parents’ place in New Jersey, my childhood home. We pulled in after midnight. The next day we made it to North Carolina, and Sunday did the rest of the trip to Siesta Key. The tail lights on the Datsun 510 stopped working that final day, so the last step was done in the dusk, with emergency flashers on, over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and down to Sarasota. The Siesta Key house we moved into, a rental made available a few days earlier, was very small, just two bedrooms/one bath, but it cost just $150 per month and it was a short walk away from our “private” beach. (Even more incredibly, when four years later, the radio career took us to WSHE in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, a good friend moved in to that same house and continued to live there for another two decades, at that same low rent.) rented the house and moved in on Monday, and started work at WQSR in Sarasota on Tuesday. I probably should have slated more time to make it, but It was a great move, a life-changing move. Travelin’ Music The music of that time will forever remain significant to me, just as a soundtrack to anyone’s major events does. But one especially meaningful song I brought with me hadn’t I’ve now been with Radio Margaritaville exactly sixteen years. Though I had played Jimmy Buffett’s music on the radio before coming to Florida, that was nothing compared to how important it became as soon as I got to WQSR. Right along with the Stones and Led Zeppelin, Buffett songs were an essential part of every radio show. The requests came in, and the airplay led to interviews. Jimmy and the band liked visiting here, playing shows, even rehearsing for tours and playing the ‘QSR team in softball. Those good times paved the way for what was ahead. So I did my last upstate NY radio show on Friday, moved 1450 miles over the weekend, August 2015 The Parrot Broadpoint Hair Co. There’s a saying of, “If we could see the world through the eyes of a child, we would see the magic in everything.” The same can be said about a former resident seeing their hometown through tourist sunglasses. Every time I visit family in Buffalo I’m discovering something else about the destination I once called home. With my recent visit, I finally did something totally touristy that I’ve never done and that was viewing Niagara Falls from Maid of the Mist. My parents, specifically my mom, were excellent in finding low cost and free things to do and this included viewing Niagara Falls from public vantage points but not hopping on a boat. Plus, as a kid I was a little scared of being on a boat. I feared it would motor under the powerful Falls and plunge into the violent whirlpool. provide the same view. I’m sorry it took so long to hop aboard the Maid of the Mist but glad I finally did it and happy to have shared the experience with my best friend. Harvest for the Harbor, Nov. 13. The Award is coordinated and sponsored by BB&T-Oswald Trippe and Company and BB&T Bank. The Blue Chip Community Business Award program was established nationally in 1990 to honor successful small businesses and to help them to learn from one another’s experiences. In 2008 the program was expanded to encompass the region, including Charlotte County and thus far, we have been excited to welcome one local winner, Old Monty’s Restaurant Pizzeria. We love to add more Charlotte County winners to the winners’ circle. Applications are available by calling us at the Chamber office - 941 639 3720. If you have a great story, but are concerned about the time it would take to write it or even putting your thoughts down on paper, we can help you with all of that. Don’t delay in getting your nomination in to us. The winners will be announced in early November at a special event hosted at the Harborside Event and Conference Center in Fort Myers. There are a couple of exciting things being proposed for events in our city, where the Punta Gorda Chamber has been asked to take a pivotal role in the organization. On October 31st, the Harbor Dragons of the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club are working very hard to bring back the War on the Peace Dragon Boat Festival in Laishley Park and the Chamber is helping them. We have added a new Page 18 Punta Gorda Chamber Update page to our website www. puntagordachamber.com which you will find under Quick Links on the right hand side, where you can read all about what Dragon Boating is and how to get your business, community group or non-profit involved in having a team. The festival is so much fun and has for three years, thanks to the Charlotte Harbor Paddlers, been a staple of our April calendar, but in 2014, the festival took a hiatus and we are hoping that the new October date will be a launch pad to get the festival back in full swing. Check out the web page and learn how to become a festival sponsor as well. Then in January 2016, more specifically the weekend of January 22-24th, we are working with the Peace River Picklers on a brand new event for Punta Gorda- a pickle ball tournament. It has been so much fun learning about this relatively new sport and how they expect 250 players to descend on our city to battle it out on the courts at Gilchrist Park. Watch our website for more details as they get confirmed. I personally think events such as these are a great boon to our city, adding variety and activity that just keeps growing. jazz vocalist to enter our stage. What would you like to accomplish this year? I’d describe myself as a human/musical fairy. My current address is The “Disney Magic” cruise ship but I grew up in the foothills of Colorado. Id like to visit my brother Peter who lives in India, live gratefully each day as I tour Europe, and take more risks creatively recording. I’d like to continue connecting with new, positive and inspiring people as I travel. What made you decide to make music a full time career? My fairy wings. Music is the magic that makes me fly. I sing 3 hours a night 6 nights a week on the Magic and I don’t say I work. Instead every night I say “I’m on my way to play!” What do you enjoy most about performing? When I sing to people I get to witness the power of a song. It’s an unusual gift to watch people burst out in laughter, cry and recall moments and memories that only music can evoke. I’m so grateful andhonored to be a small part of the personal process each listener experiences. And what do you like least? The only discomfort performing can bring me is created by own mind. If I allow myself to become self conscious or frightened of judgment I will lose the pleasure and fall down from fear. It takes faith to truly fly and I must trust that each person will hear what they need to hear in their own way. I prac- Page 24 Clara Oman tice meditation every day to help clear any potential fearful thoughts. If you had an opportunity to headline a world tour, who would you choose to open for you and why? In your music career what are you most proud of? My brothers Peter and Andrew. Because they are incredible solo artists and deserve to be heard. Plus we could all sing together in harmony and we would have a ball on the road together. I’m proud of my parents. They raised me in a very spiritual environment and named me Clara to instill it’s meaning in my life choices. “One who brings light” is the interpretation my dad taught me from when I was just a toddler. I’m proud of my rare and sheltered upbringing. I played classical music and hymns from church. I think it brings a lot of richness to the music I make now. 3 chord pop/ rock songs were not really in my realm of influence in my childhood. Who would you like to record a duet with? Shreya Ghoshal. She has a voice like a delicate bird and her technique is amazing. She is my favorite singer from India. August 2015 Any new projects in the works? I’m sketching new song ideas every day. My project is self discovery in fact through music and travel. As I travel the coast I learn to connect the dots between what matters and what to release. Life is a living and moving work of art. I’m currently sharing my findings via collages, videos and songs with my friends on FB, Twitter, and Instagram. Come follow along! What do you do in your down time? I explore the ports we sail into every day, practice dance work out videos, and read self help books. “The power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle and “The Magic” Rhonda Byrne are my current constant companions. Any secrets you would like to divulge? I quit smoking last year with the help of a guided meditation from www.guidedmind.com <http://www.guidedmind.com> What’s your message to the audience? Anything you would like to tell our readers? Thank you! For those of you who I have met and gotten to sing to in FL and on ships you have given me my career. Page 29 Parrot Key Leo (July 23 - August 22) “Headlice!” Is all you have to scream to get your favorite seat, it works great at the movie theater, restaurants or if you want the pool to yourself. You are welcome! Aquarius (January 20 February 18) Presenting yourself with a home-made cardboard award is probably not the most sane way to go about giving yourself a morale boost. Virgo (August 23 September 22) Just because people laugh at you doesn’t make you a comedian. That is better than people throwing things at you. You have that going for you this month! Congrats! Pisces (February 19 - March 20) Peaches and cream are a cheap and enjoyable dessert menu for any supper guests, unless someone has a food allergy. Have a phone close by to call 911 just in case. Libra (September 24 – October 23) The day is what you make it. Make it a great one! In short, don’t let anyone piss you off. J Aries (March 21 - April 19) Homeless people may wander up to you today and offer to buy the magazine you’re holding. But honestly it is not likely…. Scorpio (October 23 November 21) All of your better ideas have already been stolen and used in the past, which perhaps suggests you are just going downhill from here. Sad… Sagittarius (November 22 December 21) Old cartoons may hold a fascination for you as you try to recreate a classic ‘acme’ gag. Please don’t try to blow up anything this month… It won’t end well for you. Capricorn (December 22 January 19) All the advice I could share with you would blow your mind and leave nothing to the imagination. Don’t shun your naked body, express yourself in lots of new happy naked ways. Page 30 Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Login to every site you can and you’ll soon understand what the meaning of the internet is. You will have a better understanding of what others do with their free time…. Scary huh? Gemini (May 21 - June 21) You should buy some new electronics. For the rest of the month you will stay busy trying to figure out how it all works. At least that will keep you out of trouble for a while. Cancer (June 22 - July 22) Your friends won’t forgive you if you don’t take the opportunity you are presented with, most likely because they will also benefit from it.
