A Brief Overview of the CYCSA
The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia is the State’s premier yacht club and caters
for over 1200 members with a diverse range of sporting and social interests.
Located on the Le Fevre Peninsula at North Haven, the Club was incorporated in 1973.
Situated at just 5 minutes from Semaphore, 10 minutes from increasingly thriving
Port Adelaide, and 15 minutes from West Lakes, the CYCSA’s location is unreservedly
convenient.
The Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia covers approximately 36 hectares, which
includes water and land from the outer North Haven breakwater through to Lady
Gowrie Drive.
Today, through continued development and improvements, the Club boasts two
substantial marina basins, hardstand berthing, a prestigious clubhouse and outdoor
patio facilities, plus all the necessary ancillary amenities to confirm the Club’s leading
reputation.
The Club also manages Port Vincent Marina, located 30 nautical miles across Gulf St.
Vincent on Yorke Peninsula.
Currently the CYCSA is a member of Marina Industry Association of Australia, the
Boating Industry Association of South Australia, Yachting Australia, Yachting South
Australia, Clubs SA, and Business SA to name just a few.
Page 2 • Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook
Marina East
CYCSA Marina East has berthing for 240 vessels up to 22 metres and 150
hardstanding berths up to 12 metres. Marina berths are available in single and double
pens, and are serviced by power and water. Hardstanding berths are serviced by power,
water and a magnificent dual lane launch and retrieval ramp, all in a fully fenced,
floodlit, security alarm protected sealed area.
Mariners Restaurant is located within the Clubhouse and is an excellent facility
which, combined with Horizons Function Room, boasts a capacity for 330 people,
with adjacent indoor and outdoor bar facilities. Dockside Bar and Bistro is part of a
substantial and popular undercover patio area that overlooks the marina.
The Clubhouse is supplemented by the Kinnaird Room, a small training and conference
facility, and an impressive paved barbecue area that provides refrigeration and kitchen
facilities to members. Call Reception on 8248 4222 if you would like to make use of
these facilities.
Secure car parking, showers, toilets, workshop and slipping areas provide excellent
facilities for members’ needs, while nearby services include transport, shops, chandlery,
engineering and marine services.

Marina West
Marina West boasts 73 berths ranging in size from 11 up to 35 metres, reflecting the
growing popularity of bigger boats and addressing the need for longer berths to safely
moor large yachts and power boats. A first class amenities building is located at the
top of the Marina West gangway. Facilities include digital television, internet access,
shower and change room amenities and coffee/tea station. As with Marina East, these
facilities are fully fenced, floodlit, and security alarm protected.
Port Vincent Marina
The CYCSA manages Port Vincent Marina on the beautiful Yorke Peninsula, just 30
nautical miles across the gulf from North Haven. It’s a convenient cruising destination
and the ideal way to optimise boat usage out of Adelaide, having all the hallmarks of a
family summer holiday playground.
With shower and toilet facilities available and berthing for up to 90 vessels, there is a
wide range of berth sizes available for lease and purchase through the Club.
Visiting yachts are always welcome at any of the CYCSA Marinas – simply call the
office in advance on (08) 8248 4222.
Page 4 • Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook
External Moorings
Members are able to utilise chain moorings at Black Point (maintained by the Fishing
Association) and Stansbury (maintained by the Cruising Association). The cost to use
the moorings is very reasonable and funds go towards maintenance of the moorings.
To book a mooring, please call Reception on (08) 8248 4222
Black Point moorings are located approximately 300m east of the boat ramp and
200m off shore and are marked by red foam buoys with CYC in black. The mooring
chains all have rope attached for convenient attachment of boat lines.
For GPS coordinates see the diagram below.
Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook • Page 5
External Moorings
Stansbury moorings are located in a triangle around the GPS coordinates listed below
and are marked by red foam buoys with CYC in black. The mooring chains all have
rope attached for convenient attachment of boat lines.
For GPS coordinates see the diagram below.
Edithburg
The Cruising Association has been given approval to lay moorings at Edithburg.
Final details and GPS locations will be posted on the Club website as soon as they
become available.

Quality, Safety and Environmental Certification
For some years now, the CYCSA has been certified by TQCSI against International
Standard ISO 14001 for our Environmental Management System. This means that we
adopt best practice initiatives to protect the environment to the best of our ability.
We have now successfully integrated that Environmental Management System with
Quality and OHS Management. This means that we adopt world’s best practice
for the way we operate, including our business practices, personnel safety and the
environment.
We are now certified against all three Standards for management: ISO 9001, ISO
14001 and AS 4801. The CYCSA is one of the first marinas in the world to achieve
Level 4 ISO 14001 Clean Marinas status.
The CYCSA is currently the only marina in Australia and, we believe, the first in the
world to achieve this status.
We continually strive to improve how we serve members, ensure workplace safety and
care for the environment. Members can help us by letting us know of any concerns,
complaints and ideas. You can email them to [email protected]

Berth Information
Berth Ownership
Berth owning members of the CYCSA have the unique flexibility over the title of their
berths because of the Club’s freehold ownership of the land and water, which is a
distinct difference from other marinas. This means that berth owners may treat their
berths as freehold assets and can lease out or sell their berths to their advantage or as
their circumstances and boating needs change.

Boating Facilities
Slipping/Crane
The Club is extremely proud of its slipping facilities and employs a full time Slipmaster.
If you wish to book in your boat, please contact Reception on 8248 4222 to arrange a
suitable time.
The Club has its own horizontal-lift slipway which can handle craft up to 20 metres
and 25 tonnes – irrespective of tide.
Adjacent to the slipway is the crane wharf with a fixed arm 1.6 tonne radial crane for
mast removal and other lifting requirements. Members are required to obtain tuition
on the use of the crane. Please contact Reception on 8248 4222 to organise tuition.
In and around the slipway are substantial work bench and maintenance facilities.
Slipping and maintenance is for the exclusive use of Senior Club members for a very
modest fee.
Workshop/Maintenance Shed
A workshop/maintenance shed is situated adjacent to the slipway and launching ramp.
The workshop is available for members’ use and the key can be obtained from the
Club office. Equipment on hand includes a drill press, pedestal grinder, belt sander,
work bench and vice.
Launch Ramps
The dual lane launch ramp within the Club premises is for the exclusive use of Club
members with boats stored in the hardstanding area. The Club also owns and operates
the North Haven Boat Ramp. Fees paid ensure its maintenance for community use and

Environment and Safety
Security
A security beam rings the entire Club facility. Please be aware that the system can
be activated if the perimeter line is crossed in the evening. Please help the Club by
keeping away from the fence. In addition, the Club has regular security patrols. Where
possible please carry some form of CYCSA identification to assist the night patrolmen.
Access
For your protection, the Club offers one gate access card per member. If you lose your
card or it is stolen, please notify the office immediately. Replacement cards will be
re-issued at a reasonable cost. To activate a gate, hold the card directly in front of the
card reader at a distance of approximately 2cm until the red light on the reader turns
green. If you have any problems with your card, please notify the Club office.
Rubbish/Recycling
General rubbish and recycling bins are conveniently located at all three marinas. See
individual marina plans printed in the back of this book for their location.
Spray Painting
No member or contractor shall undertake spray painting within the confines of the
Cruising Yacht Club without permission of the Executive Officer or Slipmaster.
Regulations covering spray painting including types of paints and spray equipment
are as follows:
• Spray painting may only be carried out on the Slipway apron and approaches to
the launching ramp.
• Spray painting may only be carried out when the wind is from the south or
southwest at no more than 5 knots.
• Except for minor touch up work only anti-fouling paint may be used.
• Except for minor touch up work only airless spray equipment may be used.
• Any person spray painting shall create an exclusion zone 6 metres from the vessel
being sprayed, using signed bollards provided by CYCSA.
• All personnel working inside the exclusion zone shall wear appropriate respirators.
Full face and half face respirators that rely on facial fit are not acceptable if the

Oil Spills
Oil spills are of concern to the Club. If you see anything please report to the office.
For large spills, an Environmental Spill Kit (emergency orange wheelie bin) is located at
the bottom of the walkways in Marina East and West and in the marina office at Port
Vincent (If the office is closed call 0414 611 110 for access). They contain:
• boom to trap substances, and
• soaker pads to mop up.
Easy operating instructions are listed on the inside of the lid. Please advise the office as
soon as practicable if a spill has occurred.
Isolating Transformer/Galvanic Isolator
Club marinas provides power for use on vessels
with a direct connection to the marina low-voltage
electrical supply which is connected to a copperbased marina electrical protective earthing system.
An isolating transformer fitted on-board to isolate
the low-voltage electrical system of your boat from
the marina low-voltage electrical supply system may
reduce corrosion activity caused by the coupling of your boat’s earth to the marina
electrical protective earthing system and/or other recreational boats.
Additional sacrificial anodes or galvanic isolators complying with AS/NZS 3004.2
Clause 4.6.4 may be used to reduce these effects. (Refer to the AS/NZS 2382 series of
Standards for suitable cathodic protection practices.)
Your recreational boat’s low-voltage electrical system must comply with
AS/NZS 3004.2.
On Arrival
•
•
•
•
•
The low-voltage electrical supply at this marina is at 240 V, 50 Hz supplied by
socket-outlets which will accommodate a Standard Australian 15A 3pin plug. The
maximum available current is 15A.
Precautions should be taken to prevent each supply lead from sagging or falling
into the water and, particularly, to prevent either end of the supply lead falling
into the water if it should become disengaged.
Only one boat supply lead should be connected to any one socket-outlet.
The supply lead should be in one length and should not be used while coiled.
The entry of moisture and salt into a boat’s appliance-inlet may cause a hazard.
Examine carefully and clean before connecting to the marina low-voltage electrical
supply.
Page 18 • Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook
Boat Owner Information
Before Leaving
•
•
•
Ensure that the marina low-voltage electrical supply is switched off and the flexible
cord is disconnected.
The supply lead should be disconnected first from the marina socket-outlet and
then from the boat appliance inlet. Any cover that may be provided to protect the
appliance inlet from the weather should be securely replaced.
The supply lead should be coiled up and stored in a dry location where it will not
be damaged.
Power Leads
Vessels connected to shore power must do so via an approved, tested and tagged
power lead that complies with AS/NZS 3004:2, the current standard for use of leads in
a marina environment. Ensure tags are visible at shore end.
Failure to comply with these requirements for safe use of electrical power in the
CYCSA mooring basin and the hardstand area will result in non-complying systems
being disconnected. A copy of the current Australian Standard for marina electrical
installation is available for members use and familiarisation at the main office.
Australian Standard AS/NZS 3004:2.
Marina Electrical Supply
Please ensure that you do not accidentally switch off the power supply to surrounding
vessels. It is recommended that all vessels install a low voltage protection system to
their batteries.
Marina Tolerances
The Board of the CYCSA has generously permitted a 10% boat length tolerance to
all berths in Marina East, and a 5% tolerance in Marina West. A vessel’s length must
not exceed the maximum tolerance allowed on a particular berth. Vessel length is
determined by the distance between the boat’s most forward and aft points. Under
no circumstances should any part of the vessel (bowsprit, davits or anchors etc) project
over the walkway or beyond the allowable berth space. Mooring in the slipping area is
strictly prohibited.
Mooring at the Main Walkway
Vessels are not to be moored at the main walkway in Marina East for more than 10
minutes without the permission of the Executive Officer.
Owners/Skippers are reminded that whilst moored at the main walkway in Marina East
their vessel severely restricts the manoeuvring room for vessels moored at the southern
end of B and C rows.
Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook • Page 19
Boat Owner Information
No vessel shall be left at a walkway unattended at night without permission from the
Club office.
Mooring Lines and Fenders
Mooring lines should be permanently attached to the pen cleats. Both ends of the lines
should have an eye splice and should be of a specific length to keep the boat secured
in its pen.
Mooring line should be good quality and commensurate in size with the length and
weight of the vessel. Suggested minimum sizes:
• 10 metre minimum diameter of ½” or 12mm
• 20 metre minimum diameter of ¾” or 18mm
• 30 metre minimum diameter of 1” or 25mm
Bow In
Stern In
If your boat is heavier than average, or has greater windage, or is docked where it is
subjected to surge, you should choose the next larger size line.
Insurance - Members’ Scheme
In 2003 the CYCSA (JLT) Discretionary Trust was launched. The independent Trust is for
CYCSA members only to cover marine risks. To date over 200 members have joined
the scheme. Any fund surplus is returned to members to offset premiums.
To find out more contact Bronia Henty-Smith at AIB on 8418 0260.
Insurance/Public Liability
It is a mandatory requirement that all vessels within the CYCSA must provide proof of
Third Party Insurance (incorporating the CYCSA), to the value of $20,000,000, before
being brought onto the Club premises. It is up to the member to supply proof in the
form of a certificate or copy of the policy and to make sure records are maintained and
updated each year.
Page 20 • Cruising Yacht Club South Australia Members Handbook
Boat Owner Information
Insurance Contractors
All contractors on CYCSA property are required to undergo site induction and comply
with the rules of the CYCSA.
Any contractor operating in the CYCSA must be covered by $10,000,000 Public
Liability Insurance. Renewal certificates must be provided to the office annually. Keys
to boats will not be issued from the Club office unless the Club holds a relevant
insurance certificate.
Members who use contractors who have not been inducted, or contractors without
appropriate insurance are liable in
the event of an accident. Contractors
that do not comply with CYCSA
requirements may be refused entry.
Club Registration Numbers
YC-prefixed Club registration numbers
can be issued to members of the
Club on request. The relevant printed
form for the issue of Club registration
numbers is available at the Club office.
This form will need to be taken to the
Department for Transport, Energy and
Infrastructure to be approved (fees apply).
You may also like to view our list of available sail numbers in case you wish to obtain
corresponding numbers.
Transfer/Cancellation of Boat Registration
When a boat registered with Club YC prefix is sold the owner must complete the
Notification of Transfer on the back of the Certificate of Registration. Under existing
regulations the new owner will be entitled to any remaining registration and to the use
of the registration number currently displayed on the boat.
To prevent the loss of Club numbers into the general community, Club members must
exchange their Club registration number for an ordinary number before selling the
boat.
Department of Transport will continue to require evidence of Club membership before
issuing Club numbers for new boats or to new members. Once issued, the preservation
of Club numbers ultimately rests with the member and not with the Club.

Flags and Ensigns
Club Burgees
Club burgees are normally flown when the owner is on
board and should remain hoisted by day and night, both
at sea and in harbour. It is normally worn at the masthead
(top of the main mast) or if a powerboat without a mast,
from a small flagstaff on the bow.
Ensigns
Australian yachts and powerboats may, if they so wish, fly
either the Australian National Flag or the Australian Red
Ensign. It should be worn on a special staff at the stern
of the vessel and when in harbour, it should be hoisted
at 0800 hours and lowered at sunset. It may be worn at
all times at sea, or should be hoisted for identification
purposes, ie when in sight of a warship or signal station,
etc.
If it is not possible to wear the ensign at the stern, it
should be worn, in a gaff rigged sailing vessel, at the
peak of the gaff, or on the starboard cross-trees or lower
spreader. Yachts do not wear an ensign when racing. It
must never be worn below any other flag or ensign.
Unless your vessel is registered as a British ship, or is on the
register of a Royal Yacht Club and a warrant held, you are
not entitled to wear a plain or ‘defaced’ blue ensign. You
should not use flags on your boat that you are not entitled
to fly.

Associations
The CYCSA is unique in that a number of Associations operate within the framework
of the Club yet have a high level of autonomy. If you are interested in joining any of
the Associations, please contact the office.
Racing Association
The Racing Association operates all the racing activities of the Club. The annual racing
program comprises ten series and five regattas. The summer season takes the form
of Saturday and the occasional Sunday Club Championship racing and Wednesday
evening Twilight racing. An extensive Short-handed racing program and Winter Series is
conducted during the colder months.
Div 1, Div 2, and J24s compete from the mid October to mid April for the Club
Championship in the Inshore, Coaster and Offshore Series. The Inshore Series consists
of 14 races for Div 1 and Div 2. 20 races are on the program for J24s which includes a
combination of windward/leeward and fixed mark courses. The Coaster Series consists
of 9 coastal (Cat 6) races conducted during daylight hours, while the Offshore Series is
made up of 3 (Cat 3) races over 150nm and 4 (Cat 3) races under 100nm.
Whilst all boats can compete under the Club handicap (PHS), an IRC division (Div 1 and
Div 2) is also offered and J24s may compete as a One Design Class. Boats competing
under IRC may nominate for the elite South Australian IRC Championship, a 12-race
series which combines Inshore, Offshore and Coaster Racing. This series is open to all
boats in the State which hold a current IRC and Cat 3 Certificate. A new innovation is an
exciting 9-race Inshore/Offshore series combining 4 coaster races and 5 offshore races.
Twilight racing is extremely popular during the summer and the CYCSA offers two
Wednesday Twilight Series – one before and one after Christmas. The Twilight Series
is a great opportunity for the novice ‘racer’ or more casual sailor to compete amongst
the entire fleet. No spinnakers are allowed in the Cruising Division thus alleviating the
need for experienced crew on board. These races are a great social event, ending with
a gourmet BBQ, presentations and prizes, and are a great opportunity to break up the
working week and make some new friends.
Highlights of the calendar year
include the Queen of the Gulf
Regatta, the Great Southern
Regatta, the Commodore’s
Shield Regatta and our main
event the Premier’s Cup
Regatta.

All Racing Association members must be members of the CYCSA.
Fishing Association
The Fishing Association of the CYCSA has many functions during the year varying
from satisfying the keen trophy seeking fishermen to the family outing. For the cost
of a small subscription per annum, you can participate in these activities. The Fishing
Association provides a large freezer for association members to store bait at the Club.
During the year you have the chance to win one of three trophies, or win the whole
three! Trophies are awarded to the member catching the heaviest game fish, shark and
ray. These trophies are presented during the Seafood Night.
Cruising Association
There is no joining fee for the Cruising Association, just ask the office to put you on
the mailing list. As a Committee, it is hoped that the events the association sponsors
both on water and land will assist to increase your circle of friends and help you to
become more proficient on the water. There are many members who will be happy to
help you make that first trip across the gulf or that initial long distance journey, be it in
a powerboat or yacht.
If you wish to know more about the Association, then come along to some of the
functions or speak to one of our committee members who will be happy to answer
your questions. The Club office can provide the names and phone numbers of
committee members upon request.
Social Activities Association
The main purpose of the Social Activities Association is to arrange social functions at
the Clubhouse that appeal to all members of the Club. These functions are a fantastic
way for new members to meet other members and get involved in the social aspects of
the Club.
Regular functions include the Boat Hop, the very popular Mouse Cup, the Children’s
Christmas Party and the Christmas Dinner Dance, and other functions during the
winter months. The Social Activities Association host an annual Commodore’s Dinner
in August which is a formal ‘Black Tie’ affair.

Yacht Club of South Australia. Training can assist members with obtaining essential
qualifications required for different levels of competition and recreational boating.
The CYCSA Marine Academy is a recognised Yachting Australia Training Centre and
uses fully qualified and accredited instructors. Courses throughout the year will range
from introductory to advanced and cover all areas of boating, navigation and safety
and include:
• Introductory Keelboat
• Competent Crew
• Powerboat Handling
• Inshore Skipper
• Coastal Navigation
• Marine Radio
• Safety and Survival at Sea
The CYCSA Marine Academy also holds a very successful Junior School Holiday
Program during the summer months which includes various on-water and on-land
activities, including keelboat and dinghy sailing, kayaking, snorkeling and fishing.

Radio Communications
On race days the CYCSA race office maintains listening watch on 27.94 MHz, VHF
Channel 77 from 90 minutes before the start of Inshore Races until 1 hour after the
conclusion of racing.
Marine Radio Information and Radio Networks
Further information on Marine Radio operation can be found at www.sa.gov.au by
clicking on ‘Transport, Travel and Motoring’, ‘Boating and Marine’ and then ‘Marine
Radio’.
Marine Radio Operating Tips
Maintain a listening watch on one or more of the International Distress Frequencies at
all times. Observe the three minute Silence Periods on the hour and half-hour. After
calling the required Station, give your ship’s name, call sign and operating frequency
or channel. Profane or obscene language is strictly prohibited. Speak clearly. Exchange
regular radio checks to ensure your radio is operating. Always return to one of the
Safety and Calling channels after making a call.
Radio Installation/Operating Checks
In order to obtain/revalidate a safety inspection form for Category 1 and Category 2
boats, one of the provisions of Yachting Australia’s Special Regulations requires yacht
owners to have their radio installation/operation checked annually by a qualified
technician. Please have this check done before commencing the overall safety
inspection.
Volunteer Coast Guard
When cruising you are encouraged to ‘log on’ with the Volunteer Coast Guard (VCG).
Inform them of your destination, your estimated time of arrival (ETA) and how many
persons on board (POB). It is also important to ‘log off’ with the VCG once you have
completed your passage.
Please remember that the Coast Guard Stations are a voluntary organisation providing
a valuable service to our community, one which you may consider joining.
Weather Reports
Club members are urged to check weather reports before departing the marina. Up-todate weather and tides information can be found on the CYCSA website homepage at
