PROTECT COMFORT WITHOUT COMPROMISE. BULWARK iQ SERIES. TECGEN. TECASAFE PLUS. PROTECT Hard Yakka’s reputation is built on hard work. We have produced quality workwear for over 80 years. Our products are specifically engineered to endure the toughest of conditions while delivering comfort, safety and durability at all times. PROTECT is our most serious range of workwear yet. It’s tough, comfortable and practical – but where it really delivers is protection against flash fire and arc flash. We have partnered with Bulwark iQ Series®, TECGEN™ and Tecasafe® Plus to provide products which deliver superior comfort and design innovation without compromising your safety. Our PROTECT fabrics meet the toughest safety standards worldwide, including the Australian and New Zealand guidelines for flame resistant garments and the USA’s NFPA 70E and NFPA 2112 guidelines. Importantly for our Australian conditions, Hard Yakka PROTECT not only offers you superior flame resistance, it also helps to reduce heat stress. Until now, traditional fire resistant (FR) workwear has been hot and heavy to wear. Unfortunately, in warmer climates or while performing labour intensive work, some tradespeople forgo FR workwear in favour of cotton based workwear with no FR qualities at all. In the event of an arc flash or flash fire incident, cotton fabric burns and will continue burning. Our PROTECT workwear not only self-extinguishes flame, but also helps to reduce heat stress. Whether you work in mining, energy, oil and gas or electrical, here’s what it comes down to: put on Hard Yakka PROTECT workwear and you’re buying yourself a few vital seconds that could end up saving your life. An arc flash is not an electric shock – it is when uncontrolled amounts of electric current travel through air between two conductors. Flame resistant fabrics and garments are intended to resist ignition, prevent the spread of flames, and to self-extinguish almost immediately upon removal of the ignition source. Flame resistant workwear is abbreviated in this catalogue as 'FR'. The fibres used in these fabrics, such as cotton, are not normally considered protective and become flame resistant because of the treatment added. Fabrics made from treated synthetic fibres, which are extruded with a flame resistant chemical in the fibre forming process, become flame resistant for the life of the garment because the flame resistant qualities cannot be removed by wear or laundering. Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV) The incident energy on a fabric or material that results in a 50% probability that sufficient heat transfer through the tested specimen is predicted to cause the onset of a second degree skin burn injury. This value is presented in calories per square centimetre (cal/cm2) and represents the maximum capability for arc flash protection of a particular garment. An alternative measure to ATPV is the Energy Break-Open Threshold (EBT), which is also measured in cal/cm2. Cotton Drill Workwear Clothing designed to do everyday work. There is a misconception that untreated 100% cotton fabric is somehow “flame resistant”. This is simply not true. While heavyweight, untreated 100% cotton fabrics may be more difficult to ignite, they can and will ignite and continue to burn if exposed to an ignition source. Fire Retardant Workwear Structural garments targeted to firefighting industries that are intended to prevent ignition. 4 Flash Fire A rapidly moving flame front which can be a combustion explosion. Hazard Risk Category (HRC) – NFPA 70E Guidelines The categories in which ATPV ratings are classified. Each classification represents a level of protection. HRC 1: 4 cal/cm2 minimum HRC 2: 8 cal/cm2 minimum HRC 3: 25 cal/cm2 minimum HRC 4: 40 cal/cm2 minimum Inherent FR Fabric The Great Debate – Treated Versus Inherent FR Fabrics: Industry literature often implies that one fabric is better than the other, however like most things, everything has its strengths and weaknesses. Rather than focusing on how the fabric becomes flame resistant when we talk about FR and protection, the following points are most critical: 1.That the development of an FR fabric has been completed correctly and consistently Inherently flame resistant fibres are defined as having flame resistance as an essential characteristic of the fibre. It is a fabric that does not support combustion and has innate flame resistant properties that are permanent and inseparable; the flame resistant qualities will never wash out. 2.That the flame resistant properties of the fabric last for the life of the garment Treated FR Fabric The flame resistant properties within Hard Yakka PROTECT fabrics are proven to protect and perform. A fabric that has flame resistant properties added by chemical process to suppress fire ignition and flame spread. 3.That the flame resistant fabric is proven for performance and protection through independent laboratory testing and end user trials HI-VISIBILITY DAY HI-VISIBILITY DAY/NIGHT UPF RATING A garment that uses high-visibility materials for outdoor use only. The high-visibility material must encircle the upper torso. Complies with AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 High-Visibility Safety Garments Class Day. For use in day, night, dawn, dusk or in poor weather conditions where there is illumination from headlights. Complies with AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 High-Visibility Safety Garments Class Day/Night. An Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating for Ultraviolet Radiation transmitted through a fabric onto the skin. Look for garments with a UPF 40 or 50+ rating to be assured of excellent protection. LIGHTWEIGHT FABRIC VENTILATED MOISTURE MANAGEMENT Fabric is lightweight to keep you cool and comfortable. Garments are engineered with ventilation at key heat stress points to allow airflow and cool the body to reduce heat stress. Fabric is engineered to wick moisture away from the skin and to the fabric surface so that you stay dry, cool and safe. NFPA 70E: HRC 2 NFPA 2112 Fabric which complies with the USA's National Fire Protection Association Guidelines National Electrical Code, Hazard Risk Category 2 classification. Fabric which complies with the USA’s National Fire Protection Association 2112 Standard performance criteria. NFPA 70E: HRC 1 HRC 1 Fabric which complies with the USA's National Fire Protection Association Guidelines National Electrical Code, Hazard Risk Category 1 classification. HRC 2 5 Every day, workers expose themselves to potentially hazardous environments that cause flash fires and arc flash, leading to common injuries such as burns, respiratory system damage, hearing damage and even fatalities. The demand for flame resistant clothing is growing rapidly as industries build an understanding of the hazardous nature of their working environments and their apparel protection requirements. The use of flame resistant clothing provides the necessary protection to reduce the risk of serious, or even fatal injuries. Oil & Gas Hard Yakka PROTECT workwear is specifically designed to cater for the increasing demands of multiple industries including electrical and energy, oil and gas and mining. Heat stress management is also critical, with most upstream oil and gas activities concentrated in hot climates. Flame resistant clothing aims to provide both FR protection and breathability through fabric technology and garment design. Electrical & Energy In the electrical and energy industries the most common risk is an arc flash event. Arc flash events typically occur around energised equipment such as power boards, power lines and general powered equipment. Arc flash events can cause serious and even fatal injuries. Flame resistant workwear in these industries is intended to self-extinguish flame that has ignited on the garment and provide protection against seconddegree burns. Heat stress management is also important for safety. 6 Oil and gas industry workers can be exposed to flash fires, arc flash events (if operating energised equipment) and extreme heat conditions. Wearing flame resistant clothing that self-extinguishes can give workers much needed time to escape a flash fire and dramatically reduce burn injuries. Mining Miners can be exposed to both flash fires and arc flash events. Typical mine site workers at risk include boilermakers, drillers and electricians. Flame resistant workwear can protect workers against second and third degree burns and manage heat stress in hot/humid conditions. Flame resistant fabric is driven by standards and specifications and must pass intensive testing before it can be offered in any marketplace. Most regions conform to a type of international standard, with the USA’s NFPA guidelines being the most common. A basic understanding of how flame resistance is defined and measured is very important. Included is an overall listing of common industry standards both internationally as well as locally. NFPA 70E – National Fire Protection Association, National Electrical Code The USA's NFPA 70E guidelines require employees working on or near energised parts and equipment to wear situationally appropriate FR clothing that meets the requirements of test method ASTM F1506. ASTM F1506 provides the minimum performance specifications for protective clothing and outlines the required testing methods to measure the Arc Thermal Protection Value (ATPV). ENA NENS 09 – National Guidelines for the Selection, Use & Maintenance of Personal Protective Equipment for Electrical Hazards Energy Networks Association is an Australian body who administer NENS 09 guidelines which set the minimum standards for the selection, use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE) when used to protect employees against electrical hazards within the electricity supply industry. NFPA 2112 – National Fire Protection Association Standard on Flame Resistant Garments for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Flash Fire AS/NZS 4824 - Protective Clothing for Firefighters — Requirements and Test Methods for Protective Clothing used for Wildland Firefighting (ISO 15384:2003, MOD) Originating in the USA, NFPA 2112 is an industry guide on flame resistant garments for protection of industrial personnel against flash fire. The standard provides minimum performance criteria and outlines 17 test methods including: flame resistance, afterflame, char-length, thermal shrinkage resistance and heat resistance. This Australia/New Zealand standard has been reproduced from the International Standard ISO 15384:2003 – Protective clothing for firefighters – Laboratory test methods and performance requirements for wildland firefighting clothing. This standard details minimum performance requirements for protective clothing designed for use for extended periods during wildlands fire fighting and associated activities. ISO 14116:2008 – Protective Clothing Protection Against Heat & Flame ISO is an independent European based organisation that develops international standards for participating member countries. ISO standard 14116:2008 outlines performance requirements for the limited flame spread properties of materials, material assemblies and protective clothing in order to reduce the possibility of the clothing burning. Protective clothing complying with ISO 14116:2008 protects workers against brief contact with small igniting flames where there is no significant heat hazard and without presence of another type of heat. As this standard is for the purposes of certifying firefighting garments, we only refer to this standard for specific test methods – not certification – of our PROTECT range. Australian and New Zealand High-Visibility Standards Standards for high-visibility clothing dictate workwear colour and design and ensure workers are seen in high risk situations. All Hard Yakka PROTECT Hi-Visibility Workwear is certified to meet AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 for high-visibility safety garments. 7 BULWARK iQ SERIES Bulwark is the world’s largest FR brand with over 40 years of technical leadership in the industry. In a market first, we’ve brought the new Bulwark iQ Series workwear to Australasia. Defining a new level of comfort and protection, the Bulwark iQ Series features a lightweight, flame resistant knit fabric that uses a more effective chemistry to provide superior protection and reduce the risk of heat stress. Bulwark iQ Series is a specifically engineered fibre and yarn with dual elemental protection. It combines phosphorus, which accelerates char formation to act as an insulator, with a nitrogen source that provides cooling to make FR chemistry on fabric more effective than other traditional FR fabrics. The more effective the chemistry on the fabric, the less mass the fabric has to have. Mass no longer equals protection. Microscopic imagery of FR knit: When combined in the right ratio, these elements provide superior protection from flame and arc flash hazards. Bulwark iQ Series chemistry uses phosphorus with a higher ratio of nitrogen. The more nitrogen, the more bubbles form on char surface. More bubbles equals more protection. The Bulwark iQ Series also employs comfortably cool technology and design that translates into FR workwear that’s more breathable than anything comparable on the market without compromising protection. With greater comfort, comes greater compliance. Microscopic imagery of an alternate FR knit, using traditional ammoniated phosphorus-based chemistry.
