As Captain C.S. Kong explained at the Annual General Meeting held on April 20, 2016, the signing of reciprocal agreements with other clubs is to allow golfers the chance to accustom themselves to going out to these other clubs to play golf, given the expiring land lease situation in 2021 at Keppel Club. An added advantage for Keppel Club members is that they would have no restrictions going to these reciprocal clubs to use their facilities, except to pay for buggy fees and caddy fees. Most recently, Keppel Club signed reciprocal agreements with Palm Springs Golf & Country Club in Batam, Indonesia and the locally based Changi Golf Club on April 8 and April 19, 2016 respectively. The reciprocal agreement with Palm Springs Golf & Country Club commenced from May 1, 2016 and will last for one year while the reciprocal agreement with Changi Golf Club will be valid until termination in accordance to the terms of agreement. Signing of reciprocal agreement with Palm Springs (L to R): Mr Steven Japari, GM of Palm Springs, President Lai Mun Onn and Captain C.S. Kong. Signing of reciprocal agreement with Changi Golf Club: Captain C.S. Kong and Captain Vincent Teo. In addition, a reciprocal agreement was also signed between Keppel Club and Palm Resort Golf & Country Club (Johor, Malaysia) at the end of April 2016. commenced from May 1, 2016 and will last for one year. Editor’s Note First of all, I would like to thank everyone for extending a warm welcome to the new Communications team. We are grateful for the feedback received on Keppel Links, and look forward to hearing more from you as we go along. C LU B N E W S Terms of new reciprocal agreements In this issue, we are pleased to announce reciprocal arrangements with three other clubs– Changi Golf Club, Palm Springs Golf & Country Club (Batam, Indonesia) and Palm Resort Golf & Country Club (Johor Bahru, Malaysia). Find out more about the privileges accorded to you when you play there, and do fill up our feedback form after your trip so our golf office can serve you better. As usual, our golf calendar has been buzzing, with the Ladies Committee Cupcum-ASM and the 27th Singapore Ladies Amateur Championship all taking place on our beautiful course. We are also pleased to present a new feature called “Through Keppelites’ Eyes” and we kick off this column with an amazing array of photos from our member, Desmond Chen. Finally, don’t forget to put on your dancing shoes and join us at the next Let’s Dance event on June 11. And get your little ones involved in our Sports Camp on June 20. Have a great month ahead! A scenic view of the golf course at Changi Golf Club. Changi Golf Club has a tight and challenging 9-hole course with three unique features in its early years. Interestingly, the 8th fairway was once listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the narrowest fairway in the world. Next, the 6th hole was without a fairway and golfers had to ‘borrow’ the 5th fairway to play their second shot up the slope to reach the green. The clubhouse overlooks the Changi beach which offers a panoramic view of the sea and Pulau Ubin. The Fragrant Harbour has lost its position as a shopper’s and food paradise. Somehow its vibrancy has vanished. Where have all the shoppers gone? Gone indeed are the rowdy exchanges in stores between sales staff and customers. Less boisterous is the cacophony of diners’ cackles and wails in restaurants and eateries. Missing is the hustle and bustle of the streets. And fewer taxis are weaving in and out of lanes hurriedly. This is not the Hong Kong I know of. But this was what I felt and saw on a recent visit there, in March-April. What was most apparent was the absence of the hordes of China nationals from the mainland. Sure, you could still hear and see them wherever you go, but they don’t swarm around you as in past years. And they certainly don’t storm the entire shopping malls anymore! In fact, those shopping malls I visited on Nathan Road in Kowloon – shoppers’ favourite hunting ground – were rather quiet morning, day and night. Window-shopping seemed to be the name of the game. The shoppers | 4 | Keppel Links Post card of a bustling street in Kowloon, Hong Kong, circa 2004. were mainly non-China tourists like us and the locals. The manager of a ladies’ wear store in New World Centre in the flourishing Tsim Sha Tsui luxury shopping and recreational area lamented: “With the economic downturn and the Central Government in the mainland curbing the flow of visitors into Hong Kong, we have been badly hit. You see, the mall is so quiet.” Another store manager in nearby Miramar Shopping Centre added: “Even with our 50 per-cent sale items, and prices of some dresses reduced by 70 per cent, not many people are stepping into our store. And we are not even talking about purchases.” Stores in the gigantic Harbour City, however, appeared to be doing better. They continued to pull in the crowds, and business there seemed to be more brisk. Perhaps this was because of Harbour City’s location, which is adjacent to the Ocean Terminal for cruise ships. In end-March, all the three Cunard ocean liners – the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria – were docked there, and thousands of us from the three ships visited the malls before starting out on our voyage. Tourism has long been one of Hong Kong’s top money earners. But according to an official Hong Kong economy research agency, growth in the city’s inbound tourism started to ease in 2014. The slowdown continued and was more pronounced in the first half of last year as a result of fewer mainland visitor arrivals during the period. Hong Kong’s flagging tourism industry has urged the government to do more to attract visitors to this once favourite playground of the region. There are suggestions that Hong Kong should develop more tourist attractions, introduce effective measures to attract more business visitors and generate further growth of the cruise industry. C LU B N E W S June 2016 | 5 | g o lf N E W S The ladies from Keppel Club and KRPM are all ready for a good game of golf! Ladies Interclub friendly : Kelab Rahman Putra visits Keppel Neighbourly ties enhanced on the fairway In the spirit of promoting friendly ties as well as exchange of knowledge and skills, a ladies’ interclub golf friendly was organised between Keppel Club and Malaysia’s Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia (KRPM) on April 29, 2016 with Keppel Club as the host. Although there was heavy rain before the guests from KRPM arrived at the Club in the afternoon, the skies soon cleared and ladies from both clubs proceeded for a game of golf. After mingling and bonding over a good game of golf, the ladies, together with representatives of management committees of both clubs, enjoyed a hearty dinner at the Berlayer Terrace. Captain C.S. Kong thanked the visitors from KRPM for making the trip to the Club and presented gifts of appreciation to KRPM’s management committee members. There was also a lucky draw session held during dinner and Lady Captain Meenah Fong presented the prizes to the lucky winners. Overall, the Ladies’ Interclub Friendly event between the two clubs was a success and the ladies certainly look forward to more friendly exchanges in future. During the prize presentation ceremony, Captain C.S. Kong thanked all the participants for their support and Vice-Captain Jamil Maksoem was invited to give out the medals for the monthly winners from January to April this year. Prior to the start of the game, Captain Kong put up a $3,000 Hole in One (HIO) prize in the hopes of one lucky golfer winning it. 55 golfers betted on the HIO but unfortunately, no one could successfully accomplish the task. However, the good news is that the bets and the HIO prize (worth a total of $4,100) will be donated to the Keppel Charity event to be held in October this year. Captain Kong also gave away various prizes during the lucky draw, including a limited edition Mercedes Benz watch. He also presented prizes to the players who successfully qualified and who will represent Keppel Club at the national round of the Mercedes Trophy to be held in June. Ladies Committee Cup and ASM 2016 Sweet moments of sisterly bonds and love By Dean Koh As incumbent Lady Captain Meenah Fong passed the baton to incoming Lady Captain Olivia Chung at this year’s Annual Social Meeting (ASM) on the evening of May 22 at Keppel Hall, both of them exchanged hugs. Ms Fong also embraced the current members of the Ladies Committee, in the spirit of sisterhood within the Keppelite ladies golf group. Such is the warmth and bonds between the ladies of the Ladies Committee and by extension, the lady golfers of Keppel Club. Earlier in the day, the Ladies Committee Cup saw 51 lady golfers in action and trying their best to win the overall title on the course. However, we observed a more friendly banter than competitive action between the ladies, who all took turns to rally one another on despite the scorching heat. The ladies seated in the audience cheered for Ms Fong as she gave her thanksgiving speech to the Ladies Committee, the lady golfers present as well as Keppel Club staff for supporting her and her team’s work. She also called for the lady golfers to support the Club’s monthly activities which was held for them. New Lady Captain Olivia Chung also gave a short speech, citing that it was difficult to fill the shoes of Ms Fong as she had done such a good job as the previous Lady Captain but she said would do her best as the new Lady Captain. Ms Chung also announced that Dr Wenli Howe would be appointed as the new Lady Vice-Captain. The hugs are testament to the ladies’ close bonds and ties with one another. Golf advisory: Buggy with red flag At Keppel Club, we strive to bring a pleasant experience for all members and their guests. With our many reciprocal arrangements with other golf clubs in place, it is common for our members to invite guests for a game of golf. Recently, the golf department implemented a red flag system on buggies with guest golf players. The red flag is to remind fellow golfers and members to give due consideration for guests who may not be very familiar with the course. Therefore, a little patience goes a long way, especially in the spirit of sportsmanship. Next time you see a buggy with a red flag on the course, do remember to say hi or even extend a helping hand if necessary to our visiting guests. We seek your kind cooperation in making Keppel Club a safe and pleasant place for all members and guests. June 2016 | 9 | C LU B N E W S Keppelites enjoy Tombola night Held on the first Friday of every month, the May edition of Tombola Night (May 6) saw over 30 Tombola enthusiasts battling it out for the grand jackpot prize of $6,000. As usual, Mr Clarence Nonis hosted the game and announced the winning numbers. Unfortunately, no one came close to winning the grand jackpot prize but one lucky winner went home with the top house prize of $300. Tombola, which is a game that originated in Southern Italy in the 18th century, has been a tradition at Keppel Club for more than forty years. Players have to pay for ticket, which they then draw at random from a hat or tombola drum. Similar to the game of bingo, it is often played at Christmas time, and the winner’s prizes often take on a symbolic form. We look forward to welcoming more members and their guests at our monthly Tombola night event. Do come by on June 3 for a fun night! The grandpa of Keppel Tombola Mr C. June 2016 | 13 | C LU B N E W S YOGALATES WITH DEEPTI The Fabulous New You Yogalates: The best of both worlds Conceptually, the practice of yoga and pilates are quite different and most practitioners just stick to one form of workout, depending on their personal preferences. However, there are those who enjoy doing both yoga and pilates but usually choose one due to time constraints. Fortunately, those who want to reap the benefits of both workouts can have their cake and eat it – in the form of yogalates or yogilates. Ms Deepti is a 500 Hr YTT Certified and Yoga Alliance registered teacher and pilates instructor from Singapore who has been teaching Flow Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Hatha, Yin, Pilates, Kids Yoga to various private and corporate clients for the last two years. Yogalates is the combination of yoga and pilates exercises which involve routines that incorporate the concepts of yoga. There is also a key emphasis on meditational exercises to align the mind and body, while focusing on core strengthening and muscle toning, a direct result of doing pilates. Starting off with some warm-up exercises, the participants first tried out the yoga poses, which then transitioned to pilates movements. Ms Deepti’s clear and simple instructions during the trial class made it easy for everyone to follow the flow of the two-exercise combination. Yogalates is a great workout that can help practitioners build muscle and stamina while teaching them to relax and focus. The blend of strength and flexibility training improves posture, reduces stress and creates long, lean muscles without bulking up as it uses two fitness method and is good for people who do not have time to take separate classes. Registration is now open and class will start with eight participants. Even the men are enjoying the yogalates trial class. On April 22, 18 participants signed up for the yogalates free trial class. Decked in exercise gear, and with a yoga mat, participants were relaxed and eager while listening to the explanation given by the instructor Ms Deepti before the class began. | 14 | Keppel Links CLASS DETAILS Class Name:Yogalates Instructor: Ms Deepti Day: Every Friday Time: 10.00am-11.00am Where: Keppel Club Aerobics Studio Charges per month of 4 session: $50 (Member) $60 (Guest) – Excludes GST C LU B N E W S June 2016 | 15 | C LU B N E W S Mr Foo Tian Peng, Tennis Sub-Committee member and Men’s “C” & “D” Division Captain, tells us about his experience with tennis and the club Dedication and perseverance for the love of tennis competitions I have been to, with 22 teams participating. There were four round robin groups of six teams and the group winners moved on to the semi-finals. We managed to beat all five teams during the elimination rounds to reach the semi-finals. During the semi-finals, we beat Singapore Island Country Club 2-1 and we beat Tanglin Club in the finals 2-1 as well. Although we did win every single match, we managed to win the overall for each of the elimination rounds and stayed unbeaten. Mr Foo Tian Peng has been playing tennis for the past eight years. Text and photos by Dean Koh Although he started playing tennis relatively late in 2008, Mr Foo Tian Peng put in a lot of effort and training when he first picked up the sport – putting in up to four sessions of two hours a week for training and practice. Today, he serves as the Captain of the Men’s “C” & “D” teams for the Club and always goes the extra mile to make sure the players under his care get the facilities and training they need for upcoming competitions. We learn more about his role as captain and he even shares tips for new and aspiring tennis players. How long have you been a member of Keppel Club? Mr Foo: I have been a member of the Club since 2002 and I started serving in the Gym Sub-Committee from 2011-2013 (three terms). I ‘moved’ to the Tennis SubCommittee from 2013 to the present | 16 | Keppel Links day as it was a natural fit since I was playing tennis quite often. What do you enjoy about being a member of the Club? Mr Foo: I like the fact that it is a family-oriented club and everyone is friendly and sociable. There are also lots of activities in the Club, so there is something for everyone. Keppel Club’s Men’s “C” Division team were recently crowned the champions at the Interclub Singles League 2016 organised by the Singapore Tennis Association. Mr Foo: I took up the role in 2013 and started with the “D” team. My main task as Captain would be to select the right players to go for the right competitions and to provide the necessary training for them. It is also important to motivate my players to give their all during competitions. What tips would you give to new tennis players looking to improve in their play and performance? Mr Foo: First, find a good tennis coach as early as you can and develop the right habits as a tennis player. Secondly, practice your serve as it is very important and it is often neglected by many players. Thirdly, play as many competitive matches as possible and develop good strokes. C LU B N E W S Keppelites’ tennis players pose for a group photo with their NUSS counterparts. Tennis Friendly: Keppel Club vs NUSS More than just a game By Ashok Kumar, Assistant Manager, Sports May 14th was a fun-filled Saturday for the tennis fraternity as Keppel Club hosted a tennis friendly with NUSS. The heavy downpour in the afternoon did not stop both of the club’s tennis enthusiasts from playing, as they both enjoyed several rounds of evenly-matched contests. The games still went on as scheduled, thanks to the club’s conducive indoor courts, which provided players with a great platform to showcase their skills. When the rain stopped, both Keppelites and NUSS players forgot about existing rivalries and helped help each other to mop the outdoor courts to enjoy more tennis action. It was a show of sportsmanship from both teams, which makes tennis such a great game, after all. Indeed, there was an excellent show of camaraderie between both clubs, and the action translated well into the courts. Keppelites Win In the end, Keppel Club emerged as winners of the friendly with an overall score of 10-8.
